ਬੁਢਾ ਹੋਆ ਸੇਖ ਫਰੀਦੁ ਕੰਬਣਿ ਲਗੀ ਦੇਹ ॥
budhaa ho-aa saykh fareed kamban lagee dayh.
Sheikh Farid has now grown old; his body has started trembling.
ਸ਼ੇਖ਼ ਫਰੀਦ (ਹੁਣ) ਬੁੱਢਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ, ਸਰੀਰ ਕੰਬਣ ਲੱਗ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਜੇ ਸਉ ਵਰ੍ਹ੍ਹਿਆ ਜੀਵਣਾ ਭੀ ਤਨੁ ਹੋਸੀ ਖੇਹ ॥੪੧॥
jay sa-o vareh-aa jeevnaa bhee tan hosee khayh. ||41||
Even if he lives for a hundred years, his body would still turn to dust in the end. ||41||
ਜੇ ਸਉ ਵਰ੍ਹੇ ਭੀ ਜੀਊਣਾ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਏ, ਤਾਂ ਭੀ (ਅੰਤ ਨੂੰ) ਸਰੀਰ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਇਗਾ ॥੪੧॥
ਫਰੀਦਾ ਬਾਰਿ ਪਰਾਇਐ ਬੈਸਣਾ ਸਾਂਈ ਮੁਝੈ ਨ ਦੇਹਿ ॥
fareedaa baar paraa-i-ai baisnaa saaN-ee mujhai na deh.
O’ Farid, say, O’ Master-God, don’t make me dependent on others for anything,
ਹੇ ਫਰੀਦ! ਹੇ ਸਾਂਈਂ! (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ) ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਰਾਏ ਬੂਹੇ ਤੇ ਬੈਠਣ ਨਾਹ ਦੇਈਂ;
ਜੇ ਤੂ ਏਵੈ ਰਖਸੀ ਜੀਉ ਸਰੀਰਹੁ ਲੇਹਿ ॥੪੨॥
jay too ayvai rakhsee jee-o sareerahu layhi. ||42||
and if You are going to keep me like this (going to make me dependent on others) then please take the life out from my body ||42||
ਪਰ ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਰੱਖਣਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਮੁਥਾਜ ਬਣਾਣਾ ਹੈ) ਤਾਂ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਜਿੰਦ ਕੱਢ ਲੈ ॥੪੨॥
ਕੰਧਿ ਕੁਹਾੜਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਘੜਾ ਵਣਿ ਕੈ ਸਰੁ ਲੋਹਾਰੁ ॥
kanDh kuhaarhaa sir van kai sar lohaar.
One roams in the worldly forest collecting the worldly wealth like a blacksmith with an axe on the shoulder and a water-pot on the head collecting the wood,
ਲੁਹਾਰ ਘੜਾ ਸਿਰ ਤੇ ਚੁਕ ਕੇ ਅਤੇ ਮੋਢੇ ਤੇ ਕੁਹਾੜਾ ਰਖ ਕੇ ਰੁਖ ਦੇ ਦੁਆਲੇ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ
ਫਰੀਦਾ ਹਉ ਲੋੜੀ ਸਹੁ ਆਪਣਾ ਤੂ ਲੋੜਹਿ ਅੰਗਿਆਰ ॥੪੩॥
fareedaa ha-o lorhee saho aapnaa too lorheh angi-aar. ||43||
O’ Farid, I am searching for my Master-God in this worldly forest, (and O’ man, like the blacksmith) you are looking for the charcoal. ||43||
ਹੇ ਫਰੀਦ! ਮੈਂ ਤਾਂ (ਇਸ ਜਗਤ-ਰੂਪ ਜੰਗਲ ਵਿਚ) ਆਪਣੇ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਲੱਭ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ, ਤੇ, ਤੂੰ, (ਹੇ ਜੀਵ! ਲੋਹਾਰ ਵਾਂਗ) ਕੋਲੇ ਲੱਭ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ ॥੪੩॥
ਫਰੀਦਾ ਇਕਨਾ ਆਟਾ ਅਗਲਾ ਇਕਨਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਲੋਣੁ ॥
fareedaa iknaa aataa aglaa iknaa naahee lon.
O’ Farid, there are some who have an abundance of flour (worldly wealth), but many people’s wealth is not even like a pinch of salt.
ਹੇ ਫਰੀਦ! ਕਈ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਪਾਸ ਆਟਾ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਪਦਾਰਥ) ਬਹੁਤ ਹੈ, ਇਕਨਾਂ ਪਾਸ ਇਤਨਾ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਿਤਨਾ ਆਟੇ ਵਿਚ ਲੂਣ ਪਾਈਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅਗੈ ਗਏ ਸਿੰਞਾਪਸਨਿ ਚੋਟਾਂ ਖਾਸੀ ਕਉਣੁ ॥੪੪॥
agai ga-ay sinjaapsan chotaaN khaasee ka-un. ||44||
but hereafter all would be identified by their deeds (worldly wealth will have no bearing) and only then they would know who is going to be punished. ||44||
ਪਰ ਅੱਗੇ ਜਾ ਕੇ (ਅਮਲਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ) ਪਛਾਣ ਹੋਵੇਗੀ ਕਿ ਮਾਰ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੪੪॥
ਪਾਸਿ ਦਮਾਮੇ ਛਤੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਭੇਰੀ ਸਡੋ ਰਡ ॥
paas damaamay chhat sir bhayree sado rad.
Even those, for whom drums were beaten, over whose heads canopies were waved, for whom bugles were played and bards sang songs of their praise,
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਾਸ ਧੌਂਸੇ ਸਨ, ਸਿਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਛਤਰ ਝੁਲਦੇ ਸਨ, ਤੂਤੀਆਂ ਵੱਜਦੀਆਂ ਸਨ, ਅਤੇ ਉਸਤਤੀ ਦੇ ਛੰਦ ਗਾਂਵੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਸਨ,
ਜਾਇ ਸੁਤੇ ਜੀਰਾਣ ਮਹਿ ਥੀਏ ਅਤੀਮਾ ਗਡ ॥੪੫॥
jaa-ay sutay jeeraan meh thee-ay ateemaa gad. ||45||
upon death, they all have gone to sleep in the graveyards and joined the supportless orphans. ||45||
ਉਹ ਭੀ ਆਖ਼ਰ ਮਸਾਣਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਸੁੱਤੇ, ਤੇ ਯਤੀਮਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਜਾ ਰਲੇ ॥੪੫॥
ਫਰੀਦਾ ਕੋਠੇ ਮੰਡਪ ਮਾੜੀਆ ਉਸਾਰੇਦੇ ਭੀ ਗਏ ॥
fareedaa kothay mandap maarhee-aa usaarayday bhee ga-ay.
O’ Farid, even those who had built houses, mansions and lofty buildings for themselves, also departed from the world.
ਹੇ ਫਰੀਦ! ਘਰ ਮਹਲ ਮਾੜੀਆਂ ਉਸਾਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਭੀ ਚਲੇ ਗਏ।
ਕੂੜਾ ਸਉਦਾ ਕਰਿ ਗਏ ਗੋਰੀ ਆਇ ਪਏ ॥੪੬॥
koorhaa sa-udaa kar ga-ay goree aa-ay pa-ay. ||46||
They dealt in false business of earning worldly wealth by dishonest means and were put to sleep in graves empty handed like all others. ||46||
ਉਹ ਝੂਠਾ ਸੌਦਾ ਕਰਕੇ (ਅੰਤ ਖ਼ਾਲੀ ਹੱਥ) ਕਬਰੀਂ ਜਾ ਪਏ ॥੪੬॥
ਫਰੀਦਾ ਖਿੰਥੜਿ ਮੇਖਾ ਅਗਲੀਆ ਜਿੰਦੁ ਨ ਕਾਈ ਮੇਖ ॥
fareedaa khintharh maykhaa aglee-aa jind na kaa-ee maykh.
O’ Farid, this body is like a patched jacket which has been repaired with many stitches, but the life itself has no stitches and it can’t be repaired,
ਹੇ ਫਰੀਦ! ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਰੂਪੀ ਗੋਦੜੀ ਨੂੰ ਕਈ ਟਾਂਕੇ ਲੱਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਜਿੰਦ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਭੀ ਟਾਂਕਾ ਨਹੀਂ ,
ਵਾਰੀ ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣੀ ਚਲੇ ਮਸਾਇਕ ਸੇਖ ॥੪੭॥
vaaree aapo aapnee chalay masaa-ik saykh. ||47||
therefore, even the great sheikhs and highly spiritual people departed from here when it was their turn. ||47||
ਇਸ ਲਈ ਵੱਡੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਅਖਵਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਸ਼ੇਖ਼ ਆਦਿਕ ਸਭ ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣੀ ਵਾਰੀ ਇਥੋਂ ਤੁਰ ਗਏ ॥੪੭॥
ਫਰੀਦਾ ਦੁਹੁ ਦੀਵੀ ਬਲੰਦਿਆ ਮਲਕੁ ਬਹਿਠਾ ਆਇ ॥
fareedaa duhu deevee balandi-aa malak bahithaa aa-ay.
O’ Farid, the angel of death came and sat before a person even when that person’s both eyes were wide open,
ਹੇ ਫਰੀਦ! ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੋਹਾਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੋਹਾਂ ਦੀਵਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਜਗਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ) ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਫ਼ਰਿਸਤਾ ਬੰਦੇ ਪਾਸ ਆ ਬੈਠਾ,
ਗੜੁ ਲੀਤਾ ਘਟੁ ਲੁਟਿਆ ਦੀਵੜੇ ਗਇਆ ਬੁਝਾਇ ॥੪੮॥
garh leetaa ghat luti-aa deevrhay ga-i-aa bujhaa-ay. ||48||
he conquered that person’s fortress-like body, took control of his mind and departed after extinguishing the lamps of his eyes. ||48||
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਰੀਰ-ਰੂਪ ਕਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਉਤੇ ਕਬਜ਼ਾ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ, ਜਿੰਦ ਕਾਬੂ ਕਰ ਲਈ ਤੇ (ਇਹ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ) ਦੀਵੇ ਬੁਝਾ ਗਿਆ ॥੪੮॥
ਫਰੀਦਾ ਵੇਖੁ ਕਪਾਹੈ ਜਿ ਥੀਆ ਜਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਥੀਆ ਤਿਲਾਹ ॥
fareedaa vaykh kapaahai je thee-aa je sir thee-aa tilaah.
Look O’ Farid, what happens to cotton, it is ginned, and what happens to the sesame seeds, they bear blows of the mallet on their heads to extract oil,
ਹੇ ਫਰੀਦ! ਵੇਖ! ਜੋ ਹਾਲਤ ਕਪਾਹ ਦੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ (ਵੇਲਣੇ ਵਿਚ ਵੇਲੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ), ਜੋ ਤਿਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਤੇ ਬੀਤਦੀ ਹੈ (ਕੋਹਲੂ ਵਿਚ ਪੀੜੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ),
ਕਮਾਦੈ ਅਰੁ ਕਾਗਦੈ ਕੁੰਨੇ ਕੋਇਲਿਆਹ ॥
kamaadai ar kaagdai kunnay ko-ili-aah.
what happens to the sugar cane, the paper, the clay pot and the charcoal;
ਜੋ ਕਮਾਦ, ਕਾਗਜ਼, ਮਿੱਟੀ ਦੀ ਹਾਂਡੀ ਅਤੇ ਕੋਲਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਵਰਤਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਮੰਦੇ ਅਮਲ ਕਰੇਦਿਆ ਏਹ ਸਜਾਇ ਤਿਨਾਹ ॥੪੯॥
manday amal karaydi-aa ayh sajaa-ay tinaah. ||49||
this kind of punishment is given to those who commit evil deeds. ||49||
ਇਹ ਸਜ਼ਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਮੰਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੪੯॥
ਫਰੀਦਾ ਕੰਨਿ ਮੁਸਲਾ ਸੂਫੁ ਗਲਿ ਦਿਲਿ ਕਾਤੀ ਗੁੜੁ ਵਾਤਿ ॥
fareedaa kann muslaa soof gal dil kaatee gurh vaat.
O Farid! on your shoulder is the prayer mat, around your neck is the black scarf, candy in your mouth, but a dagger in your heart (you have disguised yourself as a pious person, you speak sweet words but your heart is deceitful),
ਹੇ ਫਰੀਦ! (ਤੇਰੇ) ਮੋਢੇ ਉਤੇ ਮੁਸੱਲਾ ਹੈ, (ਤੂੰ) ਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਕਾਲੀ ਖ਼ਫ਼ਨੀ (ਪਾਈ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ), (ਤੇਰੇ) ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿਚ ਗੁੜ ਹੈ; (ਪਰ) ਦਿਲ ਵਿਚ ਕੈਂਚੀ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਬਾਹਰ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਖਾਲਣ ਲਈ ਫ਼ਕੀਰੀ ਵੇਸ ਹੈ, ਮੂੰਹੋਂ ਭੀ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿੱਠਾ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਪਰ ਦਿਲੋਂ ਖੋਟਾ ਹੈਂ
ਬਾਹਰਿ ਦਿਸੈ ਚਾਨਣਾ ਦਿਲਿ ਅੰਧਿਆਰੀ ਰਾਤਿ ॥੫੦॥
baahar disai chaannaa dil anDhi-aaree raat. ||50||
outwardly you appear as spiritually wise but in your heart is pitch darkness of spiritual ignorance. ||50||
ਸੋ ਬਾਹਰ ਤਾਂ ਚਾਨਣ ਦਿੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ (ਪਰ) ਦਿਲ ਵਿਚ ਹਨੇਰੀ ਰਾਤ (ਵਾਪਰੀ ਹੋਈ) ਹੈ ॥੫੦॥
ਫਰੀਦਾ ਰਤੀ ਰਤੁ ਨ ਨਿਕਲੈ ਜੇ ਤਨੁ ਚੀਰੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
fareedaa ratee rat na niklai jay tan cheerai ko-ay.
O’ Farid, if someone were to cut up the body of a person imbued in God’s love, then not a drop of blood (love for materialism) would come out,
ਹੇ ਫਰੀਦ! ਜੇ ਕੋਈ (ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਦਾ) ਸਰੀਰ ਚੀਰੇ (ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਰਤਾ ਜਿਤਨਾ ਭੀ ਲਹੂ ਨਹੀਂ ਨਿਕਲਦਾ,
ਜੋ ਤਨ ਰਤੇ ਰਬ ਸਿਉ ਤਿਨ ਤਨਿ ਰਤੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੫੧॥
jo tan ratay rab si-o tin tan rat na ho-ay. ||51||
because the bodies of those who are imbued in the love of God, don’t have blood of worldly attachments in them. ||51||
ਕਿਓਂਕਿ ਜੋ ਬੰਦੇ ਰੱਬ ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ), ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਮੋਹ-ਰੂਪ ਲਹੂ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ॥੫੧॥

Third Guru:
ਇਹੁ ਤਨੁ ਸਭੋ ਰਤੁ ਹੈ ਰਤੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਤੰਨੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
ih tan sabho rat hai rat bin tann na ho-ay.
Blood is present in every body since the body cannot exist without blood,
ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਲਹੂ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਸਾਰੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਲਹੂ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ), ਲਹੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਰਹਿ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ,
ਜੋ ਸਹ ਰਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਤਿਤੁ ਤਨਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਰਤੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
jo sah ratay aapnay tit tan lobh rat na ho-ay.
but those, who are imbued with the love of their Master-God, do not have the blood of greed in their bodies.
ਜੋ ਬੰਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਖਸਮ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ) ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ) ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਲਾਲਚ-ਰੂਪ ਲਹੂ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
ਭੈ ਪਇਐ ਤਨੁ ਖੀਣੁ ਹੋਇ ਲੋਭੁ ਰਤੁ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
bhai pa-i-ai tan kheen ho-ay lobh rat vichahu jaa-ay.
When we live under the revered fear of God, then the body becomes lean and the blood of greed departs from within
ਜੇ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ) ਡਰ ਵਿਚ ਜੀਵੀਏ, ਤਾਂ ਸਰੀਰ (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਲਿੱਸਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਕਿ) ਇਸ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਲੋਭ-ਰੂਪ ਰੱਤ ਨਿਕਲ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਉ ਬੈਸੰਤਰਿ ਧਾਤੁ ਸੁਧੁ ਹੋਇ ਤਿਉ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਭਉ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥
ji-o baisantar Dhaat suDh ho-ay ti-o har kaa bha-o durmat mail gavaa-ay.
Just as metal (like gold etc) gets purified when placed in the heat of fire, similarly filth of evil-mindedness is eliminated by the revered fear of God.
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਅੱਗ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਇਆ ਸੋਨਾ ਆਦਿਕ ਧਾਤ ਸਾਫ਼ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ; ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਭੈੜੀ ਮੱਤ-ਰੂਪ ਮੈਲ ਨੂੰ ਕੱਟ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਜਨ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਜਿ ਰਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਲਾਇ ॥੫੨॥
naanak tay jan sohnay je ratay har rang laa-ay. ||52||
O’ Nanak, those human beings are graceful who develop love for God and remain imbued with His love. ||52||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਬੰਦੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਨਿਹੁਂ ਲਾ ਕੇ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਿਹੁਂ ਵਿਚ) ਰੰਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ ॥੫੨॥
ਫਰੀਦਾ ਸੋਈ ਸਰਵਰੁ ਢੂਢਿ ਲਹੁ ਜਿਥਹੁ ਲਭੀ ਵਥੁ ॥
fareedaa so-ee sarvar dhoodh lahu jithahu labhee vath.
O’ Farid, search out that lake (holy congregation of the Guru) from where you can receive the precious commodity (wealth) of Naam,
ਹੇ ਫਰੀਦ! ਉਹੀ ਤਲਾਬ ਲੱਭ, ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚੋਂ (ਅਸਲ) ਚੀਜ਼ (ਨਾਮ-ਰੂਪ ਮੋਤੀ) ਮਿਲ ਪਏ,
ਛਪੜਿ ਢੂਢੈ ਕਿਆ ਹੋਵੈ ਚਿਕੜਿ ਡੁਬੈ ਹਥੁ ॥੫੩॥
chhaparh dhoodhai ki-aa hovai chikarh dubai hath. ||53||
because nothing can be achieved by searching in a pond (gathering of false people), where the hand sinks only into the mud of worldly wealth. ||53||
ਕਿਓਂਕਿ ਛੱਪੜ ਭਾਲਿਆਂ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ, (ਉਥੇ ਤਾਂ) ਚਿੱਕੜ ਵਿਚ (ਹੀ) ਹੱਥ ਡੁੱਬਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫੩॥
ਫਰੀਦਾ ਨੰਢੀ ਕੰਤੁ ਨ ਰਾਵਿਓ ਵਡੀ ਥੀ ਮੁਈਆਸੁ ॥
fareedaa nandhee kant na raavi-o vadee thee mu-ee-aas.
O’ Farid, that person who did not rejoice remembering the Master God in youth and dies after becoming old,
ਹੇ ਫਰੀਦ! ਜਿਸ ਜੁਆਨ (ਜੀਵ-) ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੇ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ-) ਪਤੀ ਨਾ ਮਾਣਿਆ (ਭਾਵ, ਜਿਸ ਜੀਵ ਨੇ ਜੁਆਨੀ ਵੇਲੇ ਰੱਬ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਹ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ), ਉਹ (ਜੀਵ-) ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਜਦੋਂ ਬੁੱਢੀ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਮਰ ਗਈ,
ਧਨ ਕੂਕੇਂਦੀ ਗੋਰ ਮੇਂ ਤੈ ਸਹ ਨਾ ਮਿਲੀਆਸੁ ॥੫੪॥
Dhan kookayNdee gor mayN tai sah naa milee-aas. ||54||
cries loudly and regrets in his grave as to why didn’t he realize the Master-God at the right time. ||54||
ਤਾਂ (ਫਿਰ) ਕਬਰ ਵਿਚ ਤਰਲੇ ਲੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਮਰਨ ਪਿਛੋਂ ਜੀਵ ਪਛੁਤਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ਕਿ ਹੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-) ਪਤੀ! ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ (ਵੇਲੇ-ਸਿਰ) ਨਾਹ ਮਿਲੀ ॥੫੪॥
ਫਰੀਦਾ ਸਿਰੁ ਪਲਿਆ ਦਾੜੀ ਪਲੀ ਮੁਛਾਂ ਭੀ ਪਲੀਆਂ ॥
fareedaa sir pali-aa daarhee palee muchhaaN bhee palee-aaN.
O’ Farid, your hair has turned grey; your beard and the moustache also have turned grey (you have become old):
ਹੇ ਫਰੀਦ! ਸਿਰ ਚਿੱਟਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ, ਦਾੜ੍ਹੀ ਚਿੱਟੀ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਹੈ, ਮੁਛਾਂ ਭੀ ਚਿੱਟੀਆਂ ਹੋ ਗਈਆਂ ਹਨ।
ਰੇ ਮਨ ਗਹਿਲੇ ਬਾਵਲੇ ਮਾਣਹਿ ਕਿਆ ਰਲੀਆਂ ॥੫੫॥
ray man gahilay baavlay maaneh ki-aa ralee-aaN. ||55||
O’ thoughtless and foolish mind, why are you still indulging in revelries? ||55||
ਹੇ ਗ਼ਾਫ਼ਿਲ ਤੇ ਕਮਲੇ ਮਨ! (ਅਜੇ ਭੀ ਤੂੰ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀਆਂ ਹੀ) ਮੌਜਾਂ ਕਿਉਂ ਮਾਣ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ? ॥੫੫॥
ਫਰੀਦਾ ਕੋਠੇ ਧੁਕਣੁ ਕੇਤੜਾ ਪਿਰ ਨੀਦੜੀ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ॥
fareedaa kothay Dhukan kayt-rhaa pir need-rhee nivaar.
O’ Farid, how long can you run on the rooftop? (In this limited span of life how long will you run away from God); abandon such unawareness towards God.
ਹੇ ਫਰੀਦ! ਕੋਠੇ ਦੀ ਦੌੜ ਕਿਥੋਂ ਤਕ (ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਰੱਬ ਵਲੋਂ ਗ਼ਾਫ਼ਿਲ ਭੀ ਕਦ ਤਕ ਰਹੇਂਗਾ? ਉਮਰ ਆਖ਼ਰ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਇਗੀ, ਸੋ) ਰੱਬ (ਵਾਲੇ ਪਾਸੇ) ਤੋਂ ਇਹ ਕੋਝੀ (ਗ਼ਫ਼ਲਤ ਦੀ) ਨੀਂਦ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦੇਹ;
ਜੋ ਦਿਹ ਲਧੇ ਗਾਣਵੇ ਗਏ ਵਿਲਾੜਿ ਵਿਲਾੜਿ ॥੫੬॥
jo dih laDhay gaanvay ga-ay vilaarh vilaarh. ||56||
The limited number of days that have been allotted to you, are passing away very fast. |56||
ਉਮਰ ਦੇ) ਜੋ ਗਿਣਵੇਂ ਦਿਨ ਮਿਲੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਛਾਲਾਂ ਮਾਰ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਮੁੱਕਦੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ॥੫੬॥
ਫਰੀਦਾ ਕੋਠੇ ਮੰਡਪ ਮਾੜੀਆ ਏਤੁ ਨ ਲਾਏ ਚਿਤੁ ॥
fareedaa kothay mandap maarhee-aa ayt na laa-ay chit.
O’ Farid, don’t let your mind be attached to your houses, mansions and lofty buildings etc,
ਹੇ ਫਰੀਦ! (ਇਹ ਜੋ ਤੇਰੇ) ਘਰ ਤੇ ਮਹਲ-ਮਾੜੀਆਂ (ਹਨ, ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ) ਵਿਚ ਚਿੱਤ ਨਾਹ ਜੋੜ।
ਮਿਟੀ ਪਈ ਅਤੋਲਵੀ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਹੋਸੀ ਮਿਤੁ ॥੫੭॥
mitee pa-ee atolavee ko-ay na hosee mit. ||57||
when huge amount of dirt will be put upon you in the grave, then none of these things would prove to be your companion. ||57||
ਜਦੋਂ ਕਬਰ ਵਿਚ ਤੇਰੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਅਤੋਲਵੀਂ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਪਏਗੀ ਤਦੋਂ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਸਾਥੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣੇਗਾ ॥੫੭॥
ਫਰੀਦਾ ਮੰਡਪ ਮਾਲੁ ਨ ਲਾਇ ਮਰਗ ਸਤਾਣੀ ਚਿਤਿ ਧਰਿ ॥
fareedaa mandap maal na laa-ay marag sataanee chit Dhar.
O’ Farid, don’t let your mind be engrossed in your mansions and worldly possessions; instead keep in mind the powerful and inevitable death,
ਹੇ ਫਰੀਦ! (ਨਿਰਾ) ਮਹਲ-ਮਾੜੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਧਨ ਨੂੰ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਹ ਟਿਕਾਈ ਰੱਖ, (ਸਭ ਤੋਂ) ਬਲੀ ਮੌਤ ਨੂੰ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖ (ਚੇਤੇ ਰੱਖ),
