ਲਾਲ ਲਾਲ ਮੋਹਨ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਤੂ ॥
laal laal mohan gopaal too.
O’ dear beloved, You are the mind captivating God of the universe.
ਹੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ !,ਤੂੰ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਮੋਹ ਲੈਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਜਗਤ-ਰੱਖਿਅਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹੈਂ।
ਕੀਟ ਹਸਤਿ ਪਾਖਾਣ ਜੰਤ ਸਰਬ ਮੈ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲ ਤੂ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
keet hasat paakhaan jant sarab mai partipaal too. ||1|| rahaa-o.
O’ the sustainer of all, You are pervading all, including tiny insects, mighty elephants and the creatures thriving in the stones. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਸਭ ਦੇ ਪਾਲਣਹਾਰ! ਕੀੜੇ, ਹਾਥੀ, ਪੱਥਰਾਂ ਦੇ (ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦੇ) ਜੰਤ-ਇਹਨਾਂ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਤੂੰ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈਂ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਨਹ ਦੂਰਿ ਪੂਰਿ ਹਜੂਰਿ ਸੰਗੇ ॥
nah door poor hajoor sangay.
O’ God, You are not far, You are pervading right in front and with us.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ (ਕਿਸੇ ਜੀਵ ਤੋਂ) ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਸਭ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਤੱਖ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ (ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ) ਨਾਲ ਹੈਂ।
ਸੁੰਦਰ ਰਸਾਲ ਤੂ ॥੧॥
sundar rasaal too. ||1||
You are beauteous and the source of bliss giving nectars. ||1||
ਤੂੰ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਸਭ ਰਸਾਂ ਦਾ ਸੋਮਾ ਹੈਂ ॥੧॥
ਨਹ ਬਰਨ ਬਰਨ ਨਹ ਕੁਲਹ ਕੁਲ ॥
nah baran baran nah kulah kul.
O’ God! You do not belong to the prevalent social classes or ancestries.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਿਥੇ ਹੋਏ) ਵਰਣਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਕੋਈ ਵਰਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ (ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਮਿਥੀਆਂ) ਕੁਲਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਕੋਈ ਕੁਲ ਨਹੀਂ ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਿਰਪਾਲ ਤੂ ॥੨॥੯॥੧੩੮॥

O’ Nanak! say, O’ God! You are merciful to all. ||2||9||138||

Raag Sarang, Fifth Guru:
ਕਰਤ ਕੇਲ ਬਿਖੈ ਮੇਲ ਚੰਦ੍ਰ ਸੂਰ ਮੋਹੇ ॥
karat kayl bikhai mayl chandar soor mohay.
Maya, the worldly riches and power, plays its deceptive roles, and arouses evil desires in people; it has captivated even the angels, like the Sun and Moon.
ਮਾਇਆ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਕਲੋਲ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਜੋੜਦੀ ਹੈ, ਚੰਦ੍ਰ ਸੂਰਜ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੇਵਤੇ ਇਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਜਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਾ ਰੱਖੇ ਹਨ।
ਉਪਜਤਾ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਦੁੰਦਰ ਨਉਪਰੀ ਝੁਨੰਤਕਾਰ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਅਨਿਗ ਭਾਉ ਕਰਤ ਫਿਰਤ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਧੋਹੇ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
upjataa bikaar dundar na-uparee jhunantkaar sundar anig bhaa-o karat firat bin gopaal Dhohay. rahaa-o.
The unruly vices well up within the people on hearing the Maya’s sounds of worldly pleasures, beautiful and mind captivating signals of Maya deceive everyone except God. ||Pause||
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪੈਰਾ ਦੀਆਂ ਝਾਜਰਾ ਦੀ ਛਣਕਾਰ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਹੇਠ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਖਰੂਦੀ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹਾਵ-ਭਾਵ ਕਰਦੀ ਫਿਰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਜਗਤ-ਰੱਖਿਅਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਨੇ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਠੱਗ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ॥
ਤੀਨਿ ਭਉਨੇ ਲਪਟਾਇ ਰਹੀ ਕਾਚ ਕਰਮਿ ਨ ਜਾਤ ਸਹੀ ਉਨਮਤ ਅੰਧ ਧੰਧ ਰਚਿਤ ਜੈਸੇ ਮਹਾ ਸਾਗਰ ਹੋਹੇ ॥੧॥
teen bha-unay laptaa-ay rahee kaach karam na jaat sahee unmat anDh DhanDh rachit jaisay mahaa saagar hohay. ||1||
Maya clings to all three worlds, the spiritually ignorant people remain engrossed in love for it; the ritualistic deeds cannot ward off its effects and they keep suffering as if they are being tossed about in the mighty ocean. ||1||
ਮਾਇਆ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਭਵਨਾਂ (ਦੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ) ਨੂੰ ਚੰਬੜੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਕੱਚੇ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਸੱਟ) ਸਹਾਰੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ। ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਧੰਧਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਰੁੱਝੇ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਜੀਵ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਇਉਂ ਧੱਕੇ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਵੱਡੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚ ਧੱਕੇ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥
ਉਧਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਸੰਤ ਦਾਸ ਕਾਟਿ ਦੀਨੀ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਫਾਸ ਪਤਿਤ ਪਾਵਨ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਾ ਕੋ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਓਹੇ ॥੨॥੧੦॥੧੩੯॥੩॥੧੩॥੧੫੫॥
uDhray har sant daas kaat deenee jam kee faas patit paavan naam jaa ko simar naanak ohay. ||2||10||139||3||13||155||
God’s saints and devotees escaped from the effect of Maya, because God has cut away their noose of demons (vices): O’ Nanak, God, whose Name is the purifier of sinners, remember Him with adoration. ||2||10||139||3||13||155||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਸੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਾਸ ਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਅਸਰ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਜਮਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਕੱਟ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪਾਪੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸੇ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਕਰ ॥੨॥੧੦॥੧੩੯॥੩॥੧੩॥੧੫੫॥
ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

One eternal God, realized by the grace of the True Guru:
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।

Raag Sarang, Ninth Guru:
ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਤੇਰੋ ਕੋ ਨ ਸਹਾਈ ॥
har bin tayro ko na sahaa-ee.
O’ my friend, except for God, there is no one who is your true helper.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਤੇਰਾ (ਹੋਰ) ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
ਕਾਂ ਕੀ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੁਤ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਕੋ ਕਾਹੂ ਕੋ ਭਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kaaN kee maat pitaa sut banitaa ko kaahoo ko bhaa-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
It doesn’t matter who is anybody’s mother, father, son, daughter, or brother, (because at the time of death no one can help anyone), ||1||Pause||
ਕੌਣ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ ਮਾਂ? ਕੌਣ ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ ਪਿਉ? ਕੌਣ ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ? ਕੌਣ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ ਵਹੁਟੀ? ਕੌਣ ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ ਭਰਾ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ? ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਧਨੁ ਧਰਨੀ ਅਰੁ ਸੰਪਤਿ ਸਗਰੀ ਜੋ ਮਾਨਿਓ ਅਪਨਾਈ ॥
Dhan Dharnee ar sampat sagree jo maani-o apnaa-ee.
All the wealth, land and property which you consider your own,
ਇਹ ਧਨ ਧਰਤੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਮਝੀ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੈ,
ਤਨ ਛੂਟੈ ਕਛੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਚਾਲੈ ਕਹਾ ਤਾਹਿ ਲਪਟਾਈ ॥੧॥
tan chhootai kachh sang na chaalai kahaa taahi laptaa-ee. ||1||
when you leave your body, nothing shall go along with you, then why do you remain clinging to them? ||1||
ਜਦੋਂ ਸਰੀਰ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਸਾਥ ਮੁੱਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕੋਈ ਚੀਜ਼ ਭੀ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਤੁਰਦੀ। ਫਿਰ ਕਿਉਂ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਚੰਬੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ? ॥੧॥
ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨ ਤਾ ਸਿਉ ਰੁਚਿ ਨ ਬਢਾਈ ॥
deen da-i-aal sadaa dukh bhanjan taa si-o ruch na badhaa-ee.
You have not enhanced your love with God who is merciful to the helpless and forever the destroyer of sorrows.
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਗਰੀਬਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਸਦਾ ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਤੂੰ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਧਾਈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਹਤ ਜਗਤ ਸਭ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਜਿਉ ਸੁਪਨਾ ਰੈਨਾਈ ॥੨॥੧॥
naanak kahat jagat sabh mithi-aa ji-o supnaa rainaa-ee. ||2||1||
Nanak says, the entire world is an illusion, like a dream in the night. ||2||1||
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਰਾਤ ਦਾ ਸੁਪਨਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਿਵੇਂ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਹੈ ॥੨॥੧॥

Raag Sarang, Ninth Guru,
ਕਹਾ ਮਨ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਸਿਉ ਲਪਟਾਹੀ ॥
kahaa man bikhi-aa si-o laptaahee.
O’ my mind, why are you engrossed in the love for materialism?
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਤੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਨਾਲ (ਹੀ) ਚੰਬੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ?
ਯਾ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਕੋਊ ਰਹਨੁ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਇਕਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਇਕਿ ਜਾਹੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
yaa jag meh ko-oo rahan na paavai ik aavahi ik jaahee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
No one remains in this world; many take birth and many die. ||1||Pause||
ਇਸ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਦਾ। ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜੰਮਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ ਮਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਕਾਂ ਕੋ ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਪਤਿ ਕਾਂ ਕੀ ਕਾ ਸਿਉ ਨੇਹੁ ਲਗਾਹੀ ॥
kaaN ko tan Dhan sampat kaaN kee kaa si-o nayhu lagaahee.
Whose body and wealth is this? whose property is this? With what are you in love?
ਕਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਅਤੇ ਦੌਲਤ ਹੈ? ਕਿਸ ਦੀ ਜਾਇਦਾਦ ਹੈ? ਤੂੰ ਕਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਬਣਾਈ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੈਂ?
ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਸੋ ਸਗਲ ਬਿਨਾਸੈ ਜਿਉ ਬਾਦਰ ਕੀ ਛਾਹੀ ॥੧॥
jo deesai so sagal binaasai ji-o baadar kee chhaahee. ||1||
Whatever you see shall all disappear, like the shadow of a passing cloud. ||1||
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਬੱਦਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਛਾਂ ਹੈ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਦਿੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਸਭ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਤਜਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ਸਰਣਿ ਸੰਤਨ ਗਹੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਹੋਹਿ ਛਿਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥
taj abhimaan saran santan gahu mukat hohi chhin maahee.
O’ my mind, give up your ego, grasp the shelter of the saints and you would be liberated from the bonds of Maya in an instant.
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਛੱਡ, ਤੇ, ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਫੜ। (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਇਕ ਛਿਨ ਵਿਚ ਤੂੰ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਸੁਤੰਤਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਹਿਂਗਾ।
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਵੰਤ ਭਜਨ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਭੀ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੨॥੨॥
jan naanak bhagvant bhajan bin sukh supnai bhee naahee. ||2||2||
O’ devotee Nanak, without lovingly remembering God, there is no inner peace even in dreams. ||2||2||
ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਭਜਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਦੇ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਸੁਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ॥੨॥੨॥

Raag Sarang, Ninth Guru:
ਕਹਾ ਨਰ ਅਪਨੋ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਵੈ ॥
kahaa nar apno janam gavaavai.
I don’t understand why one wastes his life in vain,
ਪਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਿਉਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਅਜਾਈਂ ਬਰਬਾਦ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮਾਇਆ ਮਦਿ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਰਸਿ ਰਚਿਓ ਰਾਮ ਸਰਨਿ ਨਹੀ ਆਵੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
maa-i-aa mad bikhi-aa ras rachi-o raam saran nahee aavai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
he remains engrossed in the enjoyment of worldly pleasures, but does not seek God’s refuge. ||1||Pause||
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਮਸਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਦ ਵਿਚ ਰੁੱਝਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਸਗਲ ਹੈ ਸੁਪਨੋ ਦੇਖਿ ਕਹਾ ਲੋਭਾਵੈ ॥
ih sansaar sagal hai supno daykh kahaa lobhaavai.
This entire world is like a dream, (I don’t know) why one is lured by seeing it?
ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਵਾਂਗ ਹੈ,, ਪਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਿਉਂ ਲੁਭਾਇਮਾਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
ਜੋ ਉਪਜੈ ਸੋ ਸਗਲ ਬਿਨਾਸੈ ਰਹਨੁ ਨ ਕੋਊ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
jo upjai so sagal binaasai rahan na ko-oo paavai. ||1||
Whoever are born here, they all shall die; no one can stay here forever ||1||
ਇੱਥੇ ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਕੋਈ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਹਰੇਕ ਹੀ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਥੇ ਸਦਾ ਲਈ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਟਿਕ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੧॥
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਤਨੁ ਸਾਚੋ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨਿਓ ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਆਪੁ ਬੰਧਾਵੈ ॥
mithi-aa tan saacho kar maani-o ih biDh aap banDhaavai.
By believing this perishable body as permanent, one keeps himself entangled in the worldly bonds.
ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸਮਝ ਕੇ, ਜੀਵ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ (ਮੋਹ ਦੀਆਂ ਫਾਹੀਆਂ ਵਿਚ) ਫਸਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋਊ ਜਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਾ ਰਾਮ ਭਜਨ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਵੈ ॥੨॥੩॥
jan naanak so-oo jan muktaa raam bhajan chit laavai. ||2||3||
O’ devotee Nanak, only that person is liberated from this bondage who focuses his mind on remembering God with adoration. ||2||3||
ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸੁਤੰਤਰ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਹੜਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਭਜਨ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣਾ ਚਿੱਤ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥੩॥

Raag Sarang, Fifth Guru:
ਮਨ ਕਰਿ ਕਬਹੂ ਨ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇਓ ॥
man kar kabhoo na har gun gaa-i-o.
O’ God! I never sang Your praises with my mind totally in it.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਮਨ ਲਾ ਕੇ ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਗਾਏ ।
