ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਲੇਹੁ ਨ ਛੀਜੈ ਦੇਹ ॥
nit nit layho na chheejai dayh.
If you partake in this antidote everyday, then your human life won’t deteriorate,
ਜੇ ਤੂੰ (ਇਹ ਕੁਸ਼ਤਾ) ਸਦਾ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਰਹੇਂ, ਤਾਂ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਹੇਠ ਵਲ ਦੀਆਂ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਏਗਾ ,
ਅੰਤ ਕਾਲਿ ਜਮੁ ਮਾਰੈ ਠੇਹ ॥੧॥
ant kaal jam maarai thayh. ||1||
and at the time of death this antidot would defeat the demon of death. ||1||
ਅਤੇ ਅੰਤ ਵੇਲੇ ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਜਮ ਨੂੰ ਪਟਕ ਕੇ ਮਾਰੇਗਾ ॥੧॥
ਐਸਾ ਦਾਰੂ ਖਾਹਿ ਗਵਾਰ ॥
aisaa daaroo khaahi gavaar.
O’ foolish being, take such medicine (antidot),
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਜੀਵ! ਅਜੇਹੀ ਦਵਾਈ ਖਾਹ,
ਜਿਤੁ ਖਾਧੈ ਤੇਰੇ ਜਾਹਿ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jit khaaDhai tayray jaahi vikaar. ||1|| rahaa-o.
by taking which your sinful habits would go away. ||1||Pause||
ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਖਾਧਿਆਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਮੰਦ ਕਰਮ (ਸਾਰੇ) ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਣ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਰਾਜੁ ਮਾਲੁ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਸਭੁ ਛਾਂਵ ॥
raaj maal joban sabh chhaaNv.
Power, wealth and youth are like short lived shadows,
ਰਾਜ ਧਨ-ਪਦਾਰਥ ਤੇ ਜੁਆਨੀ ਇਹ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਪਰਛਾਵੇਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਹਨ,
ਰਥਿ ਫਿਰੰਦੈ ਦੀਸਹਿ ਥਾਵ ॥
rath firandai deeseh thaav.
Just as the sun rises, the shadows disappear similarly when one is spiritually enlightened, one sees the reality of these worldly perishable things.
ਜਦੋਂ ਸੂਰਜ ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ (ਹਨੇਰਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਕੇ) ਅਸਲੀ ਥਾਂ (ਪ੍ਰਤੱਖ) ਦਿੱਸ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਦੇਹ ਨ ਨਾਉ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਜਾਤਿ ॥
dayh na naa-o na hovai jaat.
Neither the body, nor glory, nor one’s caste carry any value in God’s presence,
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਸਰੀਰ, ਨਾਹ ਨਾਮਣਾ, ਨਾਹ ਉੱਚੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਕਬੂਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ,
ਓਥੈ ਦਿਹੁ ਐਥੈ ਸਭ ਰਾਤਿ ॥੨॥
othai dihu aithai sabh raat. ||2||
Because in God’s presence there is always day (of divine enlightenment) and here in this world there is always night (of spiritual ignorance).||2||
ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ (ਗਿਆਨ ਦਾ) ਦਿਨ ਚੜ੍ਹਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਇਥੇ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਿਚ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ) ਰਾਤ ਪਈ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਸਾਦ ਕਰਿ ਸਮਧਾਂ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਘਿਉ ਤੇਲੁ ॥
saad kar samDhaaN tarisnaa ghi-o tayl.
O’ foolish being, make your worldly pleasures as the firewood, worldly desires as clarified butter and oil,
(ਹੇ ਗਵਾਰ ਜੀਵ!) ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਦਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹਵਨ ਦੀ ਲੱਕੜੀ ਬਣਾ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਨੂੰ (ਹਵਨ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਘਿਉ ਤੇ ਤੇਲ ਬਣਾ;
ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਅਗਨੀ ਸਿਉ ਮੇਲੁ ॥
kaam kroDh agnee si-o mayl.
and make the lust and anger as fire, put all these together and burn them.
ਕਾਮ ਤੇ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਨੂੰ ਅੱਗ ਬਣਾ, ਇਹਨਾਂ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਕੱਠਾ ਕਰ (ਤੇ ਬਾਲ ਕੇ ਹਵਨ ਕਰ ਦੇ)।
ਹੋਮ ਜਗ ਅਰੁ ਪਾਠ ਪੁਰਾਣ ॥ ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਪਰਵਾਣ ॥੩॥
hom jag ar paath puraan. jo tis bhaavai so parvaan. ||3||
Cheerful acceptance of whatever pleases God is the sacred fire, the charitable feasts, and reading of Puraanas.
ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਰ-ਮੱਥੇ ਤੇ ਮੰਨਣਾ ਹੀ ਹਵਨ, ਜੱਗ ਅਤੇ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਆਦਿਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਾਠ ਹਨ॥੩॥
ਤਪੁ ਕਾਗਦੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨੀਸਾਨੁ ॥
tap kaagad tayraa naam neesaan.
O’ God, the effort to worship You is like the paper and Your Name is like the mark on this paper to enter Your court.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਤੇਰੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਨ ਲਈ ਉੱਦਮ ) ਤਪ (ਜੀਵ ਦੀ ਕਰਣੀ-ਰੂਪ) ਕਾਗ਼ਜ਼ ਹੈ, ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਉਸ ਕਾਗ਼ਜ਼ ਉਤੇ ਲਿਖੀ ਰਾਹਦਾਰੀ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਏਹੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ॥
jin ka-o likhi-aa ayhu niDhaan.
Those who are predestined receive this treasure of Naam,
ਇਹ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ, ਇਹ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਪਰਵਾਨਾ ਜਿਸ ਜਿਸ ਬੰਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸੇ ਧਨਵੰਤ ਦਿਸਹਿ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
say Dhanvant diseh ghar jaa-ay.
they look spiritually wealthy on reaching the Divine home (God’s presence)
ਉਹ ਬੰਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਕੇ ਧਨਾਢ ਦਿੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਨਨੀ ਧੰਨੀ ਮਾਇ ॥੪॥੩॥੮॥
naanak jannee Dhannee maa-ay. ||4||3||8||
O’ Nanak, blessed is the mother who gave birth to these beings. ||4||3||8||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਅਜੇਹੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਦੀ ਜੰਮਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਮਾਂ (ਬੜੇ) ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੩॥੮॥

Raag Malaar, First Guru:
ਬਾਗੇ ਕਾਪੜ ਬੋਲੈ ਬੈਣ ॥
baagay kaaparh bolai bain.
O’ my sister, like a flamingo you wear white clothes and utter sweet words,
(ਜਿਵੇਂ) ਚਿੱਟੇ ਖੰਭਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ (ਕੂੰਜ ਮਿੱਠੇ) ਬੋਲ ਬੋਲਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਲੰਮਾ ਨਕੁ ਕਾਲੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਨੈਣ ॥
lammaa nak kaalay tayray nain.
You have a beautiful long nose and black eyes,
ਤੇਰਾ ਨੱਕ ਲੰਮਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇਰੇ ਨੇਤ੍ਰ ਕਾਲੇ ਹਨ,
ਕਬਹੂੰ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਭੈਣ ॥੧॥
kabahooN saahib daykhi-aa bhain. ||1||
but O’ my sister, the Master-God who has blessed you with these features, have you ever seen Him? ||1||
ਪਰ ਹੇ ਭੈਣ! ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਦਾਤ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ ਤੂੰ ਕਦੇ ਉਸ ਮਾਲਕ ਦਾ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਭੀ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ? ॥੧॥
ਊਡਾਂ ਊਡਿ ਚੜਾਂ ਅਸਮਾਨਿ ॥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸੰਮ੍ਰਿਥ ਤੇਰੈ ਤਾਣਿ ॥
oodaaN ood charhaaN asmaan. saahib sammrith tayrai taan.
O’ my all powerful Master-God, it is by virtue of Your bestowed energy that like a flamingo, I fly and by flying I ascend to the skies (I become spiritually elevated).
ਹੇ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਤਾਕਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਕੂੰਜ ਤੇਰੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਤਾਕਤ ਨਾਲ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਖੰਭਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਉੱਡਦੀ ਹਾਂ, ਤੇ ਉੱਡ ਕੇ ਅਸਮਾਨ ਵਿਚ ਅੱਪੜਦੀ ਹਾਂ।
ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਡੂੰਗਰਿ ਦੇਖਾਂ ਤੀਰ ॥ ਥਾਨ ਥਨੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਬੀਰ ॥੨॥
jal thal doongar daykhaaN teer. thaan thanantar saahib beer. ||2||
O’ my brother, the Master-God is pervading all places and I visualize Him in waters, lands, mountains and the river banks. ||2||
ਹੇ ਵੀਰ! ਉਹ ਮਾਲਕ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ, ਮੈਂ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ, ਧਰਤੀ ਵਿਚ, ਪਹਾੜ ਵਿਚ, ਦਰਿਆਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਕੰਢੇ ਤੇ ਵੀ ਵੇਖਦੀ ਹਾਂ ॥੨॥
ਜਿਨਿ ਤਨੁ ਸਾਜਿ ਦੀਏ ਨਾਲਿ ਖੰਭ ॥
jin tan saaj dee-ay naal khanbh.
O’ my friend, embellishing my body, God has given me these beautiful features,
ਜਿਸ (ਮਾਲਕ) ਨੇ ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਇਹ ਸੋਹਣੇ (ਤਿੱਖੇ ਨਕਸ਼ਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ) ਅੰਗ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਹਨ,
ਅਤਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਉਡਣੈ ਕੀ ਡੰਝ ॥
at tarisnaa udnai kee danjh.
and has also put in me a strong craving to run after worldly pleasures.
(ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਬਹੁਤੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਭੀ ਉਸੇ ਨੇ ਲਾਈ ਹੈ, ਭਟਕਣ ਦੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਭੀ ਉਸੇ ਨੇ (ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ।
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਾਂ ਬੰਧਾਂ ਧੀਰ ॥
nadar karay taaN banDhaaN Dheer.
I can live in contentment only if He bestows His grace.
ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਮਾਲਕ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਵਲੋਂ) ਧੀਰਜ ਫੜਦੀ ਹਾਂ (ਮੈਂ ਭਟਕਣੋਂ ਹਟ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹਾਂ)।
ਜਿਉ ਵੇਖਾਲੇ ਤਿਉ ਵੇਖਾਂ ਬੀਰ ॥੩॥
ji-o vaykhaalay ti-o vaykhaaN beer. ||3||
O’ brother, as God reveals Himself to me, I visualize Him accordingly. ||3||
ਹੇ ਵੀਰ! ਜਿਵੇਂ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਆਪਣਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਰਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਤਿਵੇਂ ਮੈਂ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਰਦੀ ਹਾਂ ॥੩॥
ਨ ਇਹੁ ਤਨੁ ਜਾਇਗਾ ਨ ਜਾਹਿਗੇ ਖੰਭ ॥
na ih tan jaa-igaa na jaahigay khanbh.
Neither this body, nor these beautiful features would go with us after death.
ਨਾਹ ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਸਦਾ ਨਾਲ ਨਿਭੇਗਾ, ਨਾਹ ਇਹ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਅੰਗ ਹੀ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣਗੇ।
ਪਉਣੈ ਪਾਣੀ ਅਗਨੀ ਕਾ ਸਨਬੰਧ ॥
pa-unai paanee agnee kaa san-banDh.
This body is an aggregate of air, water, and fire.
ਇਹ ਤਾਂ ਹਵਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਅੱਗ ਆਦਿਕ ਤੱਤਾਂ ਦਾ ਮੇਲ ਹੈ (ਜਦੋਂ ਤੱਤ ਖਿੰਡ ਜਾਣਗੇ, ਸਰੀਰ ਢਹਿ ਢੇਰੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਏਗਾ)।
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਜਪੀਐ ਕਰਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੀਰੁ ॥
naanak karam hovai japee-ai kar gur peer.
O Nanak, only when we are blessed with His mercy, we follow the teachings of a Guru-prophet and remember God,
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਦੋਂ ਮਾਲਕ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ-ਪੀਰ ਦਾ ਪੱਲਾ ਫੜ ਕੇ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਏਹੁ ਸਰੀਰੁ ॥੪॥੪॥੯॥
sach samaavai ayhu sareer. ||4||4||9||
and then our body remains merged in the eternal God. ||4||4||9||
ਤਦੋਂ ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਉਸ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਮਾਲਕ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੪॥੯॥

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

One eternal God, realized by the grace of the True Guru:
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ਆਕਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਆਪੇ ਆਪੇ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ॥
nirankaar aakaar hai aapay aapay bharam bhulaa-ay.
The universe is the manifestation of the formless God; based on their deeds, God Himself strays the humans in doubt.
ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ਆਪਣਾ ਹੀ ਸਰੂਪ ਹੈ)। ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਤਾ ਆਪੇ ਵੇਖੈ ਜਿਤੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਤੁ ਲਾਏ ॥
kar kar kartaa aapay vaykhai jit bhaavai tit laa-ay.
Creating everything, the Creator Himself looks after it and attaches the beings to different tasks as He pleases.
ਰਚਨਾ ਨੂੰ ਰਚ ਕੇ, ਰਚਨਹਾਰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਰਜਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ (ਕੰਮ) ਵਿਚ ਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸੇਵਕ ਕਉ ਏਹਾ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਮਨਾਏ ॥੧॥
sayvak ka-o ayhaa vadi-aa-ee jaa ka-o hukam manaa-ay. ||1||
For a devotee this is the greatest honor, when God makes him cheerfully obey His command. ||1||
ਜਿਸ ਸੇਵਕ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਮਨਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਹੁਕਮ ਮਿੱਠਾ ਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਤੋਰਦਾ ਹੈ), ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਇਹੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਆਪਣਾ ਭਾਣਾ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਲਹੀਐ ॥
aapnaa bhaanaa aapay jaanai gur kirpaa tay lahee-ai.
God Himself knows His will, when we understand it by the Guru’s grace,
(ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ) ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਰਜ਼ੀ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਜਦੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਦੀ ਸਮਝ ਆ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ,
ਏਹਾ ਸਕਤਿ ਸਿਵੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਵੈ ਜੀਵਦਿਆ ਮਰਿ ਰਹੀਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ayhaa sakat sivai ghar aavai jeevdi-aa mar rahee-ai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
our mind which is attached to Maya gets focused on God and then shedding the self-conceit, we remain detached from Maya while still alive. ||1||Pause||
,ਤਦੋਂ) ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਾਲੀ ਬ੍ਰਿਤੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ) ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਦੀ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਤ-ਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਮੁਕਾ ਲਈਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਵੇਦ ਪੜੈ ਪੜਿ ਵਾਦੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਮਹੇਸਾ ॥
vayd parhai parh vaad vakhaanai barahmaa bisan mahaysaa.
A brahmin reads Vedas and then enters into discussions and talks about gods, like Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva.
(ਪਰ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਣ ਦੇ ਥਾਂ, ਪੰਡਿਤ ਨਿਰੇ) ਵੇਦ (ਹੀ) ਪੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ, ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ) ਚਰਚਾ ਹੀ (ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਸੁਣਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ; ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਵਿਸ਼ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਿਵ (ਆਦਿਕ ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਥਾ-ਕਹਾਣੀਆਂ ਹੀ ਸੁਣਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਏਹ ਤ੍ਰਿਗੁਣ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਿਨਿ ਜਗਤੁ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਕਾ ਸਹਸਾ ॥
ayh tarigun maa-i-aa jin jagat bhulaa-i-aa janam maran kaa sahsaa.
This three pronged Maya which has deluded the entire world into cynicism, keeps him in the fear of the cycle of birth and death.
ਇਹ ਤ੍ਰਿਗੁਣੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਾ ਰਖਿਆ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਜੰਮਣ ਮਰਨ (ਦੇ ਗੇੜ) ਦਾ ਸਹਿਮ ਬਣਾਈ ਰੱਖਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣੈ ਚੂਕੈ ਮਨਹੁ ਅੰਦੇਸਾ ॥੨॥
gur parsaadee ayko jaanai chookai manhu andaysaa. ||2||
But one who realized God by the Guru’s grace, his mind’s anxiety vanishes. ||2||
ਪਰ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ (ਹਰੇਕ) ਫ਼ਿਕਰ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਹਮ ਦੀਨ ਮੂਰਖ ਅਵੀਚਾਰੀ ਤੁਮ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਹਮਾਰੀ ॥
ham deen moorakh aveechaaree tum chintaa karahu hamaaree.
We are helpless, foolish and thoughtless: O’ God! take care of us.
ਅਸੀਂ ਜੀਵ ਨਿਮਾਣੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝ ਹਾਂ, ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਾਡਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰ।
ਹੋਹੁ ਦਇਆਲ ਕਰਿ ਦਾਸੁ ਦਾਸਾ ਕਾ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰੀ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥
hohu da-i-aal kar daas daasaa kaa sayvaa karee tumaaree.
O’ God! bestow mercy, make me the servant of Your devotees, so that I may remain performing Your devotional worship.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਮੇਰੇ ਉਤੇ) ਦਇਆਵਾਨ ਹੋ, (ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ) ਦਾਸਾਂ ਦਾ ਦਾਸ ਬਣਾ ਲੈ (ਤਾ ਕਿ) ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਾਂ।
ਏਕੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਦੇਹਿ ਤੂ ਅਪਣਾ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੀ ॥੩॥
ayk niDhaan deh too apnaa ahinis naam vakhaanee. ||3||
O’ God! bless me with the treasure of Your Name, so that I may always remain remembering Your Name with adoration. ||3||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ-ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਦੇਹ, ਮੈਂ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ (ਤੇਰਾ) ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਾ ਰਹਾਂ ॥੩॥
ਕਹਤ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਕੋਈ ਐਸਾ ਕਰੇ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
kahat naanak gur parsaadee boojhhu ko-ee aisaa karay veechaaraa.
Nanak says, by the Guru’s grace, only a rare person understands and thinks like this,
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ , ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹੀ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਇਉਂ ਖ਼ਿਆਲ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਜਿਉ ਜਲ ਊਪਰਿ ਫੇਨੁ ਬੁਦਬੁਦਾ ਤੈਸਾ ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥
ji-o jal oopar fayn budbudaa taisaa ih sansaaraa.
that just as foam or a bubble arises on water (and then merges back into it), similar is this world.
ਕਿ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਪਾਣੀ ਉੱਤੇ ਝੱਗ ਹੈ ਬੁਲਬੁਲਾ ਹੈ (ਜੋ ਝਬਦੇ ਹੀ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ਤਿਵੇਂ ਇਹ ਜਗਤ ਹੈ।
