ਧ੍ਰਿਗੰਤ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸਨੇਹੰ ਧ੍ਰਿਗ ਸਨੇਹੰ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਬਾਂਧਵਹ ॥
Dharigant maat pitaa sanayhaN Dharig sanayhaN bharaat baaNDhvah.
Verflucht ist zu viel liebevolle Verbundenheit für Mutter und Vater, ebenso verflucht ist zu viel Zuneigung und Zuneigung für die eigenen Geschwister und Verwandten.
ਧ੍ਰਿਗ ਸ੍ਨੇਹੰ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਬਿਲਾਸ ਸੁਤਹ ॥
Dharig sneh-aN banitaa bilaas sutah.
Cursed is too much attachment to the joys of family life and with one's spouse and children.
ਧ੍ਰਿਗ ਸ੍ਨੇਹੰ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਾਰਥ ਕਹ ॥
Dharig sneh-aN garihaarath kah.
Attachment to one’s household and possessions is also bad.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗ ਸ੍ਨੇਹ ਸਤੵਿ ਸੁਖਯੰ ਬਸੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕਹ ॥੨॥
saaDhsang sneh sati-yaN sukh-yaN basant naankah. ||2||
O’ Nanak, eternal is the love for the company of saints, and those (who love the saint's company) live a peaceful life. ||2||
ਮਿਥੵੰਤ ਦੇਹੰ ਖੀਣੰਤ ਬਲਨੰ ॥
mith-yant dayhaN kheenant balanaN.
This body of ours is perishable and its energy is waning with time.
ਬਰਧੰਤਿ ਜਰੂਆ ਹਿਤੵੰਤ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
barDhant jaroo-aa hit-yant maa-i-aa.
One’s love for materialism keeps increasing with the advancing age.
ਅਤੵੰਤ ਆਸਾ ਆਥਿਤੵ ਭਵਨੰ ॥
at-yant aasaa aathit-y bhavanaN.
Even though human being is like a guest in the house (world), but his desire for worldly things keeps increasing.
ਗਨੰਤ ਸ੍ਵਾਸਾ ਭੈਯਾਨ ਧਰਮੰ ॥
ganant savasaa bhaiyaan DharmaN.
The righteous judge’s dreadful demons keep counting the mortal’s breaths.
ਪਤੰਤਿ ਮੋਹ ਕੂਪ ਦੁਰਲਭੵ ਦੇਹੰ ਤਤ ਆਸ੍ਰਯੰ ਨਾਨਕ ॥
patant moh koop durlabha-y dayhaN tat aasar-yaN naanak.
O’ Nanak, this difficult to obtain human body remains fallen in the pit of love for Maya; in this situation, one should take the support of God,
ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ॥੩॥
gobind gobind gobind gopaal kirpaa. ||3||
because only the mercy of God, the master and sustainer of the world, can save us. ||3||
ਕਾਚ ਕੋਟੰ ਰਚੰਤਿ ਤੋਯੰ ਲੇਪਨੰ ਰਕਤ ਚਰਮਣਹ ॥
kaach kotaN rachant to-yaN laypanaN rakat charamneh.
This fragile body-fortress is made up of water (semen), plastered with (mother’s) blood and wrapped in skin.
ਨਵੰਤ ਦੁਆਰੰ ਭੀਤ ਰਹਿਤੰ ਬਾਇ ਰੂਪੰ ਅਸਥੰਭਨਹ ॥
navant du-aaraN bheet rahitaN baa-ay roopaN asthambhnah.
It has nine gates, but no doors and is supported by pillars of the life breaths.
ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਨਾਮੰ ਨਹ ਸਿਮਰੰਤਿ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਜਾਨੰਤਿ ਅਸਥਿਰੰ ॥
gobind naamaN nah simrant agi-aanee jaanant asthiraN.
The spiritually ignorant human beings deem this body as permanent and don’t remember God’s Name.
ਦੁਰਲਭ ਦੇਹ ਉਧਰੰਤ ਸਾਧ ਸਰਣ ਨਾਨਕ ॥
durlabh dayh uDhrant saaDh saran naanak.
O’ Nanak, the difficult to obtain human body of those people is redeemed who seek the refuge of the Guru,
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰੇ ਜਪੰਤਿ ॥੪॥
har har har har har haray japant. ||4||
because they always remember God with adoration. ||4||
ਸੁਭੰਤ ਤੁਯੰ ਅਚੁਤ ਗੁਣਗੵੰ ਪੂਰਨੰ ਬਹੁਲੋ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲਾ ॥
subhant tu-yaN achut gunga-yaN pooranaN bahulo kirpaalaa.
O’ the eternal and all pervading God, You are the knower of virtuous and You are very kind and are beautifully pervading everywhere.
ਗੰਭੀਰੰ ਊਚੈ ਸਰਬਗਿ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
gambheeraN oochai sarbag apaaraa.
O’ God! You are unfathomable, highest of the high, omniscient and infinite.
ਭ੍ਰਿਤਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਿਅੰ ਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮ ਚਰਣੰ ॥
bhariti-aa pari-aN bisraam charnaN.
You are the beloved of Your devotees, they find inner peace in Your immaculate Name.
ਅਨਾਥ ਨਾਥੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਣੰ ॥੫॥
anaath naathay naanak sarnaN. ||5||
O’ the Support of the support less, Nanak seeks Your shelter. ||5||
ਮ੍ਰਿਗੀ ਪੇਖੰਤ ਬਧਿਕ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰੇਣ ਲਖੵ ਆਵਧਹ ॥
marigee paykhant baDhik par-haarayn lakh-y aavDhah.
On spotting a deer, a hunter takes aim and tries to hurt it with his weapon,
ਅਹੋ ਜਸੵ ਰਖੇਣ ਗੋਪਾਲਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਰੋਮ ਨ ਛੇਦੵਤੇ ॥੬॥
aho jas-y rakhayn gopaalah naanak rom na chhayd-ytay. ||6||
but wow: O’ Nanak, whom God protects, he is not hurt even a bit. ||6||
ਬਹੁ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਤਾ ਬਲਵੰਤ ਕਾਰੀ ਸੇਵੰਤ ਸੂਰਾ ਚਤੁਰ ਦਿਸਹ ॥
baho jatan kartaa balvant kaaree sayvant sooraa chatur disah.
If there is a very resourceful and very powerful person surrounded on all four sides by brave servants to look after him;
ਬਿਖਮ ਥਾਨ ਬਸੰਤ ਊਚਹ ਨਹ ਸਿਮਰੰਤ ਮਰਣੰ ਕਦਾਂਚਹ ॥
bikham thaan basant oochah nah simrant marnaN kadaaNcheh.
he may dwell at a difficult to reach high place, where he may never even think of death:
ਹੋਵੰਤਿ ਆਗਿਆ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਪੁਰਖਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀਟੀ ਸਾਸ ਅਕਰਖਤੇ ॥੭॥
hovant aagi-aa bhagvaan pukhah naanak keetee saas akarkhatay. ||7||
O’ Nanak, if God so commands then even the weakest person like an ant may take out such a person’s life breaths. ||7||
ਸਬਦੰ ਰਤੰ ਹਿਤੰ ਮਇਆ ਕੀਰਤੰ ਕਲੀ ਕਰਮ ਕ੍ਰਿਤੁਆ ॥
sabdaN rataN hitaN ma-i-aa keertaN kalee karam kritu-aa.
The best deeds to do in kalyug are to love the Guru’s word, to be kind and compassionate and to sing God’s praise; one who does these deeds,
ਮਿਟੰਤਿ ਤਤ੍ਰਾਗਤ ਭਰਮ ਮੋਹੰ ॥
mitant tatraagat bharam mohaN.
his inner doubts and emotional attachments are erased,
ਭਗਵਾਨ ਰਮਣੰ ਸਰਬਤ੍ਰ ਥਾਨੵਿੰ ॥
bhagvaan ramnaN sarbatar thaani-yaN.
and he experiences God pervading everywhere.
ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟ ਤੁਯੰ ਅਮੋਘ ਦਰਸਨੰ ਬਸੰਤ ਸਾਧ ਰਸਨਾ ॥
darisat tu-yaN amogh darsanaN basant saaDh rasnaa.
O’ God! Your Name is always on the tongue of saints, Your gracious glance and blessed vision is always fruitful.
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਿਅੰ ਜਾਪੁ ਜਪਨਾ ॥੮॥
har har har haray naanak pari-aN jaap japnaa. ||8||
O’ Nanak! say: O’ God! remembering You with adoration is very pleasing to Your saints. ||8||
ਘਟੰਤ ਰੂਪੰ ਘਟੰਤ ਦੀਪੰ ਘਟੰਤ ਰਵਿ ਸਸੀਅਰ ਨਖੵਤ੍ਰ ਗਗਨੰ ॥
ghatant roopaN ghatant deepaN ghatant rav sasee-ar nakh-yatar gaganaN.
Perishable is beauty and all the islands, the sun, the moon and the stars in the sky are also perishable
ਘਟੰਤ ਬਸੁਧਾ ਗਿਰਿ ਤਰ ਸਿਖੰਡੰ ॥
ghatant basuDhaa gir tar sikhaNdaN.
The earth, the high mountains and the trees are perishable.
ਘਟੰਤ ਲਲਨਾ ਸੁਤ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਹੀਤੰ ॥
ghatant lalnaa sut bharaat heetaN.
Also perishable are one’s spouse, children, siblings and loved ones.
ਘਟੰਤ ਕਨਿਕ ਮਾਨਿਕ ਮਾਇਆ ਸ੍ਵਰੂਪੰ ॥
ghatant kanik maanik maa-i-aa savroopaN.
Similarly perishable are gold, pearls and different forms of Maya.
ਨਹ ਘਟੰਤ ਕੇਵਲ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਅਚੁਤ ॥
nah ghatant kayval gopaal achut.
Only non perishable (unchanging) is the eternal God.
ਅਸਥਿਰੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਧ ਜਨ ॥੯॥
asthiraN naanak saaDh jan. ||9||
O’ Nanak! God’s saints are also immortal. ||9||
ਨਹ ਬਿਲੰਬ ਧਰਮੰ ਬਿਲੰਬ ਪਾਪੰ ॥
nah bilamb DharmaN bilamb paapaN.
O’ mortal, not delaying in practicing righteousness and avoiding sinful acts,
ਦ੍ਰਿੜੰਤ ਨਾਮੰ ਤਜੰਤ ਲੋਭੰ ॥
darirh-aaNt naamaN tajant lobhaN.
steadfastly enshrining God’s Name in the heart and renouncing greed,
ਸਰਣਿ ਸੰਤੰ ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਨਾਸੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੰ ਧਰਮ ਲਖ੍ਣ ॥
saran santaN kilbikh naasaN paraaptaN Dharam lakh-yin.
and destroying all sinful thoughts in the refuge of the Saints; these attributes of righteousness:
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਹ ਸੁਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਮਾਧਵਹ ॥੧੦॥
naanak jih suparsan maaDhvah. ||10||
are received by the one, O’ Nanak, on whom God becomes totally pleased. ||10||
ਮਿਰਤ ਮੋਹੰ ਅਲਪ ਬੁਧੵੰ ਰਚੰਤਿ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਬਿਨੋਦ ਸਾਹੰ ॥
mirat mohaN alap buDh-yaN rachant banitaa binod saahaN.
A person of shallow intellect remains engrossed in the love of perishable things, and the pleasurable plays of a woman.
ਜੌਬਨ ਬਹਿਕ੍ਰਮ ਕਨਿਕ ਕੁੰਡਲਹ ॥
jouban bahikaram kanik kundlah.
The youth, energy, gold earrings,
ਬਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਮੰਦਿਰ ਸੋਭੰਤਿ ਬਸਤ੍ਰਾ ਇਤੵੰਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਬੵਾਪਿਤੰ ॥
bachitar mandir sobhant bastaraa it-yant maa-i-aa bi-yaapitaN.
astonishing mansions, beautiful dresses and in so many other ways, this Maya keeps afflicting him.
ਹੇ ਅਚੁਤ ਸਰਣਿ ਸੰਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਭੋ ਭਗਵਾਨਏ ਨਮਹ ॥੧੧॥
hay achut saran sant naanak bho bhagvaana-ay namah. ||11||
O’ Nanak! say, O’ the eternal God! O the support of the saints! O’ the Master of the earth! I humbly bow to You. ||11||
ਜਨਮੰ ਤ ਮਰਣੰ ਹਰਖੰ ਤ ਸੋਗੰ ਭੋਗੰ ਤ ਰੋਗੰ ॥
janmaN ta marnaN harkhaN ta sogaN bhogaN ta rogaN.
If there is birth, then there is death, if there is pleasure, then there is pain and if there are indulgences in worldly pleasures, then there are afflictions as well.
ਊਚੰ ਤ ਨੀਚੰ ਨਾਨੑਾ ਸੁ ਮੂਚੰ ॥
oonchaN ta neechaN naanHaa so moochaN.
If someone is in a high position today, tomorrow he may be reduced to low ranks, and if someone is poor today, tomorrow he may become great.
