Raag Basant, Fifth Guru, First beat, Du-Tukee (two stanzas):
ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik-oNkaar satgur parsaad.
One eternal God, realized by the grace of the True Guru:
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸੁਣਿ ਸਾਖੀ ਮਨ ਜਪਿ ਪਿਆਰ ॥
sun saakhee man jap pi-aar.
O’ my mind, listen to the stories of the devotees and lovingly remember God.
ਹੇ (ਮੇਰੇ) ਮਨ! ਭਗਤਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਾਖੀਆਂ ਸੁਣ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰ।
ਅਜਾਮਲੁ ਉਧਰਿਆ ਕਹਿ ਏਕ ਬਾਰ ॥
ajaamal uDhri-aa kahi ayk baar.
Ajaamal uttered God’s Name once, and he was saved.
ਕੇਵਲ ਇਕ ਦਫਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ, ਅਜਾਮਲ ਦੀ ਕਲਿਆਣ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਸੀ।
ਬਾਲਮੀਕੈ ਹੋਆ ਸਾਧਸੰਗੁ ॥
baalmeekai ho-aa saaDhsang.
Baalmeek, a highway robber, attained the company of the Guru and was saved.
ਬਾਲਮੀਕ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਈ (ਤੇ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਪਾਰ-ਉਤਾਰਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ)
ਧ੍ਰੂ ਕਉ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਿਸੰਗ ॥੧॥
Dharoo ka-o mili-aa har nisang. ||1||
God undoubtedly blessed His vision to His devotee Dharoo. ||1||
(ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ) ਧ੍ਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਪ੍ਰਤੱਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਮਿਲ ਪਿਆ ॥੧॥
ਤੇਰਿਆ ਸੰਤਾ ਜਾਚਉ ਚਰਨ ਰੇਨ ॥
tayri-aa santaa jaacha-o charan rayn.
O’ God, I beg for the dust of the feet (the most humble service) of Your saints.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹਾਂ,
ਲੇ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲਾਵਉ ਕਰਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਦੇਨ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
lay mastak laava-o kar kirpaa dayn. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Please bestow mercy and bless me with it; I will apply it to my forehead (I will serve them happily with utmost sincerity). ||1||Pause||
ਦੇਣ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰ (ਉਹ ਚਰਨ-ਧੂੜ ਲੈ ਕੇ) ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਤੇ ਲਾਵਾਂਗਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਗਨਿਕਾ ਉਧਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਕਹੈ ਤੋਤ ॥
ganikaa uDhree har kahai tot.
While teaching her parrot to say God’s Name, Ganika herself was uttering God’s Name and she was saved by doing so.
ਤੋਤੇ ਨੂੰ ਰਾਮ-ਨਾਮ ਸਿਖਾਲਣ ਲਈ ਗਨਿਕਾ ਭੀ ਰਾਮ-ਨਾਮ ਉਚਾਰਦੀ ਸੀ, ਜਿਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਗਨਿਕਾ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਗਈ।
ਗਜਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਧਿਆਇਓ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਓ ਮੋਖ ॥
gaj-indar Dhi-aa-i-o har kee-o mokh.
(Gandhrab was cursed to become an elephant), he also was saved from the clutches of the deadly crocodile when he remembered God.
ਸਰਾਪ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਗੰਧਰਬ ਤੋਂ ਬਣੇ ਹੋਏ) ਵੱਡੇ ਹਾਥੀ ਨੇ (ਸਰੋਵਰ ਵਿਚ ਤੰਦੂਏ ਦੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰਿਆ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਤੰਦੂਏ ਦੀ) ਫਾਹੀ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਬਚਾ ਲਿਆ।
ਬਿਪ੍ਰ ਸੁਦਾਮੇ ਦਾਲਦੁ ਭੰਜ ॥
bipar sudaamay daalad bhanj.
The lord Krishna delivered the poor Brahmin Sudama out of poverty.
ਸੁਦਾਮੇ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਦੀ (ਕ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨ ਜੀ ਨੇ) ਗਰੀਬੀ ਕੱਟੀ।
ਰੇ ਮਨ ਤੂ ਭੀ ਭਜੁ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ॥੨॥
ray man too bhee bhaj gobind. ||2||
O’ my mind, you should also lovingly remember God. ||2||
ਹੇ (ਮੇਰੇ) ਮਨ! ਤੂੰ ਭੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਭਜਨ ਕਰਿਆ ਕਰ ॥੨॥
ਬਧਿਕੁ ਉਧਾਰਿਓ ਖਮਿ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰ ॥
baDhik uDhaari-o kham par-haar.
Even the hunter who shot an arrow at the lord Krishna was forgiven and emancipated by the lord Krishne.
ਹੇ (ਮੇਰੇ) ਮਨ! (ਕ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ) ਤੀਰ ਨਾਲ ਮਾਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰੀ ਨੂੰ (ਕ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
ਕੁਬਿਜਾ ਉਧਰੀ ਅੰਗੁਸਟ ਧਾਰ ॥
kubijaa uDhree angusat Dhaar.
Kubija was saved (just by the) touch of the thumb of lord Krishna’s foot.
(ਕ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨ ਜੀ ਦੇ) ਅੰਗੂਠੇ ਦੀ ਛੁਹ ਨਾਲ ਕੁਬਿਜਾ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਗਈ।
ਬਿਦਰੁ ਉਧਾਰਿਓ ਦਾਸਤ ਭਾਇ ॥
bidar uDhaari-o daasat bhaa-ay.
Bidar was emancipated by the lord Krishna because of his attitude of humility.
ਬਿਦਰ ਨੂੰ (ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਸੇਵਾ ਭਾਵ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ (ਕ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨ ਜੀ ਨੇ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
ਰੇ ਮਨ ਤੂ ਭੀ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇ ॥੩॥
ray man too bhee har Dhi-aa-ay. ||3||
O’ my mind, you too must lovingly remember God. ||3||
ਹੇ (ਮੇਰੇ) ਮਨ! ਤੂੰ ਭੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰਿਆ ਕਰ ॥੩॥
ਪ੍ਰਹਲਾਦ ਰਖੀ ਹਰਿ ਪੈਜ ਆਪ ॥
parahlaad rakhee har paij aap.
God Himself saved the honor of Prehlad.
ਪ੍ਰਹਲਾਦ ਦੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਰੱਖੀ।
ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਛੀਨਤ ਦ੍ਰੋਪਤੀ ਰਖੀ ਲਾਜ ॥
bastar chheenat daropatee rakhee laaj.
When Daropati’s clothes were being forcibly removed, God saved her honor.
(ਦੁਰਜੋਧਨ ਦੀ ਸਭਾ ਵਿਚ ਦ੍ਰੋਪਤੀ ਦੇ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਲਾਹੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ, ਤਦੋਂ (ਕ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ) ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਬਚਾਈ।
ਜਿਨਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਅੰਤ ਬਾਰ ॥
jin jin sayvi-aa ant baar.
Whoever remembered God in the last most critical moment, he was saved.
ਜਿਸ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਭੀ ਔਖੇ ਵੇਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਪੱਲਾ ਫੜਿਆ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਲਾਜ ਰੱਖੀ)।
ਰੇ ਮਨ ਸੇਵਿ ਤੂ ਪਰਹਿ ਪਾਰ ॥੪॥
ray man sayv too pareh paar. ||4||
O’ my mind, you should also lovingly remember God so that you may also cross over this worldly ocean of vices. ||4||
ਹੇ (ਮੇਰੇ) ਮਨ! ਤੂੰ ਭੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਉ, (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਹਿਂਗਾ ॥੪॥
ਧੰਨੈ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਬਾਲ ਬੁਧਿ ॥
Dhannai sayvi-aa baal buDh.
The devotee Dhanna remembered God with the innocence of a child.
ਧੰਨੇ ਨੇ ਬਾਲਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਬੁੱਧੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਮਾਈ। ।
ਤ੍ਰਿਲੋਚਨ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਭਈ ਸਿਧਿ ॥
tarilochan gur mil bha-ee siDh.
The devotee Trilochan attained perfection in spiritual life by meeting the Guru.
ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਲੋਚਨ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚ ਸਫਲਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਈ।
ਬੇਣੀ ਕਉ ਗੁਰਿ ਕੀਓ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸੁ ॥
baynee ka-o gur kee-o pargaas.
The Guru also enlightened the mind of the devotee Baini.
ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ (ਭਗਤ) ਬੇਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਚਾਨਣ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਿਆ।
ਰੇ ਮਨ ਤੂ ਭੀ ਹੋਹਿ ਦਾਸੁ ॥੫॥
ray man too bhee hohi daas. ||5||
O’ my mind, you should also become God’s devotee. ||5||
ਹੇ (ਮੇਰੇ) ਮਨ! ਤੂੰ ਭੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਭਗਤ (ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਬਣ ॥੫॥
ਜੈਦੇਵ ਤਿਆਗਿਓ ਅਹੰਮੇਵ ॥
jaidayv ti-aagi-o ahaNmayv.
The devotee Jaidev gave up his egotism (of belonging to the upper class).
ਜੈਦੇਵ ਨੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਹੋਣ ਦਾ) ਮਾਣ ਛੱਡਿਆ।
ਨਾਈ ਉਧਰਿਓ ਸੈਨੁ ਸੇਵ ॥
naa-ee uDhaari-o sain sayv.
Sain, the barber, was saved through his selfless service,
ਸੈਣ ਨਾਈ ਸੇਵਾ ਟਹਿਲ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਤਰ ਗਿਆ.
ਮਨੁ ਡੀਗਿ ਨ ਡੋਲੈ ਕਹੂੰ ਜਾਇ ॥
man deeg na dolai kahoo-aN jaa-ay.
because his mind did not waver by falling in the trap of Maya and did not wander anywhere.
(ਸੈਣ ਦਾ) ਮਨ ਕਿਸੇ ਭੀ ਥਾਂ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਠੇਡਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ) ਡਿੱਗ ਕੇ ਡੋਲਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ।
ਮਨ ਤੂ ਭੀ ਤਰਸਹਿ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਾਇ ॥੬॥
man too bhee tarseh saran paa-ay. ||6||
O’ my mind, you would also be ferried across this worldly ocean of vices by seeking the Guru’s refuge. ||6||
ਹੇ (ਮੇਰੇ) ਮਨ! (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ) ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਭੀ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਹਿਂਗਾ ॥੬॥
ਜਿਹ ਅਨੁਗ੍ਰਹੁ ਠਾਕੁਰਿ ਕੀਓ ਆਪਿ ॥
jih anoograhu thaakur kee-o aap.
O’ God, those upon whom You bestowed grace,
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਤੈਂ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਮਿਹਰ ਕੀਤੀ,
ਸੇ ਤੈਂ ਲੀਨੇ ਭਗਤ ਰਾਖਿ ॥
say taiN leenay bhagat raakh.
You saved those devotees from the world-ocean of vices.
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਬਚਾ ਲਿਆ।
ਤਿਨ ਕਾ ਗੁਣੁ ਅਵਗਣੁ ਨ ਬੀਚਾਰਿਓ ਕੋਇ ॥
tin kaa gun avgan na beechaari-o ko-ay.
You did not take into account any of their virtues or sins.
ਤੂੰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਨਾਹ ਕੋਈ ਗੁਣ ਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਕੋਈ ਔਗੁਣ ਵਿਚਾਰਿਆ।
ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਦੇਖਿ ਮਨੁ ਲਗਾ ਸੇਵ ॥੭॥
ih biDh daykh man lagaa sayv. ||7||
Seeing this way of Your kindness, my mind is engaged in Your devotional worship. ||7||
ਤੇਰੀ ਇਸ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੀ ਦਇਆਲਤਾ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ (ਮੇਰਾ ਭੀ) ਮਨ (ਤੇਰੀ) ਭਗਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਕਬੀਰਿ ਧਿਆਇਓ ਏਕ ਰੰਗ ॥
kabeer Dhi-aa-i-o ayk rang.
The devotee Kabir meditated on God with loving devotion.
ਕਬੀਰ ਨੇ ਇਕ-ਰਸ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰਿਆ।
ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਬਸਹਿ ਸੰਗਿ ॥
naamdayv har jee-o baseh sang.
The reverend God was always with the devotee Namdev.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੀ ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਭੀ ਨਾਲ ਵੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਰਵਿਦਾਸ ਧਿਆਏ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਅਨੂਪ ॥
ravidaas Dhi-aa-ay parabh anoop.
The devotee Ravidas meditated on the incomparably beautiful God.
ਰਵਿਦਾਸ ਨੇ ਭੀ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕੀਤਾ।
ਗੁਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਰੂਪ ॥੮॥੧॥
gur naanak dayv govind roop. ||8||1||
O’ Nanak, Guru is the embodiment of God, (so you should remain in the Guru’s refuge). ||8||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰੂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ (ਤੂੰ ਭੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆ ਰਹੁ) ॥੮॥੧॥

Raag Basant, Fifth Guru:
ਅਨਿਕ ਜਨਮ ਭ੍ਰਮੇ ਜੋਨਿ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
anik janam bharamay jon maahi.
Human beings keep wandering through innumerable incarnations in many births.
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜਨਮਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਰਕਿ ਪਾਹਿ ॥
har simran bin narak paahi.
Without remembering God, they endure such sufferings as if they are in hell.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਰਕ ਵਿਚ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਭਗਤਿ ਬਿਹੂਨਾ ਖੰਡ ਖੰਡ ॥
bhagat bihoonaa khand khand.
Without devotional worship, their mind remains scattered in many directions, as if it is shattered into pieces.
ਭਗਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਦੌੜਾਂ-ਭੱਜਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਟੋਟੇ ਟੋਟੇ ਹੋਇਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਜਮੁ ਦੇਤ ਡੰਡ ॥੧॥
bin boojhay jam dayt dand. ||1||
Without the understanding of righteous living, they are tormented by the fear of the demon of death. ||1||
ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜਮਰਾਜ ਭੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਜ਼ਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਭਜਹੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਦਾ ਮੀਤ ॥
gobind bhajahu mayray sadaa meet.
O’ my friends, always meditate on God, the Master of the universe,
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ! ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਭਜਨ ਕਰਿਆ ਕਰ,
ਸਾਚ ਸਬਦ ਕਰਿ ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
saach sabad kar sadaa pareet. ||1|| rahaa-o.
and always love the divine word of God’s praises. ||1||Pause||
ਅਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਨਾਲ ਸਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਬਣਾਈ ਰੱਖ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਨ ਆਵਤ ਕਹੂੰ ਕਾਜ ॥
santokh na aavat kahoo-aN kaaj.
One does not get lasting contentment by any worldly endeavors,
ਕਿਸੇ ਕਾਰ ਵਿਹਾਰ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਭੀ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਤੁਸ਼ਟਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੀ,
ਧੂੰਮ ਬਾਦਰ ਸਭਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਸਾਜ ॥
Dhoomm baadar sabh maa-i-aa saaj.
because all fancy displays of materialism are short lived like clouds of smoke.
ਕਿਉਂਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਕੌਤਕ-ਤਮਾਸ਼ੇ ਧੂੰਏ ਦੇ ਬੱਦਲ (ਹੀ) ਹਨ ।
ਪਾਪ ਕਰੰਤੌ ਨਹ ਸੰਗਾਇ ॥
paap karantou nah sangaa-ay.
One does not hesitate while committing sin (for the sake of worldly wealth).
(ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖਾਤਰ) ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਾਪ ਕਰਦਾ ਭੀ ਝਿਜਕਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਬਿਖੁ ਕਾ ਮਾਤਾ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥
bikh kaa maataa aavai jaa-ay. ||2||
Engrossed in materialism, the poison for spiritual life, he remains in the cycle of birth and death. ||2||
ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਲਿਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਮਾਇਆ-ਜ਼ਹਰ ਦਾ ਮੱਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਤ ਬਧੇ ਬਿਕਾਰ ॥
ha-o ha-o karat baDhay bikaar.
Sinful tendencies of that person multiply by remaining obsessed with selfishness,
ਮੈਂ ਮੈਂ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਵਧਦੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਮੋਹ ਲੋਭ ਡੂਬੌ ਸੰਸਾਰ ॥
moh lobh doobou sansaar.
he remains drowned in suffering due to worldly attachment and greed,
ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਅਤੇ ਲੋਭ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਡੁੱਬਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਕਾਮਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧਿ ਮਨੁ ਵਸਿ ਕੀਆ ॥
kaam kroDh man vas kee-aa.
the lust and anger have controlled his mind,
ਕਾਮ-ਵਾਸਨਾ ਨੇ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਨੇ (ਉਸ ਦਾ) ਮਨ ਸਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਕਾਬੂ ਵਿਚ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸੁਪਨੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਹਰਿ ਲੀਆ ॥੩॥
supnai naam na har lee-aa. ||3||
who has not remembered God’s Name even in his dreams. ||3||
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਕਦੇ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ॥੩॥
ਕਬ ਹੀ ਰਾਜਾ ਕਬ ਮੰਗਨਹਾਰੁ ॥
kab hee raajaa kab manganhaar.
(Devoid of Naam), sometimes one becomes a king, and sometimes a beggar,
(ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਚਾਹੇ ਕਦੇ ਰਾਜਾ ਹੈ ਚਾਹੇ ਮੰਗਤਾ,
ਦੂਖ ਸੂਖ ਬਾਧੌ ਸੰਸਾਰ ॥
dookh sookh baaDhou sansaar.
he remains bound in worldly sorrow and happiness,
ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜਕੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਮਨ ਉਧਰਣ ਕਾ ਸਾਜੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥
man uDhran kaa saaj naahi.
he makes no efforts to save his mind from drowning in the world-ocean of vices.
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਦੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਡੁੱਬਣ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚਾਣ ਦਾ ਉਹ ਕੋਈ ਉੱਦਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ।
ਪਾਪ ਬੰਧਨ ਨਿਤ ਪਉਤ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੪॥
paap banDhan nit pa-ut jaahi. ||4||
Instead he is being bound by more and more sins every day. ||4||
ਪਾਪਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਫਾਹੀਆਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਪੈਂਦੀਆਂ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ॥੪॥
ਈਠ ਮੀਤ ਕੋਊ ਸਖਾ ਨਾਹਿ ॥
eeth meet ko-oo sakhaa naahi.
None of the dear friends become companions in the end,
ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮਿੱਤਰਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ (ਤੋੜ ਤਕ ਸਾਥ ਨਿਬਾਹੁਣ ਵਾਲਾ) ਸਾਥੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਆਪਿ ਬੀਜਿ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਖਾਂਹਿ ॥
aap beej aapay hee khaaNhi.
and one bears the consequences of his deeds because one reaps what he sows.
(ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ ਚੰਗੇ ਮੰਦੇ) ਕਰਮ ਆਪ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦਾ) ਫਲ ਭੋਗਦੇ ਹਨ ।
