Raag Kalyan, Fourth Guru:
ੴ ਸਤਿਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik-oNkaar satnaam kartaa purakh nirbha-o nirvair akaal moorat ajoonee saibhaN gur parsaad.
There is only one God whose Name is ‘of Eternal Existence’. He is the creator of the universe, all-pervading, without fear, without enmity, independent of time, beyond the cycle of birth and death, self revealed and is realized by the Guru’s grace.
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ‘ਹੋਂਦ ਵਾਲਾ’ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦਾ ਰਚਨਹਾਰ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਸਭ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ, ਭੈ ਤੋਂ ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ, ਵੈਰ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੂਪ ਕਾਲ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ, (ਭਾਵ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਨਾਸ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ), ਜੋ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਤੋਂ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਰਾਮਾ ਰਮ ਰਾਮੈ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
raamaa ram raamai ant na paa-i-aa.
O’ all-pervading God, nobody can find the extent of Your virtues.
ਹੇ ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ, ਤੇਰੇ (ਗੁਣਾਂ) ਦਾ ਅੰਤ (ਕਿਸੇ ਜੀਵ ਪਾਸੋ) ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਹਮ ਬਾਰਿਕ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਰੇ ਤੁਮਰੇ ਤੂ ਬਡ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਪਿਤਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ham baarik partipaaray tumray too bad purakh pitaa mayraa maa-i-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
O’ God, we are Your children, we are nurtured by You, You are the most sublime being, You are our father as well as mother. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਅਸੀਂ ਜੀਵ ਤੇਰੇ ਬੱਚੇ ਹਾਂ, ਤੇਰੇ ਪਾਲੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਾਂ, ਤੂੰ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਪੁਰਖ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਸਾਡਾ ਪਿਤਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਸਾਡੀ ਮਾਂ ਹੈਂ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਅਸੰਖ ਅਗਮ ਹਹਿ ਅਗਮ ਅਗਮ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇਆ ॥
har kay naam asaNkh agam heh agam agam har raa-i-aa.
God’s Names are countless and beyond the reach of our senses; God the sovereign king is incomprehensible.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਅਣਗਿਣਤ ਹਨ ,ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਤਕ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਤੋਂ ਪਰ੍ਹੇ ਅਤੇ ਅਥਾਹ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਣੀ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਬਹੁ ਕੀਨੀ ਇਕੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਨਹੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
gunee gi-aanee surat baho keenee ik til nahee keemat paa-i-aa. ||1||
The virtuous and the spiritual teachers have given it a great thought, but they have not been able to appraise even an iota of His worth. ||1||
ਨੇਕ ਅਤੇ ਗਿਆਨਵਾਨ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂੂ ਬਾਰੇ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਹੀ ਵੀਚਾਰ ਕੀਤੀ, ਪਰ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਸਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦਾ ਰਤਾ ਭਰ ਭੀ ਮੁੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਿਆ ॥੧॥
ਗੋਬਿਦ ਗੁਣ ਗੋਬਿਦ ਸਦ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਗੁਣ ਗੋਬਿਦ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
gobid gun gobid sad gaavahi gun gobid ant na paa-i-aa.
Many human beings always sing praises of God, the master of the universe, but no one has found the extent of His virtues.
(ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਸਦਾ ਗਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਅੰਤ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭਾ।
ਤੂ ਅਮਿਤਿ ਅਤੋਲੁ ਅਪਰੰਪਰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਬਹੁ ਜਪੀਐ ਥਾਹ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
too amit atol aprampar su-aamee baho japee-ai thaah na paa-i-aa. ||2||
O’ the Master-God! Your worth cannot be measured, You are beyond limits; even though Your Name is being recited a lot, but You are such an ocean of virtues whose depth can not be found. ||2||
ਹੇ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰੀ ਹਸਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਣਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ, ਤੇਰੀ ਹਸਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਤੋਲਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ। ਤੂੰ ਪਰੇ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈਂ। ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਬਹੁਤ ਜਪਿਆ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, (ਪਰ ਤੂੰ ਇਕ ਐਸਾ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਹੈਂ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਦੀ) ਡੂੰਘਾਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ॥੨॥
ਉਸਤਤਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਤੁਮਰੀ ਜਨ ਮਾਧੌ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇਆ ॥
ustat karahi tumree jan maaDhou gun gaavahi har raa-i-aa.
O’ God, the master of the goddess of wealth and the sovereign king! Your devotees praise You by singing Your virtues.
ਹੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਤੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹ! ਤੇਰੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਤੁਮ੍ ਜਲ ਨਿਧਿ ਹਮ ਮੀਨੇ ਤੁਮਰੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਕਤਹੂ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
tumH jal niDh ham meenay tumray tayraa ant na kathoo paa-i-aa. ||3||
You are like the ocean and we are like Your fishes, just as the fish does not know the extent of the ocean, similarly no one has been able to find Your limits. ||3||
ਤੂੰ (ਮਾਨੋ, ਇਕ) ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਹੈਂ, ਅਸੀਂ ਜੀਵ ਤੇਰੀਆਂ ਮੱਛੀਆਂ ਹਾਂ (ਜਿਵੇ ਮੱਛੀ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਦਾ ਅੰਦਾਜ਼ਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਤਿਵੇ) ਕੋਈ ਜੀਵ ਤੇਰੀ ਹਸਤੀ ਦਾ ਅੰਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਿਆ ॥੩॥
ਜਨ ਕਉ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਮਧਸੂਦਨ ਹਰਿ ਦੇਵਹੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਾਇਆ ॥
jan ka-o kirpaa karahu maDhsoodan har dayvhu naam japaa-i-aa.
O’ God, the slayer of demons, bestow mercy on Your devotee; O’ God, bless me with Your Name, so that I may keep remembering it with adoration.
ਹੇ ਦੈਂਤ-ਦਮਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਆਪਣੇ) ਸੇਵਕ (ਨਾਨਕ) ਉੱਤੇ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ। ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! (ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ) ਨਾਮ ਦੇਹ (ਮੈਂ ਨਿਤ) ਜਪਦਾ ਰਹਾਂ।
ਮੈ ਮੂਰਖ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਟੇਕ ਹੈ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੧॥
mai moorakh anDhulay naam tayk hai jan naanak gurmukh paa-i-aa. ||4||1||
For a blind fool like me, Your Name is the only support: O’ devotee Nanak, only the Guru’s follower receives it. ||4||1||
ਮੈਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! ਕੇਵਲ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ) ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੧॥

ਹਰਿ ਜਨੁ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵਤ ਹਸਿਆ ॥
har jan gun gaavat hasi-aa.
God’s devotee remains delighted while singing His praises,
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਭਗਤ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਿਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ-ਚਿੱਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ,
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਬਨੀ ਮਤਿ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਧੁਰਿ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
har har bhagat banee mat gurmat Dhur mastak parabh likhi-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
the devotional worship of God, through the Guru’s teachings, seems pleasing to him because God has predestined him with it. ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਉਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰੀ ਲੱਗਦੀ ਹੈ। ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ (ਹੀ) ਧੁਰ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਤੋਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਇਹ ਲੇਖ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਪਗ ਸਿਮਰਉ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਮਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਬਸਿਆ ॥
gur kay pag simra-o din raatee man har har har basi-aa.
I always remember and follow the Guru’s teachings because of which God has manifested in my mind.
ਮੈਂ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਵੱਸਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਜਗਿ ਸਾਰੀ ਘਸਿ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਜਸੁ ਘਸਿਆ ॥੧॥
har har har keerat jag saaree ghas chandan jas ghasi-aa. ||1||
Singing God’s praises is the most sublime deed to do in the world; just as the sandalwood emits fragrance when rubbed, similarly the recitation of praises of God spreads the fragrance of Naam. ||1||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ (ਸਭ ਤੋਂ) ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ (ਪਦਾਰਥ) ਹੈ, (ਜਿਵੇਂ) ਚੰਦਨ ਰਗੜ ਖਾ ਕੇ (ਸੁਗੰਧੀ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਜਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਰਗੜ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਸੁਗੰਧੀ ਖਿਲਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ) ॥੧॥
ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ਸਭਿ ਸਾਕਤ ਖੋਜਿ ਪਇਆ ॥
har jan har har har liv laa-ee sabh saakat khoj pa-i-aa.
God’s devotees always remain focused on God, but the faithless cynics are jealous of them.
ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਭਗਤ ਸਦਾ ਹਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਹਰੀ ਤੋਂ ਟੁੱਟੇ ਹੋਏ ਸਾਰੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਈਰਖਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਜਿਉ ਕਿਰਤ ਸੰਜੋਗਿ ਚਲਿਓ ਨਰ ਨਿੰਦਕੁ ਪਗੁ ਨਾਗਨਿ ਛੁਹਿ ਜਲਿਆ ॥੨॥
ji-o kirat sanjog chali-o nar nindak pag naagan chhuhi jali-aa. ||2||
As the slanderer acts throughout his life in accordance with his past deeds, he keeps burning in the poison of jealousy just like the person who burns in anguish when his foot accidentally touches a serpent. ||2||
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਪਿਛਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਅਸਰ ਹੇਠ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਨਿੰਦਾ ਵਾਲੀ) ਜੀਵਨ ਤੋਰ ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤਿਉਂ ਤਿਉਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਈਰਖਾ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਨਾਲ) ਛੁਹ ਕੇ ਸੜਦਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ) ਪੈਰ ਸਪਣੀ ਨਾਲ ਛੁਹ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਸੜ ਬਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ॥੨॥
ਜਨ ਕੇ ਤੁਮ੍ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਤੁਮ੍ ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਜਨ ਰਖਿਆ ॥
jan kay tumH har raakhay su-aamee tumH jug jug jan rakhi-aa.
O’ the Master-God! You are the savior of Your devotees, You have been protecting Your devotees in all ages.
ਹੇ (ਮੇਰੇ) ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਆਪਣੇ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਆਪ ਰਾਖੇ ਹੋ, ਹਰੇਕ ਜੁਗ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਸੀਂ (ਆਪਣੇ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਦੀ) ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰਦੇ ਆਏ ਹੋ।
ਕਹਾ ਭਇਆ ਦੈਤਿ ਕਰੀ ਬਖੀਲੀ ਸਭ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਝਰਿ ਪਰਿਆ ॥੩॥
kahaa bha-i-aa dait karee bakheelee sabh kar kar jhar pari-aa. ||3||
How does it matter, if the people with demon-like nature talk ill of saints? These people spiritually deteriorate by such deeds. ||3||
ਕੀ ਹੋਇਆ?, ਜੇਕਰ ਰਾਖਸ਼ ਸਾਧੂ ਦੀ ਬਦਖੋਈ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਥਨੀ ਅਤੇ ਕਰਨੀ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸਾਰੇ ਤਬਾਹ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਣੇ ਹਨ ॥੩॥
ਜੇਤੇ ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਕੀਏ ਸਭਿ ਕਾਲੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਗ੍ਰਸਿਆ ॥
jaytay jee-a jant parabh kee-ay sabh kaalai mukh garsi-aa.
All the beings and creatures created by God, are in the grip of the fear of death.
ਜਿਤਨੇ ਭੀ ਜੀਅ-ਜੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ, ਸਭ ਨੂੰ ਮੋਤ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਫੜਿਆ ਹੈ
ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਨਿ ਪਇਆ ॥੪॥੨॥
har jan har har har parabh raakhay jan naanak saran pa-i-aa. ||4||2||
O’ devotee Nanak, God has always protected His devotees; therefore devotees always seek His refuge. ||4||2||
ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! ਆਪਣੇ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਆਪ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ, ਭਗਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੪॥੨॥
