ਪਰ ਨਾਰੀ ਸਿਉ ਘਾਲੈ ਧੰਧਾ ॥
par naaree si-o ghaalai DhanDhaa.
and indulges in an illicit affair with another woman,
ਪਰਾਈ ਜ਼ਨਾਨੀ ਨਾਲ ਝਖਾਂ ਮਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਜੈਸੇ ਸਿੰਬਲੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਸੂਆ ਬਿਗਸਾਨਾ ॥
jaisay simbal daykh soo-aa bigsaanaa.
he is like the parrot who is pleased to see the simbal tree,
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਤੋਤਾ ਸਿੰਬਲ ਰੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਅੰਤ ਕੀ ਬਾਰ ਮੂਆ ਲਪਟਾਨਾ ॥੧॥
ant kee baar moo-aa laptaanaa. ||1||
but in the end dies clinging to it; similarly a person engrossed in illicit affairs, eventually suffers. ||1||
ਆਖ਼ਰ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਗ੍ਰਸਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੀ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਪਾਪੀ ਕਾ ਘਰੁ ਅਗਨੇ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
paapee kaa ghar agnay maahi.
The mind of a sinner keeps agonizing as if it is always on fire,
ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ਬੰਦੇ ਦਾ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਸਦਾ ਉਸ ਅੱਗ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਜਲਤ ਰਹੈ ਮਿਟਵੈ ਕਬ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jalat rahai mitvai kab naahi. ||1|| rahaa-o.
which keeps burning and never gets extinguished. ||1||Pause||
ਜੋ ਅੱਗ ਸਦਾ ਬਲਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਕਦੇ ਬੁੱਝਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਦੇਖੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
har kee bhagat na daykhai jaa-ay.
A sinner does not go to a place where worship of God is being performed,
ਜਿੱਥੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ (ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਉਹ ਥਾਂ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਵੇਖਦਾ,
ਮਾਰਗੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਅਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਇ ॥
maarag chhod amaarag paa-ay.
he abandons the righteous path and treads the wrong (sinful) way of life.
ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਸਿੱਧਾ ਰਾਹ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ) ਉਲਟੇ ਰਸਤੇ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਮੂਲਹੁ ਭੂਲਾ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
moolhu bhoolaa aavai jaa-ay.
He forgets God and is caught in the cycle of birth and death,
ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਮੂਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਡਾਰਿ ਲਾਦਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਇ ॥੨॥
amrit daar laad bikh khaa-ay. ||2||
because he throws away the ambrosial nectar of Naam and indulges in vices, the poison for spiritual life. ||2||
ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਡੋਲ੍ਹ ਕੇ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ) ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਲੱਦ ਕੇ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਜਿਉ ਬੇਸ੍ਵਾ ਕੇ ਪਰੈ ਅਖਾਰਾ ॥
ji-o baisvaa kay parai akhaaraa.
Just as one goes to a place where prostitutes perform dance,
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕੋਈ ਉਥੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਥੇ ਵੇਸਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੁਜਰੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਕਾਪਰੁ ਪਹਿਰਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਸੀਗਾਰਾ ॥
kaapar pahir karahi seeNgaaraa.
there, they wear beautiful clothes and adorn themselves with ornaments.
ਉਥੇ ਉਹ (ਸੁਹਣੀ ਸੁਹਣੀ) ਪੁਸ਼ਾਕ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
ਪੂਰੇ ਤਾਲ ਨਿਹਾਲੇ ਸਾਸ ॥
pooray taal nihaalay saas.
When the prostitute dances and synchronizes her breaths with the beats of the drums, the sinner is delighted seeing her breathe,
ਜਦ ਵੇਸਵਾ ਨੱਚਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਵਿਸ਼ਈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਹ ਲੈਦਿਆਂ ਵੇਖ ਬਹੁਤ ਖੁਸ਼ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ,
ਵਾ ਕੇ ਗਲੇ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਹੈ ਫਾਸ ॥੩॥
vaa kay galay jam kaa hai faas. ||3||
but does not realize that the noose of the demon of death is falling around his neck because of this type of illicit conduct. ||3||
(ਬੱਸ, ਇਸ ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ) ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਜਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਜਾ ਕੇ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲਿਖਿਓ ਕਰਮਾ ॥
jaa kay mastak likhi-o karmaa.
One who has been preordained with God’s grace,
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ (ਦਾ ਲੇਖ) ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ
ਸੋ ਭਜਿ ਪਰਿ ਹੈ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਰਨਾ ॥
so bhaj par hai gur kee sarnaa.
hurries to enter the Guru’s refuge.
ਉਹ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ) ਹਟ ਕੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਹਤ ਨਾਮਦੇਉ ਇਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
kahat naamday-o ih beechaar.
Namdev expresses this thought:
ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਇਹ ਇਕ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਦਾ ਬਚਨ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ :
ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਸੰਤਹੁ ਉਤਰਹੁ ਪਾਰਿ ॥੪॥੨॥੮॥
in biDh santahu utarahu paar. ||4||2||8||
O’ saints, (seek the Guru’s refuge and follow his teachings), this is the only way to cross this worldly ocean of vices. ||4||2||8||
ਹੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ! ਕੇਵਲ ਇਸ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ) ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਸਕੋਗੇ ॥੪॥੨॥੮॥
ਸੰਡਾ ਮਰਕਾ ਜਾਇ ਪੁਕਾਰੇ ॥
sandaa markaa jaa-ay pukaaray.
Sanda and Marka, teachers of Prahlad went and complained to Harnaakhash,
(ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦ ਦੇ ਦੋਵੇਂ ਉਸਤਾਦ) ਸੰਡ ਅਤੇ ਅਮਰਕ ਨੇ (ਹਰਨਾਖਸ਼ ਕੋਲ) ਜਾ ਕੇ ਫ਼ਰਿਆਦ ਕੀਤੀ-
ਪੜੈ ਨਹੀ ਹਮ ਹੀ ਪਚਿ ਹਾਰੇ ॥
parhai nahee ham hee pach haaray.
We are tired of trying to teach your son but he does not read his lessons.
ਅਸੀਂ ਖਪ ਲੱਥੇ ਹਾਂ, ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦ ਪੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਰਾਮੁ ਕਹੈ ਕਰ ਤਾਲ ਬਜਾਵੈ ਚਟੀਆ ਸਭੈ ਬਿਗਾਰੇ ॥੧॥
raam kahai kar taal bajaavai chatee-aa sabhai bigaaray. ||1||
He claps his hands to produce tunes and sings praises of God’s Name, he has also spoiled all the other students. ||1||
ਉਹ ਹੱਥਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਤਾਲ ਵਜਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਗਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਵਿੱਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਭੀ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਵਿਗਾੜ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਾ ਜਪਿਬੋ ਕਰੈ ॥
raam naamaa japibo karai.
Prahlad keeps uttering God’s Name,
(ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦ) ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਹਰਿ ਜੀ ਕੋ ਸਿਮਰਨੁ ਧਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
hirdai har jee ko simran Dharai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
and in his heart, he always remembers the reverend God. ||1||Pause||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਬਸੁਧਾ ਬਸਿ ਕੀਨੀ ਸਭ ਰਾਜੇ ਬਿਨਤੀ ਕਰੈ ਪਟਰਾਨੀ ॥
basuDhaa bas keenee sabh raajay bintee karai patraanee.
Prahalad’s mother, the chief queen, humbly told him that his father, the king Harnaakash has subjugated the entire world,
ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦ ਦੀ ਮਾਂ, ਵੱਡੀ ਰਾਣੀ ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦ ਅੱਗੇ ਤਰਲੇ ਨਾਲ ਸਮਝਾਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਤੇਰੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਰਾਜੇ ਨੇ ਸਾਰੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਵੱਸ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ,
ਪੂਤੁ ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦੁ ਕਹਿਆ ਨਹੀ ਮਾਨੈ ਤਿਨਿ ਤਉ ਅਉਰੈ ਠਾਨੀ ॥੨॥
poot par-hilaad kahi-aa nahee maanai tin ta-o a-urai thaanee. ||2||
But the son Prehlad does not listen to any one of her pleas, because he has decided something else. ||2||
ਪਰ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦ (ਮਾਂ ਦਾ) ਆਖਿਆ ਮੰਨਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਉਸ (ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦ) ਨੇ ਤਾਂ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਗੱਲ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪੱਕੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਦੁਸਟ ਸਭਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਮੰਤਰ ਉਪਾਇਆ ਕਰਸਹ ਅਉਧ ਘਨੇਰੀ ॥
dusat sabhaa mil mantar upaa-i-aa karsah a-oDh ghanayree.
The council of villains met and resolved to cut short his life.
ਦੁਸ਼ਟਾਂ ਦੀ ਜੁੰਡੀ ਨੇ ਰਲ ਕੇ ਸਲਾਹ ਕਰ ਲਈ- ਕਿ ਅਸੀਂ ਪ੍ਰਹਲਾਦ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਮੁਕਾਵਾਂਗੇ
ਗਿਰਿ ਤਰ ਜਲ ਜੁਆਲਾ ਭੈ ਰਾਖਿਓ ਰਾਜਾ ਰਾਮਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਫੇਰੀ ॥੩॥
gir tar jal ju-aalaa bhai raakhi-o raajaa raam maa-i-aa fayree. ||3||
God, the sovereign King, changed the nature of things and removed Prahalad’s fear of dying by throwing down a mountain, hanging from a tree, drowning in water and burning in fire. ||3||
ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦ ਦੀ ਖਾਤਰ, ਕੁਦਰਤ ਦੇ ਕਾਨੂੰਨ ਬਦਲ ਦਿਤੇ ਅਤੇ ਬਾਵਜੂਦ ਪਹਾੜ ਤੇ ਦਰਖਤੋ ਹੇਠਾਂ ਸੁਟਣ, ਪਾਣੀ ਤੇ ਅੱਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਾਣ ਅਤੇ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਦਿਤੇ ਜਾਣ ਦੇ, ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਰਖਿਆ ਕੀਤੀ॥੩॥
ਕਾਢਿ ਖੜਗੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਭੈ ਕੋਪਿਓ ਮੋਹਿ ਬਤਾਉ ਜੁ ਤੁਹਿ ਰਾਖੈ ॥
kaadh kharhag kaal bhai kopi-o mohi bataa-o jo tuhi raakhai.
Burning with rage, Harnakhash drew his sword and threatened Prahlad with the fear of death and yelled: Tell me, who can save you from this sword?
ਕ੍ਰੋਧਵਾਨ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਹਰਨਾਖਸ਼ ਨੇ ਆਪਦੀ ਤਲਵਾਰ ਖਿੱਚ ਲਈ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦ ਨੂੰ ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਦੀ ਧਮਕੀ ਦਿਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਗੱਜਿਆ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਦੱਸ (ਇਸ ਤਲਵਾਰ ਤੋਂ) ਜੋ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਕੌਣ ਬਚਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?
ਪੀਤ ਪੀਤਾਂਬਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਧਣੀ ਥੰਭ ਮਾਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਖੈ ॥੪॥
peet peetaaNbar taribhavan Dhanee thambh maahi har bhaakhai. ||4||
Prahlaad replied, God, the Master of the universe dressed in yellow robe, is present even in this piller to which I am tied. ||4||
ਪ੍ਰਹਲਾਦ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ ਪੀਲੇ ਕਪੜਿਆ ਵਾਲਾ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਭਵਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਇਸ ਥੰਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਮੈਂ ਬੰਨ੍ਹਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹਾਂ ॥੪॥
ਹਰਨਾਖਸੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਨਖਹ ਬਿਦਾਰਿਓ ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਕੀਏ ਸਨਾਥਾ ॥
harnaakhas jin nakhah bidaari-o sur nar kee-ay sanaathaa.
God (appeared in the form of man-lion and) tore apart the king Harnakash with His claws, and assured all the gods and the human beings that He is their Master and savior.
ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਹਰਨਾਖ਼ਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੁੰਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਚੀਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਤੇ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਢਾਰਸ ਦਿੱਤੀ,
ਕਹਿ ਨਾਮਦੇਉ ਹਮ ਨਰਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਵਹ ਰਾਮੁ ਅਭੈ ਪਦ ਦਾਤਾ ॥੫॥੩॥੯॥
kahi naamday-o ham narhar Dhi-aaveh raam abhai pad daataa. ||5||3||9||
Namdev says, I also lovingly remember that God who is the bestower of the state of fearlessness. ||5||3||9||
ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮੈਂ ਭੀ ਉਸੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ; ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹੀ ਨਿਰਭੈਤਾ ਦਾ ਦਰਜਾ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥੩॥੯॥
ਸੁਲਤਾਨੁ ਪੂਛੈ ਸੁਨੁ ਬੇ ਨਾਮਾ ॥
sultaan poochhai sun bay naamaa.
The Sultan (king) said: O’ Namdev, listen,
(ਮੁਹੰਮਦ-ਬਿਨ-ਤੁਗ਼ਲਕ) ਬਾਦਸ਼ਾਹ ਪੁੱਛਦਾ ਹੈ-ਹੇ ਨਾਮੇ! ਸੁਣ,
ਦੇਖਉ ਰਾਮ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਰੇ ਕਾਮਾ ॥੧॥
daykh-a-u raam tumHaaray kaamaa. ||1||
I Want to see the actions (power) of your God. ||1||
ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਵੇਖਣੇ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੧॥
ਨਾਮਾ ਸੁਲਤਾਨੇ ਬਾਧਿਲਾ ॥
naamaa sultaanay baaDhilaa.
The Sultan then got Namdev (me) tied down,
ਬਾਦਸ਼ਾਹ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਨਾਮੇ ਨੂੰ) ਬੰਨ੍ਹ ਲਿਆ,
ਦੇਖਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਬੀਠੁਲਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
daykh-a-u tayraa har beethulaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
and said, I want to see the powers of God whom you call Beethal. ||1||Pause||
(ਤੇ ਆਖਣ ਲੱਗਾ-) ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਹਰੀ, ਤੇਰਾ ਬੀਠਲੁ, ਵੇਖਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਬਿਸਮਿਲਿ ਗਊ ਦੇਹੁ ਜੀਵਾਇ ॥
bismil ga-oo dayh jeevaa-ay.
Bring this dead cow back to life,
ਇਹ ਮੋਈ ਹੋਈ ਗਾਂ ਜਿਵਾਲ ਦੇਹ,
ਨਾਤਰੁ ਗਰਦਨਿ ਮਾਰਉ ਠਾਂਇ ॥੨॥
naatar gardan maara-o thaaN-ay. ||2||
otherwise I will chop off your head, right now. ||2||
ਨਹੀਂ ਤਾਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਇੱਥੇ ਹੀ (ਹੁਣੇ ਹੀ) ਮਾਰ ਦਿਆਂਗਾ ॥੨॥
ਬਾਦਿਸਾਹ ਐਸੀ ਕਿਉ ਹੋਇ ॥
baadisaah aisee ki-o ho-ay.
Namdev answered, O king, how can this happen?
(ਮੈਂ ਆਖਿਆ-) ਬਾਦਸ਼ਾਹ! ਅਜਿਹੀ ਗੱਲ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ?
ਬਿਸਮਿਲਿ ਕੀਆ ਨ ਜੀਵੈ ਕੋਇ ॥੩॥
bismil kee-aa na jeevai ko-ay. ||3||
One which is dead, never becomes alive again. ||3||
ਕਦੇ ਕੋਈ ਮੋਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਮੁੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਜੀਵਿਆ ॥੩॥
ਮੇਰਾ ਕੀਆ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
mayraa kee-aa kachhoo na ho-ay.
Nothing happens by my doing,
ਮੇਰਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਕਰਿ ਹੈ ਰਾਮੁ ਹੋਇ ਹੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੪॥
kar hai raam ho-ay hai so-ay. ||4||
whatever God does, only that happens.||4||
ਉਹੀ ਕੁਝ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਬਾਦਿਸਾਹੁ ਚੜ੍ਹ੍ਹਿਓ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ ॥
baadisaahu charhHi-o ahaNkaar.
The king became mad with arrogance,
ਬਾਦਸ਼ਾਹ (ਇਹ ਉੱਤਰ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ) ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਆਇਆ,
ਗਜ ਹਸਤੀ ਦੀਨੋ ਚਮਕਾਰਿ ॥੫॥
gaj hastee deeno chamkaar. ||5||
He incited an elephant to attack (me) Namdev. ||5||
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਇਕ ਹਾਥੀ ਚਮਕਾ ਕੇ (ਮੇਰੇ ਉੱਤੇ) ਚਾੜ੍ਹ ਦਿੱਤਾ ॥੫॥
ਰੁਦਨੁ ਕਰੈ ਨਾਮੇ ਕੀ ਮਾਇ ॥
rudan karai naamay kee maa-ay.
The mother of Namdev started crying,
(ਮੇਰੀ) ਨਾਮੇ ਦੀ ਮਾਂ ਰੋਣ ਲੱਗ ਪਈ,
ਛੋਡਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਕੀ ਨ ਭਜਹਿ ਖੁਦਾਇ ॥੬॥
chhod raam kee na bhajeh khudaa-ay. ||6||
and said, O’ Namdev, why don’t you start uttering allah instead of Ram (abandon Hinduism, accept Islam and save your life)? ||6||
(ਤੇ ਆਖਣ ਲੱਗੀ-ਹੇ ਬੱਚਾ!) ਤੂੰ ਰਾਮ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਖ਼ੁਦਾ ਖ਼ੁਦਾ ਕਿਉਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਖਣ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਂਦਾ? ॥੬॥
ਨ ਹਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਪੂੰਗੜਾ ਨ ਤੂ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਇ ॥
na ha-o tayraa pooNgarhaa na too mayree maa-ay.
Namdev answered, neither am I your child, nor are you my mother;
(ਮੈਂ ਉੱਤਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ-) ਨਾ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਹਾਂ, ਨਾ ਤੂੰ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਂ ਹੈਂ;
ਪਿੰਡੁ ਪੜੈ ਤਉ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇ ॥੭॥
pind parhai ta-o har gun gaa-ay. ||7||
even if my body perishes, it will still keep singing praises of God. ||7||
ਜੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਭੀ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ, ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਨਾਮਾ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਰਹੇਗਾ ॥੭॥
ਕਰੈ ਗਜਿੰਦੁ ਸੁੰਡ ਕੀ ਚੋਟ ॥
karai gajind sund kee chot.
When the elephant would try to hit him with his trunk,
ਹਾਥੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਸੁੰਡ ਦੀ ਚੋਟ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਮਾ ਉਬਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਓਟ ॥੮॥
naamaa ubrai har kee ot. ||8||
Namdev was saved every time because he had the protection of God. ||8||
ਪਰ ਨਾਮਾ ਬਚ ਨਿਕਲਦਾ ਹੈ; ਨਾਮੇ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥
ਕਾਜੀ ਮੁਲਾਂ ਕਰਹਿ ਸਲਾਮੁ ॥
kaajee mulaaN karahi salaam.
The king thinks in his mind, while all the Muslim priests and judges salute me,
(ਬਾਦਸ਼ਾਹ ਸੋਚਦਾ ਹੈ-) ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਮੇਰੇ ਮਜ਼ਹਬ ਦੇ ਆਗੂ) ਕਾਜ਼ੀ ਤੇ ਮੌਲਵੀ ਤਾਂ ਸਲਾਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਇਨਿ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਲਿਆ ਮਾਨੁ ॥੯॥
in hindoo mayraa mali-aa maan. ||9||
but this Hindu has trampled my egotistic pride.||9||
ਪਰ ਇਸ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਨੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਾਣ ਤੋੜ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ॥੯॥
ਬਾਦਿਸਾਹ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਸੁਨੇਹੁ ॥
baadisaah bayntee sunayhu.
(The Hindu well-wishers of Namdev approached the king, and said to him): O’ king, please listen to our request,
(ਹਿੰਦੂ ਲੋਕ ਰਲ ਕੇ ਆਏ, ਤੇ ਆਖਣ ਲੱਗੇ,) ਹੇ ਬਾਦਸ਼ਾਹ! ਅਸਾਡੀ ਅਰਜ਼ ਸੁਣ,
