ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਚੀਨੈ ਕੋਈ ॥
gurmukh virlaa cheenai ko-ee.
But only a rare one who follows the Guru’s teachings recognizes this situation.
ਪਰ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਬੰਦਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਇਸ ਗਲ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਦੁਇ ਪਗ ਧਰਮੁ ਧਰੇ ਧਰਣੀਧਰ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਤਿਥਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
du-ay pag Dharam Dharay DharneeDhar gurmukh saach tithaa-ee hay. ||8||
Now in the age of duappar, the Dharma or faith is supported by two pillars only: but even then the Guru’s follower remains with the truth (God). ||8||
ਦੁਆਪੁਰ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਧਰਤੀ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਧਰਮ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਦੋ ਪੈਰ ਟਿਕਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਉਸੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਥੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਤੱਖ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥
ਰਾਜੇ ਧਰਮੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਪਰਥਾਏ ॥
raajay Dharam karahi parthaa-ay.
The kings act righteously only out of self-interest.
ਰਾਜੇ ਲੋਕ ਕਿਸੇ ਗ਼ਰਜ਼ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਧਰਮ ਕਮਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਆਸਾ ਬੰਧੇ ਦਾਨੁ ਕਰਾਏ ॥
aasaa banDhay daan karaa-ay.
With the hopes of worldly reward, they give to charities.
ਦੁਨੀਆਵੀ ਆਸਾਂ ਦੇ ਬੱਝੇ ਹੋਏ ਦਾਨ-ਪੁੰਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ।
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਥਾਕੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੯॥
raam naam bin mukat na ho-ee thaakay karam kamaa-ee hay. ||9||
They get weary of performing ritualistic deeds, but freedom from vices is not attained without lovingly remembering God’s Name. ||9||
ਦਾਨ-ਪੁੰਨ ਦੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਥੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦੀ ॥੯॥
ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਕਰਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਮੰਗਾਹੀ ॥
karam Dharam kar mukat mangaa-ee.
People living in the age of duappar are looking for emancipation by performing different faith rituals.
(ਦੁਆਪੁਰ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾਨ-ਪੁੰਨ ਤੀਰਥ ਆਦਿਕ) ਕਰਮ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਮੰਗਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਲਾਹੀ ॥
mukat padaarath sabad salaahee.
but the wealth of Naam, which liberates one from the vices, is received through the Guru’s divine word of God’s praises.
ਪਰ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਪਦਾਰਥ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਪਰਪੰਚੁ ਕਰਿ ਭਰਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥
bin gur sabdai mukat na ho-ee parpanch kar bharmaa-ee hay. ||10||
Yes, emancipation is not achieved without the Guru’s word; after creating the world, God has strayed it in doubt. ||10||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦੀ।ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਜਗਤ-ਰਚਨਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲੇਖੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ॥੧੦॥
ਮਾਇਆ ਮਮਤਾ ਛੋਡੀ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
maa-i-aa mamtaa chhodee na jaa-ee.
Love and attachment to Maya (materialism) cannot be abandoned.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਅਪਣੱਤ ਛੱਡੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਸੇ ਛੂਟੇ ਸਚੁ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਈ ॥
say chhootay sach kaar kamaa-ee.
Only those get liberated from the bonds of Maya who lovingly remember God.
ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਉਹੀ ਬੰਦੇ (ਇਸ ਮਮਤਾ ਦੇ ਪੰਜੇ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਜੇਹੜੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਰਤੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਸਿਉ ਬਣਿ ਆਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥
ahinis bhagat ratay veechaaree thaakur si-o ban aa-ee hay. ||11||
Those who always remain imbued with the love of devotional worship and reflect on divine virtues, are in intimate relationship with the Master-God. ||11||
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ (ਦੇ ਰੰਗ) ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜੇਹੜੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਬਣੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧੧॥
ਇਕਿ ਜਪ ਤਪ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਨਾਵਹਿ ॥
ik jap tap kar kar tirath naaveh.
Many people practice meditation, penance and bathe at the holy places.
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਬੰਦੇ ਐਸੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਜਪ ਤਪ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਤੇ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ।
ਜਿਉ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਵੈ ਚਲਾਵਹਿ ॥
ji-o tuDh bhaavai tivai chalaaveh.
O’ God! You make people do what You wish them to do.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਭੀ ਕੀਹ ਵੱਸ?) ਜਿਵੇਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਹੈ ਤੂੰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਰਾਹੇ ਤੋਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ।
ਹਠਿ ਨਿਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਅਪਤੀਜੁ ਨ ਭੀਜੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਕਿਨਿ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥
hath nigrahi apteej na bheejai bin har gur kin pat paa-ee hay. ||12||
Through obstinate rituals, the stubborn mind cannot get imbued with God’s love; without the Guru, who has ever attained honor in God’s presence? ||12||
ਹਠੀਲੇ ਕਰਮਕਾਂਡਾਂ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਨਾਂ-ਪਤੀਜਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਵਿਚ ਗਿੱਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਸ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ? ॥੧੨॥
ਕਲੀ ਕਾਲ ਮਹਿ ਇਕ ਕਲ ਰਾਖੀ ॥
kalee kaal meh ik kal raakhee.
When someone’s faith is based on just one pillar (worship), then that person is living in the age of Kalyug.
ਜੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਧਰਮ ਦੀ ਇਕੋ ਸਤਿਆ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਏ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ, ਮਾਨੋ, ਕਲਿਜੁਗ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਭਾਖੀ ॥
bin gur pooray kinai na bhaakhee.
But without the perfect Guru, no one has taught the proper way of devotional worship of God.
ਪਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਦੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਾਈ।
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਕੂੜੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਵਰਤਾਰਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥
manmukh koorh vartai vartaaraa bin satgur bharam na jaa-ee hay. ||13||
The self-willed person does deeds in falsehood and his doubt does not go away without following the teachings of the true Guru. ||13||
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਝੂਠ ਦੀ ਖੇਡ ਖੇਡਦਾ ਹੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਸਦਾ ਸੰਦੇਹ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ॥੧੩॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੁ ਸਿਰੰਦਾ ॥
satgur vayparvaahu sirandaa.
The true Guru is the embodiment of the carefree and independent Creator-God.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀਆਂ ਗ਼ਰਜ਼ਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਉੱਚਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਾ ਜਮ ਕਾਣਿ ਨ ਛੰਦਾ ਬੰਦਾ ॥
naa jam kaan na chhandaa bandaa.
The true Guru neither has the fear of demon of death, nor is he dependent upon human beings.
ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਜਮ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਨਹੀਂ, ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਮੁਥਾਜੀ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਸੋ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਸੰਤਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥
jo tis sayvay so abhinaasee naa tis kaal santaa-ee hay. ||14||
Whosoever follows the Guru’s teachings, becomes spiritually immortal and even the fear of death does not tortures him. ||14||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਨਾਸ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਤਾਂਦਾ ॥੧੪॥
ਗੁਰ ਮਹਿ ਆਪੁ ਰਖਿਆ ਕਰਤਾਰੇ ॥
gur meh aap rakhi-aa kartaaray.
The Creator-God has enshrined Himself in the Guru.
ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪ ਗੁਰੂ ਵਿਚ ਲੁਕਾ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕੋਟਿ ਅਸੰਖ ਉਧਾਰੇ ॥
gurmukh kot asaNkh uDhaaray.
The creator-God ferries millions of people across the world ocean of vices through the Guru.
ਉਹ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਕ੍ਰੋੜਾਂ ਤੇ ਅਸੰਖਾਂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚ ਡੁੱਬਣੋਂ) ਬਚਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਸਰਬ ਜੀਆ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਕਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥
sarab jee-aa jagjeevan daataa nirbha-o mail na kaa-ee hay. ||15||
The benefactor God is the support of life of the world, He is free form all fears and is totally immaculate.||15||
ਜਗਤ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਨਹੀਂ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਮਲੀਣਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ॥੧੫॥
ਸਗਲੇ ਜਾਚਹਿ ਗੁਰ ਭੰਡਾਰੀ ॥
saglay jaacheh gur bhandaaree.
Everyone begs for Naam from the Guru’s treasure.
ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਵਿਚੋਂ (ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ) ਮੰਗਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਆਪਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰੀ ॥
aap niranjan alakh apaaree.
God Himself is the immaculate, indescribable and infinite.
ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਆਪ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਤੋਂ ਉਤਾਂਹ ਹੈ ਅਲੱਖ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜਾਚੈ ਮੈ ਦੀਜੈ ਸਾਚੁ ਰਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੪॥
naanak saach kahai parabh jaachai mai deejai saach rajaa-ee hay. ||16||4||
O God, Nanak says the truth, and begs You to bestow this gift that I may always live in Your true will. ||16||4||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇਰਾ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਦੇਹ ॥੧੬॥੪॥
ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Raag Maaroo, First Guru:
ਸਾਚੈ ਮੇਲੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
saachai maylay sabad milaa-ay.
Those whom the eternal God united with Him through the Guru’s word,
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜਿਆ,
ਜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਣਾ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥
jaa tis bhaanaa sahj samaa-ay.
and when it pleased Him, they got absorbed in a state of spiritual poise.
ਅਤੇ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਾ, ਉਹ ਬੰਦੇ ਅਡੋਲ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਗਏ।
ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਜੋਤਿ ਧਰੀ ਪਰਮੇਸਰਿ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧॥
taribhavan jot Dharee parmaysar avar na doojaa bhaa-ee hay. ||1||
O’ brother, the supreme God has established His Divine light in the entire universe; there is none other like Him. ||1||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਰਮੇਸਰ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਭਵਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾ ਰੱਖੀ ਹੈ; ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਰਗਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਜਿਸ ਕੇ ਚਾਕਰ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ॥
jis kay chaakar tis kee sayvaa.
The devotees engage in the devotional worship of God whose servants they are,
ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਉਹ ਸੇਵਕ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ-ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਸਬਦਿ ਪਤੀਜੈ ਅਲਖ ਅਭੇਵਾ ॥
sabad pateejai alakh abhayvaa.
the indescribable and unfathomable God is pleased when the devotees sing His praises through the Guru’s word.
ਜਦੋਂ (ਭਗਤ ਜਨ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਅਲੱਖ ਅਤੇ ਅਭੇਵ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਇਸ ਘਾਲ ਤੇ) ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਭਗਤਾ ਕਾ ਗੁਣਕਾਰੀ ਕਰਤਾ ਬਖਸਿ ਲਏ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
bhagtaa kaa gunkaaree kartaa bakhas la-ay vadi-aa-ee hay. ||2||
The Creator-God instills divine virtues in His devotees; such is His greatness, that He Himself forgave the sins of his devotees. ||2||,
ਕਰਤਾਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਆਤਮਕ ਗੁਣ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਫ਼ ਕਰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਐਹੋ ਜੇਹੀ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮਹਾਨਤਾ। ॥੨॥
ਦੇਦੇ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਸਾਚੇ ॥
dayday tot na aavai saachay.
The treasurers of the eternal God never fall short while bestowing bounties,
(ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦਾਤਾਂ) ਦੇ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ (ਭੰਡਾਰਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ) ਘਾਟਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ,
ਲੈ ਲੈ ਮੁਕਰਿ ਪਉਦੇ ਕਾਚੇ ॥
lai lai mukar pa-uday kaachay.
but the false mortals keep denying, even while receiving these gifts.
ਪਰ ਥੋੜ੍ਹ-ਵਿਤੇ ਜੀਵ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਲੈ ਲੈ ਕੇ (ਭੀ) ਮੁੱਕਰ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ.
ਮੂਲੁ ਨ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਨ ਰੀਝਹਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
mool na boojheh saach na reejheh doojai bharam bhulaa-ee hay. ||3||
They do not understand the gracious nature of God, the very source of their life, they do not long for focusing on Him and go astray in duality and doubt. ||3||
(ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ) ਮੂਲ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਦੇ ਖੁਲ੍ਹ-ਦਿਲੇ ਸੁਭਾਉ) ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦੇ। ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਨ ਲਈ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਰੀਝ ਪੈਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਆਸਰੇ ਦੀ ਝਾਕ ਵਿਚ ਭਟਕ ਕੇ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੩॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਗਿ ਰਹੇ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤੀ ॥
gurmukh jaag rahay din raatee.
Those who follow the Guru’s teachings, always remain alert to the love for Maya,
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਲੋਂ ਸੁਚੇਤ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਸਾਚੇ ਕੀ ਲਿਵ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਜਾਤੀ ॥
saachay kee liv gurmat jaatee.
they have learnt the way to remain focused on God through the Guru’s teachings.
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜੋੜਨ ਦੀ ਵਿਧੀ ਉਨ੍ਹਾ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਜਾਣ ਲਈ ਹੈ
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਸੋਇ ਰਹੇ ਸੇ ਲੂਟੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਬਤੁ ਭਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੪॥
manmukh so-ay rahay say lootay gurmukh saabat bhaa-ee hay. ||4||
O’ brother, the self-willed people remain engrossed in the love for Maya and are plundered of their divine virtues; but the Guru’s followers keep their spiritual wealth intact. ||4||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਪੂੰਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਬਚਾ ਕੇ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ। ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਗ਼ਾਫ਼ਿਲ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਰਮਾਇਆ ਲੁਟਾ ਬੈਠਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੪॥
ਕੂੜੇ ਆਵੈ ਕੂੜੇ ਜਾਵੈ ॥
koorhay aavai koorhay jaavai.
A self-willed person comes into this world because of his love for Maya (material world) and leaves this world engrossed in the love for Maya.
ਉਹ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਗ੍ਰਸੀ ਹੀ ਜੰਮਦੀ ਹੈ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸੀ ਹੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਤੋਂ ਚਲੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਕੂੜੇ ਰਾਤੀ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥
koorhay raatee koorh kamaavai.
Imbued with falsehood (materialism) he deals only in falsehood.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੀ ਹੋਈ, ਉਹ ਇਥੇ ਸਦਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਵਣਜ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਸੇ ਦਰਗਹ ਪੈਧੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੫॥
sabad milay say dargeh paiDhay gurmukh surat samaa-ee hay. ||5||
Those who realize God through the divine word, are honored in His presence; those who follow the Guru’s teachings, their mind remains merged in God. ||5||
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਆਦਰ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਸੁਰਤ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿਚ) ਟਿਕੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਕੂੜਿ ਮੁਠੀ ਠਗੀ ਠਗਵਾੜੀ ॥ ਜਿਉ ਵਾੜੀ ਓਜਾੜਿ ਉਜਾੜੀ ॥
koorh muthee thagee thagvaarhee. ji-o vaarhee ojaarh ujaarhee.
Just as an orchard in the wilderness gets ruined, similarly a soul-bride enticed by Maya is cheated out of her divine virtues by the gang of robbers, the vices.
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕੋਈ ਫੁਲਵਾੜੀ ਕਿਤੇ ਉਜਾੜ ਵਿਚ (ਨਿਖਸਮੀ ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ) ਉੱਜੜ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਤਿਵੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਮੋਹੀ ਹੋਈ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ ਠੱਗ ਠੱਗ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਸਾਦਿ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਸਰਿਐ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੬॥
naam binaa kichh saad na laagai har bisri-ai dukh paa-ee hay. ||6||
Without God’s Name, nothing seems tasteful to her; forsaking God, she endures sufferings. ||6||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਗੈਰ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਝ ਭੀ ਸੁਆਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭੁੱਲਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਹੀ ਪਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਭੋਜਨੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਆਘਾਈ ॥
bhojan saach milai aaghaa-ee.
One who is blessed with God’s Name for his spiritual sustenance, gets satiated from worldly desires.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਭੋਜਨ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਵਲੋਂ) ਰੱਜ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਮ ਰਤਨੁ ਸਾਚੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
naam ratan saachee vadi-aa-ee.
One who is blessed with the jewel-like precious Naam, he receives everlasting glory both here and the hereafter.
ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਮ-ਰਤਨ ਲੱਭ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ) ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਚੀਨੈ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਸੋਈ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੭॥
cheenai aap pachhaanai so-ee jotee jot milaa-ee hay. ||7||
One who reflects on his own self, realizes God and his soul merges into the prime soul (God). ||7||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਪੜਤਾਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਹਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
