The Guru Granth Sahib consists of shabads (hymns) in Gurmukhi script, primarily in Punjabi, along with some hymns in other Indian languages like Braj Bhasha and Sanskrit. It comprises the compositions by Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism, and writings attributed to other Bhakti movement saints and Sikh Gurus up to Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Guru. The Granth is organized by musical measures, called Ragas, into sections, these sections then being subdivided into hymns called Padas.
Sikhs hold the Guru Granth Sahib to be the last, sovereign authority and spiritual guide in Sikhism, laying emphasis on equality, unity, and devotion to God. It resides ceremoniously in Sikh Temples called Gurdwaras, where it is kept with due respect and reverence. It has a recital every day in congregational prayers, Nitnems, and at all engagements and events. It is, in fact, a spring of inspiration, wisdom, and spiritual solace for millions of Sikhs spread all over the world.
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸਹਸਾ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਚੂਕੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
an-din sahsaa kaday na chookai bin sabdai dukh paa-ay.
Such a person always remains in doubt which never goes away and without reflecting on the Guru’s word, he remains miserable.
ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਕਿਸੇ ਵੇਲੇ ਭੀ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਵਹਿਮ ਦੁਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੇ, ਸ਼ਬਦ (ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲੈਣ ਤੋਂ) ਬਿਨਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਐਸੀ ਮਰਨੀ ਜੋ ਮਰੈ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਨ ਮਰਨਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥
aisee marnee jo marai bahur na marnaa ho-ay. ||1||
One who dies such a death, that one doesn’t have to die again and again. ||1||
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੱਚੀ ਮੌਤ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਫਿਰ ਮਰਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ ॥੧॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਆਪਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੋ ਹੋਇ ॥
gurmukh jis no aap karay so ho-ay.
Only the person blessed by God can become a Guru’s true follower.
ਪਰ ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ (ਇਸ ਜੋਗ) ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਾਚੇ ਹੋਰੁ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਜਾਸਹਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਸਭੁ ਖੋਇ ॥੨॥
bin saachay hor salaahnaa jaaseh janam sabh kho-ay. ||2||
But, if instead of the True (God), you keep praising somebody else, then you would go (from here) without your honor. ||2||
ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਨੂੰ ਸਲਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਰਹੇਂਗਾ, ਤਾਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਨਮ ਗਵਾ ਕੇ (ਇਥੋਂ) ਜਾਵੇਂਗਾ ॥੨॥
ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣਾ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਚੂਕੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥
aavan jaanaa kaday na chookai maa-i-aa moh pi-aaraa.
The result is that the cycle of birth and death of a person, who loves material things, never ends.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਗੇੜ ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੁੱਕਦਾ।
ਤੂ ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਸਰਬ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਹਮ ਪਾਥਰ ਤਰੇ ਤਰਾਇਆ ॥
too dukh bhanjan sarab sukh-daata ham paathar taray taraa-i-aa.
You are the destroyer of sorrows and Bestower of all comforts; we the stone-hearted sinners can swim across and be saved, only if You help us.
ਤੂੰ ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਖ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ। ਅਸੀਂ ਕਠੋਰ-ਚਿੱਤ ਹਾਂ, ਤੇਰੇ ਤਰਾਏ ਹੋਏ ਹੀ ਤਰ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਬਾਬਾ ਰੋਈਐ ਬਾਜੀ ਹੈ ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੋ ॥
naanak kis no baabaa ro-ee-ai baajee hai ih sansaaro.
O’ Nanak, this world is merely a play, therefore it is pointless to cry over somebody’s death.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਇਹ ਜਗਤ ਇਕ ਖੇਡ ਹੈ, ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ ਮਰਨ ਤੇ ਰੋਣਾ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੈ।
ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਕਟੀਐ ਸਚੜੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥
bharam maa-i-aa vichahu katee-ai sachrhai naam samaa-ay.
Then all the doubts of Maya are removed from within, and the person merges in the True Name of Eternal God.
(ਤਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਈ ਭਲੀ ਪਰੀਤਿ ਜਿਤੁ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸੇਤੀ ਪਤਿ ਰਹੈ ॥੨॥
naanak saa-ee bhalee pareet jit saahib saytee pat rahai. ||2||
O Nanak, sublime is that love, which preserves my honor with God. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਉਹੋ ਹੀ ਚੰਗਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਖਸਮ ਨਾਲ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਬਣੀ ਰਹੇ ॥੨॥
