ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਾਧੂ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥
raam naam saaDhoo sarnaa-ee.
One receives the wealth of God’s Name by coming to the Guru’s refuge.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
satgur bachnee gat mit paa-ee.
Through the Guru’s teachings, one comes to know, how big is God’s creation andhow infinite He is?
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਬਚਨਾਂ ਤੇ ਤੁਰਿਆਂ ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਆ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਕਿਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ (ਦਇਆਲ) ਹੈ ਤੇ ਕੇਡਾ ਵੱਡਾ (ਬੇਅੰਤ) ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲੇ ਮੇਲਣਹਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੭॥੩॥੯॥
naanak har jap har man mayray har maylay maylanhaaraa hay. ||17||3||9||
O’ Nanak, say: O’ my mind, always lovingly remember God; one who does it, God unites that person with Himself. ||17||3||9||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਾ) ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ (ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਵਡ-ਭਾਗੀ ਨੂੰ) ਮੇਲਣਹਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਣਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੭॥੩॥੯॥

Raag Maaroo, First Guru:
ਘਰਿ ਰਹੁ ਰੇ ਮਨ ਮੁਗਧ ਇਆਨੇ ॥
ghar rahu ray man mugaDh i-aanay.
O’ my ignorant and foolish mind, remain within yourself in a state of poise,
ਹੇ ਅੰਞਾਣ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨ! ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹੁ।
ਰਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਅੰਤਰਗਤਿ ਧਿਆਨੇ ॥
raam japahu antargat Dhi-aanay.
and remember God by focusing your attention inwards.
ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਤੇ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ।
ਲਾਲਚ ਛੋਡਿ ਰਚਹੁ ਅਪਰੰਪਰਿ ਇਉ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧॥
laalach chhod rachahu aprampar i-o paavhu mukat du-aaraa hay. ||1||
Forsaking greed, merge with the infinite God; this way, you would find the way to freedom from the vices. ||1||
ਲਾਲਚ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹੁ ਜੋ ਪਰੇ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ। ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੂੰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾ ਤੋ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਪਾਣ ਦਾ ਰਸਤਾ ਲੱਭ ਲਏਂਗਾ ॥੧॥
ਜਿਸੁ ਬਿਸਰਿਐ ਜਮੁ ਜੋਹਣਿ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
jis bisri-ai jam johan laagai.
Forgetting whom (God), the demon of death starts keeping an eye on you,
ਜਿਸ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਨੂੰ ਭੁੱਲ ਜਾਣ ਨਾਲ ਮੌਤ ਘੂਰਨ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਸਭਿ ਸੁਖ ਜਾਹਿ ਦੁਖਾ ਫੁਨਿ ਆਗੈ ॥
sabh sukh jaahi dukhaa fun aagai.
all the peace goes away, and the journey of life becomes full of misery,
ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਖ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਥਾਂ ਜੀਵਨ-ਪੰਧ ਵਿਚ ਦੁੱਖ ਹੀ ਦੁੱਖ ਵਾਪਰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜੀਅੜੇ ਏਹੁ ਪਰਮ ਤਤੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
raam naam jap gurmukh jee-arhay ayhu param tat veechaaraa hay. ||2||
O’ my mind, follow the Guru’s teachings and meditate on God’s Name; this alone is the most sublime thought. ||2||
ਹੇ ਜਿੰਦੇ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ, ਇਹ ਹੀ ਹੈ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੜੀ ਤੇ ਸ੍ਰੇਸਟ ਵਿਚਾਰ ॥੨॥
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਰਸੁ ਮੀਠਾ ॥
har har naam japahu ras meethaa.
O’ my mind, always meditate on God’s Name, very sweet is its taste.
ਹੇ ਜਿੰਦੇ! ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ. ਇਸ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ ਮਿੱਠਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਡੀਠਾ ॥
gurmukh har ras antar deethaa.
The Guru’s followers have experienced the relish of God’s Name within them.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਇਹ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਅਨੁਭਵ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਰਾਮ ਰਹਹੁ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਏਹੁ ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
ahinis raam rahhu rang raatay ayhu jap tap sanjam saaraa hay. ||3||
Always remain imbued with the love of God’s Name, this is the most sublime form of worship, penance, and self-discipline. ||3||
ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਹੋ, ਇਹ ਨਾਮ-ਰੰਗ ਹੀ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਜਪ ਹੈ, ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਤਪ ਹੈ, ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਸੰਜਮ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਬੋਲਹੁ ॥
raam naam gur bachnee bolhu.
O’ my friends, lovingly remember God’s Name through the Guru’s divine words,
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰੋ,
ਸੰਤ ਸਭਾ ਮਹਿ ਇਹੁ ਰਸੁ ਟੋਲਹੁ ॥
sant sabhaa meh ih ras tolahu.
but the bliss of remembering God wells up only in the holy congregation; look for it in the company of the saints.
ਪਰ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਆਨੰਦ ਦੀ ਭਾਲ ਕਰੋ।
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਖੋਜਿ ਲਹਹੁ ਘਰੁ ਅਪਨਾ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਨ ਗਰਭ ਮਝਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੪॥
gurmat khoj lahhu ghar apnaa bahurh na garabh majhaaraa hay. ||4||
Follow the Guru’s teachings and seek the divine abode within yourself, so that you would never have to go through the cycle of birth and death again. ||4||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਲੱਭੋ ਤਾਂ ਕਿ ਮੁੜ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਹ ਪੈਣਾ ਪਏ ॥੪॥
ਸਚੁ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਵਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹੁ ॥
sach tirath naavhu har gun gaavhu.
O’ brother, lovingly remember God and sing His praises; this deed alone is like the sacred shrine, bathe at this holy place.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ, ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਸਿਮਰੋ), ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੋ (ਇਹੀ ਹੈ ਤੀਰਥ-ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ, ਇਸ) ਤੀਰਥ ਉਤੇ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰੋ।
ਤਤੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਵਹੁ ॥
tat veechaarahu har liv laavhu.
Focus your mind on God’s Name and reflect upon His virtues.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜੋ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਚਾਰੋ।
ਅੰਤ ਕਾਲਿ ਜਮੁ ਜੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਾਕੈ ਹਰਿ ਬੋਲਹੁ ਰਾਮੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੫॥
ant kaal jam johi na saakai har bolhu raam pi-aaraa hay. ||5||
Always remember your beloved God with adoration, the fear of death will not be able to touch you at the last moments in life. ||5||
ਪਿਆਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰੋ, ਅਖ਼ੀਰਲੇ ਸਮੇ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਪੋਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕੇਗਾ ॥੫॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਵਡ ਦਾਣਾ ॥
satgur purakh daataa vad daanaa.
The true Guru is the embodiment of God; he is very wise and benevolent.
ਗੁਰੂ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ (ਦਾ ਰੂਪ) ਹੈ, ਸਭ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦੇਣ ਦੇ ਸਮਰੱਥ ਹੈ, ਬੜਾ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਹੈ,
ਜਿਸੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਸੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਣਾ ॥
jis antar saach so sabad samaanaa.
Within whom manifests the eternal God, he remains absorbed in the divine word of His praise.
ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਦਾ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਸ ਕਉ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ਤਿਸੁ ਚੂਕਾ ਜਮ ਭੈ ਭਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੬॥
jis ka-o satgur mayl milaa-ay tis chookaa jam bhai bhaaraa hay. ||6||
The one whom the true Guru unites with God through the holy congregation, that person is rid of the heavy load of fear of death. ||6||
ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਆਪਣੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਮੇਲ ਕੇ, ਸਾਈਂ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਅੰਦਰ, ਮਿਲਾਦੇ ਹਨ; ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਵੱਡਾ ਡਰ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪੰਚ ਤਤੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਕਾਇਆ ਕੀਨੀ ॥
panch tat mil kaa-i-aa keenee.
O’ brother, combining five elements (earth, ether, air, fire, and water) God created this body of yours,
(ਆਪਣੇ) ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ, ਜੋ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਪੰਜ (ਵਿਰੋਧੀ) ਤੱਤ ਰਲਾ ਕੇ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ,
ਤਿਸ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਮ ਰਤਨੁ ਲੈ ਚੀਨੀ ॥
tis meh raam ratan lai cheenee.
seek out the jewel-like God’s Name in it.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰਤਨ ਖੋਜ ਕੇ ਲੱਭ ਲੈ।
ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਆਤਮ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੭॥
aatam raam raam hai aatam har paa-ee-ai sabad veechaaraa hay. ||7||
The soul is God and God is the soul; God is realized by contemplating the Guru’s divine word. ||7||
ਆਤਮਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਤਮਾ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਸਤ ਸੰਤੋਖਿ ਰਹਹੁ ਜਨ ਭਾਈ ॥
sat santokh rahhu jan bhaa-ee.
O’ my brotherly devotees, live with a spirit of righteousness and contentment.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ ਜਨੋ! ਸਚ ਤੇ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਵਿਚ ਜੀਵਨ ਬਿਤਾਵੋ।
ਖਿਮਾ ਗਹਹੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥
khimaa gahhu satgur sarnaa-ee.
In the company of the Guru, learn how to be compassionate and to forgive other people’s excesses towards you.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਵਧੀਕੀ ਸਹਾਰਨ ਦਾ ਗੁਣ ਗ੍ਰਹਣ ਕਰੋ।
ਆਤਮੁ ਚੀਨਿ ਪਰਾਤਮੁ ਚੀਨਹੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਇਹੁ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
aatam cheen paraatam cheenahu gur sangat ih nistaaraa hay. ||8||
By recognizing God within you, recognize Him in others as well; this kind of thinking is attained in the company of the Guru. ||8||
ਆਪਣੇ ਆਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣ ਕੇ ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਆਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਪਛਾਣੋ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਇਹ ਨਿਰਨਾ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥
ਸਾਕਤ ਕੂੜ ਕਪਟ ਮਹਿ ਟੇਕਾ ॥
saakat koorh kapat meh taykaa.
The faithless cynics try to find their support in falsehood and deceit.
ਮਾਇਆ-ਵੇੜ੍ਹੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਤੇ ਛਲ ਵਿਚ ਆਸਰਾ ਭਾਲਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਅਨੇਕਾ ॥
ahinis nindaa karahi anaykaa.
they always remain busy talking ill of others in innumerable ways.
ਉਹ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਰਾਈ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਆਵਹਿ ਫੁਨਿ ਜਾਵਹਿ ਗ੍ਰਭ ਜੋਨੀ ਨਰਕ ਮਝਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੯॥
bin simran aavahi fun jaaveh garabh jonee narak majhaaraa hay. ||9||
Without remembering God, they remain in the cycle of birth and death and suffer falling repeatedly in the womb like falling in hell. ||9||
ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਝੇ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਗਰਭ-ਜੂਨ ਦੇ ਨਰਕਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੯॥
ਸਾਕਤ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਕਾਣਿ ਨ ਚੂਕੈ ॥
saakat jam kee kaan na chookai.
The faithless cynics never get rid of their fear of death.
ਮਾਇਆ-ਵੇੜ੍ਹੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਜਮ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ,
ਜਮ ਕਾ ਡੰਡੁ ਨ ਕਬਹੂ ਮੂਕੈ ॥
jam kaa dand na kabhoo mookai.
The punishment, which the demon of death keeps inflicting on them, never ends.
ਜਮ ਦੀ ਸਜ਼ਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਤੋਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਟਲਦੀ।
ਬਾਕੀ ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਕੀ ਲੀਜੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਅਫਰਿਓ ਭਾਰੁ ਅਫਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥
baakee Dharam raa-ay kee leejai sir afri-o bhaar afaaraa hay. ||10||
They have to answer to the Righteous Judge for the account of their deeds; the egotistical being carries the unbearable load of sins. ||10||
ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ) ਅਸਹਿ ਭਾਰ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਇਹ, ਮਾਨੋ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਕਰਜ਼ਾ ਹੈ) ਧਰਮਰਾਜ ਦੇ ਇਸ ਕਰਜ਼ੇ ਦਾ ਲੇਖਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਲਿਆ ਹੀ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੦॥
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਾਕਤੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਕੋ ਤਰਿਆ ॥
bin gur saakat kahhu ko tari-aa.
Is there any faithless cynic who has crossed over the worldly ocean of love for Maya without following the Guru’s teachings?
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਹੜਾ ਅਧਰਮੀ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਮਾਇਆ-ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ?
ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਤਾ ਭਵਜਲਿ ਪਰਿਆ ॥
ha-umai kartaa bhavjal pari-aa.
Engrossed in ego, he remains drowned in the worldly ocean of vices.
ਉਹ) ‘ਹਉ ਹਉ ਮੈਂ ਮੈਂ’ ਕਰਦਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚ ਡੁੱਬਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਾਰੁ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਕੋਈ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੀਐ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥
bin gur paar na paavai ko-ee har japee-ai paar utaaraa hay. ||11||
Nobody can cross over the world-ocean of vices without the Guru’s teachings; the worldly ocean of vices can be crossed only by remembering God. ||11||
ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਇਸ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਦਾ) ਪਾਰਲਾ ਬੰਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭ ਸਕਦਾ। ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆਂ ਹੀ) ਪਾਰਲੇ ਕੰਢੇ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਸਕੀਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੧॥
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਨ ਮੇਟੈ ਕੋਈ ॥
gur kee daat na maytai ko-ee.
No one can erase the Guru’s blessings.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਮੇਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਜਿਸੁ ਬਖਸੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਤਾਰੇ ਸੋਈ ॥
jis bakhsay tis taaray so-ee.
The one on whom the Guru becomes gracious, he himself ferries that person across the world-ocean of vices.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਦੁਖੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਮਨਿ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅਪਰ ਅਪਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥
janam maran dukh nayrh na aavai man so parabh apar apaaraa hay. ||12||
The pains of birth and death do not even approach that person in whose mind the infinite God becomes manifest. ||12||
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਅਪਰ ਅਪਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਢੁਕਦਾ ॥੧੨॥
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਭੂਲੇ ਆਵਹੁ ਜਾਵਹੁ ॥
gur tay bhoolay aavhu jaavhu.
O’ brother, if you remain astray from the Guru and do not follow his teachings, you will remain in the cycle of birth and death.
ਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝੇ ਰਹੋਗੇ ਤਾਂ (ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ) ਜੰਮਦੇ ਮਰਦੇ ਰਹੋਗੇ,
ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰਹੁ ਫੁਨਿ ਪਾਪ ਕਮਾਵਹੁ ॥
janam marahu fun paap kamaavahu.
Yes, you will remain in the cycle of birth and death and will continue committing sinful deeds.
ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਏ ਰਹੋਗੇ ਤੇ ਪਾਪ-ਕਰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹੋਗੇ।
ਸਾਕਤ ਮੂੜ ਅਚੇਤ ਨ ਚੇਤਹਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਤਾ ਰਾਮੁ ਪੁਕਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥
saakat moorh achayt na cheeteh dukh laagai taa raam pukaaraa hay. ||13||
The ignorant foolish faithless cynics do not remember God, but when afflicted with some misery, they cry loudly for God’s help ||13||
ਮਾਇਆ-ਵੇੜ੍ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਗ਼ਾਫ਼ਿਲ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ, ਜਦੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਦੁੱਖ ਵਿਆਪਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਵੇਲੇ ‘ਹਾਇ ਰਾਮ! ਹਾਇ ਰਾਮ!’ ਪੁਕਾਰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧੩॥
ਸੁਖੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪੁਰਬ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ ਕੀਏ ॥
sukh dukh purab janam kay kee-ay.
O’ dear, the pains and pleasures in this life are the consequences of the deeds of past lives.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ! ਪੂਰਬਲੇ ਜਨਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਭੋਗੀਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਸੋ ਜਾਣੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਦਾਤੈ ਦੀਏ ॥
so jaanai jin daatai dee-ay.
God alone knows this secret who has given these pleasures and pains.
ਇਸ ਭੇਤ ਨੂੰ ਉਹੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ (ਇਹ ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਭੋਗਣੇ) ਦਿੱਤੇ ਹਨ।
ਕਿਸ ਕਉ ਦੋਸੁ ਦੇਹਿ ਤੂ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਸਹੁ ਅਪਣਾ ਕੀਆ ਕਰਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥
kis ka-o dos deh too paraanee saho apnaa kee-aa karaaraa hay. ||14||
O’ mortal, who can you blame for your sufferings? You are bearing the intense consequences of your own deeds. ||14||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ! ਤੂੰ ਕੀਹਦੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਦੂਸ਼ਣ ਲਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਿੱਜ ਦੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਦਲੇ ਸਖਤ ਮੁਸੀਬਤ ਭੋਗ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ॥੧੪॥
