ਚਾਰਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਲੈ ਜਗਿ ਆਇਆ ॥
chaar padaarath lai jag aa-i-aa.
One came into the world to achieve four objectives (Dharma-righteousness, Artha-financial security, Kama-family life and Moksha-salvation);
ਚਾਰ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਆਦਰਸ਼ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਜੀਵ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ,
ਸਿਵ ਸਕਤੀ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
siv saktee ghar vaasaa paa-i-aa.
but he got obsessed with materialism, as if he has set up abode in a power-house created by God called Maya.
(ਪਰ ਇਥੇ ਆ ਕੇ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਚੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਬਣਾ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੈ।
ਏਕੁ ਵਿਸਾਰੇ ਤਾ ਪਿੜ ਹਾਰੇ ਅੰਧੁਲੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੬॥
ayk visaaray taa pirh haaray anDhulai naam visaaraa hay. ||6||
Blinded by the love for materialism, he has forgotten God; he does not realize that one who forsakes God, loses the game of human life. ||6||
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ ਜੀਵ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ। ਜੇਹੜਾ ਜੀਵ ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਦੀ ਬਾਜ਼ੀ ਹਾਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਬਾਲਕੁ ਮਰੈ ਬਾਲਕ ਕੀ ਲੀਲਾ ॥
baalak marai baalak kee leelaa.
If someone dies as a child, the relatives remember his childish plays,
ਜਦੋਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਬਾਲਕ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ (ਮਾਂ ਪਿਉ ਭੈਣ ਭਰਾ ਸੰਬੰਧੀ) ਉਸ ਬਾਲਕ ਦੀਆਂ ਪਿਆਰ-ਭਰੀਆਂ ਖੇਡਾਂ ਚੇਤੇ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਕਹਿ ਕਹਿ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਬਾਲੁ ਰੰਗੀਲਾ ॥
kahi kahi roveh baal rangeelaa.
and cry and mourn saying that he was such a happy and playful child.
ਤੇ ਇਹ ਆਖ ਆਖ ਕੇ ਰੋਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਬਾਲਕ ਬੜਾ ਹਸ-ਮੁਖਾ ਸੀ।
ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਸਾ ਸੋ ਤਿਨ ਹੀ ਲੀਆ ਭੂਲਾ ਰੋਵਣਹਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੭॥
jis kaa saa so tin hee lee-aa bhoolaa rovanhaaraa hay. ||7||
God, whom the child belonged to, has taken him back; one who mourns because of the emotional bonds goes astray from the righteous path of life. ||7||
ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਉਹ ਬਾਲਕ ਸੀ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਉਹ ਵਾਪਸ ਲੈ ਲਿਆ, ਰੋਣ ਵਾਲਾ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ) ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਹ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਭਰਿ ਜੋਬਨਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਕਿ ਕੀਜੈ ॥
bhar joban mar jaahi ke keejai.
If one dies in the prime of youth, what can be done even then?
ਜਦੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਭਰ-ਜਵਾਨੀ ਵੇਲੇ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤਦੋਂ ਭੀ ਕੀਹ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?
ਮੇਰਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਕਰਿ ਰੋਵੀਜੈ ॥
mayraa mayraa kar roveejai.
We cry out, saying he was mine.
ਇਹ ਆਖ ਆਖ ਕੇ ਰੋਵੀਦਾ ਹੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਮੇਰਾ (ਪਿਆਰਾ) ਸੀ ਮੇਰਾ (ਪਿਆਰਾ) ਸੀ।
ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਰੋਇ ਵਿਗੂਚਹਿ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
maa-i-aa kaaran ro-ay vigoocheh Dharig jeevan sansaaraa hay. ||8||
But all those who cry, cry for the sake of Maya, the worldly riches and support that the deceased could provide them; accursed is such a life in the world. ||8||
(ਜੇਹੜੇ ਰੋਂਦੇ ਭੀ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਭੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਰੋ ਰੋ ਕੇ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਅਜੇਹਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਫਿਟਕਾਰ-ਜੋਗ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥
ਕਾਲੀ ਹੂ ਫੁਨਿ ਧਉਲੇ ਆਏ ॥
kaalee hoo fun Dha-ulay aa-ay.
Even when the black hair turn grey and one transitions from youth into old age,
(ਜਵਾਨੀ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ) ਕਾਲੇ ਕੇਸਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਫਿਰ ਧੌਲੇ ਆ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਗਥੁ ਗਇਆ ਗਵਾਏ ॥
vin naavai gath ga-i-aa gavaa-ay.
without meditating on God’s Name, one departs from the world losing his wealth of life-breaths.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝਿਆ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਸਰਮਾਇਆ ਗਵਾ ਕੇ ਟੁਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਅੰਧੁਲਾ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਬਿਨਾਸੈ ਮੂਠੇ ਰੋਇ ਪੂਕਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੯॥
durmat anDhulaa binas binaasai moothay ro-ay pookaaraa hay. ||9||
A person of evil intellect, blinded by the love of Maya deteriorates spiritually; though deceived by materialism, he still keeps crying for it. ||9||
ਭੈੜੀ ਮੱਤੇ ਲੱਗ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਜੀਵ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਸਹੇੜ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ ਮਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਠੱਗਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਹੀ ਰੋ ਰੋ ਕੇ ਪੁਕਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਉਮਰ ਤਕ ਭੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਰੋਣੇ ਰੋਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ) ॥੯॥
ਆਪੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ਨ ਰੋਵੈ ਕੋਈ ॥
aap veechaar na rovai ko-ee.
One who reflects on himself (examines his own spiritual life), does not repent.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਚਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਆਪਣੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਪੜਤਾਲਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਉਹ ਪਛੁਤਾਂਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਈ ॥
satgur milai ta sojhee ho-ee.
But one attains this understanding only when he meets the true Guru and follows his teachings.
ਪਰ ਇਹ ਸੋਝੀ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਬਜਰ ਕਪਾਟ ਨ ਖੂਲਹਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥
bin gur bajar kapaat na khooleh sabad milai nistaaraa hay. ||10||
Engrossed in the love for Maya, one remains spiritually ignorant as if his intellect is prisoned behind heavy doors which do not open without the Guru’s teachings; one gets freed from the love of Maya only by focusing on the divine word. ||10||
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਅਕਲ ਤੇ ਪੜਦਾ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ; ਅਕਲ, ਮਾਨੋ, ਕਰੜੇ ਕਵਾੜਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਬੰਦ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਹ ਕਰੜੇ ਕਵਾੜ ਖੁਲ੍ਹਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ। ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਇਸ ਕੈਦ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੦॥
ਬਿਰਧਿ ਭਇਆ ਤਨੁ ਛੀਜੈ ਦੇਹੀ ॥
biraDh bha-i-aa tan chheejai dayhee.
When one becomes old, his body becomes weak.
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਬੁੱਢਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਉਸ ਦਾ) ਸਰੀਰ ਭੀ ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਪਈ ਅੰਤਿ ਸਨੇਹੀ ॥
raam na jap-ee ant sanayhee.
But still, he does not remember God, the real companion in the end.
ਅਜੇ ਭੀ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਅਖ਼ੀਰ ਦੇ ਵੇਲੇ ਦੇ ਮਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ।
ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਚਲੈ ਮੁਹਿ ਕਾਲੈ ਦਰਗਹ ਝੂਠੁ ਖੁਆਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥
naam visaar chalai muhi kaalai dargeh jhooth khu-aaraa hay. ||11||
One who has forsaken God’s Name departs from the world in disgrace and due to falsehood (love for materialism), he is humiliated in God’s presence. ||11||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਬਦਨਾਮੀ ਦਾ ਟਿੱਕਾ ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ ਲਾ ਕੇ ਇਥੋਂ ਤੁਰ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪੱਲੇ ਝੂਠ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਹੀ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੧॥
ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਚਲੈ ਕੂੜਿਆਰੋ ॥
naam visaar chalai koorhi-aaro.
Forsaking God’s Name, one who always remains busy in worldly pursuits, departs from the world (without any divine virtues).
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ (ਸਾਰੀ ਉਮਰ) ਕੂੜ ਦਾ ਵਣਜ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਬੰਦਾ (ਇਥੋਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਖ਼ਾਲੀ-ਹੱਥ) ਤੁਰ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਵਤ ਜਾਤ ਪੜੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਛਾਰੋ ॥
aavat jaat parhai sir chhaaro.
Going through the cycle of birth and death, he feels so humiliated as if ashes are smeared on his head.
ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਏ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਸੁਆਹ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਫਿਟਕਾਰ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ)।
ਸਾਹੁਰੜੈ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸੁ ਨ ਪਾਏ ਪੇਈਅੜੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਮਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥
saahurrhai ghar vaas na paa-ay pay-ee-arhai sir maaraa hay. ||12||
He is like that girl who always endures misery in her parents home (in this world) and receive no place of honor in her in-laws home (God’s presence). ||12||
(ਇਥੋਂ ਗਏ ਨੂੰ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਢੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦੀ, (ਜਿਤਨਾ ਚਿਰ) ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ (ਰਿਹਾ ਇਥੇ) ਭੀ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਸੱਟਾਂ ਹੀ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ ॥੧੨॥
ਖਾਜੈ ਪੈਝੈ ਰਲੀ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥
khaajai paijhai ralee kareejai.
One eats good food, wears good clothes, and revels in joy,
ਬੰਦਾ ਚੰਗਾ ਖਾਂਦਾ, ਚੰਗਾਪਹਿਨਦਾ, ਅਤੇ ਅਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਬਿਨੁ ਅਭ ਭਗਤੀ ਬਾਦਿ ਮਰੀਜੈ ॥
bin abh bhagtee baad mareejai.
but without loving devotional worship of God he spiritually deteriorates in vain.
ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਦਿਲੀ-ਸੇਵਾ ਭਗਤੀ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਰ ਅਪਸਰ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਜਮੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਕਿਆ ਚਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥
sar apsar kee saar na jaanai jam maaray ki-aa chaaraa hay. ||13||
One who does not know the difference between virtue and vice, what can he do when the demon of death punishes him? ||13||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਬੰਦਾ ਚੰਗੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਜਦੋਂ ਜਮ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਬਚਾਅ ਦਾ ਕੀ ਹੀਲਾ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ? ॥੧੩॥
ਪਰਵਿਰਤੀ ਨਰਵਿਰਤਿ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
parvirtee narvirat pachhaanai.
One who knows how to remain detached from the world, even while engaged in his worldly duties,
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਤ-ਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਤੋਂ ਉਪਰਾਮ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਘਰੁ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
gur kai sang sabad ghar jaanai.
and realizes God in his heart by keeping his mind focused on the divine word in the company of the Guru,
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ-ਘਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਅਨੁਭਵ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਕਿਸ ਹੀ ਮੰਦਾ ਆਖਿ ਨ ਚਲੈ ਸਚਿ ਖਰਾ ਸਚਿਆਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥
kis hee mandaa aakh na chalai sach kharaa sachi-aaraa hay. ||14||
he conducts his life by not considering any one bad; thus living a truthful life, he is judged true in God’s presence. ||14||
ਜੀਵਨ-ਸਫ਼ਰ ਵਿਚ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਮੰਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਖ ਦਾ, ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਸੱਚ ਦਾ ਵਪਾਰੀ ਬੰਦਾ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ) ਖਰਾ (ਸਿੱਕਾ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ) ਹੈ ॥੧੪॥
ਸਾਚ ਬਿਨਾ ਦਰਿ ਸਿਝੈ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
saach binaa dar sijhai na ko-ee.
Without lovingly remembering God,no one is judged successful in His presence.
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ) ਦਰ ਤੇ (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ ਪੜਤਾਲ ਵਿਚ) ਕਾਮਯਾਬ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
ਸਾਚ ਸਬਦਿ ਪੈਝੈ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥
saach sabad paijhai pat ho-ee.
One receives honor in the eternal God’s presence only by focusing on the divine word of His praises.
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆਂ ਸਰੋਪਾ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸਿ ਲਏ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਗਰਬੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥
aapay bakhas la-ay tis bhaavai ha-umai garab nivaaraa hay. ||15||
One on whom God bestows grace, he eradicates his ego and self-conceit and becomes dear to Him.||15||
ਜਿਸ ਉਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਹਉਮੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਵੈ-ਹੰਗਤਾ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਣ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੫॥
ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
gur kirpaa tay hukam pachhaanai.
One who realizes God’s Command by the Guru’s grace,
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਜੁਗਹ ਜੁਗੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
jugah jugantar kee biDh jaanai.
comes to know the way of righteous life prevailing for ages.
ਉਹ ਜੁਗਾਂ ਜੁਗਾਂਤਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਚਲੀ ਆ ਰਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਰਹੁ-ਰੀਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਤਰੁ ਤਾਰੀ ਸਚੁ ਤਾਰੇ ਤਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੧॥੭॥
naanak naam japahu tar taaree sach taaray taaranhaaraa hay. ||16||1||7||
O’ Nanak, meditate on Naam, which is like a ship to cross the world-ocean of vices; the eternal God who alone is capable of ferring, will ferry us. ||16||1||7||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ ) ਨਾਮ ਜਪੋ ਜੋ ਪਾਰ ਹੋਣ ਲਈ ਇਕ ਬੇੜੀ ਹੈ।, (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੇ ਤਾਰਣ ਦੇ ਸਮਰੱਥ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੬॥੧॥੭॥

Raag Maaroo, First Guru:
ਹਰਿ ਸਾ ਮੀਤੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਮੈ ਕੋਈ ॥
har saa meet naahee mai ko-ee.
I do not know or see any friend like God.
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਰਗਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ,
ਜਿਨਿ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਦੀਆ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਮੋਈ ॥
jin tan man dee-aa surat samo-ee.
who has given me this body and mind, and has instilled in me the awareness.
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਇਹ (ਮਨ) ਜਿੰਦ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਤੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸੂਝ ਟਿਕਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ।
ਸਰਬ ਜੀਆ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਿ ਸਮਾਲੇ ਸੋ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਦਾਨਾ ਬੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧॥
sarab jee-aa partipaal samaalay so antar daanaa beenaa hay. ||1||
God cherishes and cares for all beings; He is omniscient and pervades all. ||1||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਾਲਣਾ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਭ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ,, ਸਭ ਦੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਗੁਰੁ ਸਰਵਰੁ ਹਮ ਹੰਸ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥
gur sarvar ham hans pi-aaray.
The Guru is like a sacred pool, and we human beings are like his beloved swans.
ਗੁਰੂ ਸਰੋਵਰ ਹੈ, ਅਸੀਂ ਜੀਵ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹੰਸ ਹਾਂ।
ਸਾਗਰ ਮਹਿ ਰਤਨ ਲਾਲ ਬਹੁ ਸਾਰੇ ॥
saagar meh ratan laal baho saaray.
Within the sea-like Guru, there are lots of jewels and rubies-like precious divine virtues and words of God’s praises.
(ਗੁਰੂ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਹੈ) ਉਸ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ) ਰਤਨ ਹਨ, ਲਾਲ ਹਨ, ਮੋਤੀ ਮਾਣਕ ਹਨ, ਹੀਰੇ ਹਨ।
ਮੋਤੀ ਮਾਣਕ ਹੀਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਵਤ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਭੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
motee maanak heeraa har jas gaavat man tan bheenaa hay. ||2||
The mind and body get immersed in God’s love by singing His praises in the company of the Guru. ||2||
(ਗੁਰੂ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਿਆਂ ਮਨ (ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ) ਭਿੱਜ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਰੀਰ (ਭੀ) ਭਿੱਜ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਹਰਿ ਅਗਮ ਅਗਾਹੁ ਅਗਾਧਿ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ॥
har agam agaahu agaaDh niraalaa.
God is inaccessible, incomprehensible, unfathomable, and detached.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ, ਅਥਾਹ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ (ਦੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ) ਦੀ ਹਾਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭਦੀ, ਉਹ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਪਾਲਾ ॥
har ant na paa-ee-ai gur gopaalaa.
The limits of God’s virtues cannot be found; the divine-Guru is the protector of the universe.
ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦੇ ਰਾਖੇ, ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡੇ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਅੰਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਤਿ ਤਾਰੇ ਤਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ਮੇਲਿ ਲਏ ਰੰਗਿ ਲੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
satgur mat taaray taaranhaaraa mayl la-ay rang leenaa hay. ||3||
The savior God ferries the beings through the true Guru’s teachings; one gets imbued with God’s love whom He unites with Naam. ||3||
ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾਣ ਦੇ ਸਮਰੱਥ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜਿਸ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਿਨੇਹੀ ॥
satgur baajhahu mukat kinayhee.
What kind of freedom from the love for materialism is achieved without following the teachings of the true Guru?
ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਕਾਹਦੀ? ।
ਓਹੁ ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦੀ ਰਾਮ ਸਨੇਹੀ ॥
oh aad jugaadee raam sanayhee.
The Guru is the friend of the all pervading God, who has been there from the very beginning of time and throughout the ages.
ਜੋ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਐਨ ਆਰੰਭ ਅਤੇ ਯੁਗਾਂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਹਨ।
ਦਰਗਹ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਬਖਸੇ ਅਵਗੁਣ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੪॥
dargeh mukat karay kar kirpaa bakhsay avgun keenaa hay. ||4||
Bestowing mercy, God forgives our sins, grants freedom from the vices and keeps us in His presence. ||4||
ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸਾਡੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਔਗੁਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਾਨੂੰ ਔਗੁਣਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
