Guru Granth Sahib was compiled in 1604 by Guru Arjan Dev, the fifth Sikh Guru. It comprises mainly the Punjabi language and Gurmukhi script, with hymns from Sikh Gurus, namely Guru Nanak Dev, Guru Angad Dev, Guru Amar Das, Guru Ram Das, and Guru Tegh Bahadur. It also includes writings from other spiritual figures of that time, therefore it has given its universal message in thiseltas giving its universal message and unity of humanity.
This scripture is considered to be the living entity of the Gurus themselves and is reverenced as the eternal, divine guide of Sikhs. It is housed in places of worship exclusively built for Sikhs called Gurdwaras and treated with very high regard by devotees. The Guru Granth Sahib is most definitely much more than a religious scripture; it serves not only as spiritual guidance and ethical teachings but also of musical inspiration based on poetic and melodious compositions called Shabads or hymns.
ਨਾਨਕ ਪੂਜੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਦੇਵਾ ॥੬॥
naanak poojai har har dayvaa. ||6||
O’ Nanak, devotee always worships the Omnipresent God.||6||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਭਗਤ ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਦੇਵ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਜਦਾ ਹੈ
ਜਿਹ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਆਰੋਗ ਕੰਚਨ ਦੇਹੀ ॥
jih parsaad aarog kanchan dayhee.
By whose grace, you have a healthy, beautiful body;
ਜਿਸ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਦੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਸੋਨੇ ਵਰਗਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਰੋਆ ਜਿਸਮ ਹੈ,
ਅਪੁਨੇ ਦਾਸ ਕਉ ਆਪਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੈ ॥
apunay daas ka-o aap kirpaa karai.
To His servant, He Himself bestows His Grace,
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਸ ਸੇਵਕ ਉਤੇ ਆਪ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸੰਤ ਕਾ ਨਿੰਦਕੁ ਪਰਮੇਸੁਰਿ ਮਾਰਾ ॥
sant kaa nindak parmaysur maaraa.
The slanderer of the Saint is accursed by God.
ਸੰਤ ਦਾ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਰੱਬ ਵਲੋਂ ਫਿਟਕਾਰਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਵਰਤੀਆ ॥੭॥
naanak jo tis bhaavai so vartee-aa. ||7||
O’ Nanak, whatever pleases Him comes to pass. ||7||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹੀ ਕੁਝ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਬਿਸਰੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਦੀਆ ॥
so ki-o bisrai jin sabh kichh dee-aa.
Why forget Him, who has given us everything?
ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਕਿਉਂ ਭੁੱਲ ਜਾਏ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ,
ਜਨ ਆਵਨ ਕਾ ਇਹੈ ਸੁਆਉ ॥
jan aavan kaa ihai su-aa-o.
Such a devotee of God comes to the world so that,
ਅਜਿਹੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਆਉਣ ਦਾ ਇਹੀ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਹੈ,
ਟੂਟੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਸਫਲ ਪੂਰਨ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਕਾਮ ॥
tootay banDhan baho bikaar safal pooran taa kay kaam.
His bonds with vices are broken, and his affairs are settled successfully.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਟੁੱਟ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਕਾਰਜ ਰਾਸਿ ਆ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਆਖਿਆ ਸੁਖਾਵੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਤਿਨਾ ਮੁਹ ਭਲੇਰੇ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਦਯਿ ਗਾਲੇ ॥
jinaa satgur kaa aakhi-aa sukhaavai naahee tinaa muh bhalayray fireh da-yi gaalay.
Those who are not pleased with the Words of the True Guru – their faces are cursed, and they wander around, condemned by God.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਬਚਨ ਚੰਗੇ ਨਹੀ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਭਰਿਸ਼ਟੇ ਹੋਏ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਖਸਮ ਵਲੋਂ ਫਿਟਕਾਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
