ਆਪੇ ਸਚਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
aapay sachaa sabad milaa-ay.
On His own, the eternal God unites a person to the Guru’s divine word.
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ) ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਬਦੇ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਏ ॥
sabday vichahu bharam chukaa-ay.
and drives out that person’s doubt from within his mind through the divine word.
ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ (ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਨਾਮੇ ਹੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੬॥੮॥੨੨॥
naanak naam milai vadi-aa-ee naamay hee sukh paa-idaa. ||16||8||22||
O’ Nanak, one receives glory through Naam; inner peace is also enjoyed by remembering God’s Name with loving devotion. ||16||8||22||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ, ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਸੁਖੁ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੬॥੮॥੨੨॥

Raag Maaroo, Third Guru:
ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੇ ॥
agam agochar vayparvaahay.
O’ the inaccessible, incomprehensible, and carefree God!
ਹੇ ਅਪਹੁੰਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਹੇ ਗਿਆਨ-ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਹੇ ਬੇ-ਮੁਥਾਜ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!
ਆਪੇ ਮਿਹਰਵਾਨ ਅਗਮ ਅਥਾਹੇ ॥
aapay miharvaan agam athaahay.
You Yourself are merciful, inaccessible, and unfathomable.
ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮਿਹਰਵਾਨ ਹੈ, ਅਪਹੁੰਚ ਅਤੇ ਡੂੰਘੇ ਜਿਗਰੇ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।
ਅਪੜਿ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਮੇਲਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
aparh ko-ay na sakai tis no gur sabdee maylaa-i-aa. ||1||
No one can reach up to that person’s virtues, whom You have united with Yourself through the Guru’s word. ||1||
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਬਰਾਬਰੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੧॥
ਤੁਧੁਨੋ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵਹਿ ॥
tuDhuno sayveh jo tuDh bhaaveh.
O’ God, they alone lovingly remember You, who are pleasing to You.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਹੜੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦੇ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਵਹਿ ॥
gur kai sabday sach samaaveh.
They remain absorbed in Your eternal Name through the Guru’s divine word.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਤੇਰੇ) ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਗੁਣ ਰਵਹਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਰਸਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਭਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
an-din gun raveh din raatee rasnaa har ras bhaa-i-aa. ||2||
They always keep singing God’s praises; their tongue relishes the elixir of God’s Name. ||2||
ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਉਹ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਜੀਭ ਨੂੰ ਹਰੀ-ਰਸ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਸੇ ਮਰਣੁ ਸਵਾਰਹਿ ॥
sabad mareh say maran savaareh.
Those who so completely dispel their ego, as if they have died to the worldly desires through the Guru’s word, embellish their death.
ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਵਲੋਂ ਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਇਹ ਮੌਤਨੂੰ ਚਾਰ ਚੰਨ ਲਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ l
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਹਿ ॥
har kay gun hirdai ur Dhaareh.
They enshrine God’s virtues in their hearts.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਟਿਕਾਈ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਜਨਮੁ ਸਫਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਣੀ ਲਾਗੇ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
janam safal har charnee laagay doojaa bhaa-o chukaa-i-aa. ||3||
Being focused on God’s immaculate Name, they get rid of their love for duality (materialism) and their life becomes successful. ||3||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਕਾਮਯਾਬ ਬਣਾ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਮੁਕਾ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੩॥
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਮੇਲੇ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
har jee-o maylay aap milaa-ay.
God Himself unites those persons with Himself,
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦੇ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥
gur kai sabday aap gavaa-ay.
who eradicate their self-conceit through the Guru’s divine word.
ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤੀ ਰਾਤੇ ਇਸੁ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੪॥
an-din sadaa har bhagtee raatay is jag meh laahaa paa-i-aa. ||4||
Those who remain imbued with the devotional worship of God, attain the true profit (of remembering God) in this world.||4||
ਜੋ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਇਸ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ (ਭਗਤੀ ਦਾ) ਲਾਭ ਖੱਟਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੪॥
ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਕਹਾ ਮੈ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
tayray gun kahaa mai kahan na jaa-ee.
O’ God, I wish to utter Your virtues, but I cannot describe these,
Uਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਮੇਰਾ ਜੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਕਥਨ ਕਰਾਂ, ਪਰ ਮੈਥੋਂ ਬਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੇ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੇ।
ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਰਾ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਈ ॥
ant na paaraa keemat nahee paa-ee.
because there is no limit to Your virtues and their worth cannot be estimated
ਕਿਉਂਕੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਅੰਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈ ਸਕਦਾ, ਪਾਰਲਾ ਬੰਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭ ਸਕਦਾ, ਮੁੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਆਪੇ ਦਇਆ ਕਰੇ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਗੁਣ ਮਹਿ ਗੁਣੀ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੫॥
aapay da-i-aa karay sukh-daata gun meh gunee samaa-i-aa. ||5||
When on His own, the bliss giving God bestows mercy, then the person who sings God’s praises gets absorbed in His virtues. ||5||
ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜਦੋਂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਇਸੁ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਮੋਹੁ ਹੈ ਪਾਸਾਰਾ ॥
is jag meh moh hai paasaaraa.
In this world, emotional attachment is spread all over.
ਇਸ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ (ਹਰ ਪਾਸੇ) ਮੋਹ ਪਸਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਅੰਧੁ ਅੰਧਾਰਾ ॥
manmukh agi-aanee anDh anDhaaraa.
The self-willed person is spiritually ignorant and remains totally blind in the love for materialism.
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ) ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਧੰਧੈ ਧਾਵਤੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੬॥
DhanDhai Dhaavat janam gavaa-i-aa bin naavai dukh paa-i-aa. ||6||
Chasing after worldly affairs, he wastes away his life in vain and endures misery without remembering God’s Name. ||6||
(ਮੋਹ ਦੇ) ਧੰਧੇ ਵਿਚ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਭਟਕਦਾ (ਮਨੁੱਖਾ) ਜਨਮ ਜਾਇਆ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਕਰਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਤਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
karam hovai taa satgur paa-ay.
When God bestows grace on a person, only then he meets the true Guru,
(ਜਦੋਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਤੇ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥
ha-umai mail sabad jalaa-ay.
and he burns down the dirt of ego through the Guru’s word.
ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਹਉਮੈ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਸਾੜਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਅੰਧੇਰੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥੭॥
man nirmal gi-aan ratan chaanan agi-aan anDhayr gavaa-i-aa. ||7||
Then his mind becomes immaculate, jewel-like divine wisdom enlightens his life and he gets rid of the darkness of spiritual ignorance.||7||
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗਿਆਨ ਰਤਨ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਚਾਨਣ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਹ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਅਗਿਆਨ-ਹਨੇਰਾ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਅਨੇਕ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਈ ॥
tayray naam anayk keemat nahee paa-ee.
O’ God! based on Your virtues, You have numerous Names; the worth of Your virtues cannot be estimated,
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਆਧਾਰ ਤੇ) ਤੇਰੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ ਨਾਮ ਹਨ, ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਵਸਾਈ ॥
sach naam har hirdai vasaa-ee.
(if You bestow mercy, then) I enshrine Your eternal Name within my heart.
(ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰੇਂ, ਤਾਂ) ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਵਾਂ।
ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਉਣੁ ਕਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਤੂ ਆਪੇ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੮॥
keemat ka-un karay parabh tayree too aapay sahj samaa-i-aa. ||8||
O’ God, who can assess Your worth? You Yourself are absorbed in a state of spiritual peace and poise. ||8||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਕੌਣ ਤੇਰਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ? ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਅਨੰਦ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੀਨ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈਂ। ॥੮॥
ਨਾਮੁ ਅਮੋਲਕੁ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
naam amolak agam apaaraa.
The Name of the inaccessible and infinite God is priceless,
ਅਪਹੁੰਚ ਤੇ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਅਣਮੁੱਲਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਾ ਕੋ ਹੋਆ ਤੋਲਣਹਾਰਾ ॥
naa ko ho-aa tolanhaaraa.
nobody has been able to estimate the worth of it.
ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਜੀਵ (ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ) ਮੁੱਲ ਪਾਣ-ਜੋਗਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਿਆ।
ਆਪੇ ਤੋਲੇ ਤੋਲਿ ਤੋਲਾਏ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਮੇਲਿ ਤੋਲਾਇਆ ॥੯॥
aapay tolay tol tolaa-ay gur sabdee mayl tolaa-i-aa. ||9||
God Himself knows the worth of His Name and makes others realize it’s value; He makes people realize its worth by uniting them Himself through the Guru’s word.||9||
ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਕਦਰ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ। ਆਪ ਕਦਰ ਜਾਣ ਕੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਦਰ ਕਰਨੀ ਸਿਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ) ਮੇਲ ਕੇ ਕਦਰ ਸਿਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੯॥
ਸੇਵਕ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥
sayvak sayveh karahi ardaas.
O’ God, Your devotees perform Your devotional worship and pray before You.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰੇ ਭਗਤ ਤੇਰੀ ਸੇਵਾ-ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ) ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਤੂ ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਬਹਾਲਹਿ ਪਾਸਿ ॥
too aapay mayl bahaaleh paas.
You Yourself unite them with Your Name and keep them in Your presence.
ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ) ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਾਸ ਬਿਠਾਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ।
ਸਭਨਾ ਜੀਆ ਕਾ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਪੂਰੈ ਕਰਮਿ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥੧੦॥
sabhnaa jee-aa kaa sukh-daata poorai karam Dhi-aa-i-aa. ||10||
You are the giver of inner peace to all; Your devotees lovingly remember You only through Your perfect grace. ||10||
ਤੂੰ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਖ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ। ਤੇਰੀ ਪੂਰੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਨਾਲ (ਹੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਸੇਵਕ) ਤੇਰਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧੦॥
ਜਤੁ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਜਿ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥
jat sat sanjam je sach kamaavai.
One who earns the wealth of God’s Name (lovingly remembers God), receives the merits of celibacy, truthful living and self-discipline.
ਜੇਕਰ ਬੰਦਾ ਸੱਚ ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ; ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਚਰਜ, ਪ੍ਰਹੇਜ਼ਗਾਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਸਵੈ-ਜ਼ਬਤ ਆ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਜਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ॥
ih man nirmal je har gun gaavai.
One who sings praises of God, his mind becomes immaculate.
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਇਸੁ ਬਿਖੁ ਮਹਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਇਆ ॥੧੧॥
is bikh meh amrit paraapat hovai har jee-o mayray bhaa-i-aa. ||11||
Even while living in the midst of Maya, the poison for spiritual life, he receives the ambrosial nectar of Naam; this tradition is pleasing to my God.||11||
ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਲਿਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਇਸ ਮਾਇਆ-ਜ਼ਹਰ ਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਰਤਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਜਲ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਇਹੀ ਮਰਯਾਦਾ ਭਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧੧॥
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਸੋਈ ਬੂਝੈ ॥
jis no bujhaa-ay so-ee boojhai.
That person alone understands the righteous living, whom God Himself inspires to understand.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸਮਝ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਅੰਦਰੁ ਸੂਝੈ ॥
har gun gaavai andar soojhai.
As one sings praises of God, his mind keeps acquiring divine wisdom.
(ਜਿਉਂ ਜਿਉਂ) ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਹਿਰਦਾ ਸੂਝ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਉਮੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਏ ਸਹਜੇ ਹੀ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੨॥
ha-umai mayraa thaak rahaa-ay sehjay hee sach paa-i-aa. ||12||
He Keeps his ego and selfishness in control and intuitively realizes the eternal God.||12||
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਉਮੈ ਅਤੇ ਮਮਤਾ ਨੂੰ (ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਪਾਣ ਤੋਂ) ਰੋਕ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ। ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੨॥
ਬਿਨੁ ਕਰਮਾ ਹੋਰ ਫਿਰੈ ਘਨੇਰੀ ॥
bin karmaa hor firai ghanayree.
without God’s grace, much of the world is wandering aimlessly.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝੀ ਹੋਈ) ਹੋਰ ਬਥੇਰੀ ਲੁਕਾਈ ਭਟਕਦੀ ਫਿਰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਮਰਿ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮੈ ਚੁਕੈ ਨ ਫੇਰੀ ॥
mar mar jammai chukai na fayree.
They die and are born again and again, and this circle never ends.
ਉਹ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਈ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਗੇੜ ਮੁੱਕਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਬਿਖੁ ਕਾ ਰਾਤਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਕਬਹੂ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੩॥
bikh kaa raataa bikh kamaavai sukh na kabhoo paa-i-aa. ||13||
One who remains engrossed in the love for materialism, keeps amassing more poison for spiritual life and never attains inner peace.||13||
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਲਿਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਮਾਇਆ-ਜ਼ਹਰ ਦਾ ਲੱਟੂ ਹੋਇਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਇਹ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਹੀ ਵਿਹਾਝਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਕਦੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਾਣ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੧੩॥
ਬਹੁਤੇ ਭੇਖ ਕਰੇ ਭੇਖਧਾਰੀ ॥
bahutay bhaykh karay bhaykh-Dhaaree.
One who believes only in wearing holy garbs, adorn many such garbs,
ਭੋਖੀ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਧਾਰਮਕ ਪਹਿਰਾਵੇ ਪਹਿਨਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਮਾਰੀ ॥
bin sabdai ha-umai kinai na maaree.
but without following the Guru’s word, no one has ever eradicated his ego.
ਪਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਿਆ।
ਜੀਵਤੁ ਮਰੈ ਤਾ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਾਏ ਸਚੈ ਨਾਇ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੧੪॥
jeevat marai taa mukat paa-ay sachai naa-ay samaa-i-aa. ||14||
One who remains unaffected by the worldly allurements while still living amongst them, is liberated from vices and merges in the eternal God’s Name. ||14||
ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦਾ ਕਾਰ-ਵਿਹਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੀ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਛੱਡਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੪॥
ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਇਸੁ ਤਨਹਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥
agi-aan tarisnaa is taneh jalaa-ay.
Spiritual ignorance makes a person endure such misery as if the love for worldly desires is burning this body from within.
ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ (ਇਸ ਨੂੰ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ (ਕਹਿ ਲਵੋ, ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ (ਅੰਦਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਸਾੜਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
