ਤਟਨ ਖਟਨ ਜਟਨ ਹੋਮਨ ਨਾਹੀ ਡੰਡਧਾਰ ਸੁਆਉ ॥੧॥
tatan khatan jatan homan naahee dandDhaar su-aa-o. ||1||
Bathing at sacred rivers, performing six holy deeds, keeping matted hair, doing fire worships and becoming staff wielding yogis serve no purpose. ||1||
ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ, ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਛੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਰੋਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਅੱਭਿਆਸ, ਜਟਾਂ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰਨੀਆਂ, ਹੋਮ-ਜੱਗ ਕਰਨੇ, ਡੰਡਾ ਧਾਰੀ ਜੋਗੀ ਬਣਨਾ- ਇਹ ਸਭ ਕਿਸੇ ਅਰਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ। ॥੧॥
ਜਤਨ ਭਾਂਤਨ ਤਪਨ ਭ੍ਰਮਨ ਅਨਿਕ ਕਥਨ ਕਥਤੇ ਨਹੀ ਥਾਹ ਪਾਈ ਠਾਉ ॥
jatan bhaaNtan tapan bharman anik kathan kathtay nahee thaah paa-ee thaa-o.
The limits of God’s virtues and place for inner peace is not found by many such efforts as penance, going around holy places, or delivering innumerable sermons.
ਤਪ ਕਰਨੇ, ਧਰਤੀ ਦਾ ਭ੍ਰਮਣ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹਿਣਾ-ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਜਤਨ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ, ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਵਖਿਆਨ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ) ਹਾਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭਦੀ, (ਸੁਖ-ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਦਾ) ਥਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ।
ਸੋਧਿ ਸਗਰ ਸੋਧਨਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਭਜੁ ਨਾਉ ॥੨॥੨॥੩੯॥
soDh sagar soDhnaa sukh naankaa bhaj naa-o. ||2||2||39||
O Nanak, after reflecting on all thoughts, I have concluded that one should remember God’s Name for attaining inner peace. ||2||2||39||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਵਿਚਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੇ (ਇਹੀ ਗੱਲ ਲੱਭੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਕਰੋ (ਇਸੇ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ) ਆਨੰਦ ਹੈ ॥੨॥੨॥੩੯॥

One eternal God, realized by the grace of the True Guru:
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪਤਿਤ ਪਾਵਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਬਛਲੁ ਭੈ ਹਰਨ ਤਾਰਨ ਤਰਨ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
patit paavan bhagat bachhal bhai haran taaran taran. ||1|| rahaa-o.
O’ God, You are the purifier of sinners, lover of devotional worship, dispeller of fears and a ship to ferry mortals across the world-ocean of vices. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਵਿਕਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਭਗਤੀ-ਭਾਵ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਡਰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾਣ ਲਈ ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਹੈਂ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਨੈਨ ਤਿਪਤੇ ਦਰਸੁ ਪੇਖਿ ਜਸੁ ਤੋਖਿ ਸੁਨਤ ਕਰਨ ॥੧॥
nain tiptay daras paykh jas tokh sunat karan. ||1||
O’ God, my eyes feel satiated upon visualizing You and my ears feel appeased by listening to Your praises. ||1||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਮੇਰੀਆਂ) ਅੱਖਾਂ ਰੱਜ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, (ਮੇਰੇ) ਕੰਨ ਤੇਰਾ ਜਸ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਠੰਢ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥
ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਨਾਥ ਅਨਾਥ ਦਾਤੇ ਦੀਨ ਗੋਬਿਦ ਸਰਨ ॥
paraan naath anaath daatay deen gobid saran.
O’ God, the master of life, supporter of the helpless, benefactor of the meek, and master of the universe, I have come to Your refuge.
ਹੇ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ) ਪ੍ਰਾਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਥ! ਹੇ ਅਨਾਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਾਤੇ! ਹੇ ਦੀਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਾਤੇ! ਹੇ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ! ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਇਆ ਹਾਂ
ਆਸ ਪੂਰਨ ਦੁਖ ਬਿਨਾਸਨ ਗਹੀ ਓਟ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਨ ॥੨॥੧॥੪੦॥
aas pooran dukh binaasan gahee ot naanak har charan. ||2||1||40||
O’ God, the fulfiller of hopes and destroyer of suffering of all the beings, Nanakhas taken the support of Your Name. ||2||1||40||
ਹੇ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਆਸਾਂ ਪੂਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ! ਹੇ ਸਭ ਦੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ! ਮੈਂ ਨਾਨਕ ਨੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਓਟ ਲਈ ਹੈ ॥੨॥੧॥੪੦॥

ਚਰਨ ਸਰਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਆਨ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਾਇ ॥
charan saran da-i-aal thaakur aan naahee jaa-ay.
O’ the merciful Master-God, I have sought Your refuge since there is no other place than Yours to save oneself from the worldly vices.
ਹੇ ਦਇਆ-ਦੇ-ਘਰ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ) ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ (ਆਇਆ ਹਾਂ। ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਣ ਲਈ ਤੈਥੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਥਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਪਤਿਤ ਪਾਵਨ ਬਿਰਦੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਉਧਰਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
patit paavan birad su-aamee uDhratay har Dhi-aa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
O’ Master-God, to purify the sinners is Your tradition and myriads of people swim across the world-ocean of vices by remembering You with love. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ! ਵਿਕਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਕਰਨਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਮੁੱਢ-ਕਦੀਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਹੈ। ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰ ਕੇ (ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜੀਵ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸੈਸਾਰ ਗਾਰ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਸਾਗਰ ਪਤਿਤ ਮੋਹ ਮਾਨ ਅੰਧ ॥
saisaar gaar bikaar saagar patit moh maan anDh.
This world is like a swamp of vices, the mortals blinded by the emotional attachment and egotistical pride remain caught up in it,
ਜਗਤ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਜਿੱਲ੍ਹਣ ਹੈ, ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਹੈ, ਮੋਹ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਣ ਨਾਲ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ ਜੀਵ (ਇਸ ਵਿਚ) ਡਿੱਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ|
ਬਿਕਲ ਮਾਇਆ ਸੰਗਿ ਧੰਧ ॥
bikal maa-i-aa sang DhanDh.
and they remain bewildered by the love for Maya and worldly entanglements.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਝੰਬੇਲਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਵਿਆਕੁਲ ਹੋਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਕਰੁ ਗਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਆਪਿ ਕਾਢਹੁ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਰਾਇ ॥੧॥
kar gahay parabh aap kaadhahu raakh layho gobind raa-ay. ||1||
O’ God, the sovereign king, please pull them out of this swamp and save them by holding their hand. ||1||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹ! (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ) ਹੱਥ ਫੜ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਜਿੱਲ੍ਹਣ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਕੱਢ, ਤੂੰ ਆਪ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ) ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰ ॥੧॥
ਅਨਾਥ ਨਾਥ ਸਨਾਥ ਸੰਤਨ ਕੋਟਿ ਪਾਪ ਬਿਨਾਸ ॥
anaath naath sanaath santan kot paap binaas.
O’ God, the support of the supportless, anchor of the saints and destroyer of millions of sins of people,
ਹੇ ਅਨਾਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਥ! ਹੇ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਹਾਰੇ! ਹੇ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ) ਕ੍ਰੋੜਾਂ ਪਾਪ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ!
ਮਨਿ ਦਰਸਨੈ ਕੀ ਪਿਆਸ ॥
man darsanai kee pi-aas.
in my mind is the yearning for Your blessed Vision.
(ਮੇਰੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਤੇਰੇ) ਦਰਸਨ ਦੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਹੈ
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪੂਰਨ ਗੁਨਤਾਸ ॥
parabh pooran guntaas.
O’ the perfect God, the treasure of virtues!
ਹੇ ਪੂਰਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਹੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ!
ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਦਇਆਲ ਗੁਪਾਲ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਨਾ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇ ॥੨॥੨॥੪੧॥
kirpaal da-i-aal gupaal naanak har rasnaa gun gaa-ay. ||2||2||41||
O’ kind and merciful God, O’ the cherisher of the universe, please bless Nanak that his tongue may keep singing Your praises. ||2||2||41||

vaar vaara-o anik daara-o. sukh pari-a suhaag palak raat. ||1|| rahaa-o.
O’ my friend, I am dedicated to Him, and I am ready to cast away innumerable comforts of life for the sake of spending just one moment of union with my beloved God. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਸਖੀ! ਮੈਂ (ਹੋਰ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ (ਸੁਖ) ਵਾਰਦੀ ਹਾਂ, ਸਦਕੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਦੇ ਸੁਹਾਗ ਦੀ ਰਾਤ ਦੇ ਸੁਖ ਤੋਂ (ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਵਾਰਨ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਤਿਆਰ ਹਾਂ) ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ
ਕਨਿਕ ਮੰਦਰ ਪਾਟ ਸੇਜ ਸਖੀ ਮੋਹਿ ਨਾਹਿ ਇਨ ਸਿਉ ਤਾਤ ॥੧॥
kanik mandar paat sayj sakhee mohi naahi in si-o taat. ||1||
O’ my dear friend, I don’t have any craving for things like golden mansions or silken beds. ||1||
ਹੇ ਸਹੇਲੀਏ! ਸੋਨੇ ਦੇ ਮਹਲ ਅਤੇ ਰੇਸ਼ਮੀ ਕਪੜਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਸੇਜ-ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਲਗਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਮੁਕਤ ਲਾਲ ਅਨਿਕ ਭੋਗ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਾਤ ॥
mukat laal anik bhog bin naam naanak haat.
O’ Nanak, without Naam all such things as pearls, rubies, and other innumerable enjoyments lead to spiritual deterioration.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਮੋਤੀ, ਹੀਰੇ (ਮਾਇਕ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਭੋਗ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਆਤਮਕ) ਮੌਤ (ਦਾ ਕਾਰਨ) ਹਨ।
ਰੂਖੋ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਭੂਮਿ ਸੈਨ ਸਖੀ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਸੰਗਿ ਸੂਖਿ ਬਿਹਾਤ ॥੨॥੩॥੪੨॥
rookho bhojan bhoom sain sakhee pari-a sang sookh bihaat. ||2||3||42||
O’ my friend, it is better to eat dry bread and sleep on the bare floor, because lifepasses in peace in the company of dear God. ||2||3||42||
ਹੇ ਸਹੇਲੀਏ! ਰੁੱਖੀ ਰੋਟੀ (ਖਾਣੀ, ਅਤੇ) ਭੁੰਞੇ ਸੌਣਾ (ਚੰਗਾ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਪਿਆਰੇ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਸੁਖ ਵਿਚ ਬੀਤਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੨॥੩॥੪੨॥

ਅਹੰ ਤੋਰੋ ਮੁਖੁ ਜੋਰੋ ॥

O’ friend, give up your ego, and sit together with holy persons.
ਹੇ ਸਖੀ! (ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਮਿਲ ਬੈਠਿਆ ਕਰ (ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ l
ਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਤ ਮਨੁ ਲੋਰੋ ॥
gur gur karat man loro.
Always keep Guru’s teachings within and search your mind,
ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਵਸਾਂਦਿਆਂ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਖੋਜਿਆ ਕਰ,
ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਪਿਆਰੋ ਮੋਰੋ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
pari-a pareet pi-aaro moro. ||1|| rahaa-o.
and by doing so turn your mind towards dear God’s love. ||1||Pause||
(ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ) ਪਿਆਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਵਲ ਪਰਤਾਇਆ ਕਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਸੇਜ ਸੁਹਾਵੀ ਆਗਨਿ ਚੈਨਾ ਤੋਰੋ ਰੀ ਤੋਰੋ ਪੰਚ ਦੂਤਨ ਸਿਉ ਸੰਗੁ ਤੋਰੋ ॥੧॥
garihi sayj suhaavee aagan chainaa toro ree toro panch dootan si-o sang toro. ||1||
O’ my friend, break your bonds with the five demons (vices) so that your heart becomes a place for union with God, and your mind will be at peace.||1||
ਹੇ ਸਹੇਲੀ! (ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ) ਪੰਜ ਵੈਰੀਆਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ (ਆਪਣਾ) ਸਾਥ ਤੋੜ, (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੇਰੇ) ਹਿਰਦੇ-ਘਰ ਵਿਚ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦੀ) ਸੋਹਣੀ ਸੇਜ ਬਣ ਜਾਇਗੀ, ਤੇਰੇ (ਹਿਰਦੇ ਦੇ) ਵਿਹੜੇ ਵਿਚ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਆ ਟਿਕੇਗੀ ॥੧॥
ਆਇ ਨ ਜਾਇ ਬਸੇ ਨਿਜ ਆਸਨਿ ਊਂਧ ਕਮਲ ਬਿਗਸੋਰੋ ॥
aa-ay na jaa-ay basay nij aasan ooNDh kamal bigsoro.
That person’s mind does not go astray, remains steady within himself and his inverted lotus like heart (away from God) turns toward God and blossoms,
ਉਹ ਜੀਵ ਸਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਸਣ ਉਤੇ ਬੈਠਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਅਡੋਲ-ਚਿੱਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ), ਉਸ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਲੋਂ) ਉਲਟਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹਿਰਦਾ-ਕੌਲ-ਫੁੱਲ ਖਿੜ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਛੁਟਕੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਸੋਰੋ ॥
chhutkee ha-umai soro.
the turmoil of his egotism is silenced,
(ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਹਉਮੈ ਦਾ ਰੌਲਾ ਮੁੱਕ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ,
ਗਾਇਓ ਰੀ ਗਾਇਓ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਨੀ ਗਹੇਰੋ ॥੨॥੪॥੪੩॥
gaa-i-o ree gaa-i-o parabh naanak gunee gahayro. ||2||4||43||
because O’ Nanak, he has been singing the praises of God, the Ocean of virtues. ||2||4||43||
ਕਿਓਂਕਿ ਉਸ ਜੀਵ ਨੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਣੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੇ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ॥੨॥੪॥੪੩॥

O’ my mind, always remember and recite God’s Name with adoration,
ਹੇ (ਮੇਰੇ) ਮਨ! ਤਾਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆ ਕਰ, ਸਦਾ ਜਪਿਆ ਕਰ,
ਜੋ ਸੰਤ ਬੇਦ ਕਹਤ ਪੰਥੁ ਗਾਖਰੋ ਮੋਹ ਮਗਨ ਅਹੰ ਤਾਪ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jo sant bayd kahat panth gaakhro moh magan ahaN taap. rahaa-o.
because saints and Vedas say that the way to realize God is very difficult, sinceone is usually involved in emotional attachment and ailment of ego. ||Pause||
ਸਾਧੂ ਅਤੇ ਵੇਦ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦਾ ਰਸਤਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਔਖਾ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂਕੇ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਮੇਹ ਦੀ ਮਗਨਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਦਾ ਤਾਪ ਚੜ੍ਹਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ॥
ਜੋ ਰਾਤੇ ਮਾਤੇ ਸੰਗਿ ਬਪੁਰੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਸੰਤਾਪ ॥੧॥
jo raatay maatay sang bapuree maa-i-aa moh santaap. ||1||
Those who are imbued and intoxicated with the love for wretched Maya, sufferthe pains of emotional attachment. ||1||
ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਭੈੜੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਨਾਲ ਰੱਤੇ ਮੱਤੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ) ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ (ਅਨੇਕਾਂ) ਦੁੱਖ-ਕਲੇਸ਼ ਵਿਆਪਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥
ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਸੋਊ ਜਨੁ ਉਧਰੈ ਜਿਸਹਿ ਉਧਾਰਹੁ ਆਪ ॥
naam japat so-oo jan uDhrai jisahi uDhaarahu aap.
O’ God, only that person whom You Yourself emancipate, crosses the worldlyocean of vices by remembering Your Name with adoration.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਿਸ (ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਤੇਰਾ) ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਿਆਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਇ ਮੋਹ ਭੈ ਭਰਮਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪ ॥੨॥੫॥੪੪॥
binas jaa-ay moh bhai bharmaa naanak sant partaap. ||2||5||44||
O’ Nanak, one’s emotional attachment, fear and doubt are dispelled by the Guru’s grace. ||2||5||44||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਪਰਤਾਪ ਨਾਲ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਾਰੇ ਡਰ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਭਟਕਣਾ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੨॥੫॥੪੪॥
