ਚਲਤ ਕਤ ਟੇਢੇ ਟੇਢੇ ਟੇਢੇ ॥
chalat kat taydhay taydhay taydhay.
(O’ ignorant human being), why do you walk so arrogantly?
(ਹੇ ਅੰਞਾਣ ਜੀਵ!) ਕਿਉਂ ਆਕੜ ਆਕੜ ਕੇ ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ?
ਅਸਤਿ ਚਰਮ ਬਿਸਟਾ ਕੇ ਮੂੰਦੇ ਦੁਰਗੰਧ ਹੀ ਕੇ ਬੇਢੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
asat charam bistaa kay moonday durganDh hee kay baydhay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
You are nothing more than a bundle of bones wrapped in flesh, filled with filth and emitting offensive smell. ||1||Pause||
ਹੈਂ ਤਾਂ ਤੂੰ ਹੱਡੀਆਂ, ਚੰਮੜੀ ਤੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਟੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਭਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ, ਤੇ ਦੁਰਗੰਧ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਲਿੱਬੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਰਾਮ ਨ ਜਪਹੁ ਕਵਨ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਭੂਲੇ ਤੁਮ ਤੇ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਦੂਰੇ ॥
raam na japahu kavan bharam bhoolay tum tay kaal na dooray.
O’ ignorant mortal, you do not remember God, in what illusion are you lost? Death is not far away from you.
(ਹੇ ਅੰਞਾਣ!) ਤੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ, ਕਿਹੜੇ ਭੁਲੇਖਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਭੁੱਲਿਆ ਹੈਂ? ਮੌਤ ਤੈਥੋਂ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਅਨਿਕ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਿ ਇਹੁ ਤਨੁ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਰਹੈ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਪੂਰੇ ॥੨॥
anik jatan kar ih tan raakho rahai avasthaa pooray. ||2||
You preserve this body by nurturing it in innumerable ways, but it would stop functioning when your pre-ordained lifespan is over. ||2||
ਜਿਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜਤਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਪਾਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ, ਇਹ ਉਮਰ ਪੂਰੀ ਹੋਣ ਤੇ ਢਹਿ ਪਏਗਾ ॥੨॥
ਆਪਨ ਕੀਆ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਕਿਆ ਕੋ ਕਰੈ ਪਰਾਨੀ ॥
aapan kee-aa kachhoo na hovai ki-aa ko karai paraanee.
O’ brother, nothing happens by one’s own efforts alone, therefore what can a human being do?
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ, ਜੀਵ ਦਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ, ਇਸ ਲਈ ਜੀਵ ਕੀ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?
ਜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੈ ਏਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਖਾਨੀ ॥੩॥
jaa tis bhaavai satgur bhaytai ayko naam bakhaanee. ||3||
But when it pleases God, one meets with true Guru, and then he remembers God’s Name with loving devotion. ||3||
ਪਰ ਜਦੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਬਲੂਆ ਕੇ ਘਰੂਆ ਮਹਿ ਬਸਤੇ ਫੁਲਵਤ ਦੇਹ ਅਇਆਨੇ ॥
baloo-aa kay gharoo-aa meh bastay fulvat dayh a-i-aanay.
O’ ignorant human, this body about which you are so puffed up is like a house of sand in which you are living.
ਹੇ ਅੰਞਾਣ! (ਇਹ ਤੇਰਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਰੇਤ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਸਮਾਨ ਹੈ) ਤੂੰ ਰੇਤ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੇ ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਮਾਣ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ।
ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਜਿਹ ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਿਓ ਬੂਡੇ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਸਿਆਨੇ ॥੪॥੪॥
kaho kabeer jih raam na chayti-o booday bahut si-aanay. ||4||4||
O’ Kabir! say, even the extrememy wise people who did not remember God, ultimately drowned in the worldly ocean of vices. ||4||
ਕਬੀਰ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ- ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ, ਉਹ ਬੜੇ ਬੜੇ ਸਿਆਣੇ ਭੀ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ) ਵਿਚ ਡੁੱਬ ਗਏ ॥੪॥੪॥
ਟੇਢੀ ਪਾਗ ਟੇਢੇ ਚਲੇ ਲਾਗੇ ਬੀਰੇ ਖਾਨ ॥
taydhee paag taydhay chalay laagay beeray khaan.
One who dresses up arrogantly, acts arrogantly and remains engrossed in worldly pleasures,
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਜੀਵ (ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ) ਵਿੰਗੀ ਪੱਗ ਬੰਨ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਕੜ ਕੇ ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਾਨ ਦੇ ਬੀੜੇ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਭਾਉ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਕਾਜੁ ਨ ਕਛੂਐ ਮੇਰੋ ਕਾਮੁ ਦੀਵਾਨ ॥੧॥
bhaa-o bhagat si-o kaaj na kachhoo-ai mayro kaam deevaan. ||1||
and has nothing to do with loving devotional worship of God and says arrogantly that my job is to rule over others. ||1||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਜਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਉਸਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਵਾਸਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਤੇ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੇਰਾ ਕੰਮ ਹੈ ਹਕੂਮਤ ਕਰਨੀ, ॥੧॥
ਰਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿਓ ਹੈ ਅਭਿਮਾਨਿ ॥
raam bisaari-o hai abhimaan.
In his egotistical pride, he forsakes God,
ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ (ਆ ਕੇ) ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਕਨਿਕ ਕਾਮਨੀ ਮਹਾ ਸੁੰਦਰੀ ਪੇਖਿ ਪੇਖਿ ਸਚੁ ਮਾਨਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kanik kaamnee mahaa sundree paykh paykh sach maan. ||1|| rahaa-o.
looking at gold (wealth) and very beautiful woman, he believes that they are everlasting. ||1||Pause||
ਸੋਨਾ ਤੇ ਬੜੀ ਸੁਹਣੀ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਵੇਖ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਇਹ ਮੰਨ ਬੈਠਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਸਦਾ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਲਾਲਚ ਝੂਠ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਮਹਾ ਮਦ ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਅਉਧ ਬਿਹਾਨਿ ॥
laalach jhooth bikaar mahaa mad ih biDh a-oDh bihaan.
He passes his life engrossed in greed, falsehood, vices and extreme arrogance.
ਉਸ ਦੀ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ) ਲਾਲਚ, ਝੂਠ, ਵਿਕਾਰ, ਬੜਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ-ਇਹਨੀਂ ਗੱਲੀਂ ਹੀ (ਸਾਰੀ) ਉਮਰ ਗੁਜ਼ਰ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਕਹਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਅੰਤ ਕੀ ਬੇਰ ਆਇ ਲਾਗੋ ਕਾਲੁ ਨਿਦਾਨਿ ॥੨॥੫॥
kahi kabeer ant kee bayr aa-ay laago kaal nidaan. ||2||5||
Kabir says: O’ ignorant person, ultimately death will overtake you. ||2||5||
ਕਬੀਰ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹੇ ਇੰਞਾਣੇ! ਆਖ਼ਰ ਉਮਰ ਮੁੱਕਣ ਤੇ ਮੌਤ (ਸਿਰ ਤੇ) ਆ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਪਕੜ ਲਵੇਗੀ| ॥੨॥੫॥
ਚਾਰਿ ਦਿਨ ਅਪਨੀ ਨਉਬਤਿ ਚਲੇ ਬਜਾਇ ॥
chaar din apnee na-ubat chalay bajaa-ay.
One departs from this world after beating the drum of his power for a few days.
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਚਾਰ ਦਿਹਾੜੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਹਕੂਮਤ ਦਾ ਨਗਾਰਾ ਵਜਾ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚੋ ਤੁਰਦਾ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਇਤਨਕੁ ਖਟੀਆ ਗਠੀਆ ਮਟੀਆ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਕਛੁ ਲੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
itnak khatee-aa gathee-aa matee-aa sang na kachh lai jaa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Even if he earns a lot of wealth and keeps it safe, still at the end, he does not take even a little bit with him. ||1||Pause||
ਜੇ ਇਤਨਾ ਧਨ ਭੀ ਜੋੜ ਲਏ ਕਿ ਗੰਢਾਂ ਬੰਨ੍ਹ ਲਏ, ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਵਿਚ ਦੱਬ ਰੱਖੇ, ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਕੋਈ ਚੀਜ਼ ਅੰਤ ਵੇਲੇ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਦਿਹਰੀ ਬੈਠੀ ਮਿਹਰੀ ਰੋਵੈ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਲਉ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਾਇ ॥
dihree baithee mihree rovai du-aarai la-o sang maa-ay.
When he dies, his wife wails sitting at the threshold and his mother accompanies his dead body to the outer gate,
(ਜਦੋਂ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ) ਘਰ ਦੀ ਦਲੀਜ਼ ਉੱਤੇ ਬੈਠੀ ਵਹੁਟੀ ਰੋਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਬਾਹਰਲੇ ਬੂਹੇ ਤਕ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮਾਂ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮੁਰਦਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਦਾ) ਸਾਥ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਮਰਹਟ ਲਗਿ ਸਭੁ ਲੋਗੁ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਹੰਸੁ ਇਕੇਲਾ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
marhat lag sabh log kutamb mil hans ikaylaa jaa-ay. ||1||
all other people and the family members accompany his dead body up to the crematorium; but his soul goes alone (to the next world). ||1||
ਮਸਾਣਾਂ ਤਕ ਹੋਰ ਲੋਕ ਤੇ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਦੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਪਰ ਜਿੰਦ ਇਕੱਲੀ ਹੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਵੈ ਸੁਤ ਵੈ ਬਿਤ ਵੈ ਪੁਰ ਪਾਟਨ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਨ ਦੇਖੈ ਆਇ ॥
vai sut vai bit vai pur paatan bahur na daykhai aa-ay.
He can never come back to see his children, wealth, city and town.
ਉਹ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਪੁੱਤਰ, ਧਨ, ਨਗਰ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਮੁੜ ਕਦੇ ਆ ਕੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਵੇਖ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਕਹਤੁ ਕਬੀਰੁ ਰਾਮੁ ਕੀ ਨ ਸਿਮਰਹੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਅਕਾਰਥੁ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥੬॥
kahat kabeer raam kee na simrahu janam akaarath jaa-ay. ||2||6||
Kabir says: (O’ ignorant person, engrossed in the perishable world), your life is passing in vain; why don’t you lovingly remember God? ||2||6||
ਕਬੀਰ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਿਉਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ? (ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਚਲਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥੬॥
ਰਾਗੁ ਕੇਦਾਰਾ ਬਾਣੀ ਰਵਿਦਾਸ ਜੀਉ ਕੀ

Raag Kaydara, The hymn of Ravidas Jee:
ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik-oNkaar satgur parsaad.
One eternal God, realized by the grace of the true Guru:
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਖਟੁ ਕਰਮ ਕੁਲ ਸੰਜੁਗਤੁ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਹਿ ॥
khat karam kul sanjugat hai har bhagat hirdai naahi.
Even if a person performs all the six prescribed religious rituals and also belongs to a high lineage, but does not have devotion for God in his heart,
ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉੱਚੀ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਕੁਲ ਦਾ ਹੋਵੇ, ਤੇ, ਨਿੱਤ ਛੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੋਵੇ; ਪਰ ਜੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ,
ਚਰਨਾਰਬਿੰਦ ਨ ਕਥਾ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੁਪਚ ਤੁਲਿ ਸਮਾਨਿ ॥੧॥
charnaarbind na kathaa bhaavai supach tul samaan. ||1||
and praises of God’s Name does not sound pleasing to him, then he is like a chandaal, the most polluted person in the society. ||1||
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਚੰਗੀਆਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦੀਆਂ, ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਚੰਡਾਲ ਦੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਹੈ, ਚੰਡਾਲ ਵਰਗਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਰੇ ਚਿਤ ਚੇਤਿ ਚੇਤ ਅਚੇਤ ॥
ray chit chayt chayt achayt.
O’ my ignorant mind, remember God with loving devotion.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਗ਼ਾਫ਼ਲ ਮਨ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰ।
ਕਾਹੇ ਨ ਬਾਲਮੀਕਹਿ ਦੇਖ ॥
kaahay na baalmeekahi daykh.
Why don’t you look at Baalmeek?
ਤੂੰ ਬਾਲਮੀਕ ਵਲ ਕਿਉਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਵੇਖਦਾ?
ਕਿਸੁ ਜਾਤਿ ਤੇ ਕਿਹ ਪਦਹਿ ਅਮਰਿਓ ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਬਿਸੇਖ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kis jaat tay kih padeh amri-o raam bhagat bisaykh. ||1|| rahaa-o.
From a low caste (social status), what a high status he achieved in his life; such is the unique glory of devotional worship of God. ||1||Pause||
ਇਕ ਨੀਵੀਂ ਜਾਤ ਤੋਂ ਬੜੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਦਰਜੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਅੱਪੜ ਗਿਆ-ਇਹ ਹੈ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਦੀ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ਤਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸੁਆਨ ਸਤ੍ਰੁ ਅਜਾਤੁ ਸਭ ਤੇ ਕ੍ਰਿਸ੍ਨ ਲਾਵੈ ਹੇਤੁ ॥
su-aan satar ajaat sabh tay krisan laavai hayt.
O’ my mind, remember that Baalmeek was an enemy of dogs, and he belonged to the lowest caste of all, but he imbued himself with the love of lord Krishna.
ਹੇ ਮਨ! (ਬਾਲਮੀਕ) ਕੁੱਤਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਵੈਰੀ ਸੀ, ਸਭ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਚੰਡਾਲ ਸੀ, ਪਰ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਕ੍ਰਿਸ੍ਨ ਜੀ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਕੀਤਾ।
ਲੋਗੁ ਬਪੁਰਾ ਕਿਆ ਸਰਾਹੈ ਤੀਨਿ ਲੋਕ ਪ੍ਰਵੇਸ ॥੨॥
log bapuraa ki-aa saraahai teen lok parvays. ||2||
What more can the poor people say in his praise whose glory is already spread throughout the three worlds (universe)? ||2||
ਵਿਚਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਕੀਹ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ? ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਲੋਕੀ ਵਿਚ ਖਿੱਲਰ ਗਈ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਅਜਾਮਲੁ ਪਿੰਗੁਲਾ ਲੁਭਤੁ ਕੁੰਚਰੁ ਗਏ ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਪਾਸਿ ॥
ajaamal pingulaa lubhat kunchar ga-ay har kai paas.
People like Ajamal, Pingla, Lodhia, and the elephant, they all got emancipated and reached God’s presence.
ਅਜਾਮਲ, ਪਿੰਗਲਾ, ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰੀ, ਕੁੰਚਰ-ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ (ਮੁਕਤ ਹੋ ਕੇ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਅੱਪੜੇ।
ਐਸੇ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਿਸਤਰੇ ਤੂ ਕਿਉ ਨ ਤਰਹਿ ਰਵਿਦਾਸ ॥੩॥੧॥
aisay durmat nistaray too ki-o na tareh ravidaas. ||3||1||
O’ Ravidas, if people of such evil intellect were emancipated (by lovingly remembering God), then why wouldn’t you be saved? ||3||1||
ਹੇ ਰਵਿਦਾਸ! ਜੇ ਅਜਿਹੀ ਭੈੜੀ ਮੱਤ ਵਾਲੇ ਤਰ ਗਏ ਤਾਂ ਤੂੰ (ਇਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਾਗਰ ਤੋਂ) ਕਿਉਂ ਨ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘੇਂਗਾ? ॥੩॥੧॥
