ਪ੍ਰਭਾਤੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਦਖਣੀ ॥

Raag Prabhati,First Guru, Dakhnee:
ਗੋਤਮੁ ਤਪਾ ਅਹਿਲਿਆ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੁ ਲੁਭਾਇਆ ॥
gotam tapaa ahili-aa istaree tis daykh indar lubhaa-i-aa.
Seeing Ahalya, the wife of sage Gautam, the god Indra was overtaken by lust,
ਗੋਤਮ ਇਕ ਪ੍ਰਸਿੱਧ ਤਪੀ ਸੀ, ਅਹਿੱਲਿਆ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਸੀ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਰਾਜਾ ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਮਸਤ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ।
ਸਹਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਚਿਹਨ ਭਗ ਹੂਏ ਤਾ ਮਨਿ ਪਛੋਤਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
sahas sareer chihan bhag hoo-ay taa man pachhotaa-i-aa. ||1||
but he (Indra) repented in his mind when a thousand marks of disgrace appeared on his body due to Gautam’s curse. ||1||
(ਗੋਤਮ ਦੇ ਸਰਾਪ ਨਾਲ) (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਇੰਦਰ ਦੇ) ਸਰੀਰ ਉਤੇ ਹਜ਼ਾਰ ਭਗਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨ ਬਣ ਗਏ, ਤਦੋਂ ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਛੁਤਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
ਕੋਈ ਜਾਣਿ ਨ ਭੂਲੈ ਭਾਈ ॥
ko-ee jaan na bhoolai bhaa-ee.
O’ brothers, no one knowingly goes astray and makes mistakes.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਜੀਵ ਜਾਣ ਬੁੱਝ ਕੇ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ ।
ਸੋ ਭੂਲੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ਬੂਝੈ ਜਿਸੈ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
so bhoolai jis aap bhulaa-ay boojhai jisai bujhaa-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Only that one gets strayed whom God Himself misleads (to reform his conduct), and only that person understands the righteous path whom God causes to understand. ||1||Pause||
ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਹ) ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਸਮਝ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਤਿਨਿ ਹਰੀ ਚੰਦਿ ਪ੍ਰਿਥਮੀ ਪਤਿ ਰਾਜੈ ਕਾਗਦਿ ਕੀਮ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥
tin haree chand parithmee pat raajai kaagad keem na paa-ee.
That Hari Chand, who was like the king of the entire earth, did so many acts of charity that their worth cannot be written on paper.
ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇ ਰਾਜੇ ਉਸ ਰਾਜਾ ਹਰੀ ਚੰਦ ਨੇ (ਇਤਨੇ ਦਾਨ-ਪੁੰਨ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਿ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ) ਮੁੱਲ ਕਾਗਜ਼ ਉਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਅਉਗਣੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਤ ਪੁੰਨ ਕਰੇ ਕਿਉ ਕਿਉ ਨੇਖਾਸਿ ਬਿਕਾਈ ॥੨॥
a-ugan jaanai ta punn karay ki-o ki-o naykhaas bikaa-ee. ||2||
If he had known that even giving charity with ego is a sin, then why would he give so much charity and why would he have to be sold in the market? ||2||
ਜੇ ਉਹ ਦਾਨ-ਪੁੰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾੜਾ ਕੰਮ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਤਾਂ ਦਾਨ ਪੁੰਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੀ ਕਿਉਂ? ਤੇ ਕਿਉਂ ਮੰਡੀ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਕਦਾ? ॥੨॥
ਕਰਉ ਅਢਾਈ ਧਰਤੀ ਮਾਂਗੀ ਬਾਵਨ ਰੂਪਿ ਬਹਾਨੈ ॥
kara-o adhaa-ee Dhartee maaNgee baavan roop bahaanai.
The god Vishnu took the form of a pigmy brahmin and asked for two and a half steps of land from the king Bal.
(ਵਿਸ਼ਨੂੰ ਨੇ) ਵਉਣੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਿਚ (ਆ ਕੇ) ਬਹਾਨੇ ਨਾਲ ਰਾਜਾ ਬਲਿ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਢਾਈ ਕਰਮ ਧਰਤੀ (ਦਾ ਦਾਨ ਆਪਣੀ ਕੁਟੀਆ ਬਣਾਣ ਲਈ) ਮੰਗਿਆ।
ਕਿਉ ਪਇਆਲਿ ਜਾਇ ਕਿਉ ਛਲੀਐ ਜੇ ਬਲਿ ਰੂਪੁ ਪਛਾਨੈ ॥੩॥
ki-o pa-i-aal jaa-ay ki-o chhalee-ai jay bal roop pachhaanai. ||3||
If the egoistic king Bal had recognized god Vishnu, then why would he have to be deceived and sent into the nether region? ||3||
ਜੇ ਬਲਿ ਰਾਜਾ ਵਉਣੇ ਰੂਪ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣ ਲੈਂਦਾ, ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਕਿਉਂ ਠੱਗਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਉਂ ਪਾਤਾਲ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਂਦਾ? ॥੩॥
ਰਾਜਾ ਜਨਮੇਜਾ ਦੇ ਮਤੀ ਬਰਜਿ ਬਿਆਸਿ ਪੜ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਇਆ ॥
raajaa janmayjaa day mateeN baraj bi-aas parhHaa-i-aa.
The sage Vyaas had taught king Janmeja and forbade him from committing certain mistakes,
ਬਿਆਸ ਰਿਸ਼ੀ ਨੇ ਮੱਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਰਾਜਾ ਜਨਮੇਜੈ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਾਇਆ ਤੇ ਵਰਜਿਆ (ਕਿ ਉਸ ਅਪੱਛਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਹ ਲਿਆਈਂ।
ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਕਰਿ ਜਗ ਅਠਾਰਹ ਘਾਏ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਨ ਚਲੈ ਚਲਾਇਆ ॥੪॥
tiniH kar jag athaarah ghaa-ay kirat na chalai chalaa-i-aa. ||4||
but committing the same mistakes, he performed the sacred feast, killed eighteen brahmins and learned that preordained destiny can’t be erased. ||4||
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਅਠਾਰਾਂ ਜੱਗ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਅਠਾਰਾਂ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਮਾਰ ਦਿੱਤੇ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਅੱਤ ਬਰੀਕ ਕਪੜਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਆਈ ਅੱਧ-ਨਗਨ ਅਪੱਛਰਾ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਹੱਸ ਪਏ ਸਨ)। ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਫਲ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਮਿਟਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੪॥
ਗਣਤ ਨ ਗਣੀ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣਾ ਬੋਲੀ ਭਾਇ ਸੁਭਾਈ ॥
ganat na ganeeN hukam pachhaanaa bolee bhaa-ay subhaa-ee.
O’ God, I do not count my merits, I try to understand Your command and absorbed in Your love, I utter Your virtues.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਕੋਈ ਲੇਖਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਗਿਣਦਾ, ਮੈਂ ਤਾਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਣ ਦਾ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਤੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿਚ ਮਗਨ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਉਚਾਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਤੁਧੈ ਸਲਾਹੀ ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੫॥
jo kichh vartai tuDhai salaaheeN sabh tayree vadi-aa-ee. ||5||
I only sing Your praises and whatever is happening, it is all Your glory. ||5||
ਮੈਂ ਤਾਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਤੇਰੀ ਤਾਕਤ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਹੂਰ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਲਿਪਤੁ ਲੇਪੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਸਦਾ ਰਹੈ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥
gurmukh alipat layp kaday na laagai sadaa rahai sarnaa-ee.
One who follows the Guru’s teachings, remains detached from worldly attractions and is never affected by Maya, and he always remains in God’s refuge.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਉਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਓਟ ਫੜਦਾ ਹੈ
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਆਗੈ ਚੇਤੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਦੁਖਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਪਛੁਤਾਈ ॥੬॥
manmukh mugaDh aagai chaytai naahee dukh laagai pachhutaa-ee. ||6||
But the self-willed fool does not remember God in life, and regrets when afflicted with sorrow. ||6||
ਪਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮੂਰਖ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ, ਜਦੋਂ ਦੁੱਖ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਹੱਥ ਮਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਆਪੇ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਏ ਕਰਤਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਏਹ ਰਚਨਾ ਰਚੀਐ ॥
aapay karay karaa-ay kartaa jin ayh rachnaa rachee-ai.
God who has created this creation, Himself does and gets everything done.
ਜਿਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਜਗਤ-ਰਚਨਾ ਰਚੀ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਜੀਅਹੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੇ ਪੈ ਪਚੀਐ ॥੭॥
har abhimaan na jaa-ee jee-ahu abhimaanay pai pachee-ai. ||7||
O’ God, the egotistical pride doesn’t go away from our mind and we are ruined by falling prey to self-conceit. ||7||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਸਾਡੇ ਦਿਲਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ। ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਾਂ ॥੭॥
ਭੁਲਣ ਵਿਚਿ ਕੀਆ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ਕਰਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਨ ਭੁਲੈ ॥
bhulan vich kee-aa sabh ko-ee kartaa aap na bhulai.
The Creator-God Himself never makes any mistake but everyone created by Him keeps making mistakes.
ਕਰਤਾਰ ਆਪ ਕਦੇ ਗ਼ਲਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਪਰ ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਜੋ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ ਭੁੱਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ਕੋ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਅਘੁਲੈ ॥੮॥੪॥
naanak sach naam nistaaraa ko gur parsaad aghulai. ||8||4||
O’ Nanak, emancipation is attained only by remaining focused on God’s Name, only a rare person escapes making mistakes by the Guru’s grace. ||8||4||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆਂ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਭੁੱਲਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚ ਸਕੀਦਾ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਜੀਵ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥੪॥

Raag Prabhati,First Guru:
ਆਖਣਾ ਸੁਨਣਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰੁ ॥
aakh-naa sunnaa naam aDhaar.
One who has made uttering and listening to God’s Name as the support of his spiritual life,
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸੁਣਨ ਸੁਣਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਬਣਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ,
ਧੰਧਾ ਛੁਟਕਿ ਗਇਆ ਵੇਕਾਰੁ ॥
DhanDhaa chhutak ga-i-aa vaykaar.
his worthless entanglements in worldly affairs are gone.
ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਦੀ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਦੌੜ-ਭੱਜ ਮੁੱਕ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਉ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥
ji-o manmukh doojai pat kho-ee.
Just as a self-willed person, caught in duality, loses his honor,
ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਬੰਦਾ ਦਵੈਤ-ਭਾਵ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਪਣੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਗਵਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਮੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥੧॥
bin naavai mai avar na ko-ee. ||1||
I can’t even think of any support other than God. ||1||
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤਾਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਆਸਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੁੱਝਦਾ ॥੧॥
ਸੁਣਿ ਮਨ ਅੰਧੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਗਵਾਰ ॥
sun man anDhay moorakh gavaar.
O’ blind in the love for Maya, foolish and idiotic mind, listen, ਹੇ
(ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ) ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਨ! ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨ! ਹੇ ਅਮੋੜ ਮਨ! ਸੁਣ,
ਆਵਤ ਜਾਤ ਲਾਜ ਨਹੀ ਲਾਗੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਬੂਡੈ ਬਾਰੋ ਬਾਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
aavat jaat laaj nahee laagai bin gur boodai baaro baar. ||1|| rahaa-o.
one who is not ashamed of running after Maya, without following the Guru’steachings, he keeps drowning in the love for Maya again and again. ||1||Pause||
ਜਿਸ ਬੰਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਦੌੜ-ਭੱਜ ਕਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਸ਼ਰਮ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜਿਆਂ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਡੁੱਬਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਇਸੁ ਮਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਬਿਨਾਸੁ ॥
is man maa-i-aa mohi binaas.
This mind spiritually deteriorates in the love for materialism.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ (ਫਸ ਕੇ) ਇਸ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਧੁਰਿ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਕਹੀਐ ਕਾਸੁ ॥
Dhur hukam likhi-aa taaN kahee-ai kaas.
But when it has been so preordained, then to whom can we say anything?
ਜਦ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਜਾ ਹੀ ਐਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਲਿਖੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਅੱਗੇ ਪੁਕਾਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਏ ?
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਚੀਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੈ ਕੋਈ ॥
gurmukh virlaa cheenHai ko-ee.
By following the Guru’s teachings, only a rare person understands this,
ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਬੰਦਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਹੂਨਾ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੨॥
naam bihoonaa mukat na ho-ee. ||2||
that no one is freed from the love for Maya without lovingly remembering God’s Name. ||2||
ਕਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ ॥੨॥
ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਡੋਲੈ ਲਖ ਚਉਰਾਸੀ ॥
bharam bharam dolai lakh cha-uraasee.
One wanders lost, staggering and stumbling through millions of incarnations.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਭਟਕ ਭਟਕ ਕੇ ਜੀਵ ਚੌਰਾਸੀ ਲੱਖ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਧੱਕੇ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਬੂਝੇ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਫਾਸੀ ॥
bin gur boojhay jam kee faasee.
Without understanding the Guru’s teachings, one remains caught in the noose of the demon (fear) of death.
ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਤੇ ਜਮ ਦੀ ਫਾਹੀ (ਇਸ ਦੇ ਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਪਈ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ)।
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੂਆ ਖਿਨੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਊਭਿ ਪਇਆਲਿ ॥
ih manoo-aa khin khin oobh pa-i-aal.
Every instant, this mind keeps tossing between the extremes of hope and despair as if wavering between the sky and the nether regions.
(ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਅਸਰ ਵਿਚ) ਇਹ ਮਨ ਕਦੇ ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਦੇ ਪਾਤਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਡਿੱਗ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਛੂਟੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਲਿ ॥੩॥
gurmukh chhootai naam samHaal. ||3||
But one who follows the Guru’s teachings is released from the mind’s ups and downs by remembering God’s Name with adoration. ||3||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਰਾਹ ਤੇ ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਬਚ ਨਿਕਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਆਪੇ ਸਦੇ ਢਿਲ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
aapay saday dhil na ho-ay.
One whom God Himself inspires to remember Him, it takes no time for that person to realize Him.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਨ ਲਈ) ਸੱਦਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਦਿਆਂ ਚਿਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ,
ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਸਹਿਲਾ ਜੀਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥
sabad marai sahilaa jeevai so-ay.
Through the Guru’s word, that person escapes from the effects of the love for Maya and lives a peaceful life.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਲੋਂ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਮਾਇਆ ਉਸ ਉਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦੀ) ਤੇ ਉਹ ਬੜਾ ਸੌਖਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੋਝੀ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
bin gur sojhee kisai na ho-ay.
Without following the Guru’s teachings, no one attains understanding aboutrighteous living,
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ,
ਆਪੇ ਕਰੈ ਕਰਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੪॥
aapay karai karaavai so-ay. ||4||
and God Himself does and gets everything done. ||4||
ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਕਰਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਝਗੜੁ ਚੁਕਾਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ॥
jhagarh chukhaavai har gun gaavai.
One whose strife for the love of Maya is removed by God, sings His praises,
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ ਲੰਮਾ ਗੇੜ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮੁਕਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥
pooraa satgur sahj samaavai.
the perfect true Guru helps such a person to merge in a state of spiritual poise.
ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਰਾਖਾ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਡੋਲਤ ਤਉ ਠਹਰਾਵੈ ॥
ih man dolat ta-o thehraavai.
Only then this mind of a person wobbling in the love for Maya becomes stable,
ਤਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਭਟਕਣੋਂ ਹਟ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਚੁ ਕਰਣੀ ਕਰਿ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥੫॥
sach karnee kar kaar kamaavai. ||5||
when such a person does the true deed of lovingly remembering God. ||5||
ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਕਰਤੱਬ ਜਾਣ ਕੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜੂਠਾ ਕਿਉ ਸੁਚਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
antar joothaa ki-o such ho-ay.
One whose mind is polluted with vices, how can he become pure?
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ) ਮੈਲਾ ਹੋ ਚੁਕਾ ਹੋਵੇ, ਉਹ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?
ਸਬਦੀ ਧੋਵੈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਕੋਇ ॥
sabdee Dhovai virlaa ko-ay.
Only a rare person washes off the dirt of vices from his mind through the Guru’s divine word.
ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ (ਮਨ ਨੂੰ) ਸਾਫ਼ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕੋਈ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥
gurmukh ko-ee sach kamaavai.
Only a rare follower of the Guru amasses the true wealth of Naam,
ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਹੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣਾ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਵੈ ॥੬॥
aavan jaanaa thaak rahaavai. ||6||
and keeps his wandering mind under control. ||6||
ਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਕ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
