ਆਪਹੁ ਹੋਆ ਨਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਹੋਸੀ ॥
aaphu ho-aa naa kichh hosee.
By one’s own effort, neither anything has been done, nor would be done.
ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਉੱਦਮ ਨਾਲ ਨਾਹ ਹੁਣ ਤਕ ਕੁਝ ਹੋ ਸਕਿਆ ਹੈ ਨਾਹ ਹੀ ਅਗਾਂਹ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਝ ਹੋ ਸਕੇਗਾ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦਰਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੩॥
naanak naam milai vadi-aa-ee dar saachai pat paa-ee hay. ||16||3||
O’ Nanak, one who is blessed with the glory of God’s Name, receives honor in the presence of eternal God . ||16||3||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਮ-ਰੂਪੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਮਿਲੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਆਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੬॥੩॥
ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥

Raag Maaroo, Third Guru:
ਜੋ ਆਇਆ ਸੋ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਜਾਸੀ ॥
jo aa-i-aa so sabh ko jaasee.
Whosoever has come into this world, they all would sure depart from here;
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਭੀ ਜੀਵ (ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਨਿਸਚਿਤ ਹੀ ਚਲੇ ਜਾਣਗੇ;
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਬਾਧਾ ਜਮ ਫਾਸੀ ॥
doojai bhaa-ay baaDhaa jam faasee.
because of the love for duality, one departs caught by the noose of the demon of death.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਜੀਵ ਜਮ ਦੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਝਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਉਬਰੇ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧॥
satgur raakhay say jan ubray saachay saach samaa-ee hay. ||1||
But those who have been saved by the true Guru, rise above the love for materialism and always remain absorbed in the eternal God. ||1||
(ਪਰ) ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕੀਤੀ, ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ ਬਚ ਨਿਕਲਦੇ ਹਨ; ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ॥
aapay kartaa kar kar vaykhai.
The Creator Himself creates the creation and watches over it.
(ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਖੇਲ) ਕਰਤਾਰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਕਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਵੇਖ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ;
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੋਈ ਜਨੁ ਲੇਖੈ ॥
jis no nadar karay so-ee jan laykhai.
One upon whom God bestows His gracious glance is approved in His presence.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉੱਤੇ ਉਹ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਪਰਵਾਨਗੀ ਵਿਚ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੂਝੈ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਅੰਧੁ ਕਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
gurmukh gi-aan tis sabh kichh soojhai agi-aanee anDh kamaa-ee hay. ||2||
One who receives spiritual wisdom through the Guru, understands all about righteous living; the spiritually ignorant person practices falsehood. ||2||
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਬਾਰੇ) ਹਰੇਕ ਗੱਲ ਦੀ ਸਮਝ ਆ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਗਿਆਨ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਿਆਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਕੰਮ ਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਸਹਸਾ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥
manmukh sahsaa boojh na paa-ee.
The self-willed person always keeps suffering from some dread, because he does not have any understanding about righteous living.
ਮਨ ਦੇ ਮੁਰੀਦ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ (ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਕੋਈ ਨ ਕੋਈ) ਸਹਮ (ਖਾਈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ।
ਮਰਿ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮੈ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਈ ॥
mar mar jammai janam gavaa-ee.
Wasting human life in vain, such a person keeps going through the cycle of birth and death.
ਉਹ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣਾ (ਮਨੁੱਖਾ) ਜਨਮ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਗਵਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਹਜੇ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
gurmukh naam ratay sukh paa-i-aa sehjay saach samaa-ee hay. ||3||
Being imbued with the love of God’s Name, the Guru’s followers attain inner peace and intuitively merge in the eternal God. ||3||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੩॥
ਧੰਧੈ ਧਾਵਤ ਮਨੁ ਭਇਆ ਮਨੂਰਾ ॥
DhanDhai Dhaavat man bha-i-aa manooraa.
Chasing after worldly affairs, the human mind becomes like rusted iron,
ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਵਿਹਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਦੌੜ-ਭੱਜ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਸੜੇ ਹੋਏ ਲੋਹੇ ਵਾਂਗ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਫਿਰਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਕੰਚਨੁ ਭੇਟੈ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ॥
fir hovai kanchan bhaytai gur pooraa.
but it again becomes like pure gold when one meets and follows the teachings of the perfect Guru.
ਪਰ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਮੁੜ (ਸੁੱਧ) ਸੋਨਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸਿ ਲਏ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ਪੂਰੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੪॥
aapay bakhas la-ay sukh paa-ay poorai sabad milaa-ee hay. ||4||
When God Himself grants forgiveness, one attains inner peace and unites with Him through the divine word of the perfect Guru. ||4||
ਜਦ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਫ਼ ਕਰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪੂਰਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਰਾਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਝੂਠੀ ਬੁਰੀ ਬੁਰਿਆਰਿ ॥
durmat jhoothee buree buri-aar.
The soul-bride who follows her evil intellect is false and most wicked.
ਖੋਟੀ ਮੱਤ ਵਾਲੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਝੂਠ ਵਿਚ ਭੈੜ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਭੈੜ ਦਾ ਅੱਡਾ ਬਣੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਅਉਗਣਿਆਰੀ ਅਉਗਣਿਆਰਿ ॥
a-ugani-aaree a-ugani-aar.
She remains unworthy and filled with evil intellect.
ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਔਗੁਣਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਭਰੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਕਚੀ ਮਤਿ ਫੀਕਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਬੋਲੈ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੫॥
kachee mat feekaa mukh bolai durmat naam na paa-ee hay. ||5||
Impure is her intellect and she utters harsh words from her mouth and because of her evil intellect, she does not realize God. ||5||
ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਸਦਾ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਥਿੜਕਦੀ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਮੂੰਹੋਂ ਖਰ੍ਹਵਾ ਬੋਲਦੀ ਹੈ, ਖੋਟੀ ਮੱਤ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਸੀਬ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ॥੫॥
ਅਉਗਣਿਆਰੀ ਕੰਤ ਨ ਭਾਵੈ ॥
a-ugani-aaree kant na bhaavai.
Such an unvirtuous soul-bride is not pleasing to her Husband-God.
ਔਗੁਣਾਂ-ਭਰੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦੀ,
ਮਨ ਕੀ ਜੂਠੀ ਜੂਠੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥
man kee joothee jooth kamaavai.
Being of false mind, she always practices falsehood (evil deeds).
ਮਨ ਦੀ ਗੰਦੀ ਉਹ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਸਦਾ ਗੰਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਹੀ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਪਿਰ ਕਾ ਸਾਉ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਮੂਰਖਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੬॥
pir kaa saa-o na jaanai moorakh bin gur boojh na paa-ee hay. ||6||
The foolish soul-bride does not know the bliss of union with Husband-God; she does not understand righteous living without the Guru’s teachings. ||6||
ਉਹ ਮੂਰਖ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਪਤੀ-ਰੂਪ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦੀ। ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ ॥੬॥
ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਖੋਟੀ ਖੋਟੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥
durmat khotee khot kamaavai.
The evil-minded, wicked soul-bride always practices wickedness.
ਖੋਟੀ ਮੱਤ ਵਾਲੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਸਦਾ ਖੋਟ ਨਾਲ ਭਰੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਸਦਾ ਖੋਟ ਕਮਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਖੋਟਾ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ)।
ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ਕਰੇ ਪਿਰ ਖਸਮ ਨ ਭਾਵੈ ॥
seegaar karay pir khasam na bhaavai.
She decorates herself outwardly, but is not pleasing to the Master-God.
ਉਹ ਬਾਹਰੋਂ (ਧਾਰਮਿਕ) ਸਜਾਵਟ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਪਸੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੀ।
ਗੁਣਵੰਤੀ ਸਦਾ ਪਿਰੁ ਰਾਵੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੭॥
gunvantee sadaa pir raavai satgur mayl milaa-ee hay. ||7||
The virtuous soul-bride always enjoys the company of her Husband-God; by uniting her with the true Guru, God unites her with Himself. ||7||
ਗੁਣਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਦਾ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਾ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਆਪੇ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਕਰੇ ਸਭੁ ਵੇਖੈ ॥
aapay hukam karay sabh vaykhai.
God Himself issues His commands and watches the deeds of all beings.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹੁਕਮ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਹਰੇਕ ਕੰਮ) ਵੇਖ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਇਕਨਾ ਬਖਸਿ ਲਏ ਧੁਰਿ ਲੇਖੈ ॥
iknaa bakhas la-ay Dhur laykhai.
God forgives the account of deeds of many people in accordance with His command (according to their preordained destiny).
ਧੁਰੋਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਕਈ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਲੇਖੇ ਵਿਚ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
an-din naam ratay sach paa-i-aa aapay mayl milaa-ee hay. ||8||
By always remaining imbued with God’s Name, they have realized Him; God keeps them united with Him by uniting them with the Guru. ||8||
ਉਹ ਜੀਵ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਪਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ. ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਲ) ਮਿਲਾ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥
ਹਉਮੈ ਧਾਤੁ ਮੋਹ ਰਸਿ ਲਾਈ ॥
ha-umai Dhaat moh ras laa-ee.
Egotism keeps a person attached to the love for materialism and worldly love.
ਹਉਮੈ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਰਸ ਵਿਚ ਲਾਈ ਰੱਖਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲਿਵ ਸਾਚੀ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥
gurmukh liv saachee sahj samaa-ee.
The true love for God keeps a Guru’s follower immersed in spiritual poise.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸੱਚੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਈ ਰੱਖਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲੈ ਆਪੇ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੯॥
aapay maylai aapay kar vaykhai bin satgur boojh na paa-ee hay. ||9||
God Himself unites one with Him, He Himself creates and watches the worldly play; the understanding about all this is not attained without the true Guru. ||9||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਖੇਲ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਵੇਖ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ-ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ ॥੯॥
ਇਕਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ਸਦਾ ਜਨ ਜਾਗੇ ॥
ik sabad veechaar sadaa jan jaagay.
There are many people who always remain alert to the onslaught of Maya by reflecting on the Guru’s divine word.
ਕਈ ਐਸੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਨ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਹੱਲਿਆਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ) ਸੁਚੇਤ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਇਕਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਸੋਇ ਰਹੇ ਅਭਾਗੇ ॥
ik maa-i-aa mohi so-ay rahay abhaagay.
There are many unfortunate ones who remain unaware in the love for Maya.
ਕਈ ਐਸੇ ਮੰਦ-ਭਾਗੀ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਸਦਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਗ਼ਾਫ਼ਿਲ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਆਪੇ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਏ ਆਪੇ ਹੋਰੁ ਕਰਣਾ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥
aapay karay karaa-ay aapay hor karnaa kichhoo na jaa-ee hay. ||10||
God Himself does and gets everything done, and nothing else can be done (against His will). ||10||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ) ਕਰਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਦੇ ਵਿਰੁੱਧ) ਹੋਰ ਕੁਝ ਭੀ ਕੀਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੧੦॥
ਕਾਲੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ॥
kaal maar gur sabad nivaaray.
One who conquers the fear of death by reflecting on the Guru’s word, eradicates his egotism,
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ) ਦੂਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਖੈ ਉਰ ਧਾਰੇ ॥
har kaa naam rakhai ur Dhaaray.
and keeps God’s Name enshrined in his heart.
ਅਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥
satgur sayvaa tay sukh paa-i-aa har kai naam samaa-ee hay. ||11||
He receives inner peace by following the true Guru’s teachings and remains absorbed in God’s Name. ||11||
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੧॥
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਫਿਰੈ ਦੇਵਾਨੀ ॥
doojai bhaa-ay firai dayvaanee.
The entire world wanders around insanely in the love of duality,
ਹੋਰਸ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਕਾਰਨ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਕਮਲੀ ਹੋਈ ਫਿਰਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਦੁਖ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਨੀ ॥
maa-i-aa mohi dukh maahi samaanee.
It remains engrossed in sorrows because of the love for materialism.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਕਾਰਣ ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਗ੍ਰਸੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਬਹੁਤੇ ਭੇਖ ਕਰੈ ਨਹ ਪਾਏ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥
bahutay bhaykh karai nah paa-ay bin satgur sukh na paa-ee hay. ||12||
God is not realized by wearing all sorts of religious robes, and inner peace in not attained without following the teachings of the true Guru. ||12||
ਬਹੁਤੇ ਭੇਸ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦੀ ॥੧੨॥
ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਕਹੀਐ ਜਾ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਏ ॥
kis no kahee-ai jaa aap karaa-ay.
When God Himself is getting everything done, then to whom can one complain?
ਜਦੋਂ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ) ਆਪ (ਹੀ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ) ਕਰਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਪਾਸ ਪੁਕਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਜਿਤੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਤੁ ਰਾਹਿ ਚਲਾਏ ॥
jit bhaavai tit raahi chalaa-ay.
Creatures do what God wishes them to do.
ਜਿਸ ਰਾਹ ਉਤੇ ਤੋਰਨਾ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਰਾਹ ਉੱਤੇ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਤੋਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ ਮਿਹਰਵਾਨੁ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਵੈ ਚਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥
aapay miharvaan sukh-daata ji-o bhaavai tivai chalaa-ee hay. ||13||
God Himself is the merciful giver of inner peace; He runs the affairs of the universe as it pleases Him. ||13||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਖੁਦ ਮਿਹਰਬਾਨ ਅਤੇ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਦਾਤਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਿ੍ਸਟੀ ਨੂੰ ਚਲਾਈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੩॥
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਆਪੇ ਭੁਗਤਾ ॥
aapay kartaa aapay bhugtaa.
God Himself is the Creator and He Himself is the enjoyer.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਭੋਗਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਆਪੇ ਜੁਗਤਾ ॥
aapay sanjam aapay jugtaa.
God Himself observes self discipline and He is pervading in all beings and things.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਭੋਗਣ ਵੱਲੋਂ) ਪਰਹੇਜ਼ (ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ), ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਤੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਮਿਹਰਵਾਨੁ ਮਧੁਸੂਦਨੁ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਮੇਟਿਆ ਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥
aapay nirmal miharvaan maDhusoodan jis daa hukam na mayti-aa jaa-ee hay. ||14||
God Himself is immaculate, merciful and the slayer of the sinners; His command cannot be disobeyed. ||14||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ ਵਿਕਾਰੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, (ਉਹ ਐਸਾ ਹੈ) ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਮੋੜਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੧੪॥
ਸੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਜਿਨੀ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਤਾ ॥
say vadbhaagee jinee ayko jaataa.
Very fortunate are those who have realized God,
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਇੱਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਹੈ,
