salok mehlaa 1. Shalok, erster Guru:
raatee kaal ghatai din kaal. The time span of life diminishes with the passing of every day and night,
ਛਿਜੈ ਕਾਇਆ ਹੋਇ ਪਰਾਲੁ ॥ chhijai kaa-i-aa ho-ay paraal. the body is wearing out and becomes weak like straw;
vartan varti-aa sarab janjaal. all one’s dealings with the world become entanglements for him.
bhuli-aa chuk ga-i-aa tap taal. One is so lost in these entanglements that he forgets the way to perform devotional worship.
anDhaa jhakh jhakh pa-i-aa jhayr. Blinded by constantly dealing in the worldly pursuits, he falls in some long strife,
pichhai roveh li-aaveh fayr. and when he dies, his relatives cry and wonder how they can bring him back to life.
bin boojhay kichh soojhai naahee. But without understanding the righteous way of life, they don’t know what to do,
mo-i-aa roNhi roNday mar jaaNheeN. The person who died is gone and those left behind cry for the dead and suffer.
naanak khasmai ayvai bhaavai. But O’ Nanak, this is the will of the Master-God
ਸੇਈ ਮੁਏ ਜਿਨ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥੧॥ say-ee mu-ay jin chit na aavai. ||1|| Actually those are spiritually dead in whose heart God has not manifested. ||1||
mehlaa 1. First Guru:
ਮੁਆ ਪਿਆਰੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਮੁਈ ਮੁਆ ਵੈਰੁ ਵਾਦੀ ॥ mu-aa pi-aar pareet mu-ee mu-aa vair vaadee. When one dies, his love and affection for his relatives also dies and so does his hatred which was the source of disputes;
vann ga-i-aa roop vinsi-aa dukhee dayh rulee. All the beauty and charm of one’s body vanishes and his suffering body also perishes (by being burnt or buried).
kithhu aa-i-aa kah ga-i-aa kihu na see-o kihu see. Then his friends and relatives wonder from where he came and where he has gone; he was like this and not that; they highlight his virtues, and ignore his
man mukh galaa go-ee-aa keetaa chaa-o ralee. They ponder over it and sometimes openly say that (the dead) person had enjoyed a good life.
naanak sachay naam bin sir khur pat paatee. ||2|| But: O’ Nanak, (people may say anything,) without having remembered God’s Name, consider one’s acclaimed honor torn away from head to toe. ||2||
pa-orhee. Pauree:
amrit naam sadaa sukh–daata antay ho-ay sakhaa-ee. The ambrosial nectar of Naam always bestows inner peace and only Naam becomes our companion in the end.
baajh guroo jagat ba-uraanaa naavai saar na paa-ee. But, without following the Guru’s teachings, the world is becoming insane because it does not appreciate the worth of Naam.
satgur sayveh say parvaan jinH jotee jot milaa-ee. Those who follow the Guru’s teachings and have firmly focused their mind on God, the supreme light, are approved in God’s presence.
so saahib so sayvak tayhaa jis bhaanaa man vasaa-ee. becomes just like Him.
ਆਪਣੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਕਹੁ ਕਿਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਅੰਧਾ ਅੰਧੁ ਕਮਾਈ ॥ aapnai bhaanai kaho kin sukh paa-i-aa anDhaa anDh kamaa-ee. O’ brother, tell me, who has attained inner peace by following one’s own will? an ignorant person acts only in an ignorant manner;
bikhi-aa kaday hee rajai naahee moorakh bhukh na jaa-ee. A foolish person is never satiated with Maya, his craving for it never goes away.
Everybody attached to duality (Maya) is ruined; no one understands this without following the Guru’s teachings.
satgur sayvay so sukh paa-ay jis no kirpaa karay rajaa-ee. ||20|| One upon whom God, the master of His will, bestows grace, follows the Guru’s teachings and receives inner peace. ||20||
salok mehlaa 1. Shalok, First Guru:
saram Dharam du-ay naankaa jay Dhan palai paa-ay. O’ Nanak, people think that if they get worldly wealth, they can have both honor and righteousness.
so Dhan mitar na kaaNdhee-ai jit sir chotaaN khaa-ay. However, that wealth should not be considered as our friend, which leads to suffering (by indulging in vices or even at the hands of others).
jin kai palai Dhan vasai tin kaa naa-o fakeer. Those who possess worldly wealth are called paupers (if they are spiritually poor).
jinH kai hirdai too vaseh tay nar gunee gaheer. ||1|| O’ God, those are oceans of virtues in whose hearts You are enshrined. ||1||
mehlaa 1. First Guru:
dukhee dunee sahayrhee-ai jaa-ay ta lageh dukh. The worldly wealth is amassed by enduring much pain and if it is lost, even then one feels miserable.
naanak sachay naam bin kisai na lathee bhukh. O’ Nanak, no one’s craving ever gets satisfied without the eternal God’s Name.
roopee bhukh na utrai jaaN daykhaaN taaN bhukh. By looking at beauty, the longing for it does not get satisfied; the more we look at it, the more this desire multiplies.
jaytay ras sareer kay taytay lageh dukh. ||2|| As many are the pleasures of the body, that many are the troubles for it. ||2||
mehlaa 1. First Guru:
anDhee kammee anDh man man anDhai tan anDh. As we commit foolish deeds without thinking, our mind also becomes ignorant, and when the mind is ignorant, the body’s senses become ignorant and indulge in vices.
chikarh laa-i-ai ki-aa thee-ai jaaN tutai pathar banDh. When a dam of stones breaks, then what can be achieved by applying mud to it?
banDh tutaa bayrhee nahee naa tulhaa naa haath. When a dam gives way, the water’s depth becomes unfathomable, then neither the boat nor the raft remains under one’s control; similarly when the strong support of Naam is broken, then nothing can help anyone.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਣੁ ਕੇਤੇ ਡੁਬੇ ਸਾਥ ॥੩॥ naanak sachay naam vin kaytay dubay saath. ||3|| O’ Nanak, without God’s Name multitudes of human beings drown in vices. ||3||
mehlaa 1. First Guru:
lakh man su-inaa lakh man rupaa lakh saahaa sir saah. One may have hundred thousand tons of gold and hundred thousand tons of silver and may be more wealthy than hundred thousand such wealthy people
ਲਖ ਲਸਕਰ ਲਖ ਵਾਜੇ ਨੇਜੇ ਲਖੀ ਘੋੜੀ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹ ॥ lakh laskar lakh vaajay nayjay lakhee ghorhee paatisaah. one may be a monarch commanding armies of hundreds of thousands of soldiers equipped with spears, horses, and military orchestras;
jithai saa-ir langh–naa agan paanee asgaah. but where the world-ocean of fire and unfathomable water of vices is to be crossed,
kanDhee dis na aavee Dhaahee pavai kahaah. there the shore of this ocean is not visible and only the pitiful cries can be heard,
naanak othai jaanee-ahi saah kay-ee paatisaah. ||4|| O’ Nanak, there it is judged as to who truly is rich with wealth of Naam and who is the king (having Maya which cannot save from drowning in the world ocean of vices). ||4||
pa-orhee. Pauree:
ਇਕਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਗਲੀਂ ਜੰਜੀਰ ਬੰਦਿ ਰਬਾਣੀਐ ॥ iknHaa galeeN janjeer band rabaanee-ai. Many people are so engrossed in materialism, as if there are chains of the love for Maya around their necks as if they are locked up in God’s prison;
baDhay chhuteh sach sach pachhaanee-ai. If they happen to recognize the eternal God, only then can they be released from the chains of Maya by lovingly remembering God.
