ਜਾਮਿ ਨ ਭੀਜੈ ਸਾਚ ਨਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jaam na bheejai saach naa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
if his heart is not imbued with the love of God’s Name. ||1||Pause||
ਜਦੋਂ ਤਕ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਭਿੱਜਦਾ (ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਂਦਾ) ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਦਸ ਅਠ ਲੀਖੇ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਪਾਸਿ ॥
das ath leekhay hoveh paas.
Even if a person owns self-written eighteen Puranas,
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ, ਜੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ ਅਠਾਰਾਂ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਲਿਖ ਕੇ ਕੋਲ ਰੱਖੇ ਹੋਏ ਹੋਣ,
ਚਾਰੇ ਬੇਦ ਮੁਖਾਗਰ ਪਾਠਿ ॥
chaaray bayd mukhaagar paath.
orally recites all the four Vedas,
ਜੇ ਪਾਠ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਚਾਰੇ ਵੇਦ ਜ਼ਬਾਨੀ ਪੜ੍ਹੇ,
ਪੁਰਬੀ ਨਾਵੈ ਵਰਨਾਂ ਕੀ ਦਾਤਿ ॥
purbee naavai varnaaN kee daat.
bathes at holy places on the so called auspicious days, donates to persons of different castes,
ਜੇ ਉਹ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਦਿਹਾੜਿਆਂ ਤੇ ਤੀਰਥੀਂ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰੇ, ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਮਰਯਾਦਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਵਖ ਵਖ ਵਰਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਦਾਨ-ਪੁੰਨ ਕਰੇ,
ਵਰਤ ਨੇਮ ਕਰੇ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤਿ ॥੨॥
varat naym karay din raat. ||2||
observes fasts, and performs all the daily rituals day and night, even then nothing is approved in His presence. ||2||
ਜੇ ਉਹ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਵਰਤ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਰਹੇ ਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਨਿਯਮ ਨਿਬਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਰਹੇ (ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਕੋਈ ਉੱਦਮ ਪਸੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ) ॥੨॥
ਕਾਜੀ ਮੁਲਾਂ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਸੇਖ ॥
kaajee mulaaN hoveh saykh.
If a person is a Qazi (Muslim judge), Mullah (Muslim priest), or a Sheikh,
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ, ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਬੰਦੇ ਕਾਜ਼ੀ ਮੁੱਲਾਂ ਸ਼ੇਖ਼ ਬਣ ਜਾਣ,
ਜੋਗੀ ਜੰਗਮ ਭਗਵੇ ਭੇਖ ॥
jogee jangam bhagvay bhaykh.
a Yogi, or a wandering sage wearing saffron colored garbs,
ਕੋਈ ਜੋਗੀ ਜੰਗਮ ਬਣ ਕੇ ਭਗਵੇ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਪਹਿਨ ਲੈਣ,
ਕੋ ਗਿਰਹੀ ਕਰਮਾ ਕੀ ਸੰਧਿ ॥
ko girhee karmaa kee sanDh.
or is a house holder performing all religious rituals,
ਕੋਈ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਸਤੀ ਬਣ ਕੇ ਪੂਰਾ ਕਰਮ-ਕਾਂਡੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ-
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਸਭ ਖੜੀਅਸਿ ਬੰਧਿ ॥੩॥
bin boojhay sabh kharhee-as banDh. ||3||
still without understanding the essence of devotional worship, all are bound and driven away by the demon of death. ||3||
ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਹਰੇਕ ਦੋਸੀਆਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਬੰਨ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਲਾ ਲਿਆ ਜਾਇਗਾ, ਜਦ ਤਕ ਉਹ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਕਦਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਿਆ, (ਜਦ ਤਕ ਉਹ ਸੱਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਤੀਜਦਾ) ॥੩॥
ਜੇਤੇ ਜੀਅ ਲਿਖੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਾਰ ॥
jaytay jee-a likhee sir kaar.
O’ my friends, all the beings are predestined to perform their deeds.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ, (ਅਸਲ ਗੱਲ ਇਹ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਜਿਤਨੇ ਭੀ ਜੀਵ ਹਨ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਇਹੀ ਹੁਕਮ-ਰੂਪ ਲੇਖ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ,
ਕਰਣੀ ਉਪਰਿ ਹੋਵਗਿ ਸਾਰ ॥
karnee upar hovag saar.
and they would be judged according to their (good or bad) deeds.
ਕਿ ਹਰੇਕ ਦੀ ਕਾਮਯਾਬੀ ਦਾ ਫ਼ੈਸਲਾ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਹੀ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ।
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਮੂਰਖ ਗਾਵਾਰ ॥
hukam karahi moorakh gaavaar.
Foolish and ignorant are those who are egotistically proud of performing religious rituals
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਸੁੱਚੇ ਕਰਮ-ਕਾਂਡ ਭੇਖ ਆਦਿਕ ਉਤੇ ਹੀ ਮਾਣ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਵੱਡੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੇ ਕੇ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਭੰਡਾਰ ॥੪॥੩॥
naanak saachay kay sifat bhandaar. ||4||3||
O’ Nanak, the treasures of God are filled with His praises, therefore, we should sing praises of God. ||4||3||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਭਰੇ ਪਏ ਹਨ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜੋ ॥੪॥੩॥
ਬਸੰਤੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ਤੀਜਾ ॥

Raag Basant, Third Guru:
ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਉਤਾਰਿ ਦਿਗੰਬਰੁ ਹੋਗੁ ॥
bastar utaar digambar hog.
If a person becomes a naked sage (Digambar) by removing Clothes,
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ, ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਉਤਾਰ ਕੇ ਨਾਂਗਾ ਸਾਧੂ ਬਣ ਜਾਏ (ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੀ ਉੱਦਮ ਹੈ)।
ਜਟਾਧਾਰਿ ਕਿਆ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਜੋਗੁ ॥
jataaDhaar ki-aa kamaavai jog.
or keeps long matted hair, even then he cannot unite with God.
ਜਟਾ ਧਾਰ ਕੇ ਭੀ ਕੋਈ ਜੋਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਮਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ। (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਜੋਗ (ਮੇਲ) ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕੇਗਾ)।
ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨਹੀ ਦਸਵੈ ਦੁਆਰ ॥
man nirmal nahee dasvai du-aar.
Similarly by holding the breath in the tenth gate (mythical Sukhmana Channel of Yoga), his mind does not become pure,
ਦਸਵੇਂ ਦੁਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਚੜ੍ਹਾਇਆਂ ਭੀ ਮਨ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ,
ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਆਵੈ ਮੂੜ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰ ॥੧॥
bharam bharam aavai moorhHaa vaaro vaar. ||1||
and that foolish person, engrossed in illusions, keeps going through the cycles birth and death. ||1||
ਅਤੇ (ਅਜੇਹੇ ਸਾਧਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗਾ ਹੋਇਆ) ਮੂਰਖ ਭਟਕ ਭਟਕ ਕੇ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਜਨਮ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਏਕੁ ਧਿਆਵਹੁ ਮੂੜ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਮਨਾ ॥
ayk Dhi-aavahu moorhH manaa.
O’ my foolish mind, meditate on one and only one God,
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨ! ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰ।
ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਇਕ ਖਿਨਾਂ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
paar utar jaahi ik khinaaN. ||1|| rahaa-o.
and you would be ferried across the worldly ocean of vices in an instant. ||1||pause||
(ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ) ਇਕ ਪਲ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਹਿਂਗਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਕਰਹਿ ਵਖਿਆਣ ॥
simrit saastar karahi vakhi-aan.
They who deliver sermons on Simritis and Shastras,
ਜਿਹੜੇ ਲੋਕ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ (ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ) ਸੁਣਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਨਾਦੀ ਬੇਦੀ ਪੜ੍ਹ੍ਹਹਿ ਪੁਰਾਣ ॥
naadee baydee parhHahi puraan.
and they who blow horns, and read Vedas and Puranas,
ਜਿਹੜੇ ਨਾਦ ਵਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਵੇਦ ਤੇ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਪੜ੍ਹਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਪਾਖੰਡ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਮਨਿ ਕਪਟੁ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥
pakhand darisat man kapat kamaahi.
but practice hypocrisy and deception in their minds,
ਪਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਪਖੰਡ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੈ, ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਖੋਟ ਕਮਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਰਮਈਆ ਨੇੜਿ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੨॥
tin kai rama-ee-aa nayrh naahi. ||2||
cannot visualize God close to them. ||2||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਅਜੇਹੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ (ਢੁਕਦਾ) ॥੨॥
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਐਸਾ ਸੰਜਮੀ ਹੋਇ ॥
jay ko aisaa sanjmee ho-ay.
Even if a person is so disciplined that he practices self-control,
ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਅਜੇਹਾ ਬੰਦਾ ਭੀ ਹੋਵੇ ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਸ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੋਵੇ,
ਕ੍ਰਿਆ ਵਿਸੇਖ ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
kir-aa visaykh poojaa karay-i.
performs worship of idols with special rituals,
ਕਿਸੇ ਉਚੇਚੀ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਆ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੋਵੇ, ਦੇਵ-ਪੂਜਾ ਭੀ ਕਰੇ,
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਮਨੁ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
antar lobh man bikhi-aa maahi.
but if he is filled with greed and his mind is engrossed in the love for Maya,
ਪਰ ਜੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੋਭ ਹੈ, ਜੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਫਸਿਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ,
ਓਇ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਕੈਸੇ ਪਾਹਿ ॥੩॥
o-ay niranjan kaisay paahi. ||3||
then how can he realize the immaculate God? ||3||
ਤਾਂ ਅਜੇਹੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਭੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਤੋਂ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ ॥੩॥
ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਆ ਕਰੇ ਕਿਆ ਹੋਇ ॥
keetaa ho-aa karay ki-aa ho-ay.
O’ my friends, one who has been created by God, what can he do by himself,
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕੀ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਰਚਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਜੀਵ ਹੈ?
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਆਪਿ ਚਲਾਏ ਸੋਇ ॥
jis no aap chalaa-ay so-ay.
especially when he is driven by God Himself according to His will?
ਅਤੇ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਪੰਧ ਉੱਤੇ ਤੋਰਿਆ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਉਹ ਜੀਵ ਉਹੀ ਰਸਤਾ ਅਖ਼ਤਿਆਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ)।
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਾਂ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਏ ॥
nadar karay taaN bharam chukaa-ay.
When God bestows His gracious glance, then He dispels his doubt.
ਜਦੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ (ਕਿਸੇ ਜੀਵ ਉਤੇ) ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹੁਕਮੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਤਾਂ ਸਾਚਾ ਪਾਏ ॥੪॥
hukmai boojhai taaN saachaa paa-ay. ||4||
One realizes God when he understands His Will. ||4||
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਜਦੋਂ ਜੀਵ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਜਿਸੁ ਜੀਉ ਅੰਤਰੁ ਮੈਲਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
jis jee-o antar mailaa ho-ay.
O’ my friends, a person whose mind is soiled with the dirt of vices,
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ, ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਅੰਦਰਲਾ ਆਤਮਾ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ) ਮੈਲਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਤੀਰਥ ਭਵੈ ਦਿਸੰਤਰ ਲੋਇ ॥
tirath bhavai disantar lo-ay.
what will he gain by wandering at the sacred places around the world?
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਜਹਾਨ ਦੇ ਮੁਲਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਧਰਮ ਅਸਥਾਨਾ ਤੇ ਫਿਰਨ ਦਾ ਕੀ ਫਾਇਦਾ ਹੈ?
ਨਾਨਕ ਮਿਲੀਐ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੰਗ ॥
naanak milee-ai satgur sang.
O’ Nanak, it is only if one finds the company of the true Guru,
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਮੇਲ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਵੇ,
ਤਉ ਭਵਜਲ ਕੇ ਤੂਟਸਿ ਬੰਧ ॥੫॥੪॥
ta-o bhavjal kay tootas banDh. ||5||4||
only then bonds of this dreadful worldly ocean of vices are broken. ||5||4||
ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਟੁੱਟਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੫॥੪॥
ਬਸੰਤੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Raag Basant, First Guru:
ਸਗਲ ਭਵਨ ਤੇਰੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ॥
sagal bhavan tayree maa-i-aa moh.
O’ God, the attachment to Your Maya (the worldly riches and power) is pervading in the entire world.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਸਾਰੇ ਭਵਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ (ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਤੇਰੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ ਪਸਾਰਾ ਹੈ।
ਮੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੀਸੈ ਸਰਬ ਤੋਹ ॥
mai avar na deesai sarab toh.
I see none other than You, and Your divine light is pervading in all.
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੈਥੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ, ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਹੈ।
ਤੂ ਸੁਰਿ ਨਾਥਾ ਦੇਵਾ ਦੇਵ ॥
too sur naathaa dayvaa dayv.
You are God of all gods and Master of all the yogis.
ਤੂੰ ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਨਾਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਭੀ ਦੇਵਤਾ ਹੈਂ।
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਨ ਸੇਵ ॥੧॥
har naam milai gur charan sayv. ||1||
Only by following the Guru’s teachings, one is blessed with God’s Name.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਹਰੀ- ਨਾਮ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਮੇਰੇ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਲਾਲ ॥
mayray sundar gahir gambheer laal.
O’ my graceful, unfathomable, and profound God,
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਲਾਲ! ਹੇ ਡੂੰਘੇ ਤੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਜਿਗਰੇ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਏ ਤੂ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਸਰਬ ਪਾਲ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gurmukh raam naam gun gaa-ay too aprampar sarab paal. ||1|| rahaa-o.
a Guru’s follower always sings praises of God’s Name, and believes that You are infinite, and sustainer of all. ||1||pause||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਤੂੰ ਬੜਾ ਹੀ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਹੈਂ ਅਤੇ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਲਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ। ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਾਧ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਸੰਗੁ ॥
bin saaDh na paa-ee-ai har kaa sang.
Without the saint Guru, we are not blessed the union with God,
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਾਥ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ,
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਮੈਲ ਮਲੀਨ ਅੰਗੁ ॥
bin gur mail maleen ang.
because without the Guru’s teaching, one’s mind remains soiled with the dirt of vices.
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਸਰੀਰ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਮੈਲ ਨਾਲ ਗੰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਨ ਸੁਧੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
bin har naam na suDh ho-ay.
A person’s mind (body) cannot be purified without remembering God’s Name.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ) ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਲਾਹੇ ਸਾਚੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੨॥
gur sabad salaahay saach so-ay. ||2||
That is why only the one, who praises God by focusing on the Guru’s word, becomes embodiment of the eternal God. ||2||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਜਾ ਕਉ ਤੂ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਰਖਨਹਾਰ ॥
jaa ka-o too raakhahi rakhanhaar.
O’ God, the savior, the person whom You want to protect,
ਹੇ ਰੱਖਣਹਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚਾਂਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈਂ,
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾਵਹਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਸਾਰ ॥
satguroo milaaveh karahi saar.
You unite him with the true Guru, who takes care of him.
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ,
ਬਿਖੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਪਰਹਰਾਇ ॥
bikh ha-umai mamtaa parahraa-ay.
You inspire him to purge the poison of ego and attachment.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਹਉਮੈ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਭਿ ਦੂਖ ਬਿਨਾਸੇ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਇ ॥੩॥
sabh dookh binaasay raam raa-ay. ||3||
O’ the sovereign God, by Your grace, all his sorrows are dispelled. ||3||
ਹੇ ਰਾਮਰਾਇ! ਤੇਰੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੩॥
ਊਤਮ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਸਰੀਰ ॥
ootam gat mit har gun sareer.
O’ my friends, if a person cultivates divine virtues, his spiritual state becomes sublime.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ, ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਵੱਸ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਉੱਚੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਫ਼ਰਾਖ਼-ਦਿਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ|
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਟੇ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਹੀਰ ॥
gurmat pargatay raam naam heer.
By following the Guru’s teachings, the jewel-like God’s Name becomes manifest in him.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਹੀਰਾ ਚਮਕ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ|
ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ਨਾਮਿ ਤਜਿ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ॥
liv laagee naam taj doojaa bhaa-o.
Renouncing love of duality, his mind remains focused on God.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਤਿਆਗ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸੁਰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਾਉ ॥੪॥੫॥
jan naanak har gur gur milaa-o. ||4||5||
Therefore, devotee Nanak prays: O’ God, please unite me with the Guru. ||4||5||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਮੇਰੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਮੈਨੂੰ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਕਰਾ ਦੇ ॥੪॥੫॥
ਬਸੰਤੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Raag Basant, First Guru:
ਮੇਰੀ ਸਖੀ ਸਹੇਲੀ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਭਾਇ ॥
mayree sakhee sahaylee sunhu bhaa-ay.
O’ my dear friends and companions, listen to me with loving attention,
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ (ਸਤ ਸੰਗਣ) ਸਹੇਲੀਹੋ! ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨਾਲ (ਮੇਰੀ ਗੱਲ) ਸੁਣੋ,
ਮੇਰਾ ਪਿਰੁ ਰੀਸਾਲੂ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਾਇ ॥
mayraa pir reesaaloo sang saa-ay.
She alone is a fortunate soul-bride, with whom dwells my handsome husband-God.
ਮੇਰਾ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਪਤੀ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜਿਸ ਸਹੇਲੀ ਦੇ ਅੰਗ-ਸੰਗ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਸਹੇਲੀ (ਸੁਹਾਗਣਿ) ਹੈ।
ਓਹੁ ਅਲਖੁ ਨ ਲਖੀਐ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਾਇ ॥
oh alakh na lakhee-ai kahhu kaa-ay.
He (God) is invisible; how can I describe Him?
ਉਹ ਅਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ। ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਰਣਨ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੀ ਹਾਂ?
