ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੇ ਕੀਨਾ ਰਿਦੈ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥੩॥
gur sabday keenaa ridai nivaas. ||3||
and God is enshrined in ones heart through the Guru’s word. ||3||
ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਗੁਰ ਸਮਰਥ ਸਦਾ ਦਇਆਲ ॥
gur samrath sadaa da-i-aal.
O’ brother, the Guru is all powerful and merciful forever,
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਗੁਰੂ ਸਭ ਤਾਕਤਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਦਇਆਵਾਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਜਪਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਏ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥੪॥੧੧॥
har jap jap naanak bha-ay nihaal. ||4||11||
O’ Nanak, the mind remains delighted by remembering God at all times. ||4||11||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਜਪ ਕੇ ਮਨ ਖਿੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੧੧॥

ਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਤ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
gur gur karat sadaa sukh paa-i-aa.
One always enjoys inner peace by remembering the Guru’s teachings at all times.
ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਸਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਇਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਭਏ ਕਿਰਪਾਲਾ ਅਪਣਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਆਪਿ ਜਪਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
deen da-i-aal bha-ay kirpaalaa apnaa naam aap japaa-i-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The merciful Master of the meek becomes kind and He Himself inspires people to remember His Name. ||1||Pause||
ਗਰੀਬਾਂ ਤੇ ਦਇਆਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੀ ਮਿਹਰਵਾਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ ਆਪ ਜਪਣ ਲਈ (ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ) ਪ੍ਰੇਰਨਾ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸੰਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਭਇਆ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸ ॥
santsangat mil bha-i-aa pargaas.
One becomes spirituality enlightened by joining the congregation of saintly persons.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ (ਬੈਠਿਆਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਦਾ) ਚਾਨਣ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਤ ਪੂਰਨ ਭਈ ਆਸ ॥੧॥
har har japat pooran bha-ee aas. ||1||
All the hopes are fulfilled by lovingly remembering God at all times. ||1||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਜਪਦਿਆਂ (ਹਰੇਕ) ਆਸ ਪੂਰੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਸਰਬ ਕਲਿਆਣ ਸੂਖ ਮਨਿ ਵੂਠੇ ॥
sarab kali-aan sookh man voothay.
all kinds of comforts and inner peace well up in one’s mind.
(ਗੁਣ ਗਾਣ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ) ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਖ ਆਨੰਦ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਵੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਏ ਗੁਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੂਠੇ ॥੨॥੧੨॥
har gun gaa-ay gur naanak toothay. ||2||12||
O’ Nanak, one can sing God’s praises only if the Guru bestows grace. ||2||12||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਹਰਵਾਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ, ਤਾਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਏ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨॥੧੨॥

One eternal God, realized by the grace of the True Guru:
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਜਾ ਠਾਉ ॥ ਨਾਹੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਉ ॥
avar na doojaa thaa-o. naahee bin har naa-o.
Except God’s Name, we beings don’t have any other place of support.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਅਸੀਂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਦੂਜਾ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ,
ਸਰਬ ਸਿਧਿ ਕਲਿਆਨ ॥ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋਹਿ ਸਗਲ ਕਾਮ ॥੧॥
sarab siDh kali-aan. pooran hohi sagal kaam. ||1||
By remembering God with adoration, all one’s tasks are accomplished and one feels as if he has attained all miraculous powers and comforts. ||1||
(ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ) ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਸਿਧੀਆਂ, ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਖ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਕੰਮ ਸਫਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥
ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੀਐ ਨੀਤ ॥
har ko naam japee-ai neet.
We should always remember God’s Name with loving devotion,
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਦਾ ਜਪਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਲਗੈ ਏਕੈ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kaam kroDh ahaNkaar binsai lagai aykai pareet. ||1|| rahaa-o.
(one who does), his lust, anger, and arrogance are destroyed and he remains imbued with God’s love. ||1||Pause||
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਪਦਾ ਹੈ) ਉਸ ਦਾ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਨਾਮਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਦੂਖੁ ਭਾਗੈ ਸਰਨਿ ਪਾਲਨ ਜੋਗੁ ॥
naam laagai dookh bhaagai saran paalan jog.
One who lovingly focuses on God’s Name, all his sorrows vanish, because God is powerful to protect those who seek His refuge.
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਹਰੇਕ ਦੁੱਖ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਰਨ ਪਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰਨ ਜੋਗ ਹੈ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੈ ਜਮੁ ਨ ਤੇਟੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਧੁਰਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ॥੨॥
satgur bhaytai jam na taytai jis Dhur hovai sanjog. ||2||
One who is preordained, unites with the true Guru (follows his teachings) and then even the fear of death doesn’t torment him. ||2||
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਧੁਰ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਤੋਂ (ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਲ) ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦਾ ਅਵਸਰ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇ, ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉੱਤੇ) ਜਮ (ਭੀ) ਜ਼ੋਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੨॥
ਰੈਨਿ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਧਿਆਇ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਤਜਹੁ ਮਨ ਕੇ ਭਰਮ ॥
rain dinas Dhi-aa-ay har har tajahu man kay bharam.
(O’ brother), abandon all the doubts of your mind and always remember God with loving devotion.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ ਆਪਣੇ) ਮਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਭਟਕਣਾਂ ਛੱਡੋ, ਅਤੇ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦੇ ਰਹੋ।
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਿਸਹਿ ਪੂਰਨ ਕਰਮ ॥੩॥
saaDhsangat har milai jisahi pooran karam. ||3||
One who has perfect destiny, realizes God in the company of the Guru. ||3||
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਪੂਰੇ ਭਾਗ ਜਾਗਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਬਿਖਾਦ ਬਿਨਸੇ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੀਨੇ ਆਪਿ ॥
janam janam bikhaad binsay raakh leenay aap.
The afflictions of countless lifetimes vanish by remembering God and He Himself saves from the agony and sins,
(ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆਂ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜਨਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਦੁੱਖ-ਕਲੇਸ਼ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਦੁੱਖਾਂ-ਕਲੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਬਚਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਮੀਤ ਭਾਈ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਪਿ ॥੪॥੧॥੧੩॥
maat pitaa meet bhaa-ee jan naanak har har jaap. ||4||1||13||
because God is our mother, father, friend and sibling; O devotee Nanak, always remember God with loving devotion. ||4||1||13||
ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆ ਕਰ। ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਮਾਂ ਪਿਉ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਭਰਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੧॥੧੩॥

(O’ brother), always remember the all pervading God with adoration,
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਦਾ ਜਪਿਆ ਕਰ,
ਕਲਿ ਕਲੇਸ ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਇ ਅਹੰ ਤਾਪ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kal kalays lobh moh binas jaa-ay ahaN taap. ||1|| rahaa-o.
because by doing so all conflicts, sufferings, greed and emotional attachment vanish along with egotism and all other afflictions. ||1||Pause||
(ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ) ਦੁੱਖ ਕਲੇਸ਼ ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ ਹਉਮੈ ਦਾ ਤਾਪ-(ਹਰੇਕ ਵਿਕਾਰ) ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਆਪੁ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਸੰਤ ਚਰਨ ਲਾਗਿ ਮਨੁ ਪਵਿਤੁ ਜਾਹਿ ਪਾਪ ॥੧॥
aap ti-aag sant charan laag man pavit jaahi paap. ||1||
All sinful thoughts vanish and the mind becomes immaculate by following the Guru’s teachings and abandoning the self-conceit. ||1||
ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਹ, ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹੁ। ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ (ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਸਾਰੇ) ਪਾਪ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬਾਰਿਕੁ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ਰਾਖਨ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮਾਈ ਬਾਪ ॥੨॥੧॥੧੪॥
naanak baarik kachhoo na jaanai raakhan ka-o parabh maa-ee baap. ||2||1||14||
Nanak is just like a child, who knows nothing to save himself from vices; but God is there to save him like his mother and father. ||2||1||14||
ਨਾਨਕ (ਤਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਇਕ) ਅੰਞਾਣ ਬੱਚਾ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਣ ਦਾ) ਕੋਈ ਢੰਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ। ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਬਚਾ ਸਕਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹੀ (ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾ) ਮਾਂ ਪਿਉ ਹੈ ॥੨॥੧॥੧੪॥

ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਸਰਨਿ ਟੇਕ ॥
charan kamal saran tayk.
The refuge of Your immaculate Name is the only support of people:
(ਤੇਰੇ) ਸੋਹਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ।
ਊਚ ਮੂਚ ਬੇਅੰਤੁ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਸਰਬ ਊਪਰਿ ਤੁਹੀ ਏਕ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ooch mooch bay-ant thaakur sarab oopar tuhee ayk. ||1|| rahaa-o.
O’ God! You are the highest, the greatest and infinite; You alone are the master of all. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਇਕ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ (ਰਾਖਾ) ਹੈਂ। ਤੂੰ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਉੱਚਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਵੱਡਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈਂ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਅਧਾਰ ਦੁਖ ਬਿਦਾਰ ਦੈਨਹਾਰ ਬੁਧਿ ਬਿਬੇਕ ॥੧॥
paraan aDhaar dukh bidaar dainhaar buDh bibayk. ||1||
O’ God, You are the support of the life of all, the destroyer of sorrows, and the giver of the discerning intellect. ||1||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਤੂੰ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ) ਜਿੰਦ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ (ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ) ਦੁੱਖ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਚੰਗੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਕਰਮ ਦੀ ਪਰਖ ਕਰ ਸਕਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਅਕਲ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ ॥੧॥
ਨਮਸਕਾਰ ਰਖਨਹਾਰ ਮਨਿ ਅਰਾਧਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮੇਕ ॥
namaskaar rakhanhaar man araaDh parabhoo mayk.
O’ brother, lovingly remember that one God in your mind and bow only to Him who is the saviour of all.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ ਸਿਰਫ਼ (ਉਸ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਕਰੋ, ਉਸ ਸਭ ਦੀ ਰਖਿਆ ਕਰ ਸਕਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਰ ਨਿਵਾਇਆ ਕਰੋ।
ਸੰਤ ਰੇਨੁ ਕਰਉ ਮਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਵੈ ਸੁਖ ਅਨੇਕ ॥੨॥੨॥੧੫॥
sant rayn kara-o majan naanak paavai sukh anayk. ||2||2||15||
O’ Nanak! humbly follow the teaching of God’s saints and one who does it, receives inner peace and innumerable comforts. ||2||2||15||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ) ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ ਵਿਚ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰ।(ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੰਤ-ਜਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਚਰਨ-ਧੂੜ ਵਿਚ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਸੁਖ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥੨॥੧੫॥
