ਛੋਡਿਹੁ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਤਾਤਿ ਪਰਾਈ ॥
chhodihu nindaa taat paraa-ee.
O’ brother, abandon the habit of slandering and envy of others.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ, ਪਰਾਈ ਈਰਖਾ ਤੇ ਪਰਾਈ ਨਿੰਦਿਆ ਛੱਡ ਦਿਉ।
ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਦਝਹਿ ਸਾਤਿ ਨ ਆਈ ॥
parh parh dajheh saat na aa-ee.
Those who indulge in slandering and envy, endure so much misery, as if they are always being burnt and tortured; they never get any inner peace.
(ਜੇਹੜੇ ਨਿੰਦਿਆ ਤੇ ਈਰਖਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਨਿੰਦਿਆ ਤੇ ਈਰਖਾ ਦੀ ਸੜਨ ਵਿਚ) ਪੈ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਸੜਦੇ ਹਨ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ) ਆਤਮਕ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦੀ।
ਮਿਲਿ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹਹੁ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੁ ਸਖਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੭॥
mil satsangat naam salaahahu aatam raam sakhaa-ee hay. ||7||
Therefore, join the company of saintly persons and sing praise of God’s Name, the all pervading God would become your companion for ever. ||7||
ਸਤ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰੋ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਸਦਾ ਦਾ ਸਾਥੀ ਬਣ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ ॥੭॥
ਛੋਡਹੁ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਬੁਰਿਆਈ ॥
chhodahu kaam kroDh buri-aa-ee.
O my friend, abandon the evils such as lust and anger.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ, ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਆਦਿਕ ਮੰਦ ਕਰਮ ਤਿਆਗੋ,
ਹਉਮੈ ਧੰਧੁ ਛੋਡਹੁ ਲੰਪਟਾਈ ॥
ha-umai DhanDh chhodahu lamptaa-ee.
also abandon your involvement in egotistical affairs and conflicts.
ਹਉਮੈ ਦੀ ਉਲਝਣ ਛੱਡੋ, (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਖਚਿਤ ਹੋਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਚੋ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰਹੁ ਤਾ ਉਬਰਹੁ ਇਉ ਤਰੀਐ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਭਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
satgur saran parahu taa ubrahu i-o taree-ai bhavjal bhaa-ee hay. ||8||
But you would rise above these evils only if you seek the refuge of the true Guru; O’ brother, this is how we swim across the world-ocean of vices. ||8||
(ਪਰ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਬਚ ਸਕੋਗੇ ਜੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲਵੋਗੇ। ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਸਕੀਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥
ਆਗੈ ਬਿਮਲ ਨਦੀ ਅਗਨਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਝੇਲਾ ॥
aagai bimal nadee agan bikh jhaylaa.
The life of a person engrossed in vices becomes so agonizing as if his journey is through the river of pure fire, the flames of which are poison for the spiritual life.
ਨਿੰਦਾ ਤਾਤਿ ਪਰਾਈ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਬੁਰਿਆਈ ਵਾਲੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਂ ਨਿਰੋਲ ਅੱਗ ਦੀ ਨਦੀ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਦੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਪੰਧ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਥੇ ਉਹ ਲਾਟਾਂ ਨਿਕਲਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਮੁਕਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
ਤਿਥੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਜੀਉ ਇਕੇਲਾ ॥
tithai avar na ko-ee jee-o ikaylaa.
There is no companion on that spiritual journey, one is all by itself to agonize.
ਉਸ ਆਤਮਕ ਬਿਪਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਸਾਥੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣਦਾ, ਇਕੱਲੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਹੀ ਦੁੱਖ ਸਹਾਰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਭੜ ਭੜ ਅਗਨਿ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਦੇ ਲਹਰੀ ਪੜਿ ਦਝਹਿ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਤਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੯॥
bharh bharh agan saagar day lahree parh dajheh manmukh taa-ee hay. ||9||
The self-willed people endure so much suffering, as if they have fallen in the ocean of fire emitting waves of flames burning their spiritual life. ||9||
ਨਿੰਦਿਆ ਈਰਖਾ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੀ) ਅੱਗ ਦਾ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਇਤਨਾ ਭਾਂਬੜ ਬਾਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਇਤਨੀਆਂ ਲਾਟਾਂ ਛੱਡਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਉਸ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਸੜਦੇ ਹਨ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਤਬਾਹ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ) ॥੯॥
ਗੁਰ ਪਹਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦਾਨੁ ਦੇ ਭਾਣੈ ॥
gur peh mukat daan day bhaanai.
The way of freedom from this sinful life is Naam, which is with the Guru; but the Guru grants this blessing of Naam by the pleasure of his will.
(ਇਸ ਅੱਗ ਦੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ (ਦਾ ਵਸੀਲਾ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਪਾਸ ਹੀ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਆਪਣੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ) ਖੈਰ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਨਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਸੋਈ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
jin paa-i-aa so-ee biDh jaanai.
He who has received this gift of Naam, knows the way out of the ocean of vices.
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਖੈਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤੀ ਉਹ (ਇਸ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਬਚ ਨਿਕਲਣ ਦਾ) ਭੇਤ ਸਮਝ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਤਿਨ ਪੂਛਹੁ ਭਾਈ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵ ਕਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥
jin paa-i-aa tin poochhahu bhaa-ee sukh satgur sayv kamaa-ee hay. ||10||
O’ brother, ask those who have received Naam, they would tell you that bliss is attained only by remembering God by following the true Guru’s teachings. ||10||
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਨਾਮ-ਦਾਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਪੁੱਛ ਕੇ ਵੇਖ ਲਵੋ (ਉਹ ਦੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੦॥
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਉਰਝਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਬੇਕਾਰਾ ॥
gur bin urajh mareh baykaaraa.
Without following the Guru’s teachings, the human beings entangle themself in vices and spiritually deteriorate.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੀਵ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਸਹੇੜ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਜਮੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਮਾਰੇ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਆਰਾ ॥
jam sir maaray karay khu-aaraa.
The fear of death hits them hard (tortures) and humiliates them.
(ਆਤਮਕ) ਮੌਤ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ) ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ (ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ) ਚੋਟ ਮਾਰਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਕਰਦੀ (ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ)।
ਬਾਧੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਰ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਡੂਬਹਿ ਨਿੰਦ ਪਰਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥
baaDhay mukat naahee nar nindak doobeh nind paraa-ee hay. ||11||
People bound in the habit of slandering, do not get release from it, and they remain drowned in the evil habit of slandering others. ||11||
(ਨਿੰਦਿਆ ਦੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਵਿਚ) ਬੱਝੇ ਹੋਏ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ (ਨਿੰਦਿਆ ਦੀ ਵਾਦੀ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਨਸੀਬ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ, ਪਰਾਈ ਨਿੰਦਿਆ (ਦੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚ) ਸਦਾ ਗੋਤੇ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧੧॥
ਬੋਲਹੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਛਾਣਹੁ ਅੰਦਰਿ ॥
bolhu saach pachhaanhu andar.
O’ brother, always meditate on the eternal God and realize Him within.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ, ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪੋ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਤ ਕਰੋ।
ਦੂਰਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਕਰਿ ਨੰਦਰਿ ॥
door naahee daykhhu kar nandar.
If you look carefully, you would find that He is not far from you.
ਧਿਆਨ ਲਾ ਕੇ ਵੇਖੋ, ਉਹ ਤੁਹਾਥੋਂ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਘਨੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਰੁ ਤਾਰੀ ਇਉ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਲੰਘਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥
bighan naahee gurmukh tar taaree i-o bhavjal paar langhaa-ee hay. ||12||
If you follow the Guru’s teachings and always remember God, then no obstacles would come in your life; this is how the Guru ferries us across the world-ocean of vices. ||12||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ (ਨਾਮ ਜਪੋ, ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ) ਤਾਰੀ ਤਰੋ (ਜੀਵਨ-ਸਫ਼ਰ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ) ਰੁਕਾਵਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਵੇਗੀ। ਗੁਰੂ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ (ਭਾਵ, ਨਾਮ ਜਪਾ ਕੇ) ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੨॥
ਦੇਹੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ॥
dayhee andar naam nivaasee.
O’ brother, God’s Name dwells within all beings.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਹੈ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ॥
aapay kartaa hai abhinaasee.
God Himself is the creator and is immortal.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਸਿਰਜਦਹਾਰ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਅਮਰ ਹੈ।
ਨਾ ਜੀਉ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਜਾਈ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥
naa jee-o marai na maari-aa jaa-ee kar daykhai sabad rajaa-ee hay. ||13||
Soul neither dies, nor it can be killed; after creating the creatures, God takes care of them in accordance with His command. ||13||
ਜੀਵਾਤਮਾ ਨਾ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਨਾ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਮਾਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੀਵ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਸਭ ਦੀ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੩॥
ਓਹੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਅੰਧਿਆਰਾ ॥
oh nirmal hai naahee anDhi-aaraa.
God is immaculate and He has no darkness (attachment of any kind) in Him.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸੁੱਧ-ਸਰੂਪ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਵਿਚ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਆਦਿਕ ਦਾ) ਰਤਾ ਭੀ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
ਓਹੁ ਆਪੇ ਤਖਤਿ ਬਹੈ ਸਚਿਆਰਾ ॥
oh aapay takhat bahai sachi-aaraa.
The eternal God Himself sits on the throne of every heart.
ਉਹ ਸੱਚ-ਸਰੂਪ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਹਰੇਕ ਦੇ) ਹਿਰਦੇ ਤਖ਼ਤ ਉਤੇ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਕਤ ਕੂੜੇ ਬੰਧਿ ਭਵਾਈਅਹਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮਹਿ ਆਈ ਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥
saakat koorhay banDh bhavaa-ee-ah mar janmeh aa-ee jaa-ee hay. ||14||
The faithless cynics, bound in the love for materialism, are forced to wander in reincarnation; they die to be born again and their cycle of birth and death continues. ||14||
ਮਾਇਆ-ਵੇੜ੍ਹੇ ਜੀਵ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਝੇ ਜੂਨੀਆਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਭਟਕਾਏ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਜੰਮਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਆਵਾਗਵਨ ਦਾ ਗੇੜ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੪॥
ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥
gur kay sayvak satgur pi-aaray.
The Guru’s disciples love their Guru,
ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸੇਵਕ,
ਓਇ ਬੈਸਹਿ ਤਖਤਿ ਸੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥
o-ay baiseh takhat so sabad veechaaray.
they reflect on the Guru’s divine word and sit on the throne of the heart (control their thoughts).
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਵੀਚਾਰ ਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ-ਤਖ਼ਤ ਉਤੇ ਬੈਠੇਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਤਤੁ ਲਹਹਿ ਅੰਤਰਗਤਿ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਵਡਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥
tat laheh antargat jaaneh satsangat saach vadaa-ee hay. ||15||
They realize the primal God by recognizing Him within; they lovingly remember God in the holy congregation and receive glory. ||15||
ਉਹ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਮੂਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਲੱਭ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਪਛਾਣ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਆਦਰ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧੫॥
ਆਪਿ ਤਰੈ ਜਨੁ ਪਿਤਰਾ ਤਾਰੇ ॥
aap tarai jan pitraa taaray.
A true devotee of God swims across the world ocean of vices and also ferries across (saves) his ancestors as well.
ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਗੋਲਾ ਖ਼ੁਦ ਪਾਰ ਉੱਤਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਵੱਡਿਆਂ ਵਡੇਰਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਭੀ ਪਾਰ ਉਤਾਰਾ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਸੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰੇ ॥
sangat mukat so paar utaaray.
All those who remain in his company become free from the bond of materialism, thus he carries them across the world-ocean of vices,
ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਆਉਣ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸੁਤੰਤ੍ਰਤਾ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਲਾਲਾ ਗੋਲਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੬॥
naanak tis kaa laalaa golaa jin gurmukh har liv laa-ee hay. ||16||6||
Nanak is a humble servant of that person, who has attuned his mind to God by following the Guru’s teachings. ||16||6||
ਨਾਨਕ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸੇਵਕ ਹੈ ਗ਼ੁਲਾਮ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜੀ ਹੈ ; ॥੧੬॥੬॥
ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Raag Maaroo, First Guru:
ਕੇਤੇ ਜੁਗ ਵਰਤੇ ਗੁਬਾਰੈ ॥
kaytay jug vartay gubaarai.
O’ brother, myriads of ages passed in complete darkness,
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ, ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ ਜੁਗ ਘੁੱਪ ਹਨੇਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਲੰਘ ਗਏ,
ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਈ ਅਪਰ ਅਪਾਰੈ ॥
taarhee laa-ee apar apaarai.
during which the infinite God was absorbed in Himself in deep meditation.
ਤਦੋਂ ਅਪਰ ਅਪਾਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਵਿਚ) ਸਮਾਧੀ ਲਾਈ ਹੋਈ ਸੀ।
ਧੁੰਧੂਕਾਰਿ ਨਿਰਾਲਮੁ ਬੈਠਾ ਨਾ ਤਦਿ ਧੰਧੁ ਪਸਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧॥
DhunDhookaar niraalam baithaa naa tad DhanDh pasaaraa hay. ||1||
In that darkness, God was all by Himself unattached (in the intangible form), and there was neither worldly expanse nor any conflicts. ||1||
ਉਸ ਘੁੱਪ ਹਨੇਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ, ਤਦੋਂ ਨਾਹ ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਖਿਲਾਰਾ ਸੀ ਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਾਲੀ ਦੌੜ-ਭੱਜ ਸੀ ॥੧॥
ਜੁਗ ਛਤੀਹ ਤਿਨੈ ਵਰਤਾਏ ॥
jug chhateeh tinai vartaa-ay.
God let thirty six ages of total darkness pass.
(ਘੁੱਪ ਹਨੇਰੇ ਦੇ) ਛੱਤੀ ਜੁਗ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਹੀ ਵਰਤਾਈ ਰੱਖੇ,
ਜਿਉ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਣਾ ਤਿਵੈ ਚਲਾਏ ॥
ji-o tis bhaanaa tivai chalaa-ay.
He ran (these eras), as He wished.
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਾ ਉਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ (ਉਸ ਘੁੱਪ ਹਨੇਰੇ ਵਾਲੀ ਕਾਰ ਹੀ) ਚਲਾਂਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ।
ਤਿਸਹਿ ਸਰੀਕੁ ਨ ਦੀਸੈ ਕੋਈ ਆਪੇ ਅਪਰ ਅਪਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
tiseh sareek na deesai ko-ee aapay apar apaaraa hay. ||2||
Nobody seems to be God’s rival; He Himself is infinite and endless. ||2||
ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਅਤੇ ਹੱਦ ਬੰਨਾ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ। ॥੨॥
ਗੁਪਤੇ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਜੁਗ ਚਤੁਆਰੇ ॥
guptay boojhhu jug chatu-aaray.
O’ brother, understand that, even now God has been existing in His creation invisibly throughout all the four ages (Sat Yug, Treta, Duappar, and Kalyug).
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ, ਹੁਣ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਚੌਹਾਂ ਜੁਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ (ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਗੁਪਤ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਜਾਣੋ।
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਉਦਰ ਮਝਾਰੇ ॥
ghat ghat vartai udar majhaaray.
God pervades each and every heart and in each and every body.
ਉਹ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਹਰੇਕ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹਰੇਕ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ।
ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਏਕਾ ਏਕੀ ਵਰਤੈ ਕੋਈ ਬੂਝੈ ਗੁਰ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
jug jug aykaa aykee vartai ko-ee boojhai gur veechaaraa hay. ||3||
In every age, only the same one God alone pervades; but only a rare person, who reflects on the Guru’s word, understands this fact. ||3||
ਉਹ ਇਕੱਲਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹਰੇਕ ਜੁਗ ਵਿਚ (ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਰਮ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ-ਇਸ ਭੇਤ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਉਹ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਬੰਦਾ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ (ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ) ਦੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਬਿੰਦੁ ਰਕਤੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਰੀਆ ॥
bind rakat mil pind saree-aa.
(Under God’s command), the sperm and the egg united together and fashioned the body.
( ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ) ਪਿਤਾ ਦੇ ਵੀਰਜ ਦੀ ਬੂੰਦ ਤੇ ਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੇਟ ਦੇ ਲਹੂ ਨੇ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ (ਮਨੁੱਖਾ) ਸਰੀਰ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
ਪਉਣੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਅਗਨੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਜੀਆ ॥
pa-un paanee agnee mil jee-aa.
Then joining together the air, water, and fire, God created the human being.
ਹਵਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਅੱਗ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਾ ਕੇ ਜੀਵ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ ਚੋਜ ਕਰੇ ਰੰਗ ਮਹਲੀ ਹੋਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਪਸਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੪॥
aapay choj karay rang mahlee hor maa-i-aa moh pasaaraa hay. ||4||
Sitting in lovely mansion-like bodies, God Himself plays His charming plays; besides this all else is the expanse of Maya (worldly riches and power). ||4||
ਹਰੇਕ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਬੈਠਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਚੋਜ ਤਮਾਸ਼ੇ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਮਮਤਾ ਦਾ ਖਿਲਾਰਾ ਹੈ। ॥੪॥
ਗਰਭ ਕੁੰਡਲ ਮਹਿ ਉਰਧ ਧਿਆਨੀ ॥
garabh kundal meh uraDh Dhi-aanee.
While hanging upside down within the mother’s womb, a human being remains focused on God.
ਜੀਵ ਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੇਟ ਵਿਚ ਪੁੱਠਾ (ਲਟਕ ਕੇ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥
aapay jaanai antarjaamee.
The omniscient God Himself knows everything.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਦਿਲ ਦੀ) ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲੇ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਉਦਰ ਮਝਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੫॥
saas saas sach naam samaalay antar udar majhaaraa hay. ||5||
In the mother’s womb, with every breath, the mortal remembers the eternal God’s Name. ||5||
ਜੀਵ ਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੇਟ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਸੁਆਸ ਸੁਆਸ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਚੇਤੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
