In its uniqueness of form and content, the Guru Granth Sahib contains not only the writings of Sikh Gurus but also of the saints and poems of several religious and cultural backgrounds, evidencing the inclusiveness and universalism in the message of Sikhism.
This scripture is the Sikhs’ guide as to how to lead a spiritual and regimented life since it emphasizes God’s name, selfless service, and devotion to the One Creator. The Guru Granth Sahib is not only quite a religious scripture or, indeed, inspiration but excerpt guidance for many millions of Sikhs all over the world, promoting values of compassion, humility, and social justice.
ਮੇਰਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਛੋਡੀਐ ਭਾਈ ਹੋਈਐ ਸਭ ਕੀ ਧੂਰਿ ॥
mayraa tayraa chhodee-ai bhaa-ee ho-ee-ai sabh kee Dhoor.
O’ brother, we should give up our sense of “mine and thine” and we should become humble like the dust of the feet of all.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਵਿਤਕਰਾ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਭਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ ਬਣ ਜਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਭੈ ਪਇਐ ਮਨੁ ਵਸਿ ਹੋਆ ਹਉਮੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਇ ॥
bhai pa-i-ai man vas ho-aa ha-umai sabad jalaa-ay.
Yes, it is only when the revered fear of God wells up, one’s ego is burnt away through the Guru’s word and the mind comes under control.
ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਭਉ ਉਪਜਿਆਂ ਹੀ, ਤੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨਾਲ ਸਾੜ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਮਨ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਸੋ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਹੇ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੨॥
naanak je gurmukh karahi so parvaan hai jo naam rahay liv laa-ay. ||2||
O’ Nanak, because the Guru’s followers always remain attuned to Naam, so whatever they do is acceptable in God’s presence. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਕਬੂਲ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਬ੍ਰਿਤੀ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨॥
ਜੀਉ ਡਰਤੁ ਹੈ ਆਪਣਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਉ ਕਰੀ ਪੁਕਾਰ ॥
jee-o darat hai aapnaa kai si-o karee pukaar.
My soul is afraid of sufferings in the world; to whom may I beg for help?
ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਭੈ-ਭੀਤ ਹੋਈ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ, ਕੀਹਦੇ ਕੋਲ ਮੈਂ ਮਿੰਨਤਾਂ ਕਰਾਂ?
ਜਪਿ ਮਨ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਦਾ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥
jap man sat naam sadaa sat naam.
O’ my mind, always meditate on the Name of eternal God.
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਦਾ ਜਪਿਆ ਕਰ।
ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਗਾਈਐ ਆਤਮ ਰੰਗਿ ॥
thaakur gaa-ee-ai aatam rang.
We should sing the praises of God from the core of our heart.
ਦਿਲ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ।

ਜਿਨਿ ਉਪਾਈ ਮੇਦਨੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਪਿ ॥੨॥
jin upaa-ee maydnee naanak so parabh jaap. ||2||
O’ Nanak, meditate on that God who has created this universe. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਰਚੀ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰ ॥੨॥
ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਪੰਚ ਤਤੁ ਬਿਸਥਾਰਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਧਾਤੂ ਪੰਚ ਆਪਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
har aapay panch tat bisthaaraa vich Dhaatoo panch aap paavai.
God Himself has created the expanse from the five basic elements (air, fire, water, earth, and ether), and has infused the five impulses (sight, speech, relish, touch and sexual desire) in the five elements.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਪੰਜ ਤੱਤਾਂ ਦਾ ਜਗਤ-ਖਿਲਾਰਾ ਖਿਲਾਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਤੱਤਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪੰਜੇ ਬੋਧ ਸ਼ਕਤੀਆਂ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
