ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik-oNkaar satgur parsaad.
One eternal God, realized by the grace of the True Guru:
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਭਜਿ ਆਨ ਕਰਮ ਬਿਕਾਰ ॥
har bhaj aan karam bikaar.
O’ my friends, sing God’s praises, because besides singing God’s praises all other deeds are in vain,
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਭਜਨ ਕਰਿਆ ਕਰ, (ਭਜਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਕੰਮ (ਜਿੰਦ ਲਈ) ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹਨ।
ਮਾਨ ਮੋਹੁ ਨ ਬੁਝਤ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਕਾਲ ਗ੍ਰਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
maan moh na bujhat tarisnaa kaal garas sansaar. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The egotistical pride, emotional attachments and worldly desires are not quenched, and the world remains entangled in spiritual death. ||1||Pause||
ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ, ਮੋਹ ਤੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਟਦੀ, ਦੁਨੀਆ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਵਿਚ ਫਸੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਖਾਤ ਪੀਵਤ ਹਸਤ ਸੋਵਤ ਅਉਧ ਬਿਤੀ ਅਸਾਰ ॥
khaat peevat hasat sovat a-oDh bitee asaar.
O’ my friends, because of spiritual ignorance, the life of a human being passes only in eating, drinking, laughing, and sleeping.
ਖਾਂਦਿਆਂ ਪੀਂਦਿਆਂ ਹੱਸਦਿਆਂ ਸੁੱਤਿਆਂ (ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ) ਉਮਰ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ ਵਿਚ ਬੀਤਦੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਨਰਕ ਉਦਰਿ ਭ੍ਰਮੰਤ ਜਲਤੋ ਜਮਹਿ ਕੀਨੀ ਸਾਰ ॥੧॥
narak udar bharmant jalto jameh keenee saar. ||1||
The mortal wanders in a hell-like environment of the womb where he remains miserable and ultimately the demons of death destroys him.||1||
ਉਹ ਨਰਕ ਸਮਾਨ ਗਰਭ ਅੰਦਰ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਤੇ ਸੜਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਓੜਕ ਨੂੰ ਮੌਤ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਸ਼ਟ ਕਰ ਦਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।॥੧॥
ਪਰ ਦ੍ਰੋਹ ਕਰਤ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਪਾਪ ਰਤ ਕਰ ਝਾਰ ॥
par daroh karat bikaar nindaa paap rat kar jhaar.
One deceives others, slanders, commits evil deeds, and freely indulges in sinful acts.
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਠੱਗੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਨਿੰਦਾ ਆਦਿਕ ਕੁਕਰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਬੇ-ਪਰਵਾਹ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬੂਝ ਨਾਹੀ ਤਮ ਮੋਹ ਮਹਾਂ ਅਧਾਰ ॥੨॥
binaa satgur boojh naahee tam moh mahaaN aDhaar. ||2||
Without following the Guru’s teachings, he does not understand the spiritual life, and remains in the deepest darkness of emotional attachments.||2||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ) ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ, ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਬੜੇ ਘੁੱਪ ਹਨੇਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਬਿਖੁ ਠਗਉਰੀ ਖਾਇ ਮੂਠੋ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਸਿਰਜਨਹਾਰ ॥
bikh thag-uree khaa-ay mootho chit na sirjanhaar.
one remains infatuated with Maya, as if after eating the poisonous herb one has been cheated out of spiritual wealth and the Creator is not in his mind at all.
ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਲਿਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਮਾਇਆ-ਠਗ-ਬੂਟੀ ਖਾ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਆਤਮਕ ਸਰਮਾਏ ਵਲੋਂ) ਲੁੱਟਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ।
ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗੁਪਤ ਹੋਇ ਰਹਿਓ ਨਿਆਰੋ ਮਾਤੰਗ ਮਤਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ॥੩॥
gobind gupat ho-ay rahi-o ni-aaro maatang mat ahaNkaar. ||3||
Due to one’s inflated egoistic intellect one remains intoxicated like an elephant, God is invisibly abiding within, but he remains absolutely unaware. ||3||
ਹਉਮੈ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਹਾਥੀ ਵਾਂਗ (ਫੁੱਲਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਛੁਪਿਆ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਖਰਾ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਕਰਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੰਤ ਰਾਖੇ ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਅਧਾਰ ॥
kar kirpaa parabh sant raakhay charan kamal aDhaar.
Bestowing grace, God has saved the saints whose main support is His immaculate Name.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ (ਇਸ ‘ਬਿਖੁ ਠਗਉਰੀ’ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚਾਈ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਕਰ ਜੋਰਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਰਨਿ ਆਇਓ ਗੋੁਪਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਅਪਾਰ ॥੪॥੧॥੧੨੯॥
kar jor naanak saran aa-i-o gopaal purakh apaar. ||4||1||129||
O’ infinite God of the universe, with folded hands Nanak has come to Your refuge for the protection. ||4||1||129||
ਹੇ ਗੋਪਾਲ! ਹੇ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ! ਹੇ ਬੇਅੰਤ! ਦੋਵੇਂ ਹੱਥ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਨਾਨਕ (ਤੇਰੀ) ਸਰਨ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ (ਇਸ ਦੀ ਭੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰ) ॥੪॥੧॥੧੨੯॥

ਸੁਭ ਬਚਨ ਬੋਲਿ ਗੁਨ ਅਮੋਲ ॥
subh bachan bol gun amol.
O’ mortal, recite the Guru’s words; these are full of priceless virtues and are superior to all other words,
(ਹੇ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ!) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਅਮੋਲਕ ਗੁਣ (ਸਭ ਬਚਨਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ) ਸੁਭ ਬਚਨ ਹਨ-ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰਿਆ ਕਰ।
ਕਿੰਕਰੀ ਬਿਕਾਰ ॥
kinkree bikaar.
you have become like a servant of evils.
ਹੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਾਸੀ (ਹੋ ਚੁਕੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ)!
ਦੇਖੁ ਰੀ ਬੀਚਾਰ ॥
daykh ree beechaar.
Think about it and see for yourself.
ਹੋਸ਼ ਕਰ (ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੇ ਵੇਖ)।
ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਧਿਆਇ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਾਇ ॥
gur sabad Dhi-aa-ay mahal paa-ay.
Keep the Guru’s word in your mind and attain God’s presence,
ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਈ ਰੱਖ (ਤੇ, ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ।
ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਰੰਗ ਕਰਤੀ ਮਹਾ ਕੇਲ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
har sang rang kartee mahaa kayl. ||1|| rahaa-o.
imbued with God’s love, he enjoys the spiritual bliss. ||1||pause||
ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਬੜੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸੁਪਨ ਰੀ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥
supan ree sansaar.
O, my friend, understand that this world is like a dream
(ਹੇ ਸਖੀ!) ਇਹ ਜਗਤ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਵਰਗਾ ਹੈ,
ਮਿਥਨੀ ਬਿਸਥਾਰੁ ॥
mithnee bisthaar.
and all of its expanse is perishable.
(ਇਸ ਦਾ ਸਾਰਾ) ਖਿਲਾਰਾ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਹੈ।
ਸਖੀ ਕਾਇ ਮੋਹਿ ਮੋਹਿਲੀ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਮੇਲ ॥੧॥
sakhee kaa-ay mohi mohilee pari-a pareet ridai mayl. ||1||
O’ my friend, why are you enticed by the love of worldly wealth? Instead, keep God’s love enshrined in your heart. ||1||
ਹੇ ਸਖੀ! ਤੂੰ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਕਿਉਂ ਫਸੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈਂ? ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਈ ਰੱਖ ॥੧॥
ਸਰਬ ਰੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
sarab ree pareet pi-aar.
O’ my friend, God is the embodiment of love and affection for all beings.
ਹੇ ਸਖੀ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਦਾ ਰੀ ਦਇਆਰੁ ॥
parabh sadaa ree da-i-aar.
God is always merciful.
ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਦਇਆ ਦਾ ਘਰ ਹੈ।
ਕਾਂਏਂ ਆਨ ਆਨ ਰੁਚੀਐ ॥
kaaN-ayN aan aan ruchee-ai.
Why should we get involved in other things?
ਹੋਰਸ, ਹੋਰਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ?
ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਖਚੀਐ ॥
har sang sang khachee-ai.
We should always get ourselves merged only in the love of God.
ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਉ ਸਾਧਸੰਗ ਪਾਏ ॥
ja-o saaDhsang paa-ay.
When one joins the congregation of holy persons,
ਜਦੋਂ (ਕੋਈ ਵਡ-ਭਾਗੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਏ ॥
kaho naanak har Dhi-aa-ay.
and remembers God’s Name with love and passion, says Nanak,
ਅਤੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ- ਜਦੋਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਅਬ ਰਹੇ ਜਮਹਿ ਮੇਲ ॥੨॥੧॥੧੩੦॥
ab rahay jameh mayl. ||2||1||130||
then he does not get involved with the demons of death.||2||1||130||
ਤਦੋਂ ਜਮਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਵਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ ॥੨॥੧॥੧੩੦॥

Raag Saarang, Fifth Mehl:
ਕੰਚਨਾ ਬਹੁ ਦਤ ਕਰਾ ॥
kanchnaa baho dat karaa.
O’ my mind, if a human being donates a lot of gold,
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਬਹੁਤ ਸੋਨਾ ਦਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਭੂਮਿ ਦਾਨੁ ਅਰਪਿ ਧਰਾ ॥
bhoom daan arap Dharaa.
gives away land in charity,
ਭੁਇਂ ਮਣਸ ਕੇ ਦਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਮਨ ਅਨਿਕ ਸੋਚ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਕਰਤ ॥
man anik soch pavitar karat.
and purifies his body in many ways
ਕਈ ਸੁੱਚਾਂ ਨਾਲ (ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ) ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਹੀ ਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੁਲਿ ਮਨ ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਲਾਗੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
naahee ray naam tul man charan kamal laagay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
all these endeavors are not equal to the remembrance of God’s Name; therefore, O’ my mind, stay attached to God’s immaculate Name||1||Pause||
(ਇਹ ਉੱਦਮ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ। ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਰਹੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਚਾਰਿ ਬੇਦ ਜਿਹਵ ਭਨੇ ॥
chaar bayd jihav bhanay.
O’ my mind, even if a person recites all the four Vedas with his tongue,
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਚਾਰੇ ਵੇਦ ਆਪਣੀ ਜੀਭ ਨਾਲ ਉਚਾਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਦਸ ਅਸਟ ਖਸਟ ਸ੍ਰਵਨ ਸੁਨੇ ॥
das asat khasat sarvan sunay.
and listens to the eighteen Puranas and the six Shastras with his ears,
ਅਠਾਰਾਂ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਅਤੇ ਛੇ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਕੰਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸੁਣਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਹੀ ਤੁਲਿ ਗੋਬਿਦ ਨਾਮ ਧੁਨੇ ॥
nahee tul gobid naam Dhunay.
still these deeds are not equal to the devotion to God’s Name.
(ਇਹ ਕੰਮ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਲਗਨ ਦੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ।
ਮਨ ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਲਾਗੇ ॥੧॥
man charan kamal laagay. ||1||
O’ my mind, maintain love with the immaculate God’s Name.||1||
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਬਣਾਈ ਰੱਖ ॥੧॥
ਬਰਤ ਸੰਧਿ ਸੋਚ ਚਾਰ ॥
barat sanDh soch chaar.
Observing fasts, doing daily prayers for body purification,
ਵਰਤ, ਸੰਧਿਆ, ਸਰੀਰਕ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰਤਾ,
ਕ੍ਰਿਆ ਕੁੰਟਿ ਨਿਰਾਹਾਰ ॥
kir-aa kunt niraahaar.
going to all places of pilgrimages, and wandering without eating anything,
(ਤੀਰਥ-ਜਾਤ੍ਰਾ ਆਦਿਕ ਲਈ) ਚਾਰ ਕੂਟਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਭੁੱਖੇ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਭੌਂਦੇ ਫਿਰਨਾ,
ਅਪਰਸ ਕਰਤ ਪਾਕਸਾਰ ॥
apras karat paaksaar.
or cooking food remaining untouched by anybody,
ਕਿਸੇ ਨਾਲ ਛੁਹਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਆਪਣੀ ਰਸੋਈ ਤਿਆਰ ਕਰਨੀ,
ਨਿਵਲੀ ਕਰਮ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਸਥਾਰ ॥
nivlee karam baho bisthaar.
performing yogic cleansing of inside, and doing many other such deeds,
(ਆਂਦਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਅੱਭਿਆਸ) ਨਿਵਲੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਨਾ, ਹੋਰ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਕਈ ਖਿਲਾਰੇ ਖਿਲਾਰਨੇ,
ਧੂਪ ਦੀਪ ਕਰਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਤੁਲਿ ਨ ਲਾਗੇ ॥
Dhoop deep kartay har naam tul na laagay.
as burning incense and lighting lamps before gods; O’ my mind, all of these endeavors are still not equal to remembering God’s Name.
(ਦੇਵ-ਪੂਜਾ ਲਈ) ਧੂਪ ਧੁਖਾਣੇ ਦੀਵੇ ਜਗਾਣੇ; ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਹੀ ਉੱਦਮ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਬਰਾਬਰੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ।
ਰਾਮ ਦਇਆਰ ਸੁਨਿ ਦੀਨ ਬੇਨਤੀ ॥
raam da-i-aar sun deen bayntee.
O’ merciful God, please listen to the prayer of this meek devotee.
ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! ਹੇ ਦਇਆ ਦੇ ਸੋਮੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੇਰੀ ਗਰੀਬ ਦੀ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਸੁਣ!
ਦੇਹੁ ਦਰਸੁ ਨੈਨ ਪੇਖਉ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਮਿਸਟ ਲਾਗੇ ॥੨॥੨॥੧੩੧॥
dayh daras nain paykha-o jan naanak naam misat laagay. ||2||2||131||
Please bless me so that I may experience Your blessed vision and Your Name may keep sounding sweet to Your devotee Nanak. ||2||2||131||
ਆਪਣਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਦੇਹ, ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਨਾਲ (ਸਦਾ) ਵੇਖਦਾ ਰਹਾਂ, ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ ਨੂੰ ਮਿੱਠਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥੨॥੧੩੧॥
