Raag Bhairao, First Guru, First Beat, Four Stanzas:
ੴ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik-oNkaar sat naam kartaa purakh nirbha-o nirvair akaal moorat ajoonee saibhaN gur parsaad.
There is only one God whose Name is ‘of eternal existence’’. He is the creator of the universe, all-pervading, without fear, without enmity, independent of time, beyond the cycle of birth and death and self revealed. He is realized by the Guru’s grace.
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ‘ਹੋਂਦ ਵਾਲਾ’ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦਾ ਰਚਨਹਾਰ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਸਭ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ, ਭੈ ਤੋਂ ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ, ਵੈਰ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੂਪ ਕਾਲ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ, (ਭਾਵ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਨਾਸ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ), ਜੋ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਤੋਂ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਤੁਝ ਤੇ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
tujh tay baahar kichhoo na ho-ay.
O’ God, nothing happens outside Your will.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਕੰਮ ਤੇਰੀ ਮਰਜ਼ੀ ਦੇ ਵਿਰੁੱਧ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ।
ਤੂ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖਹਿ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥
too kar kar daykheh jaaneh so-ay. ||1||
After creating everything, You Yourself look after it and know what is happening anywhere. ||1||
ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਕਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਆਪਣੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਨੂੰ) ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈਂ ॥੧॥
ਕਿਆ ਕਹੀਐ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
ki-aa kahee-ai kichh kahee na jaa-ay.
O’ God, what can we say about happenings in the world; yes we cannot say anything.
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਅਸੀਂ ਜੀਵ ਕੀਹ ਆਖ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ? ਅਸੀਂ ਕੁਛ ਨਹੀ ਆਖ ਸਕਦੇ,
ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਅਹੈ ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jo kichh ahai sabh tayree rajaa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Whatever is happening (in this world) is as per Your will. ||1||Pause||
ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਮਰਜ਼ੀ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰਣਾ ਸੁ ਤੇਰੈ ਪਾਸਿ ॥
jo kichh karnaa so tayrai paas.
O’ God, even if we want to request for anything, it is only You before whom we can pray.
ਅਸਾਂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੇ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਭੀ ਕੋਈ ਤਰਲਾ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੈ ਤੇਰੇ ਪਾਸ ਹੀ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਕੀਚੈ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥੨॥
kis aagai keechai ardaas. ||2||
Except You, unto whom can we offer our prayer? ||2||
(ਤੈਥੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਅਸੀਂ ਹੋਰ ਕੀਹਦੇ ਮੂਹਰੇ ਅਰਜ਼ੋਈ ਕਰੀਏ ॥੨॥
ਆਖਣੁ ਸੁਨਣਾ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
aakhan sunnaa tayree banee.
It only behooves us that we utter and listen to the divine words of Your praises.
(ਸਾਨੂੰ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਇਹੀ ਫਬਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਅਸੀਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਹੀ ਕਰੀਏ ਤੇ ਸੁਣੀਏ।
ਤੂ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਸਰਬ ਵਿਡਾਣੀ ॥੩॥
too aapay jaaneh sarab vidaanee. ||3||
O’ God, You Yourself know all Your wondrous Plays. ||3||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਅਦਭਬਤ ਖੇਲਾ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈਂ ॥੩॥
ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਏ ਜਾਣੈ ਆਪਿ ॥
karay karaa-ay jaanai aap.
God Himself does and gets everything done, and He knows all.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ) ਕਰਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਸਾਰੇ ਭੇਦ ਨੂੰ) ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ
ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਖੈ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪਿ ॥੪॥੧॥
naanak daykhai thaap uthaap. ||4||1||
O’ Nanak, He Himself creates, destroys and looks after everything. ||4||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਰਚ ਕੇ ਭੀ ਤੇ ਢਾਹ ਕੇ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੧॥
ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik-oNkaar satgur parsaad.
One eternal God, realized by the grace of the True Guru:
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।

Raag Bhairao, First Guru, Second beat:
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਤਰੇ ਮੁਨਿ ਕੇਤੇ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਾਦਿਕ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾਦਿ ਤਰੇ ॥
gur kai sabad taray mun kaytay indraadik barahmaad taray.
Many silent sages and gods like Indira and Brahma have been able to swim across the world-ocean of vices by reflecting on the Guru’s word.
ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਅਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵਰਗੇ ਹੋਰ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਮੋਨਧਾਰੀ ਸਾਧੂ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਹੀ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਦੇ ਰਹੇ,
ਸਨਕ ਸਨੰਦਨ ਤਪਸੀ ਜਨ ਕੇਤੇ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਰੇ ॥੧॥
sanak sanandan tapsee jan kaytay gur parsaadee paar paray. ||1||
It was through the Guru’s grace that Sanak, Sanandan (Sons of god Brahma), many penitents and devotees were ferried across the world-ocean of vices. ||1||
(ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਦੇ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ) ਸਨਕ ਸਨੰਦਨ ਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਤਪੀ ਸਾਧੂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਭਵਜਲ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘੇ ॥੧॥
ਭਵਜਲੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਕਿਉ ਤਰੀਐ ॥
bhavjal bin sabdai ki-o taree-ai.
How can anyone cross over the terrifying world-ocean of vices without following the Guru’s divine word?
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ (ਦੀ ਅਗਵਾਈ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਜਗੁ ਰੋਗਿ ਬਿਆਪਿਆ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਡੁਬਿ ਡੁਬਿ ਮਰੀਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
naam binaa jag rog bi-aapi-aa dubiDhaa dub dub maree-ai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Without remembering God’s Name, the entire world is afflicted with the malady of duality, and is spiritually deteriorating by drowning in it. ||1||Pause||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜਿਆਂ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਦਵੈਤ ਭਾਵ ਦੀ ਬੀਮਾਰੀ ਅੰਦਰ ਫਾਥੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਡੁਬ ਡੁਬ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਗੁਰੁ ਦੇਵਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਅਲਖ ਅਭੇਵਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਸੋਝੀ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ॥
gur dayvaa gur alakh abhayvaa taribhavan sojhee gur kee sayvaa.
The Guru is the embodiment of the indescribable and mysterious God; realization of God pervading the universe is attained only by following the Guru’s teachings.
ਗੁਰੂ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ) ਚਾਨਣ ਦਾ ਸੋਮਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਅਲੱਖ ਅਭੇਵ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਦਾ ਰੂਪ) ਹੈ, (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਰਸਤੇ ਤੇ ਤੁਰਿਆਂ ਹੀ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਹੋਈ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਇਆਂ ਹੀ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਭਵਣਾਂ (ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ ਦਾਤਿ ਕਰੀ ਗੁਰਿ ਦਾਤੈ ਪਾਇਆ ਅਲਖ ਅਭੇਵਾ ॥੨॥
aapay daat karee gur daatai paa-i-aa alakh abhayvaa. ||2||
One upon whom the beneficent Guru himself bestowed the gift of Naam, realized the incomprehensible and mysterious God. ||2||
ਦਾਤਾਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਆਪ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਦਿੱਤੀ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਅਲੱਖ ਅਭੇਵ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਲੱਭ ਪਿਆ ॥੨॥
ਮਨੁ ਰਾਜਾ ਮਨੁ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਮਨਸਾ ਮਨਹਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥
man raajaa man man tay maani-aa mansaa maneh samaa-ee.
The mind which is like a king (capable of controlling the sensory organs); that mind is appeased through the mind itself, and the worldly desires are absorbed in it.
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਨਾਲ) ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰਕ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਉਤੇ ਕਾਬੂ ਪਾਣ-ਜੋਗਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ; ਉਹ ਮਨ ਮਾਇਕ ਫੁਰਨਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਪਿਛੇ ਦੌੜ-ਭੱਜ ਬੰਦ ਕਰਨੀ ਮੰਨ ਗਿਆ, ਉਸ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਵਾਸਨਾ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੀ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਗਈ।
ਮਨੁ ਜੋਗੀ ਮਨੁ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਬਿਓਗੀ ਮਨੁ ਸਮਝੈ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਈ ॥੩॥
man jogee man binas bi-ogee man samjhai gun gaa-ee. ||3||
That mind which has become like a yogi (who seeks union with God), Its separation from God has been eleminated and by singing God’s praises has become spiritually thoughtful. ||3||
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ) ਮਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪੀ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ, ਉਹ ਮਨ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਵਲੋਂ ਖ਼ਤਮ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (-ਦੀਦਾਰ) ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੀ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ, ਉਹ ਮਨ ਉੱਚੀ ਸੂਝ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ, ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਨ ਲੱਗ ਪਿਆ ॥੩॥
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿਆ ਤੇ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥
gur tay man maari-aa sabad veechaari-aa tay virlay sansaaraa.
Rare are those in the world who have reflected on the Guru’s divine word and have completely controlled their mind.
ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਵਸਾਇਆ ਹੈ (ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਇਹ ਪਦਵੀ ਪਾ ਲਈ ਹੈ),
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਭਰਿਪੁਰਿ ਲੀਣਾ ਸਾਚ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ॥੪॥੧॥੨॥
naanak saahib bharipur leenaa saach sabad nistaaraa. ||4||1||2||
O’ Nanak, our Master-God is all-pervading; we swim across the worldly ocean of vices by following the Guru’s divine word. ||4||1||2|
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਲਿਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ (ਨਕਾ-ਨਕ) ਵਿਆਪਕ ਦਿੱਸ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਦੇ ਮੇਰ-ਤੇਰ ਦੇ ਡੂੰਘੇ ਪਾਣੀਆਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਉਹ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੪॥੧॥੨॥

Raag Bhairao, First Guru:
ਨੈਨੀ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਨਹੀ ਤਨੁ ਹੀਨਾ ਜਰਿ ਜੀਤਿਆ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਾਲੋ ॥
nainee darisat nahee tan heenaa jar jeeti-aa sir kaalo.
O’ mortal, your eyes do not have full power to see, your body has become frail, old age has overpowered you and death is hanging over your head.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ! ਤੇਰੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵੇਖਣ ਦੀ (ਪੂਰੀ) ਤਾਕਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹੀ, ਤੇਰਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਲਿੱਸਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ, ਬੁਢੇਪੇ ਨੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਜਿੱਤ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ (ਬੁਢੇਪੇ ਨੇ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਪਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ)। ਤੇਰੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਹੁਣ ਮੌਤ ਕੂਕ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ।
ਰੂਪੁ ਰੰਗੁ ਰਹਸੁ ਨਹੀ ਸਾਚਾ ਕਿਉ ਛੋਡੈ ਜਮ ਜਾਲੋ ॥੧॥
roop rang rahas nahee saachaa ki-o chhodai jam jaalo. ||1||
Neither you have attained divine embellishment nor you got imbued with God’s love, so how the noose of the demon of death will spare you? ||1||
ਨਾਹ ਤੇਰਾ ਰੱਬੀ ਰੂਪ ਬਣਿਆ, ਨਾਹ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਰੱਬੀ ਰੰਗ ਚੜ੍ਹਿਆ, ਨਾਹ ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਰੱਬੀ ਖੇੜਾ ਆਇਆ, ਜਮ ਦਾ ਜਾਲ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਛੱਡੇਗਾ? ॥੧॥
ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਇਓ ॥
paraanee har jap janam ga-i-o.
O’ mortal, remember God, your life is passing away.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰ। ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਬੀਤਦੀ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ।
