ਪੁਛਾ ਦੇਵਾਂ ਮਾਣਸਾਂ ਜੋਧ ਕਰਹਿ ਅਵਤਾਰ ॥
puchhaa dayvaaN maansaaN joDh karahi avtaar.
if I ask the gods, the mortals and those created as warriors by God,
ਜੇਕਰ ਮੈਂ ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਇਨਸਾਨਾਂ, ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਰਚੇ ਹੋਏ ਯੋਧਿਆਂ ਤੇ ਸੁਆਲ ਕਰਾਂ,
ਸਿਧ ਸਮਾਧੀ ਸਭਿ ਸੁਣੀ ਜਾਇ ਦੇਖਾਂ ਦਰਬਾਰੁ ॥
siDh samaaDhee sabh sunee jaa-ay daykhaaN darbaar.
if I listen to the adepts who practice meditation and ask them how can I attain God’s presence;
ਜੇ ਸਮਾਧੀ ਲਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪੁੱਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਜੋਗੀਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਮੱਤਾਂ ਜਾ ਸੁਣਾਂ ਕਿ ਸਾਈਂ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਵੇਖਾਂ;
ਅਗੈ ਸਚਾ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਇ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਭੈ ਵਿਣੁ ਸਾਰੁ ॥
agai sachaa sach naa-ay nirbha-o bhai vin saar.
The best advice I get is that God who is eternal, fearless and supreme and whose name is eternal too, can be realized only by lovingly remembering Him.
(ਇਹਨਾਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਉੱਦਮਾਂ ਦੇ) ਸਾਹਮਣੇ (ਇੱਕੋ ਹੀ ਸੁਚੱਜੀ ਮੱਤ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ, ਜੋ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਵੀ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ|
ਹੋਰ ਕਚੀ ਮਤੀ ਕਚੁ ਪਿਚੁ ਅੰਧਿਆ ਅੰਧੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
hor kachee matee kach pich anDhi-aa anDh beechaar.
All other advice is false and shallow and consists of baseless thinking of spiritually ignorant people.
ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਮੱਤਾਂ ਕੱਚੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਉੱਦਮ ਕੱਚੇ-ਪਿੱਲੇ ਹਨ (ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝੇ ਹੋਏ) ਅੰਨ੍ਹਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਸੋਚ ਵੀਚਾਰ ਹੀ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਮੀ ਬੰਦਗੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਲੰਘਾਏ ਪਾਰਿ ॥੨॥
naanak karmee bandagee nadar langhaa-ay paar. ||2||
O’ Nanak, by God’s grace, one is blessed with devotional worship and by His grace He ferries us across the world-ocean of vices. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਇਹ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥

Pauree:
ਨਾਇ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਗਈ ਮਤਿ ਪਰਗਟੀ ਆਇਆ ॥
naa-ay mani-ai durmat ga-ee mat pargatee aa-i-aa.
With faith in Naam,evil-mindedness goes away and Divine wisdom manifests.
ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਮੰਨਣ ਨਾਲ ਭੈੜੀ ਮੱਤ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਚੰਗੀ) ਮੱਤ ਚਮਕ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ|
ਨਾਉ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਹਉਮੈ ਗਈ ਸਭਿ ਰੋਗ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥
naa-o mani-ai ha-umai ga-ee sabh rog gavaa-i-aa.
By believing in Naam, the ego vanishes and all afflictions of mind vanish.
ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਮੰਨਣ ਨਾਲ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਸਾਰੇ ਹੀ (ਮਨ ਦੇ) ਰੋਗ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ|
ਨਾਇ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਨਾਮੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਸਹਜੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
naa-ay mani-ai naam oopjai sehjay sukh paa-i-aa.
By believing in Naam, an inspiration to lovingly remember Naam wells up in the mind and inner peace is attained by reaching the state of equipoise
ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਮੰਨਣ ਨਾਲ (ਮਨ ਵਿਚ) ਨਾਮ (ਜਪਣ ਦਾ ਚਾਉ) ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਅਡੋਲ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਅੱਪੜ ਕੇ ਸੁਖ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ;
ਨਾਇ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਊਪਜੈ ਹਰਿ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਇਆ ॥
naa-ay mani-ai saaNt oopjai har man vasaa-i-aa.
By believing in Naam, tranquility wells up and one enshrines God in one’s mind.
ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਮੰਨਣ ਨਾਲ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਠੰਢ ਵਰਤ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਤੰਨੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥੧੧॥
naanak naam ratann hai gurmukh har Dhi-aa-i-aa. ||11||
O’ Nanak, Naam is precious like a jewel, but only that person lovingly remembers God who follows the Guru’s teachings. ||11||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ) ਨਾਮ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਇਕ ਮੋਤੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੧॥

Shalok, First Guru:
ਹੋਰੁ ਸਰੀਕੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਕੋਈ ਤੇਰਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਅਗੈ ਤੁਧੁ ਆਖਾਂ ॥
hor sareek hovai ko-ee tayraa tis agai tuDh aakhaaN.
O’ God, if there was anyone equal to You, I would go and talk to him about You,
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਤੇਰੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਦਾ ਹੋਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਜ਼ਿਕਰ ਕਰਾਂ।
ਤੁਧੁ ਅਗੈ ਤੁਧੈ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਮੈ ਅੰਧੇ ਨਾਉ ਸੁਜਾਖਾ ॥
tuDh agai tuDhai saalaahee mai anDhay naa-o sujaakhaa.
I have to praise You before Yourself, even though I am known as wise, but I am spiritually ignorant.
(ਸੋ) ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਹੀ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਚਾਹੇ ਮੈਂ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਹਾਂ ਫਿਰ ਭੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਸੁਜਾਖਾ ਹੈ।
ਜੇਤਾ ਆਖਣੁ ਸਾਹੀ ਸਬਦੀ ਭਾਖਿਆ ਭਾਇ ਸੁਭਾਈ ॥
jaytaa aakhan saahee sabdee bhaakhi-aa bhaa-ay subhaa-ee.
But whatever I have said, through some spoken and written words, in Your praises is due to Your love for me.
ਲਿਖ ਕੇ ਜਾਂ ਬੋਲ ਕੇ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ ਵਿਚ ਆਖਿਆ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਸਭ ਤੇਰੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਦੀ ਖਿੱਚ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਆਖਿਆ ਹੈ;
ਨਾਨਕ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਏਹੋ ਆਖਣੁ ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੧॥
naanak bahutaa ayho aakhan sabh tayree vadi-aa-ee. ||1||
O’ Nanak, the greatest thing to say is that all glory is Yours. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡੀ ਗੱਲ ਆਖਣੀ ਇਹੋ ਫਬਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ (ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਹੈ) ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹੈ ॥੧॥

First Guru:
ਜਾਂ ਨ ਸਿਆ ਕਿਆ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਜਾਂ ਜੰਮੇ ਕਿਆ ਕਾਰ ॥
jaaN na si-aa ki-aa chaakree jaaN jammay ki-aa kaar.
When the human being was not yet born, what job did he do, and what could he do even after being born.
ਜਦੋਂ ਜੀਵ ਹੋਂਦ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਆਇਆ ਤਦੋਂ ਇਹ ਕੇਹੜੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਸੀ, ਤੇ ਜਦੋਂ ਜੰਮ ਪਏ ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਕੇਹੜੀ ਕਿਰਤ ਕੀਤੀ?
ਸਭਿ ਕਾਰਣ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਦੇਖੈ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰ ॥
sabh kaaran kartaa karay daykhai vaaro vaar.
Actually, the Creator creates all reasons and always takes care of all creatures.
ਜਿਸਨੇ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਾਰੇ ਸਬੱਬ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ;
ਜੇ ਚੁਪੈ ਜੇ ਮੰਗਿਐ ਦਾਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ॥
jay chupai jay mangi-ai daat karay daataar.
Whether we remain silent or ask for, the beneficent God blesses us with bounties.
ਭਾਵੇਂ ਚੁੱਪ ਕਰ ਰਹੀਏ ਤੇ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਮੰਗੀਏ, ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਇਕੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਭਿ ਮੰਗਤੇ ਫਿਰਿ ਦੇਖਹਿ ਆਕਾਰੁ ॥
ik daataa sabh mangtay fir daykheh aakaar.
After roaming around the entire world all conclude that God is the only one benefactor and all others are seekers from Him.
ਜਦੋਂ ਜੀਵ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਫਿਰ ਕੇ (ਇਹ ਗੱਲ) ਵੇਖ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਤਾਂ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ) ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾਤਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮੰਗਤੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਏਵੈ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਜੀਵੈ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
naanak ayvai jaanee-ai jeevai dayvanhaar. ||2||
O’ Nanak, this way, it becomes clear that the benefactor God lives forever. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਮਝ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਸਦਾ ਹੀ) ਜੀਉਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥

Pauree:
ਨਾਇ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਊਪਜੈ ਨਾਮੇ ਮਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥
naa-ay mani-ai surat oopjai naamay mat ho-ee.
By believing in Naam, true understanding arises in us, and through Naam, we gain true wisdom.
ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਮੰਨਣ ਨਾਲ (ਅੰਦਰ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ) ਲਿਵ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਈ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਮੱਤ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ|
ਨਾਇ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਗੁਣ ਉਚਰੈ ਨਾਮੇ ਸੁਖਿ ਸੋਈ ॥
naa-ay mani-ai gun uchrai naamay sukh so-ee.
By believing in Naam, one starts reciting God’s praises and through Naam, one becomes blissful.
ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਮੰਨਣ ਨਾਲ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਆਖਣ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਸੁਖ ਆਨੰਦ ਨਾਲ ਟਿਕਦਾ ਹੈ|
ਨਾਇ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਕਟੀਐ ਫਿਰਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
naa-ay mani-ai bharam katee-ai fir dukh na ho-ee.
By having faith in Naam, doubt is dispelled and then no suffering afflicts.
ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਮੰਨਣ ਨਾਲ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਕੱਟੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਕੋਈ ਦੁੱਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਿਆਪਦਾ|
ਨਾਇ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਮਤਿ ਧੋਈ ॥
naa-ay mani-ai salaahee-ai paapaaN mat Dho-ee.
By believing in Naam, one starts praising God and one’s evil-mindedness is cleansed.
ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਮੰਨਣ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਨ ਲੱਗ ਪਈਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਮੱਤ ਧੁੱਪ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਨਾਉ ਮੰਨੀਐ ਜਿਨ ਦੇਵੈ ਸੋਈ ॥੧੨॥
naanak pooray gur tay naa-o mannee-ai jin dayvai so-ee. ||12||
O’ Nanak, only through the perfect Guru one comes to believe in Naam and they alone receive this gift, to whom God Himself bestows it. ||12||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪੂਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਇਹ ਨਿਸ਼ਚਾ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਨਾਮ ਮੰਨਣ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਜਾਚ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਇਹ ਦਾਤ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ) ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੨॥
ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Shalok, First Guru:
ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਪੜ੍ਹ੍ਹੰਤਾ ॥
saastar bayd puraan parhHaNtaa.
As long as a person keeps only reading Shastras, Vedas and Puranas (holy books) without understanding,
(ਜਦ ਤਕ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਵੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣ (ਆਦਿਕ ਧਰਮ-ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਿਰਾ) ਪੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਪੂਕਾਰੰਤਾ ਅਜਾਣੰਤਾ ॥
pookaarantaa ajaanantaa.
and keeps loudly talking about them but he himself does not understand their essence,
(ਉਤਨਾ ਚਿਰ) ਉੱਚੀ ਉੱਚੀ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ (ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਣਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ਪਰ ਆਪ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ;
ਜਾਂ ਬੂਝੈ ਤਾਂ ਸੂਝੈ ਸੋਈ ॥
jaaN boojhai taaN soojhai so-ee.
It is only when one understands the essence, then one is able to realize and visualize God everywhere.
ਜਦੋਂ (ਧਰਮ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦਾ) ਭੇਤ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਦੋਂ (ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹੀ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਆਖੈ ਕੂਕ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੧॥
naanak aakhai kook na ho-ee. ||1||
Nanak says, there is no need of loud cries any more. ||1||
ਤੇ, ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਟਾਹਰਾਂ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ ਬੋਲਣ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ॥੧॥

First Guru:
ਜਾਂ ਹਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਤਾਂ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਹਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਤੂ ਹੋਵਹਿ ॥
jaaN ha-o tayraa taaN sabh kichh mayraa ha-o naahee too hoveh.
When I become Yours, then I feel that everything is mine because then I do not have any ego, and I visualize You everywhere,
ਜਦੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਤਦੋਂ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਜਾਪਦਾ ਹੈ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਸ ਵੇਲੇ) ਮੇਰੀ ਅਪਣੱਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ, ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈਂ,
ਆਪੇ ਸਕਤਾ ਆਪੇ ਸੁਰਤਾ ਸਕਤੀ ਜਗਤੁ ਪਰੋਵਹਿ ॥
aapay saktaa aapay surtaa saktee jagat paroveh.
I realize that You Yourself are all powerful, have true awareness about everything, and You run the world under the power of Your law.
ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ, ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸੁਰਤ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਸੱਤਿਆ (ਦੇ ਧਾਗੇ) ਵਿਚ ਪਰੋਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਜਾਪਦਾ ਹੈਂ।
ਆਪੇ ਭੇਜੇ ਆਪੇ ਸਦੇ ਰਚਨਾ ਰਚਿ ਰਚਿ ਵੇਖੈ ॥
aapay bhayjay aapay saday rachnaa rach rach vaykhai.
On His own, God sends mortals to the world; on His own, He calls them back and takes care of the creation after creating it time and again.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਥੇ) ਭੇਜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਇਥੋਂ ਵਾਪਸ) ਬੁਲਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ;
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚਾ ਸਚੀ ਨਾਂਈ ਸਚੁ ਪਵੈ ਧੁਰਿ ਲੇਖੈ ॥੨॥
naanak sachaa sachee naaN-ee sach pavai Dhur laykhai. ||2||
O’ Nanak, God is eternal, His Name is eternal, and only remembrance of His Name with love is approved in His presence. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ; ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਹੀ ਉਸਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਕਬੂਲ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥

ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਅਲਖੁ ਹੈ ਕਿਉ ਲਖਿਆ ਜਾਈ ॥
naam niranjan alakh hai ki-o lakhi-aa jaa-ee.
Since the immaculate Name of God is incomprehensible, how can it be comprehended?
ਮਾਇਆ-ਰਹਿਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਮਝ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ , ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਜਾਏ?
ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਨਾਲਿ ਹੈ ਕਿਉ ਪਾਈਐ ਭਾਈ ॥
naam niranjan naal hai ki-o paa-ee-ai bhaa-ee.
O’ brother, even though the Name of the immaculate God is within us, how can we realize it?
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮਾਇਆ-ਰਹਿਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਅਸਾਡੇ) ਨਾਲ (ਭੀ) ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਉਹ ਲੱਭੇ ਕਿਵੇਂ?
ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਰਵਿਆ ਸਭ ਠਾਂਈ ॥
naam niranjan varatdaa ravi-aa sabh thaaN-ee.
The Name of the immaculate God abides in all of us and pervades all places.
ਮਾਇਆ-ਰਹਿਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸਭ ਵਿਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸਭ ਥਾਈਂ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ|
ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਤੇ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਦੇਇ ਦਿਖਾਈ ॥
gur pooray tay paa-ee-ai hirdai day-ay dikhaa-ee.
Naam is received from the true Guru and he reveals it within our heart.
(ਇਹ ਨਾਮ) ਪੂਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਅਸਾਡੇ) ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਖਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਕਰਮੁ ਹੋਇ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲੀਐ ਭਾਈ ॥੧੩॥
naanak nadree karam ho-ay gur milee-ai bhaa-ee. ||13||
O’ Nanak, say, O’ brother, it is only when we are blessed with God’s grace, that we meet and follow the Guru’s teachings. ||13||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਦੋਂ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਵੱਲੀ) ਨਿਗਾਹ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਹਰ ਹੋਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲੀਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੩॥

Shalok, First Guru:
ਕਲਿ ਹੋਈ ਕੁਤੇ ਮੁਹੀ ਖਾਜੁ ਹੋਆ ਮੁਰਦਾਰੁ॥
kal ho-ee kutay muhee khaaj ho-aa murdaar.
In KalYug one’s intellect has become greedy like a dog, and taking bribes has become his regular habit like dogs eating carcasses.
ਕਲਯੁਗ ਅੰਦਰ ਮਨੁਖ ਨੂੰ ਕੁੱਤੇ ਵਾਂਗ ਖਾਣ ਦਾ ਹਲਕ ਕੁੱਦਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਵੱਢੀ ਆਦਿਕ ਹਰਾਮ ਚੀਜ਼ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ-ਭਾਉਂਦਾ ਖਾਣਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕੁੱਤੇ ਦਾ ਮਨ-ਭਾਉਂਦਾ ਖਾਣਾ ਮੁਰਦਾਰ ਹੈ);
ਕੂੜੁ ਬੋਲਿ ਬੋਲਿ ਭਉਕਣਾ ਚੂਕਾ ਧਰਮੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
koorh bol bol bha-ukanaa chookaa Dharam beechaar.
He keeps telling lies as if he is barking like dogs, and his reflection on righteousness is gone.
ਉਹ) ਸਦਾ ਝੂਠ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕੁੱਤੇ ਵਾਂਗ ਭਉਂਕ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਪਵਿੱਤਰਤਾ ਦਾ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ;
ਜਿਨ ਜੀਵੰਦਿਆ ਪਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਮੁਇਆ ਮੰਦੀ ਸੋਇ ॥
jin jeevandi-aa pat nahee mu-i-aa mandee so-ay.
Those who do not earn any respect while alive, will have a bad reputation after death.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਜੀਉਦਿਆਂ ਕੋਈ ਇਜ਼ਤ ਨਹੀਂ, ਮਰਨ ਮਗਰੋ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਭੈੜੀ ਸ਼ੁਹਰਤ ਹੋਵੇਗੀ।
