One who stops his mind wandering after Maya and keeps it controlled,
he enshrines the eternal God’s Name within his mind. ||4||
The exciting and intoxicating worldly entertainments of that person cease,
who has accepted the Guru's teachings and remains focused on God.
That person has extinguished the fire of his worldly desires by visualizing God and bathing (reflecting) in the nectar of God’s Name.
But only that person understands this mystery who is very fortunate. ||5||
One who follows the Guru’s teachings, gets rid of the wandering of his mind.
he always remains alert to worldly allurements and keeps his mind focused on the eternal God.
uch a person knows only one God as the benefactor of inner peace and no one else, and his life becomes immaculate by lovingly remembering Him. ||6||
By reflecting on God’s virtues through the Guru’s word, one’s mind turns toward selfless service,
and he earns the merits of worship, penance and self-discipline by subduing ego.
When the Guru recites the Divine word to him, then he is liberated from the love for Maya and vices while still living and doing his worldly chores,
and he enjoys true inner peace through righteous living. ||7||
That person understands that God is the only benefactor of inner peace and destroyer of sorrow,
therefore, except remembering God, he does not think of any other useful deed.
He surrenders his body, mind and wealth before God,
Nanak says, such a person has tasted the supreme relish of God’s Name.
Raag Prabhati, First Guru:
One may perform yogic exercises for cleaning of intestines, elevating the breaths to the tenth gate (the supreme spiritual state of mind), or such exercises as inhaling, holding and exhaling breaths,
but without the Guru’s teachings, he doesn’t attain any spiritual understanding; lost in doubts he spiritually deteriorates and drowns in the world-ocean of vices.
Such a spiritually ignorant person, filled with the dirt of evil thoughts, keeps amassing and washing this dirt but this filth never departs from the mind;
Just as one is misled by the juggler’s illusions, similarly a spiritually ignorant one is fooled by these yogic exercises which are useless without God‘s Name. ||1||
O’ God, for me the merits of six religious deeds described in the Hindu scripturesare in remembering Your immaculate Name.
O’ God! You are the ocean of virtues and I am full of vices. ||1||Pause||
To keep running after Maya is a useless deed led by evil intellect.
The fool does not understand the righteous deeds, but tries to present himself as a wise and great person.
The cravings of the self-willed person are always for Maya and he is ruined by his own empty religious words.
Even the ablution of such a merciless evil person is a fraud and his outwardly piety and decoration (to look holy) is an empty show. ||2||
The intellect of the mind is false and actions inspired by it leads to useless disputes.
Such a person with false intellect is full of arrogance and he cannot enjoy thetaste of union with the Master-God.
Without remembering God’s Name, the taste of doing all other deeds is insipid.
One gets ruined by associating with evil persons because their speech is harmful like poison and their own life is a waste. ||3||
O’ people, strayed by illusions, do not engage in spiritual deterioration in false pursuits.
The inner peace is attained forever only by following the true Guru’s teachings
Without following the true Guru’s teachings, no one has ever attained freedom from the love for Maya and vices,
and people keep spiritually deteriorating and remain in the cycle of births and deaths. ||4||
This body is an embodiment of three modes (vice, virtue and power) of Maya
and it remains affected by sorrow and suffering.
Therefore lovingly remember that God who has no mother or father;
by doing so the yearning for Maya and self-conceit vanishes from within. ||5||
O’ brother, wherever I look, I visualize that same God pervading there.
The liberation from the love for materialism and vices is not attained without meeting the true Guru and without following his teachings.
To enshrine the eternal God in the heart is the only sublime deed.
All other deeds are hypocritical actions and worship through these deeds ultimately causes spiritual ruin. ||6||
When one gets rid of duality, only then he understands the Guru’s Divine word,
and only then he deems the same God within himself and outside in the entire universe.
This is the true intellect that the Guru’s Divine word is the most superior,
and the one who (forsakes the Guru’s teachings and) remains in duality is disgraced so much as if ashes are smeared on his forehead. ||7||
To sing God’s praises is the most sublime deed and to live by the Guru's teachings is the most sublime effort.
O brother, join the congregation of saintly people and reflect upon God’s virtues and divine wisdom.
One who controls his mind, consider him as the one who remains free from the love for Maya and vices while performing his worldly chores.
O’ Nanak, that person realizes God through His gracious glance. ||8||3||
