ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰੀ ॥
kar kirpaa parabh paar utaaree.
bestowing mercy, You ferry them across the world-ocean of vices.
ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੂੰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ।
ਅਗਨਿ ਪਾਣੀ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਅਤਿ ਗਹਰਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
agan paanee saagar at gahraa gur satgur paar utaaraa hay. ||2||
This world is like a very deep ocean, instead of water it is filled with fire of vices; but the true Guru ferries us across. ||2||
ਇਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਇਕ ਬੜਾ ਹੀ ਡੂੰਘਾ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਹੈ ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਥਾਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਸੋਝੀ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
manmukh anDhulay sojhee naahee.
The self-willed persons blinded by the love for materialism, have no understanding about this world-ocean filled with the fierce worldly desires.
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ (ਇਸ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ-ਅੱਗ ਦੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਦੀ) ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ।
ਆਵਹਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਹੀ ॥
aavahi jaahi mareh mar jaahee.
They keep spiritually deteriorating in the rounds of birth and death.
ਉਹ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਚੱਕਰ ਵਿਚ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ ਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਲੇਖੁ ਨ ਮਿਟਈ ਜਮ ਦਰਿ ਅੰਧੁ ਖੁਆਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
poorab likhi-aa laykh na mit-ee jam dar anDh khu-aaraa hay. ||3||
The preordained destiny cannot be erased and the spiritually ignorant human being keeps suffering in the hands of the demon of death. ||3||
ਮੁੱਢ ਦੀ ਲਿਖੀ ਹੋਈ ਲਿਖਤਾਕਾਰ ਮੇਟੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਜੀਵ ਜਮ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਇਕਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਜਾਵਹਿ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥
ik aavahi jaaveh ghar vaas na paavahi.
(Engrossed in the love for materialism,) myriads of people keep taking birth and then dying, but cannot attain spiritual poise within themselves.
(ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ ਜੰਮਦੇ ਮਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਤਰ ਆਤਮੇ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ,
ਕਿਰਤ ਕੇ ਬਾਧੇ ਪਾਪ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ॥
kirat kay baaDhay paap kamaaveh.
Bound by their destiny based upon their past deeds, they keep committing sins.
ਉਹ ਪਿਛਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਬੱਝੇ ਹੋਏ (ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ) ਪਾਪ ਕਰੀ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਸੋਝੀ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਕਾਈ ਲੋਭੁ ਬੁਰਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੪॥
anDhulay sojhee boojh na kaa-ee lobh buraa ahaNkaaraa hay. ||4||
The spiritually ignorant person has no wisdom and understanding that greed and egotism are the greatest evils. ||4||
ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਸੂਝ ਬੂਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਿ ਲੋਭ ਤੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਬੜੇ ਬੁਰੇ ਹਨ ॥੪॥
ਪਿਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਧਨ ਸੀਗਾਰਾ ॥
pir bin ki-aa tis Dhan seegaaraa.
What good is the ornamentation of that soul bride who is without her Husband-God ?
ਜੇਹੜੀ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਪਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਵਿਛੁੜੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੋਵੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਹਾਰ-ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਕਿਸ ਅਰਥ?
ਪਰ ਪਿਰ ਰਾਤੀ ਖਸਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਾ ॥
par pir raatee khasam visaaraa.
She has forsaken her own Master-God and is infatuated with another master, the materialism.
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਤਾਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਖਸਮ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਪਰਾਏ ਮਰਦ ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗ-ਰਲੀਆਂ ਮਾਣਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਉ ਬੇਸੁਆ ਪੂਤ ਬਾਪੁ ਕੋ ਕਹੀਐ ਤਿਉ ਫੋਕਟ ਕਾਰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੫॥
ji-o baysu-aa poot baap ko kahee-ai ti-o fokat kaar vikaaraa hay. ||5||
Just as the name of the father of the son of a prostitute cannot be known and is seen with disgrace, similarly all the deeds or rituals of a soul-bride separated from the Master God are worthless and sinful. ||5||
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਵੇਸੁਆ ਦੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਦੇ ਪਿਉ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ , ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਤੀ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਵਿਛੁੜੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੇ) ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਕਰਮ ਫੋਕੇ ਤੇ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਹੀ ਹਨ ॥੫॥
ਪ੍ਰੇਤ ਪਿੰਜਰ ਮਹਿ ਦੂਖ ਘਨੇਰੇ ॥
parayt pinjar meh dookh ghanayray.
The minds of those, who do not lovingly remember God, are like ghosts living in the body-cage where they endure infinite sufferings.
(ਜੇਹੜੇ ਜੀਵ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ), ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਸਰੀਰ- ਪਿੰਜਰ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰੇਤ ਹਨ, ਜਿਥੇ ਉਹ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਦੁੱਖ ਸਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਰਕਿ ਪਚਹਿ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਅੰਧੇਰੇ ॥
narak pacheh agi-aan anDhayray.
Being spiritually ignorant, they remain miserable as if they are in hell.
ਅਗਿਆਨਤਾ ਦੇ ਹਨੇਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਉਹ (ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਦੇ) ਨਰਕ ਵਿਚ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਕੀ ਬਾਕੀ ਲੀਜੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੬॥
Dharam raa-ay kee baakee leejai jin har kaa naam visaaraa hay. ||6||
One who has forsaken God’s Name, commits sins and is required to discharge the debt of bad deeds to the judge of righteousness. ||6||
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਤੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਕਰਜ਼ਾ ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਧਰਮਰਾਜ ਦਾ ਕਰਜ਼ਾਈ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਧਰਮਰਾਜ ਦੇ ਇਸ ਕਰਜ਼ੇ ਦੀ ਵਸੂਲੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ( ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਦੁੱਖ ਸਹਾਰਨੇ ਹੀ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ) ॥੬॥
ਸੂਰਜੁ ਤਪੈ ਅਗਨਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਝਾਲਾ ॥ ਅਪਤੁ ਪਸੂ ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਬੇਤਾਲਾ ॥
sooraj tapai agan bikh jhaalaa. apat pasoo manmukh baytaalaa.
Within the mind of a self-willed person is so much stress, as if there is scorching sun emitting the poisonous flames of worldly desires; he is like a beast, a ghost who is disgraced everywhere.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਮਾਨੋ ਤਪਦਾ ਸੂਰਜ ਹੈ,ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚੋ ਵਿਹੁਲੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ-ਅੱਗ ਦੀਆਂ ਲਾਟਾਂ ਨਿਕਲਦੀਆਂ ਰਹਿੰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ, ਮਾਨੋ, ਭੂਤ ਹੈ ਪਸ਼ੂ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਤੇ ਆਦਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ।
ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਰੋਗੁ ਬੁਰਾ ਬੁਰਿਆਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੭॥
aasaa mansaa koorh kamaaveh rog buraa buri-aaraa hay. ||7||
Those who are trapped by hope and worldly desire, practice only falsehood and remain afflicted with the terrible disease of love for materialism. ||7||
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀਆਂ ਆਸਾਂ ਤੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਮਾਇਕ ਫੁਰਨਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਹੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਮੋਹ ਦਾ ਇਹ) ਅੱਤ ਭੈੜਾ ਰੋਗ ਚੰਬੜਿਆ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਮਸਤਕਿ ਭਾਰੁ ਕਲਰ ਸਿਰਿ ਭਾਰਾ ॥
mastak bhaar kalar sir bhaaraa.
One who is loaded with sins as if he is carrying a huge load of saline dirt on his head,
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ (ਪਾਪਾਂ ਦੇ) ਕੱਲਰ ਦਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰਾ ਭਾਰ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੋਵੇ,
ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਲੰਘਸਿ ਪਾਰਾ ॥
ki-o kar bhavjal langhas paaraa.
one wonders, how will he cross over the world-ocean of vices?
ਉਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘੇਗਾ?
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਬੋਹਿਥੁ ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦੀ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
satgur bohith aad jugaadee raam naam nistaaraa hay. ||8||
From the very beginning of time and throughout the ages, the true Guru has been like a ship who ferries people across through God’s Name. ||8||
ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਜੁਗਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਢ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥
ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਜਗਿ ਹੇਤੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਪਸਰਿਆ ਪਾਸਾਰਾ ॥
putar kaltar jag hayt pi-aaraa. maa-i-aa moh pasri-aa paasaaraa.
The materialism and emotional attachment has spread its expanse in such a way that everyone in the world is involved in the love of one’s children and spouse.
ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ-ਰੂਪ ਖਿਲਾਰਾ ਇਸ ਤਰਾਂ ਖਿਲਰਿਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ, ਕਿ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਨਾਲ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨਾਲ ਮੋਹ ਹੈ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੈ।
ਜਮ ਕੇ ਫਾਹੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਤੋੜੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੯॥
jam kay faahay satgur torhay gurmukh tat beechaaraa hay. ||9||
The true Guru has snapped the noose of spiritual death for the one who has followed his teachings and has reflected on God’s virtues. ||9||
ਇਸ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਦੀਆਂ ਫਾਹੀਆਂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਗਲੋਂ ਤੋੜ ਦਿੱਤੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਮੂਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੋਚ-ਮੰਡਲ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੯॥
ਕੂੜਿ ਮੁਠੀ ਚਾਲੈ ਬਹੁ ਰਾਹੀ ॥
koorh muthee chaalai baho raahee.
Cheated by falsehood, people forsake God and go astray in many different ways.
ਝੂਠ ਦੀ ਠੱਗੀ ਹੋਈ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ) ਕਈ ਹੋਰ ਰਸਤਿਆਂ ‘ਤੇ ਚਲਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਦਾਝੈ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਭਾਹੀ ॥
manmukh daajhai parh parh bhaahee.
A self-willed person suffers immensely in the love for fierce worldly desires, as if he is getting burnt by falling again ang again in the fire.
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਸੜਦਾ ਹੈ (ਦੁਖੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ)।
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਵਡ ਦਾਣਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥
amrit naam guroo vad daanaa naam japahu sukh saaraa hay. ||10||
O’ my friend, the very wise Guru is the benefactor of the ambrosial nectar of Naam; lovingly meditate on Naam, the source of sublime inner peace. ||10||
ਵੱਡਾ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹਰੀ-ਨਾਮ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ) ਨਾਮ ਜਪੋ (ਇਸੇ ਵਿਚ) ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਸੁਖ ਹੈ ॥੧੦॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਤੁਠਾ ਸਚੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਏ ॥
satgur tuthaa sach drirh-aa-ay.
The one on whom the true Guru becomes gracious, the Guru firmly enshrines the eternal God’s Name in that person;s heart,
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਤ੍ਰੁੱਠਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਹਰੀ-ਨਾਮ (ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ) ਪੱਕਾ ਕਰਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਭਿ ਦੁਖ ਮੇਟੇ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਏ ॥
sabh dukh maytay maarag paa-ay.
and eradicates all sorrows and puts him on the righteous path in life.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਮਿਟਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ ਸਹੀ ਰਸਤੇ ਤੇ ਪਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕੰਡਾ ਪਾਇ ਨ ਗਡਈ ਮੂਲੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਰਾਖਣਹਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥
kandaa paa-ay na gad-ee moolay jis satgur raakhanhaaraa hay. ||11||
The one whose savior is the true Guru himself, the thorn-like-ego does not torture him in his spiritual journey. ||11||
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਰਾਖਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ ਪੈਂਡੇ ਤੁਰਦਿਆਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪੈਰ ਵਿਚ ਕੰਡਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਚੁੱਭਦਾ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਹਉਮੈ ਦਾ ਕੰਡਾ ਦੁਖੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ) ॥੧੧॥
ਖੇਹੂ ਖੇਹ ਰਲੈ ਤਨੁ ਛੀਜੈ ॥
khayhoo khayh ralai tan chheejai.
When the body perishes, the elements from which it was made mix back into those elements.
ਜਦ ਸਰੀਰ ਆਖ਼ਰ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਸੁਆਹ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਰਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਪਾਥਰੁ ਸੈਲੁ ਨ ਭੀਜੈ ॥
manmukh paathar sail na bheejai.
The self-willed person is like a stone slab, whose heart never gets soaked with God’s loving devotion.
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪੱਥਰ ਦਿਲ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਦੇ (ਭਗਤੀ-ਭਾਵ ਵਿਚ) ਨਹੀਂ ਭਿੱਜਦਾ।
ਕਰਣ ਪਲਾਵ ਕਰੇ ਬਹੁਤੇਰੇ ਨਰਕਿ ਸੁਰਗਿ ਅਵਤਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥
karan palaav karay bahutayray narak surag avtaaraa hay. ||12||
At the end of his life, he may wail, beg and make many efforts, but he has to go through hell (pain) and heaven (happiness) of various births. ||12||
(ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਸਮਾ ਵਿਹਾ ਜਾਣ ਤੇ ਜੇ ਉਹ) ਬਥੇਰੇ ਤਰਲੇ ਭੀ ਕਰੇ ਉਹ ਕਦੇ ਨਰਕ ਵਿਚ ਕਦੇ ਸੁਰਗ ਵਿਚ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੨॥
ਮਾਇਆ ਬਿਖੁ ਭੁਇਅੰਗਮ ਨਾਲੇ ॥
maa-i-aa bikh bhu-i-angam naalay.
Just as poison is always there in a poisonous snake, similarly materialism, the poison for spiritual life, always remains clinging to human beings.
ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ, ਧਨ-ਦੌਲਤ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਹਿਰੀਲੀ ਸੱਪਣੀ ਦੇ ਸੰਗ ਵਸਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਇਨਿ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਘਰ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਗਾਲੇ ॥
in dubiDhaa ghar bahutay galaxy.
The love for materialism produces the sense of duality which has ruined many families.
ਇਸ ਮਾਇਆ ਨੇ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਵਿਚ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਘਰ ਗਾਲ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਹਨ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨ ਉਪਜੈ ਭਗਤਿ ਰਤੇ ਪਤੀਆਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥
satgur baajhahu pareet na upjai bhagat ratay patee-aaraa hay. ||13||
Love for God does not well-up without the true Guru’s teachings; imbued with devotional worship, the mind becomes appeased with God’s love. ||13||
ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਪੈਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ। ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੀਜਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਮਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿਚ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੩॥
ਸਾਕਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਉ ਬਹੁ ਧਾਵਹਿ ॥
saakat maa-i-aa ka-o baho Dhaaveh.
The faithless cynics chase after Maya in many ways.
ਮਾਇਆ-ਵੇੜ੍ਹੇ ਜੀਵ ਮਾਇਆ ਇਕੱਠੀ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਬਹੁਤ ਭੱਜ-ਦੌੜ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਕਹਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥
naam visaar kahaa sukh paavahi.
Forsaking God’s Name, how can they find inner peace?
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਕਿੱਥੋਂ ਲੈ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ?
ਤ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਗੁਣ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਖਪਹਿ ਖਪਾਵਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥
tarihu gun antar khapeh khapaaveh naahee paar utaaraa hay. ||14||
They ruin themselves and also others in the three modes of Maya, and are never able to cross over the world-ocean of misery. ||14||
ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਫਸੇ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ) ਦੁਖੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਇਸ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਉਹ ਪਾਰਲੇ ਬੰਨੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਸਕਦੇ ॥੧੪॥
ਕੂਕਰ ਸੂਕਰ ਕਹੀਅਹਿ ਕੂੜਿਆਰਾ ॥
kookar sookar kahee-ahi koorhi-aaraa.
The humans engrossed in falsehood are called pigs and dogs.
ਨਿਰੇ ਕੂੜ ਦੇ ਵਪਾਰੀ ਬੰਦੇ (ਵੇਖਣ ਨੂੰ ਤਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਅਸਲ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ) ਕੁੱਤੇ ਤੇ ਸੂਰ ਹੀ (ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ) ਅਖਵਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਭਉਕਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਭਉ ਭਉ ਭਉ ਹਾਰਾ ॥
bha-uk mareh bha-o bha-o bha-o haaraa.
They spiritually deteriorate by barking like dogs for the sake of Maya and get physically exhausted by always wandering after worldly riches and power.
ਉਹ ਕੁੱਤਿਆਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਭੌਂਕ ਭੌਂਕ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਸਹੇੜ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਸਾਰੀ ਉਮਰ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਥੱਕ ਟੁੱਟ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਝੂਠੇ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਹਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥
man tan jhoothay koorh kamaaveh durmat dargeh haaraa hay. ||15||
Their minds and bodies are engrossed in the love for Maya and they always practice falsehood; through evil intellect, they lose out in God’s presence. ||15||
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ, ਸਾਰੀ ਉਮਰ ਉਹ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਹੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਭੈੜੀ ਮੱਤੇ ਲੱਗ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਹਾਰ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧੫॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਮਨੂਆ ਟੇਕੈ ॥
satgur milai ta manoo-aa taykai.
If one meets the true Guru, then he gives solace to one’s mind.
ਜੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ (ਡੋਲਦੇ) ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰੇਕੈ ॥
raam naam day saran paraykai.
One who comes to the Guru’s refuge, he blesses that one with God’s Name.
ਉਹ ਸਰਨ ਪਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਧਨ) ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਮੋਲਕੁ ਦੇਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥
har Dhan naam amolak dayvai har jas dargeh pi-aaraa hay. ||16||
The Guru blesses him with the precious wealth of God’s Name and the divine words of God’s praises; because of these blessings, he receives love and honor in God’s presence. ||16||
ਗੁਰੂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰੂਪ (ਅਜਿਹਾ) ਕੀਮਤੀ ਧਨ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ (ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ) ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਆਦਰ-ਪਿਆਰ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੬॥
