ਨਾਵਹੁ ਭੁਲੀ ਚੋਟਾ ਖਾਏ ॥
naavhu bhulee chotaa khaa-ay.
Strayed away from God’s Name, the self-willed soul-bride endures suffering.
ਜੇਹੜੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਦੁੱਖ ਸਹਾਰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਬਹੁਤੁ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਏ ॥
bahut si-aanap bharam na jaa-ay.
Even great cleverness does not dispel her doubt.
ਬਹੁਤ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਰਾਹੀਂ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸੰਦੇਹ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
ਪਚਿ ਪਚਿ ਮੁਏ ਅਚੇਤ ਨ ਚੇਤਹਿ ਅਜਗਰਿ ਭਾਰਿ ਲਦਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
pach pach mu-ay achayt na cheeteh ajgar bhaar ladaa-ee hay. ||8||
All those who do not remember God, carrying a heavy load of sin, and are consumed by spiritual deterioration. ||8||
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਚੇਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ, (ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ) ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੋ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਸਹੇੜਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ (ਮੋਹ ਦੇ) ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਭਾਰੇ ਬੋਝ ਹੇਠ ਲੱਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੮॥
ਬਿਨੁ ਬਾਦ ਬਿਰੋਧਹਿ ਕੋਈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
bin baad biroDheh ko-ee naahee.
No one engrossed in materialism is free of conflict and strife.
(ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆਂ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਝਗੜਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਵਿਰੋਧ ਤੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਖ਼ਾਲੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ,
ਮੈ ਦੇਖਾਲਿਹੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ॥
mai daykhaalihu tis saalaahee.
Show me anyone who is not involved in such strife, and I will praise him.
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਐਸਾ ਵਿਖਾਓ (ਜਿਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਹ ਵੈਰ ਵਿਰੋਧ ਨਹੀਂ), ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਤਕਾਰ ਕਰਾਂਗਾ ।
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਅਰਪਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਬਣਤ ਬਣਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੯॥
man tan arap milai jagjeevan har si-o banat banaa-ee hay. ||9||
One realizes God, the life of the world, by surrendering his body and mind to Him; such is the way God has designed for union with Him. ||9||
ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਭੇਟਾ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਬਣਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੯॥
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
parabh kee gat mit ko-ay na paavai.
No one knows the state and extent of God.
ਕੋਈ ਆਦਮੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣ ਸਕਦਾ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਕਿਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਕੇਡਾ ਵੱਡਾ ਹੈ।
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਵਡਾ ਕਹਾਇ ਵਡਾਈ ਖਾਵੈ ॥
jay ko vadaa kahaa-ay vadaa-ee khaavai.
If someone feels that he is so great that he knows the extent of God, the arrogance of such greatness spiritually ruins that one.
ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਡਾ ਅਖਵਾ ਕੇ (ਇਹ ਮਾਣ ਕਰੇ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਲੱਭ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ) ਮਾਣ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਤਬਾਹ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਦਾਤੀ ਸਗਲੀ ਤਿਨਹਿ ਉਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥
saachay saahib tot na daatee saglee tineh upaa-ee hay. ||10||
The eternal God who has created the entire universe never falls short of bestowing His bounties. ||10||
ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਨੇ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ (ਸਭ ਨੂੰ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਉਸ ਦੀਆਂ) ਦਾਤਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਕਮੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ ॥੧੦॥
ਵਡੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੇ ॥
vadee vadi-aa-ee vayparvaahay.
Great is the glorious greatness of the carefree God,
ਵਿਸ਼ਾਲ ਹੈ ਬੇ-ਪਰਵਾਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ,
ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਦਾਨੁ ਸਮਾਹੇ ॥
aap upaa-ay daan samaahay.
He Himself creates all the beings and provides them with their sustenance.
ਆਪ ਹੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਨੂੰ ਰਿਜ਼ਕ ਅਪੜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪਿ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਦੂਰਿ ਨਹੀ ਦਾਤਾ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਸਹਜਿ ਰਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥
aap da-i-aal door nahee daataa mili-aa sahj rajaa-ee hay. ||11||
The benefactor God is merciful, He is not far from anybody and He is the Master of His will; one who realizes Him, becomes spiritually poise. ||11||
ਸਭ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਇਆ ਦਾ ਸੋਮਾ ਹੈ, ਕਿਸੇ ਭੀ ਜੀਵ ਤੋਂ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਜਿਸ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਭੀ) ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡਲੋਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੧॥
ਇਕਿ ਸੋਗੀ ਇਕਿ ਰੋਗਿ ਵਿਆਪੇ ॥
ik sogee ik rog vi-aapay.
Myriads of people are afflicted with sorrow and many with disease.
(ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦੇ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜੀਵ ਸੋਗ ਵਿਚ ਗ੍ਰਸੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜੀਵ ਰੋਗ ਹੇਠ ਦਬਾਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪੇ ॥
jo kichh karay so aapay aapay.
Whatever God does, He does by Himself.
ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਭਗਤਿ ਭਾਉ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਪੂਰੀ ਅਨਹਦਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਲਖਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥
bhagat bhaa-o gur kee mat pooree anhad sabad lakhaa-ee hay. ||12||
One who performs loving devotional worship through the perfect teaching of the Guru, he remains focused on the eternal God; through the Guru’s divine word, God reveals Himself to that one. ||12||
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਪੂਰੀ ਮੱਤ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਗੰਢਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਉਸ ਅਮਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪ ਲਖਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੨॥
ਇਕਿ ਨਾਗੇ ਭੂਖੇ ਭਵਹਿ ਭਵਾਏ ॥
ik naagay bhookhay bhaveh bhavaa-ay.
Myriads of people wander around naked and hungry (in the misunderstanding that they have given up materialism).
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਬੰਦੇ (ਜਗਤ ਤਿਆਗ ਕੇ) ਨੰਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਭੁੱਖਾਂ ਕੱਟਦੇ ਹਨ (ਤਿਆਗ ਦੇ ਭੁਲੇਖੇ ਦੇ) ਭਟਕਾਏ ਹੋਏ (ਥਾਂ ਥਾਂ) ਭੌਂਦੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਇਕਿ ਹਠੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਨ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਏ ॥
ik hath kar mareh na keemat paa-ay.
Many people die while doing obstinate deeds (for attaining some specific miraculous power), but they do not know the worth of human life.
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਬੰਦੇ (ਕਿਸੇ ਮਿਥੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਉੱਨਤੀ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ) ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਉਤੇ ਧੱਕਾ-ਜ਼ੋਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਪਰ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਕਦਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦੇ ।
ਗਤਿ ਅਵਿਗਤ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥
gat avigat kee saar na jaanai boojhai sabad kamaa-ee hay. ||13||
None of them knows about a high or a low spiritual state of mind; he alone, who lives by the Guru’s teachings, understands this. ||13||
ਅਜੇਹੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ। ਉਹੀ ਬੰਦਾ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਕਮਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੩॥
ਇਕਿ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਵਹਿ ਅੰਨੁ ਨ ਖਾਵਹਿ ॥
ik tirath naaveh ann na khaaveh.
Myriads of people bathe at pilgrimage places and do not eat food.
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਬੰਦੇ (ਜਗਤ ਤਿਆਗ ਕੇ) ਤੀਰਥ (ਤੀਰਥਾਂ) ਉਤੇ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਅੰਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਖਾਂਦੇ (ਦੁਧਾਧਾਰੀ ਬਣਦੇ ਹਨ)।
ਇਕਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਜਲਾਵਹਿ ਦੇਹ ਖਪਾਵਹਿ ॥
ik agan jalaaveh dayh khapaaveh.
Many people light fires and torment their bodies by sitting before it.
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਬੰਦੇ (ਤਿਆਗੀ ਬਣ ਕੇ) ਅੱਗ ਬਾਲਦੇ ਹਨ (ਧੂਣੀਆਂ ਤਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ) ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ (ਤਪਾਂ ਦਾ) ਕਸ਼ਟ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਕਿਤੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਲੰਘਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥
raam naam bin mukat na ho-ee kit biDh paar langhaa-ee hay. ||14||
They do not realize that freedom from materialism is not attained without remembering God’s Name and in no other way, one is ferried across the worldly ocean of vices. ||14||
ਪਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦੀ। ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੰਘ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੧੪॥
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਛੋਡਹਿ ਉਝੜਿ ਜਾਈ ॥
gurmat chhodeh ujharh jaa-ee.
There are many, who forsake Guru’s teachings and go on to the strayed path.
ਕਈ ਬੰਦੇ ਐਸੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਤੇ ਤੁਰਨਾ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਪੈ ਅਵਾਈ ॥
manmukh raam na japai avaa-ee.
such self-willed careless people do not remember God.
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਅਵੈੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਪਦਾ।
ਪਚਿ ਪਚਿ ਬੂਡਹਿ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਕੂੜਿ ਕਾਲੁ ਬੈਰਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥
pach pach booDheh koorh kamaaveh koorh kaal bairaa-ee hay. ||15||
They get spiritually ruined by dealing only with materialism as if they are drowning in it; materialism is the enemy of spiritualism. ||15||
ਉਹ ਨਿਰਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਧੰਧਾ ਹੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੋ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਗੋਤੇ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਝੂਠੇ ਧੰਧੇ ਵਿਚ ਫਸੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਵੈਰਨ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧੫॥
ਹੁਕਮੇ ਆਵੈ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਜਾਵੈ ॥
hukmay aavai hukmay jaavai.
Everyone comes into this world by God’s will and departs from here by His will.
ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੀ (ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ (ਇਥੋਂ) ਚਲਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬੂਝੈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸੋ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥
boojhai hukam so saach samaavai.
One who understands the Divine command, merges in the eternal God.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਜੀਵ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਉਸ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੫॥
naanak saach milai man bhaavai gurmukh kaar kamaa-ee hay. ||16||5||
O’ Nanak, one who remembers God and lives by the Guru’s teachings, the eternal God becomes pleasing to his mind and he realizes Him. ||16||5||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ (ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ) ਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਣ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੬॥੫॥

Raag Maaroo, First Guru:
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ॥
aapay kartaa purakh biDhaataa.
God Himself is the Creator of the universe and He Himself pervades in it.
ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦਾ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਨਿ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਇ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥
jin aapay aap upaa-ay pachhaataa.
He Himself has created the world and has assumed the responsibility of taking care of it.
ਉਸ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜਗਤ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਦਾ ਫ਼ਰਜ਼ ਭੀ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਆਪੇ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਆਪੇ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਉਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧॥
aapay satgur aapay sayvak aapay sarisat upaa-ee hay. ||1||
God Himself is the true Guru and Himself the devotee; God Himself has created the universe. ||1||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸੇਵਕ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਰਚੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਆਪੇ ਨੇੜੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਦੂਰੇ ॥
aapay nayrhai naahee dooray.
God Himself is near to all and not far from anyone.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਹੈ ਕਿਸੇ ਤੋਂ ਭੀ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਬੂਝਹਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਪੂਰੇ ॥
boojheh gurmukh say jan pooray.
Those who understand this fact by following the Guru’s teachings, become spiritually perfect human beings.
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਇਹ ਭੇਦ ਸਮਝ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਅਭੁੱਲ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਗੁਰ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਏਹ ਵਡਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
tin kee sangat ahinis laahaa gur sangat ayh vadaa-ee hay. ||2||
Associating with them is always spiritually profitable; this is the glorious greatness of the company of the Guru. ||2||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਕਰਨ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਮਹੱਤਤਾ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਤੋਂ ਭੀ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਲਾਭ ਹੀ ਲਾਭ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਸੰਤ ਭਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੇਰੇ ॥
jug jug sant bhalay parabh tayray.
O’ God! throughout the ages, Your saints are virtuous and blessed.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਹਰੇਕ ਜੁਗ ਵਿਚ ਤੇਰੇ ਸੰਤ ਨੇਕ ਬੰਦੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਰਸਨ ਰਸੇਰੇ ॥
har gun gaavahi rasan rasayray.
They joyfully sing the praises of God with their tongues.
ਉਹ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਸਹਿਤ ਆਪਣੀ ਜੀਭ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਈਂ ਦਾ ਜੱਸ ਗਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਉਸਤਤਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਦਾਲਦੁ ਜਿਨ ਨਾਹੀ ਚਿੰਤ ਪਰਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
ustat karahi parhar dukh daalad jin naahee chint paraa-ee hay. ||3||
O’ God! they sing Your praises, get rid of all their sorrow and fear; they have no hope on anyone else. ||3||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਉਹ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਆਪਣੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਦਰਿੱਦ੍ਰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ; ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਦੀ ਆਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ, ॥੩॥
ਓਇ ਜਾਗਤ ਰਹਹਿ ਨ ਸੂਤੇ ਦੀਸਹਿ ॥
o-ay jaagat raheh na sootay deeseh.
They (saintly people) always remain alert to the onslaught of materialism, and are never seen engrossed in it.
ਉਹ (ਸੰਤ ਜਨ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਹੱਲਿਆਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਚੇਤ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਗ਼ਫ਼ਲਤ ਦੀ ਨੀਂਦ ਵਿਚ ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਸੁੱਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦੇ।
ਸੰਗਤਿ ਕੁਲ ਤਾਰੇ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਰੀਸਹਿ ॥
sangat kul taaray saach pareeseh.
Their company emancipates one’s many lineages, because they always preach eternal God’s Name to all.
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਕੁਲਾਂ ਤਾਰ ਦੇਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਸਭ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਵੰਡਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਕਲਿਮਲ ਮੈਲੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਤੇ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਓਇ ਰਹਹਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੪॥
kalimal mail naahee tay nirmal o-ay raheh bhagat liv laa-ee hay. ||4||
There is absolutely no filth of sins within them, they live a pure life and remain focused on devotional worship. ||4||
(ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਪਾਪਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ (ਰਤਾ ਭੀ) ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ, ਉਹ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਰੁੱਝੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੪॥
ਬੂਝਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
boojhhu har jan satgur banee.
O’ human beings, understand the teachings of the true Guru by remaining in the company of the devotees of God,
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀਹੋ! ਹਰੀ-ਜਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ (ਇਹ ਪੱਕੀ ਗੱਲ) ਸਮਝ ਲਵੋ,
ਏਹੁ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਸਾਸੁ ਹੈ ਦੇਹ ਪੁਰਾਣੀ ॥
ayhu joban saas hai dayh puraanee.
that this youth, breaths and body will ultimately become old and weak.
ਕਿ ਇਹ ਜੁਆਨੀ ਇਹ ਸੁਆਸ ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਸਭ ਪੁਰਾਣੇ ਹੋ ਜਾਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਆਜੁ ਕਾਲਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਈਐ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੁ ਜਪਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਧਿਆਈ ਹੇ ॥੫॥
aaj kaal mar jaa-ee-ai paraanee har jap jap ridai Dhi-aa-ee hay. ||5||
O’ mortal, sooner or later, we all will die, therefore always lovingly remember God and contemplate on His virtues within your heart. ||5||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ! ਥੋੜੇ ਹੀ ਸਮੇ ਵਿਚ ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਵੱਸ ਆ ਜਾਣਾ ਹੈ, (ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪੋ ਤੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰੋ ॥੫॥
ਛੋਡਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਕੂੜ ਕਬਾੜਾ ॥
chhodahu paraanee koorh kabaarhaa.
O mortal, renounce all the talk about the false, short lived material world.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ! ਨਿਰੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਛੱਡੋ।
ਕੂੜੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਕਾਲੁ ਉਛਾਹਾੜਾ ॥
koorh maaray kaal uchhaahaarhaa.
The fear of death viciously ruins the spiritual life of those who are only in love with Maya, the materialism.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਨਿਰਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਹੀ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਕੇ ਮਾਰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਕਤ ਕੂੜਿ ਪਚਹਿ ਮਨਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੁਹੁ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਚੈ ਪਚਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੬॥
saakat koorh pacheh man ha-umai duhu maarag pachai pachaa-ee hay. ||6||
The faithless cynics are spiritually ruined because of their love for materialism; their minds are filled with ego and are consumed by their sense of duality. ||6||
ਮਾਇਆ-ਵੇੜ੍ਹੇ ਜੀਵ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਹਉਮੈ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਦਵੈਤ ਦੇ ਰਸਤੇ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੬॥
