Raag Aasaa, Fifth Guru:
ਪਰਦੇਸੁ ਝਾਗਿ ਸਉਦੇ ਕਉ ਆਇਆ ॥
pardays jhaag sa-uday ka-o aa-i-aa.
O’ my true Guru, after wandering through the countless births, I have come to meditate on Naam
ਹੇ ਸ਼ਾਹ! ਚੌਰਾਸੀ ਲੱਖ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਓਪਰਾ ਦੇਸ ਬੜੀਆਂ ਔਖਿਆਈਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਲੰਘ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸੌਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਆਇਆ ਹਾਂ l
ਵਸਤੁ ਅਨੂਪ ਸੁਣੀ ਲਾਭਾਇਆ ॥
vasat anoop sunee laabhaa-i-aa.
I have heard that you have the wealth of Naam which is of incomparable beauty and is very profitable.
ਮੈਂ ਸੁਣਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਨਾਮ ਵਸਤੁ ਬੜੀ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਲਾਭ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਣ ਰਾਸਿ ਬੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਪਲੈ ਆਨੀ ॥
gun raas baneh palai aanee.
I have gathered and brought with me the capital of virtues.
ਮੈਂ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਰਮਾਇਆ ਪੱਲੇ ਬੰਨ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਲਿਆਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਦੇਖਿ ਰਤਨੁ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਲਪਟਾਨੀ ॥੧॥
daykh ratan ih man laptaanee. ||1||
Beholding the jewel like Name of God, this mind of mine is fascinated.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰਤਨ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਇਹ ਮਨ (ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਖਰੀਦਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਰੀਝ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ l
ਸਾਹ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਆਏ ॥
saah vaapaaree du-aarai aa-ay.
O’ my Guru, the devotees have come to your door.
ਹੇ ਸ਼ਾਹ! ਹੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ! ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ (ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਵਣਜ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ) ਜੀਵ-ਵਪਾਰੀ ਆਏ ਹਨ।
ਵਖਰੁ ਕਾਢਹੁ ਸਉਦਾ ਕਰਾਏ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
vakhar kaadhahu sa-udaa karaa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Please make them aware of the wealth of the Naam and teach the way to acquire it. ||1||Pause||
(ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸੌਦਾ ਕੱਢ ਕੇ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੌਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਜਾਚ ਸਿਖਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸਾਹਿ ਪਠਾਇਆ ਸਾਹੈ ਪਾਸਿ ॥
saahi pathaa-i-aa saahai paas.
The sovereign God has sent me to the Guru.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ-ਸ਼ਾਹ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਪਾਸ ਭੇਜਿਆ,
ਅਮੋਲ ਰਤਨ ਅਮੋਲਾ ਰਾਸਿ ॥
amol ratan amolaa raas.
From the Guru I have attained the priceless wealth of jewel like Naam.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਰਤਨ, ਉਹ ਸਰਮਾਇਆ ਮਿਲ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਦੀ ਕੀਮਤ ਦਾ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
ਵਿਸਟੁ ਸੁਭਾਈ ਪਾਇਆ ਮੀਤ ॥
visat subhaa-ee paa-i-aa meet.
By God’s grace, I found a loving friend (Guru),
(ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਨਾਲ) ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰ-ਭਰੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਾਲਾ ਵਿਚੋਲਾ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਮਿਲ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ,
ਸਉਦਾ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਨਿਹਚਲ ਚੀਤ ॥੨॥
sa-udaa mili-aa nihchal cheet. ||2||
from whom I obtained the wealth of Naam, and my mind stopped wandering after the worldly wealth. ||2||
ਉਸ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸੌਦਾ ਲੱਭਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਵਲ ਡੋਲਣੋਂ ਹਟ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਭਉ ਨਹੀ ਤਸਕਰ ਪਉਣ ਨ ਪਾਨੀ ॥
bha-o nahee taskar pa-un na paanee.
Neither the thieves can steal this wealth, nor the wind or water can damage it.
ਇਸ ਰਤਨ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਹ ਚੋਰ ਚੁਰਾ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ, ਨਾਹ ਝੱਖੜ ਉਡਾ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ, ਨਾਹ ਪਾਣੀ ਡੋਬ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ)।
ਸਹਜਿ ਵਿਹਾਝੀ ਸਹਜਿ ਲੈ ਜਾਨੀ ॥
sahj vihaajee sahj lai jaanee.
I have intuitively obtained this wealth of Naam from the Guru and intuitively I will take it with me (after death)
ਸਹਿਜੇ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਰਤਨ ਮੈਂ (ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ) ਖਰੀਦਿਆ ਹੈ,ਅਤੇ ਸਹਿਜੇ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਰਤਨ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਲੈ ਜਾਵਾਂਗਾ।
ਸਤ ਕੈ ਖਟਿਐ ਦੁਖੁ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
sat kai khati-ai dukh nahee paa-i-aa.
I have not endured any pain or suffering because I earned this wealth of Naam through honest means.
ਈਮਾਨਦਾਰੀ ਨਾਲ ਖੱਟਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਇਹ ਰਤਨ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਦੁੱਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਹਾਰਨਾ ਪਿਆ,
ਸਹੀ ਸਲਾਮਤਿ ਘਰਿ ਲੈ ਆਇਆ ॥੩॥
sahee salaamat ghar lai aa-i-aa. ||3||
I have safely enshrined this priceless wealth of Naam in my heart.||3||
ਤੇ ਇਹ ਨਾਮ-ਸੌਦਾ ਮੈਂ ਸਹੀ ਸਲਾਮਤਿ ਸਾਂਭ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ-ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਲੈ ਆਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਮਿਲਿਆ ਲਾਹਾ ਭਏ ਅਨੰਦ ॥
mili-aa laahaa bha-ay anand.
I have received the profit of Naam and my mind is in bliss.
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ) ਲਾਭ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਨੰਦ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਧੰਨੁ ਸਾਹ ਪੂਰੇ ਬਖਸਿੰਦ ॥
Dhan saah pooray bakhsind.
O’ God, the bestower of perfect gifts, I sing Your praises.
ਹੇ ਪੂਰੀਆਂ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ਾਂ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਸ਼ਾਹ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਸਲਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਇਹੁ ਸਉਦਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਿਨੈ ਵਿਰਲੈ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
ih sa-udaa gurmukh kinai virlai paa-i-aa.
Only a rare person attains this wealth of Naam by following the Guru’s teachings.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਕਿਸੇ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ) ਸੌਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਹਲੀ ਖੇਪ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਲੈ ਆਇਆ ॥੪॥੬॥
sahlee khayp naanak lai aa-i-aa. ||4||6||
Nanak earned this wealth of Naam by following the divine word. ||4||6||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਭੀ ਇਹ ਲਾਹੇਵੰਦਾ ਸੌਦਾ ਖੱਟ ਸਕਿਆ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੬॥

Raag Aasaa, Fifth Guru:
ਗੁਨੁ ਅਵਗਨੁ ਮੇਰੋ ਕਛੁ ਨ ਬੀਚਾਰੋ ॥
gun avgun mayro kachh na beechaaro.
O’ my friend, God did not take into account any virtues or vices of mine.
(ਹੇ ਸਹੇਲੀਏ! ਮੇਰੇ ਖਸਮ ਨੇ) ਮੇਰਾ ਕੋਈ ਗੁਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਿਚਾਰਿਆ ਮੇਰਾ ਕੋਈ ਔਗੁਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਤੱਕਿਆ।
ਨਹ ਦੇਖਿਓ ਰੂਪ ਰੰਗ ਸੀਗਾਰੋ ॥
nah daykhi-o roop rang seeNgaaro.
He did not pay any attention to my beauty, color or adornments.
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਰੂਪ ਨਹੀਂ ਵੇਖਿਆ, ਰੰਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਵੇਖਿਆ, ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਵੇਖਿਆ,
ਚਜ ਅਚਾਰ ਕਿਛੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨੀ ॥
chaj achaar kichh biDh nahee jaanee.
I did not know anything about good manners and conduct.
ਮੈਂ ਕੋਈ ਸੁਚੱਜ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਾਂ ਸਿੱਖੀ ਹੋਈ, ਮੈਂ ਉੱਚੇ ਆਚਰਨ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਢੰਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਾਂ ਜਾਣਦੀ।
ਬਾਹ ਪਕਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਸੇਜੈ ਆਨੀ ॥੧॥
baah pakar pari-a sayjai aanee. ||1||
Even then, my Husband-God led me to His Union. ||1||
ਫਿਰ ਭੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਬਾਂਹ ਫੜ ਕੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ) ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਸੇਜ ਉਤੇ ਲੈ ਆਂਦਾ ॥੧॥
ਸੁਨਿਬੋ ਸਖੀ ਕੰਤਿ ਹਮਾਰੋ ਕੀਅਲੋ ਖਸਮਾਨਾ ॥
sunibo sakhee kant hamaaro kee-alo khasmaanaa.
Listen, O my companions, my Husband-God has taken care me.
ਹੇ (ਮੇਰੀ) ਸਹੇਲੀਏ! ਸੁਣ ਮੇਰੇ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ (ਮੇਰੀ) ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ,
ਕਰੁ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਧਾਰਿ ਰਾਖਿਓ ਕਰਿ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਕਿਆ ਜਾਨੈ ਇਹੁ ਲੋਕੁ ਅਜਾਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kar mastak Dhaar raakhi-o kar apunaa ki-aa jaanai ih lok ajaanaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
taking me into His refuge, He protected me as His own. What does this ignorant world know about this mystery? ||1||Pause||
ਮੇਰੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਹੱਥ ਰੱਖ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਜਾਣ ਕੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਇਹ ਮੂਰਖ ਜਗਤ ਇਸ ਭੇਤ ਨੂੰ ਕੀਹ ਸਮਝੇ? ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸੁਹਾਗੁ ਹਮਾਰੋ ਅਬ ਹੁਣਿ ਸੋਹਿਓ ॥
suhaag hamaaro ab hun sohi-o.
(O’ my friend) My union with God now looks beautiful.
(ਹੇ ਸਹੇਲੀਏ!) ਹੁਣ ਮੇਰਾ ਵਿਆਹੁਤਾ ਜੀਵਨ, ਸੁੰਦਰ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕੰਤੁ ਮਿਲਿਓ ਮੇਰੋ ਸਭੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਜੋਹਿਓ ॥
kant mili-o mayro sabh dukh johi-o.
I am united with my Husband-God and He has diagnosed all my maladies.
ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਾਰਾ ਰੋਗ ਗਹੁ ਨਾਲ ਤੱਕ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਆਂਗਨਿ ਮੇਰੈ ਸੋਭਾ ਚੰਦ ॥
aaNgan mayrai sobhaa chand.
I am enjoying such a delight, as if in my heart is shining the moon of glory.
ਮੇਰੇ (ਹਿਰਦੇ ਦੇ) ਵੇਹੜੇ ਵਿਚ ਸੋਭਾ ਦਾ ਚੰਦ ਚੜ੍ਹ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਨਿਸਿ ਬਾਸੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਸੰਗਿ ਅਨੰਦ ॥੨॥
nis baasur pari-a sang anand. ||2||
Night and day, I am enjoying the bliss in the company of my Husband-God. ||2||
ਮੈਂ ਰਾਤ ਦਿਨ ਪਿਆਰੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ) ਨਾਲ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣ ਰਹੀ ਹਾਂ ॥੨॥
ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਹਮਾਰੇ ਰੰਗਿ ਚਲੂਲ ॥
bastar hamaaray rang chalool.
I feel so happy, as if my clothes are dyed in the deep crimson color of love.
ਮੇਰੇ (ਸਾਲੂ ਆਦਿਕ) ਕੱਪੜੇ, ਗੂੜ੍ਹੇ ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਗਏ ਹਨ,
ਸਗਲ ਆਭਰਣ ਸੋਭਾ ਕੰਠਿ ਫੂਲ ॥
sagal aabhran sobhaa kanth fool.
My virtues adorn me, as if I am wearing ornaments and garlands around my neck.
ਸਾਰੇ ਗਹਣੇ (ਮੇਰੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਉਤੇ ਫਬ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ) ਫੁੱਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਾਰ ਮੇਰੇ ਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਸੋਭਾ ਦੇ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।
ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਪੇਖੀ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਪਾਏ ਸਗਲ ਨਿਧਾਨ ॥
pari-a paykhee darisat paa-ay sagal niDhaan.
When my beloved-God saw me lovingly, I felt as if I had obtained all treasures.
ਪਿਆਰੇ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਨਾਲ ਤੱਕਿਆ ਹੈ। ਹੁਣ, ਮਾਨੋ ਮੈਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਹੀ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲਏ ਹਨ।
ਦੁਸਟ ਦੂਤ ਕੀ ਚੂਕੀ ਕਾਨਿ ॥੩॥
dusat doot kee chookee kaan. ||3||
Now gone is the threat of any evil vices or impulses. ||3||
ਹੁਣ, ਹੇ ਸਹੇਲੀਏ! ਕਮਾਦਿਕ ਭੈੜੇ ਵੈਰੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਧੌਂਸ (ਮੇਰੇ ਉੱਤੋਂ) ਮੁੱਕ ਗਈ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਸਦ ਖੁਸੀਆ ਸਦਾ ਰੰਗ ਮਾਣੇ ॥
sad khusee-aa sadaa rang maanay.
I am always happy and I am constantly enjoying the eternal bliss.
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਹੁਣ ਸਦਾ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀਆਂ ਹੀ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਮੈਂ ਹੁਣ ਸਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣ ਰਹੀ ਹਾਂ।
ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਮਹਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਨੇ ॥
na-o niDh naam garih meh tariptaanay.
God’s Name like the nine treasures the world is enshrined in my heart, therefore, all my longing for Maya has ended.
ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਨੌ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਿਆਂ ਵਰਗਾ ਨਾਮ ਮੇਰੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ-ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਵੱਸਿਆ ਹੈ, ਮੇਰੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਮੁੱਕ ਗਈ ਹੈ।
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਉ ਪਿਰਹਿ ਸੀਗਾਰੀ ॥
kaho naanak ja-o pireh seegaaree.
Nanak says, when a soul-bride is adorned by God with virtuous life conduct,
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ-) ਜਦੋਂ (ਕਿਸੇ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੂੰ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਨੇ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ,
ਥਿਰੁ ਸੋਹਾਗਨਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਭਤਾਰੀ ॥੪॥੭॥
thir sohaagan sang bhataaree. ||4||7||
then she lives eternally united with her Husband-God. ||4||7||
ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਪੱਕੇ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦੀ ਹੈ॥੪॥੭॥

Raag Aasaa, Fifth Guru:
ਦਾਨੁ ਦੇਇ ਕਰਿ ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰਨਾ ॥
daan day-ay kar poojaa karnaa.
O’ my friends, those Brahmins whom the hosts worship and give donations,
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਵੇਖੋ ਅਜੇਹੇ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਹਾਲ! ਜਜਮਾਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦਾਨ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਪੂਜਾ-ਮਾਨਤਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਲੈਤ ਦੇਤ ਉਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਮੂਕਰਿ ਪਰਨਾ ॥
lait dayt unH mookar parnaa.
even after receiving charity, they deny getting any donation.
ਉਹ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਭੀ (ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਭੀ) ਸਦਾ ਮੁੱਕਰੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ l
ਜਿਤੁ ਦਰਿ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਹੈ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਜਾਣਾ ॥
jit dar tumH hai baraahman jaanaa.
O Brahmin, remember that court of God where you have to ultimately go,
ਹੇ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ! (ਇਹ ਚੇਤਾ ਰੱਖ) ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਦਰ ਤੇ (ਆਖ਼ਿਰ) ਤੂੰ ਪਹੁੰਚਣਾ ਹੈ,
ਤਿਤੁ ਦਰਿ ਤੂੰਹੀ ਹੈ ਪਛੁਤਾਣਾ ॥੧॥
tit dar tooNhee hai pachhutaanaa. ||1||
at that door, it would be you who would repent for your past misdeeds. ||1||
ਉਸ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ (ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਕਰਤੂਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ) ਪਛੁਤਾਵੇਂਗਾ ॥੧॥
ਐਸੇ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਡੂਬੇ ਭਾਈ ॥
aisay baraahman doobay bhaa-ee.
O’ my brother, deem such Brahmins as drowned in worldly attachments,
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ) ਡੁੱਬੇ ਹੋਏ ਜਾਣੋ,
ਨਿਰਾਪਰਾਧ ਚਿਤਵਹਿ ਬੁਰਿਆਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
niraapraaDh chitvahi buri-aa-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
who keep thinking about causing harm even to the innocent people. ||1||Pause||
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਨਿਦੋਸੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਨੁਕਸਾਨ ਅਪੜਾਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਸੋਚਾਂ ਸੋਚਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਹਲਕਾਏ ॥
antar lobh fireh halkaa-ay.
Within them is greed and they wander around like mad dogs.
ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਲਾਲਚ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਹਲਕੇ ਕੁੱਤੇ ਦੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਭਾਰੁ ਉਠਾਏ ॥
nindaa karahi sir bhaar uthaa-ay.
They slander others and carry loads of sin upon them.
ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਲਾਲਚ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਹਲਕੇ ਕੁੱਤੇ ਦੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੂਠਾ ਚੇਤੈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
maa-i-aa moothaa chaytai naahee.
Captivated by greed for worldly riches, this Brahmin doesn’t remember God.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਹੱਥੋਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਰਾਸਿ ਲੁਟਾ ਬੈਠਾ ਇਹ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਚੇਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ
ਭਰਮੇ ਭੂਲਾ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਰਾਹੀ ॥੨॥
bharmay bhoolaa bahutee raahee. ||2||
Deluded by doubt, he wanders around on many paths. ||2||
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਕਈ ਪਾਸੀਂ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਬਾਹਰਿ ਭੇਖ ਕਰਹਿ ਘਨੇਰੇ ॥
baahar bhaykh karahi ghanayray.
Outwardly, these Brahmins wear various religious robes,
ਅਜੇਹੇ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਤਿਆਉਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ, ਕਈ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਭੇਖ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਉਤਰੀ ਘੇਰੇ ॥
antar bikhi-aa utree ghayray.
but their mind is captured by the Maya.
ਪਰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਤਾਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਘੇਰ ਕੇ ਡੇਰਾ ਪਾਈ ਬੈਠੀ ਹੈ।
ਅਵਰ ਉਪਦੇਸੈ ਆਪਿ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ॥
avar updaysai aap na boojhai.
They teach others, but do not understand themselves about righteousness.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤਾਂ ਧਰਮ ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਆਪ ਉਸ ਧਰਮ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ,
ਐਸਾ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣੁ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਸੀਝੈ ॥੩॥
aisa baraahman kahee na seejhai. ||3||
Such a Brahmin can never succeed anywhere. ||3||
ਅਜੇਹਾ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ (ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ) ਕਿਤੇ ਭੀ ਕਾਮਯਾਬ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ॥੩॥
ਮੂਰਖ ਬਾਮਣ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥
moorakh baaman parabhoo samaal.
O foolish Brahmin, meditate upon God.
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਿਆ ਕਰ.
ਦੇਖਤ ਸੁਨਤ ਤੇਰੈ ਹੈ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
daykhat sunat tayrai hai naal.
God always watches and hears you, and is always with you .
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਤੇਰੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਕੰਮ) ਵੇਖਦਾ (ਤੇਰੀਆਂ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ) ਸੁਣਦਾ (ਸਦਾ) ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੇ ਹੋਵੀ ਭਾਗੁ ॥
kaho naanak jay hovee bhaag.
O’ Nanak, tell to the Brahmin that if such be your destiny,
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਅਜੇਹੇ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਨੂੰ ਆਖ-) ਜੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਭਾਗ ਜਾਗਣ,
ਮਾਨੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣੀ ਲਾਗੁ ॥੪॥੮॥
maan chhod gur charnee laag. ||4||8||
then renounce the ego of your social status and worldly wisdom and humbly seek the refuge of the Guru. ||4||8||
ਤਾਂ (ਆਪਣੀ ਉੱਚੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਤੇ ਵਿੱਦਵਤਾ ਦਾ) ਮਾਣ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਉ
