ਗੁਣ ਤੇ ਗੁਣ ਮਿਲਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਜੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
gun tay gun mil paa-ee-ai jay satgur maahi samaa-ay.
If one merges in the true Guru (follows his teachings) and sings God’s virtues then he receives the virtuous Name of God.
ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ ਤਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਵਿਆਂ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ‘ਨਾਮ’-ਰੂਪ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮੋੁਲਿ ਅਮੋੁਲੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਵਣਜਿ ਨ ਲੀਜੈ ਹਾਟਿ ॥
mol amol na paa-ee-ai vanaj na leejai haat.
But Naam is so invaluable that it cannot be purchased at any price, and it cannot be bought at any shop.
ਪਰ’ਨਾਮ ‘ਬਹੁ ਮੁਲਾ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਹੈ, ਕਿਸੇ ਕੀਮਤ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦਾ, ਕਿਸੇ ਹੱਟ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਰੀਦ ਕੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਪੂਰਾ ਤੋਲੁ ਹੈ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਘਾਟਿ ॥੧॥
naanak pooraa tol hai kabahu na hovai ghaat. ||1||
O’ Nanak, the price of obtaining Naam is to follow the Guru’s teachings, it always maintains its full value and is never reduced. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (‘ਨਾਮ’ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਲ ਦਾ) ਤੋਲ ਤਾਂ ਬੱਝਵਾਂ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਕਦੇ ਘਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ (ਭਾਵ, ‘ਆਪਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਕਰਨਾ’-ਇਹ ਬੱਝਵਾਂ ਮੁੱਲ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਘਟ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਉੱਦਮ ‘ਨਾਮ’ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਲਈ ਕਾਫ਼ੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ) ॥੧॥

Fourth Guru:
ਨਾਮ ਵਿਹੂਣੇ ਭਰਮਸਹਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਜਾਵਹਿ ਨੀਤ ॥
naam vihoonay bharmaseh aavahi jaaveh neet.
Those who are devoid of Naam, keep wandering through the cycle of birth and death forever.
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ‘ਨਾਮ’ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ)।
ਇਕਿ ਬਾਂਧੇ ਇਕਿ ਢੀਲਿਆ ਇਕਿ ਸੁਖੀਏ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ॥
ik baaNDhay ik dheeli-aa ik sukhee-ay har pareet.
There are some, who are bound in the worldly bonds, some have loosened these somewhat, some others are imbued with God’s love and abide in total peace.
ਸੋ, ਕਈ ਜੀਵ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ‘ਵਾਸਨਾ’ ਨਾਲ) ਬੱਝੇ ਪਏ ਹਨ, ਕਈਆਂ ਨੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਕੁਝ ਢਿੱਲੇ ਕਰ ਲਏ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਕਈ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ (ਬਿਲਕੁਲ) ਸੁਖੀ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚਾ ਮੰਨਿ ਲੈ ਸਚੁ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਚੁ ਰੀਤਿ ॥੨॥
naanak sachaa man lai sach karnee sach reet. ||2||
O’ Nanak, one who develops full faith in God, his conduct and way of life becomes truthful. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪੱਕਾ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਨਾਮ ਉਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਕਰਨ-ਜੋਗ ਕੰਮ ਹੈ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਜੁਗਤਿ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥

Pauree:
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਅਤਿ ਖੜਗੁ ਕਰਾਰਾ ॥
gur tay gi-aan paa-i-aa at kharhag karaaraa.
O’ my friends, the divine wisdom which I have received from the Guru is like a very sturdy sharp sword.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ, ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਜੋ ਗਿਆਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਬੜਾ ਸਖਤ ਤੇ ਤੇਜ਼ ਤਲਵਾਰ ਵਰਗਾ ਹੈ।
ਦੂਜਾ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਗੜੁ ਕਟਿਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਾ ॥
doojaa bharam garh kati-aa moh lobh ahaNkaaraa.
It has dispelled the evil impulses from my mind, as if I have conquered the fortress of duality, doubt, worldly attachment, greed, and egotism.
ਇਸ ਨੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਰੂਪ ਕਿਲ੍ਹਾ, ਮੋਹ, ਲੋਭ ਤੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਕਟ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
har kaa naam man vasi-aa gur sabad veechaaraa.
By reflecting on the Guru’s word, God’s Name has manifested in my mind.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜਿਆਂ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਵੱਸ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਸਚ ਸੰਜਮਿ ਮਤਿ ਊਤਮਾ ਹਰਿ ਲਗਾ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥
sach sanjam mat ootmaa har lagaa pi-aaraa.
By practicing righteousness and self discipline, my intellect has become sublime and God has become dear to me.
ਸਚ ਤੇ ਸੰਜਮ ਨਾਲ ਮੇਰੀ ਮੱਤ ਚੰਗੀ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਹੈ, ਰੱਬ ਮੈਂਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਣ ਲੱਗ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਸਭੁ ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਸਚੁ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੧॥
sabh sacho sach varatdaa sach sirjanhaaraa. ||1||
Now I experience God, the eternal Creator pervading everywhere. ||1||
ਹੁਣ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਮੈਂਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥

Shalok, Third Guru:
ਕੇਦਾਰਾ ਰਾਗਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਭਾਈ ਸਬਦੇ ਕਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
kaydaaraa raagaa vich jaanee-ai bhaa-ee sabday karay pi-aar.
O’ brother, the Kedaara Raag should be considered supreme amongst all the melodies, if it’s singer develops love for the Guru’s divine word,
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਕੇਦਾਰਾ ਰਾਗ ਨੂੰ ਬਾਕੀ ਦੇ ਰਾਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਜਾਣੋ ਜੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਗਾਉਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਨ ਲੱਗ ਪਏ,
ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਮਿਲਦੋ ਰਹੈ ਸਚੇ ਧਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
satsangat si-o mildo rahai sachay Dharay pi-aar.
keeps associating with the holy congregation and enshrines love for God;
ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹੇ ਅਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰੇ;
ਵਿਚਹੁ ਮਲੁ ਕਟੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਕੁਲਾ ਕਾ ਕਰੇ ਉਧਾਰੁ ॥
vichahu mal katay aapnee kulaa kaa karay uDhaar.
removes the dirt of vices from within, emancipates his entire lineage as well,
ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਮੈਲ ਭੀ ਕੱਟੇ ਤੇ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਕੁਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਤਾਰ ਲਏ,
ਗੁਣਾ ਕੀ ਰਾਸਿ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹੈ ਅਵਗਣ ਕਢੈ ਵਿਡਾਰਿ ॥
gunaa kee raas sangrahai avgan kadhai vidaar.
amasses the wealth of virtues, destroys and drives out his sins.
ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਪੂੰਜੀ ਇਕੱਠੀ ਕਰੇ ਤੇ ਔਗੁਣ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਕੱਢ ਦੇਵੇ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਸੋ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਗੁਰੂ ਨ ਛੋਡੈ ਆਪਣਾ ਦੂਜੈ ਨ ਧਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥੧॥
naanak mili-aa so jaanee-ai guroo na chhodai aapnaa doojai na Dharay pi-aar. ||1||
O’ Nanak, he alone should be considered united with God, who never forsakes his Guru and does not develop love for Maya (worldly riches and power). ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਰੱਬ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝੋ ਜੋ ਕਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਨਾਹ ਛੱਡੇ ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਮੋਹ ਨਾਹ ਪਾਏ ॥੧॥

Fourth Guru:
ਸਾਗਰੁ ਦੇਖਉ ਡਰਿ ਮਰਉ ਭੈ ਤੇਰੈ ਡਰੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥
saagar daykh-a-u dar mara-o bhai tayrai dar naahi.
O’ God, I dread to death, when I look at this world-ocean of vices; but I am not afraid of it when I live by Your revered fear.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਦੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਤਾਂ ਡਰ ਨਾਲ ਸਹਿਮ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਪਰ ਤੇਰੇ ਡਰ ਵਿਚ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਕੋਈ ਡਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦਾ;
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੰਤੋਖੀਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਗਸਾ ਨਾਇ ॥੨॥
gur kai sabad santokhee-aa naanak bigsaa naa-ay. ||2||
O’ Nanak, I become content by reflecting on the Guru’s word and I blossom in ecstasy by meditating on God’s Name. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮੈਂ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਵਾਲਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮੈਂ ਖਿੜਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੨॥

Fourth Guru:
ਚੜਿ ਬੋਹਿਥੈ ਚਾਲਸਉ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਲਹਰੀ ਦੇਇ ॥
charh bohithai chaalsa-o saagar lahree day-ay.
O’ brother, the world-ocean is churning with waves of vices, but I would cross over this world-ocean by riding the ship of the divine word of the Guru.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ, ਸੰਸਾਰ- ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤਾਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਠਾਠਾਂ ਮਾਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਪਰ ਮੈਂ ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ-ਰੂਪ ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਵਿਚ ਚੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਲੰਘਾਂਗਾ,
ਠਾਕ ਨ ਸਚੈ ਬੋਹਿਥੈ ਜੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਧੀਰਕ ਦੇਇ ॥
thaak na sachai bohithai jay gur Dheerak day-ay.
If the Guru lends his support, then by riding this boat of truth, there would be no obstruction in my spiritual journey.
ਜੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹੌਸਲਾ ਦੇਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਇਸ ਸੱਚੇ ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਵਿਚ ਚੜ੍ਹਿਆਂ (ਸਫ਼ਰ ਵਿਚ) ਕੋਈ ਰੋਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਏਗੀ।
ਤਿਤੁ ਦਰਿ ਜਾਇ ਉਤਾਰੀਆ ਗੁਰੁ ਦਿਸੈ ਸਾਵਧਾਨੁ ॥
tit dar jaa-ay utaaree-aa gur disai saavDhaan.
I can see that my Guru is keeping watch, so he would surely ferry me across to God’s abode.
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਸੁਚੇਤ ਦਿੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ (ਮੈਨੂੰ ਨਿਸ਼ਚਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਉਸ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ) ਦਰ ਤੇ ਜਾ ਉਤਾਰੇਗਾ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਪਾਈਐ ਦਰਗਹ ਚਲੈ ਮਾਨੁ ॥੩॥
naanak nadree paa-ee-ai dargeh chalai maan. ||3||
O’ Nanak, one gets this ship of the Guru’s divine by God’s grace and one goes to His presence with honor. ||3||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ( ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦਾ ਜਹਾਜ਼) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਜੀਵ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਆਦਰ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥

ਨਿਹਕੰਟਕ ਰਾਜੁ ਭੁੰਚਿ ਤੂ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਈ ॥
nihkantak raaj bhunch too gurmukh sach kamaa-ee.
O’ brother, lovingly remember God through the Guru’s teachings, and enjoy your life blissfully without any worry and sorrow,
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਕਰ (ਤੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਨਿਰਚੋਭ ਰਾਜ ਮਾਣ,
ਸਚੈ ਤਖਤਿ ਬੈਠਾ ਨਿਆਉ ਕਰਿ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ॥
sachai takhat baithaa ni-aa-o kar satsangat mayl milaa-ee.
because God who is doing justice sitting on the eternal throne, would unite you with the holy congregation.
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਤਖ਼ਤ ਤੇ ਬਹਿ ਕੇ ਨਿਆਂ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਸਤਸੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਾ ਦੇਵੇਗਾ|
ਸਚਾ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਪਣਾ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਬਣਿ ਆਈ ॥
sachaa updays har jaapnaa har si-o ban aa-ee.
By following the Guru’s teachings and meditating on God, you would realize Him.
ਓਥੇ ਨਾਮ-ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਸੱਚੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਕਮਾਇਆਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਬਣ ਆਵੇਗੀ।
ਐਥੈ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਅੰਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਸਖਾਈ ॥
aithai sukh-daata man vasai ant ho-ay sakhaa-ee.
Here in this life, the bliss giving God would manifest in your mind, and would be your companion in the end.
ਇਸ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਰੱਬ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸੇਗਾ ਤੇ ਅੰਤ ਵੇਲੇ ਭੀ ਸਾਥੀ ਬਣੇਗਾ।
ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਊਪਜੀ ਗੁਰਿ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਈ ॥੨॥
har si-o pareet oopjee gur sojhee paa-ee. ||2||
The person whom the Guru blesses with this understanding, he develops love for God. ||2||
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਸਮਝ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ੀ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥

Shalok, First Guru:
ਭੂਲੀ ਭੂਲੀ ਮੈ ਫਿਰੀ ਪਾਧਰੁ ਕਹੈ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
bhoolee bhoolee mai firee paaDhar kahai na ko-ay.
I have been roaming around lost and strayed from the spiritual path, but no one tells me the right way,
ਬਥੇਰੇ ਚਿਰ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝੀ ਹੋਈ ਮੈਂ ਭਟਕ ਰਹੀ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਪੱਧਰਾ ਰਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੱਸਦਾ,
ਪੂਛਹੁ ਜਾਇ ਸਿਆਣਿਆ ਦੁਖੁ ਕਾਟੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਕੋਇ ॥
poochhahu jaa-ay si-aani-aa dukh kaatai mayraa ko-ay.
Maybe, I should go and ask some wise persons, perhaps someone may rid me of my misery (and tell me the right path).
ਜਾ ਕੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਸਿਆਣੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੁਛਦੀ ਹਾਂ, ਭਲਾ ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮੇਰਾ ਕਸ਼ਟ ਕੱਟ ਦੇਵੇ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਾਜਨੁ ਉਤ ਹੀ ਠਾਇ ॥
satgur saachaa man vasai saajan ut hee thaa-ay.
If the true Guru’s teaching is enshrined in the mind, then the beloved God is also experienced there in the heart.
ਜੇ ਸੱਚਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਵੱਸੇ ਤਾਂ ਸੱਜਣ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਭੀ ਓਸੇ ਥਾਂ (ਭਾਵ, ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ) ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਸੀਐ ਸਿਫਤੀ ਸਾਚੈ ਨਾਇ ॥੧॥
naanak man tariptaasee-ai siftee saachai naa-ay. ||1||
O’ Nanak, one’s mind is satiated (and its wandering ends) by singing God’s praises and remembering Him with adoration. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆਂ ਮਨ ਭਟਕਣੋਂ ਹਟ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥

Third Guru:
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਣੀ ਕਾਰ ਆਪਿ ਆਪੇ ਕਰੇ ਰਜਾਇ ॥
aapay karnee kaar aap aapay karay rajaa-ay.
O’ brother, according to His will, God does whatever is worth doing,
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਕਰਨ-ਜੋਗ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਆਪੇ ਕਿਸ ਹੀ ਬਖਸਿ ਲਏ ਆਪੇ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
aapay kis hee bakhas la-ay aapay kaar kamaa-ay.
The person whom God Himself forgives, He Himself does the deed of devotional worship by manifesting in that person.
ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜਿਸ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਉਸ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਤੱਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਭਗਤੀ) ਦੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲੇ ਦੁਖ ਬਿਖੁ ਜਾਲੀ ਨਾਇ ॥੨॥
naanak chaanan gur milay dukh bikh jaalee naa-ay. ||2||
O’ Nanak, one who is enlightened with divine wisdom by meeting the Guru; by remembering God, he burns away all the agony caused by Maya. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ‘ਨਾਮ’ ਸਿਮਰ ਕੇ ਵਿਹੁ-ਰੂਪ ਮਾਇਆ ਤੋਂ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਏ ਦੁੱਖ ਸਾੜ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥

Pauree:
ਮਾਇਆ ਵੇਖਿ ਨ ਭੁਲੁ ਤੂ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੂਰਖਾ ॥
maa-i-aa vaykh na bhul too manmukh moorkhaa.
O’ self-willed fool, do not be misled seeing Maya, the worldly riches and power.
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ! ਹੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਗ਼ੁਲਾਮ! ਮਾਇਆ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਉਕਾਈ ਨਾਹ ਖਾਹ l
ਚਲਦਿਆ ਨਾਲਿ ਨ ਚਲਈ ਸਭੁ ਝੂਠੁ ਦਰਬੁ ਲਖਾ ॥
chaldi-aa naal na chal-ee sabh jhooth darab lakhaa.
It does not accompany anyone while departing from this world, so consider this worldly wealth as a false companion.
ਇਹ (ਏਥੋਂ) ਤੁਰਨ ਵੇਲੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਤੁਰਦੀ, ਸੋ, ਸਾਰੇ ਧਨ ਨੂੰ ਝੂਠਾ (ਸਾਥੀ) ਜਾਣ।
ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਅੰਧੁ ਨ ਬੂਝਈ ਸਿਰ ਊਪਰਿ ਜਮ ਖੜਗੁ ਕਲਖਾ ॥
agi-aanee anDh na boojh-ee sir oopar jam kharhag kalkhaa.
But the spiritually ignorant foolish person does not realize that the sword of death is hanging on his head.
ਪਰ ਮੂਰਖ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਕਿ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਜਮ ਦੀ ਮੌਤ ਦੀ ਤਲਵਾਰ ਭੀ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਉਬਰੇ ਜਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਚਖਾ ॥
gur parsaadee ubray jin har ras chakhaa.
By the Guru’s grace, only those who have tasted the relish of God’s Name, are saved from falling in the love for materialism.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਰਸ ਚੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ (ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਮੋਹ ਪਾਣ ਦੀ ਉਕਾਈ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
