ਜਿਨ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਸੋਹੇ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਏ ॥੩॥
jin man vasi-aa say jan sohay hirdai naam vasaa-ay. ||3||
Those in whose mind God manifests, they live righteously by enshiring God’s Name in their heart. ||3||
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਵਸਾ ਕੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੩॥
ਘਰੁ ਦਰੁ ਮਹਲੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ਰੰਗ ਸਿਉ ਰਲੀਆ ਮਾਣੈ ॥
ghar dar mahal satguroo dikhaa-i-aa rang si-o ralee-aa maanai.
The person whom the true Guru has revealed God’s presence in his heart, rejoices in His love.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਘਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਦਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਮਹਲ ਵਿਖਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਹੈ ਸੁ ਭਲਾ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥੪॥੬॥੧੬॥
jo kichh kahai so bhalaa kar maanai naanak naam vakhaanai. ||4||6||16||
O’ Nanak, whatever the Guru’s divine word says, that person accepts it as good and keeps meditating on God’s Name. ||4||6||16||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰੂ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਭਲਾ ਜਾਣ ਕੇ ਮੰਨ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੬॥੧੬॥

Raag Bhairao, Third Guru:
ਮਨਸਾ ਮਨਹਿ ਸਮਾਇ ਲੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਵੀਚਾਰ ॥
mansaa maneh samaa-ay lai gur sabdee veechaar.
O’ brother, by reflecting on the Guru’s divine word, immerse the desires of your mind in the mind itself.
ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਾਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਖਾਹਿਸ਼ਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਦੇ ਮਨ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਲੀਨ ਕਰ ਲੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਤੇ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਵੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰ ॥੧॥
gur pooray tay sojhee pavai fir marai na vaaro vaar. ||1||
One who attains this understanding from the perfect Guru does not fall in the cycle of birth and death. ||1||
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਹਾਸਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ ॥੧॥
ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥
man mayray raam naam aaDhaar.
O’ my mind, one who makes God’s Name as the support of life,
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! (ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ)
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਭ ਇਛ ਪੁਜਾਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur parsaad param pad paa-i-aa sabh ichh pujaavanhaar. ||1|| rahaa-o.
by the Guru’s grace, he attains the supreme spiritual status; O’ my mind! God is capable of fulfilling all the wishes of the mind. ||1||Pause||
ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਉੱਚਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਦਰਜਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਮਨ!ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹਰੇਕ ਇੱਛਾ ਪੂਰੀ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਏਕੋ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥
sabh meh ayko rav rahi-aa gur bin boojh na paa-ay.
O’ my mind, God is pervading all, but without the teachings of the Guru, one does not understand it.
ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੀ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਟੁ ਹੋਆ ਮੇਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥੨॥
gurmukh pargat ho-aa mayraa har parabh an-din har gun gaa-ay. ||2||
By Guru’s grace, one in whose mind manifests my beloved God, he always sings His praises.||2||
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਪਰਗਟ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਹੋਰ ਥੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਹਿ ॥
sukh-daata har ayk hai hor thai sukh na paahi.
Only God is the bestower of comforts and bliss, and one cannot get those anywhere else.
ਸੁਖ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਹੈ (ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੈਂਦੇ) ਉਹ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਥਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸੁਖ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਨ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਦਾਤਾ ਸੇ ਅੰਤਿ ਗਏ ਪਛੁਤਾਹਿ ॥੩॥
satgur jinee na sayvi-aa daataa say ant ga-ay pachhutaahi. ||3||
Those who do not follow the teachings of the beneficent true Guru, depart regretfully in the end. ||3||
ਗੁਰੂ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ) ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਈ, ਉਹ ਆਖ਼ਰ ਇਥੋਂ ਜਾਣ ਵੇਲੇ ਹੱਥ ਮਲਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੩॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਫਿਰਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਧਾਇ ॥
satgur sayv sadaa sukh paa-i-aa fir dukh na laagai Dhaa-ay.
By following the true Guru’s teachings, the mortal attains lasting inner peace, and the worldly sorrows and pains do not afflict him any more.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲਿਆ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਸਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਿਆ। ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਦੁੱਖ ਹੱਲਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਚੰਬੜ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਈ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੪॥੭॥੧੭॥
naanak har bhagat paraapat ho-ee jotee jot samaa-ay. ||4||7||17||
O’ Nanak, one who receives the gift of devotional worship of God, his soul merges with the divine light.||4||7||17||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਗਈ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੭॥੧੭॥

Raag Bhairao, Third Guru:
ਬਾਝੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਜਗਤੁ ਬਉਰਾਨਾ ਭੂਲਾ ਚੋਟਾ ਖਾਈ ॥
baajh guroo jagat ba-uraanaa bhoolaa chotaa khaa-ee.
The entire world has gone crazy without following the Guru’s teachings, and people wander in delusion and keep bearing the blows of vices. ||4||7||17||
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜਗਤ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਝੱਲਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪੈ ਕੇ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ) ਸੱਟਾਂ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਮਰਿ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮੈ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ਦਰ ਕੀ ਖਬਰਿ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥੧॥
mar mar jammai sadaa dukh paa-ay dar kee khabar na paa-ee. ||1||
They are trapped in the cycle of birth and death, always endure misery and are completely unaware of God’s presence. ||1||
ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਦਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਸਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਦੀ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ ॥੧॥
ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਸਦਾ ਰਹਹੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਾ ॥
mayray man sadaa rahhu satgur kee sarnaa.
O’ my mind, always remain in the refuge of the true Guru and follow his teachings.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਸਦਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆ ਰਹੁ।
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਸਦ ਲਾਗਾ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੇ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਤਰਣਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
hirdai har naam meethaa sad laagaa gur sabday bhavjal tarnaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
God’s Name is always pleasing to the one who follows the Guru’s teachings; through the Guru’s word, he is carried across the terrifying world-ocean of vices. ||1||Pause||
(ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ) ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਦਾ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਭੇਖ ਕਰੈ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਚਿਤੁ ਡੋਲੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ॥
bhaykh karai bahut chit dolai antar kaam kroDh ahaNkaar.
O’ my friends, one who wears various holy garbs and performs rituals, his mind wavers a lot because it is filled with lust, anger, and ego.
ਹੇ ਮਨ! (ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ) ਕਈ (ਧਾਰਮਿਕ) ਭੇਖ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ) ਡੋਲਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਕਾਮ (ਦਾ ਜ਼ੋਰ) ਹੈ, ਕ੍ਰੋਧ (ਦਾ ਜ਼ੋਰ) ਹੈ, ਅਹੰਕਾਰ (ਦਾ ਜ਼ੋਰ) ਹੈ।
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤਿਸਾ ਭੂਖ ਅਤਿ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਭਉਕਤ ਫਿਰੈ ਦਰ ਬਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
antar tisaa bhookh at bahutee bha-ukat firai dar baar. ||2||
Deep within that person is an intense yearning for Maya, and (to fulfill that desire) he wanders from door to door barking like a dog. ||2||
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਬੜੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਹੈ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਬੜੀ ਭੁੱਖ ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਕੁੱਤੇ ਵਾਂਗ ਭੌਂਕਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ॥੨॥
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੀਵਹਿ ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦੁਆਰਿ ॥
gur kai sabad mareh fir jeeveh tin ka-o mukat du-aar.
Those who control their mind through the Guru’s divine word, they spiritually rejuvenate and find a way to attain freedom from vices.
ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ) ਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਫਿਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ)।
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੩॥
antar saaNt sadaa sukh hovai har raakhi-aa ur Dhaar. ||3||
They always have peace and tranquility deep within, because they have enshrined God’s Name in their hearts. ||3||
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਬਣੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਸਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਦੇ ਨਾਮ) ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਜਿਉ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਵੈ ਚਲਾਵੈ ਕਰਣਾ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
ji-o tis bhaavai tivai chalaavai karnaa kichhoo na jaa-ee.
As it pleases God, He makes us act accordingly in the journey of life and nothing can be done about this.
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਹ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਹ ਉਤੇ ਤੋਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਸਾਂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਕੋਈ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਚੱਲ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਲੇ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੪॥੮॥੧੮॥
naanak gurmukh sabad samHaalay raam naam vadi-aa-ee. ||4||8||18||
O’ Nanak, one who follows the Guru’s teachings and enshrines the Guru’s word in his mind, obtains honor by remembering God’s Name. ||4||8||18||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਨ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਦੀ) ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੮॥੧੮॥

ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਖੁਆਇਆ ਦੁਖੁ ਖਟੇ ਦੁਖ ਖਾਇ ॥
ha-umai maa-i-aa mohi khu-aa-i-aa dukh khatay dukh khaa-ay.
One who remains astrayed from the righteous path of life due to ego and love for Maya, he keeps doing things which cause him pain and sorrow.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਹ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਉਹੀ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਤੋਂ ਉਹ ਦੁੱਖ ਹੀ ਸਹੇੜਦਾ ਹੈ ਦੁੱਖ ਹੀ ਸਹਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲੋਭ ਹਲਕੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਭਾਰੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਬਿਬੇਕ ਭਰਮਾਇ ॥੧॥
antar lobh halak dukh bhaaree bin bibayk bharmaa-ay. ||1||
He suffers from the serious malady of greed and, like a mad dog, he wanders around without any discerning sense. ||1||
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੋਭ (ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕੁੱਤੇ ਨੂੰ) ਹਲਕ (ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ) ਹੈ (ਕੁੱਤਾ ਆਪ ਭੀ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਦੁਖੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਲੋਭੀ ਨੂੰ) ਬਹੁਤ ਦੁੱਖ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਚੰਗੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਦੀ ਪਰਖ ਨਾਹ ਕਰ ਸਕਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਹ ॥੧॥
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਸੈਸਾਰਿ ॥

Accursed is the life of a self-conceited person in this world,
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਜੀਵਨ-ਢੰਗ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਫਿਟਕਾਰਾਂ ਪੈਂਦੀਆਂ ਰਹਿੰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਨਹੀ ਚੇਤਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
raam naam supnai nahee chayti-aa har si-o kaday na laagai pi-aar. ||1|| rahaa-o.
because he has never remembered God’s Name even in his dreams, and has never been imbued with the love of God. ||1||Pause||
ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਯਾਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣਦਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਪਸੂਆ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੈ ਨਹੀ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਕੂੜੋ ਹੋਇ ॥
pasoo-aa karam karai nahee boojhai koorh kamaavai koorho ho-ay.
A self-conceited person behaves like an animal, and does not realize that practicing falsehood only brings false results.
ਮਨ ਦਾ ਮੁਰੀਦ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਸ਼ੂਆਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੀ (ਕਿ ਇਹ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਹ ਗ਼ਲਤ ਹੈ)। ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਦੌੜ-ਭੱਜ ਕਰਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਉਸੇ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੋਇਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਉਲਟੀ ਹੋਵੈ ਖੋਜਿ ਲਹੈ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਇ ॥੨॥
satgur milai ta ultee hovai khoj lahai jan ko-ay. ||2||
Only when one meets the true Guru and follows his teachings, his intellect turn away from the love of Maya; but only a rare person seeks and realizes God. ||2||
ਪਰ ਜੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ, ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸੁਰਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਲੋਂ ਪਰਤ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਫਿਰ ਉਹ) ਖੋਜ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਪਰ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ) ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਹੀ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਸਦ ਵਸਿਆ ਪਾਇਆ ਗੁਣੀ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ॥
har har naam ridai sad vasi-aa paa-i-aa gunee niDhaan
O’ my friends, one who always keeps God’s Name enshrined in his mind, he realizes God, the treasure of virtues.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਦਾ ਵੱਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਇਆ ਚੂਕਾ ਮਨ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥੩॥
gur parsaadee pooraa paa-i-aa chookaa man abhimaan. ||3||
By the Guru’s grace, he realizes God and the egotistical pride of his mind vanishes. ||3||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਦਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਏ ਆਪੇ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਏ ॥
aapay kartaa karay karaa-ay aapay maarag paa-ay.
The Creator Himself acts, and causes all to act; He Himself puts us on the righteous path of life.
(ਪਰ, ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦੇ ਭੀ ਕੀਹ ਵੱਸ?) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ) ਕਰਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਹ ਤੇ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ।
