ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਆਪਿ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ॥
barahm gi-aanee aap nirankaar.
The God-conscious person himself is the (embodiment of) Formless God.
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਗਿਆਨੀ (ਤਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਤੱਖ) ਆਪ ਹੀ ਰੱਬ ਹੈ।
ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਬਨੀ ॥
barahm gi-aanee kee sobhaa barahm gi-aanee banee.
The glory of the God-conscious person behooves only to the God-conscious.
ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਕੇਵਲ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਨੂੰ ਹੀਸਜਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਸਰਬ ਕਾ ਧਨੀ ॥੮॥੮॥
naanak barahm gi-aanee sarab kaa Dhanee. ||8||8||
O Nanak, the God-conscious person is the Master of all. ||8||8||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਬ੍ਰਹਮਗਿਆਨੀ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈ

ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰੈ ਜੋ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥
ur Dhaarai jo antar naam.
One who enshrines the Naam within the heart,
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਟਿਕਾ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਰਬ ਮੈ ਪੇਖੈ ਭਗਵਾਨੁ ॥
sarab mai paykhai bhagvaan.
who sees God pervading in all,
ਭਗਵਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਿਮਖ ਨਿਮਖ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਨਮਸਕਾਰੈ ॥
nimakh nimakh thaakur namaskaarai.
and who at every moment, bows in reverence to the Master,
ਜੋ ਪਲ ਪਲ ਆਪਣੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਣਾਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਓਹੁ ਅਪਰਸੁ ਸਗਲ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੈ ॥੧॥
naanak oh apras sagal nistaarai. ||1||
O’ Nanak, such a person is the true Aparas (saint untouched by Maya), and he helps those who follow him, to swim across the world-ocean of vices.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ (ਅਸਲੀ) ਅਪਰਸ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਤਾਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ l

ਮਿਥਿਆ ਨਾਹੀ ਰਸਨਾ ਪਰਸ ॥
mithi-aa naahee rasnaa paras.
One who never utters a lie, (from his tongue),
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜੀਭ ਨਾਲ ਝੂਠ ਨੂੰ ਛੋਹਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇਂਦਾ,
ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਦਰਸ ॥
man meh pareet niranjan daras.
in whose heart is a longing for the Blessed Vision of the immaculate God;
ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦੇ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਦੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ;
ਪਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਅ ਰੂਪੁ ਨ ਪੇਖੈ ਨੇਤ੍ਰ ॥
par tari-a roop na paykhai naytar.
whose eyes do not gaze upon the beauty of another’s woman with malice,
ਜੋ ਪਰਾਈ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੇ ਹੁਸਨ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਤੱਕਦਾ,
ਸਾਧ ਕੀ ਟਹਲ ਸੰਤਸੰਗਿ ਹੇਤ ॥
saaDh kee tahal satsang hayt.
who serves the Holy and loves the congregation of saints,
ਭਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਟਹਲ (ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਤੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ (ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ);
ਕਰਨ ਨ ਸੁਨੈ ਕਾਹੂ ਕੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ॥
karan na sunai kaahoo kee nindaa.
whose ears do not listen to slander against anyone,
ਜੋ ਕੰਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ ਭੀ ਨਿੰਦਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੁਣਦਾ,
ਸਭ ਤੇ ਜਾਨੈ ਆਪਸ ਕਉ ਮੰਦਾ ॥
sabh tay jaanai aapas ka-o mandaa.
who deems himself to be the worst of all (relinquishes ego),
ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਮਾੜਾ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਪਰਹਰੈ ॥
gur parsaad bikhi-aa parharai.
who, by the Guru’s Grace, gets rid of vices,
ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਦਾ ਸਦਕਾ ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ ਪੰਜੇ ਹੀ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਪਰੇ ਹਟਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਮਨ ਕੀ ਬਾਸਨਾ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਟਰੈ ॥
man kee baasnaa man tay tarai.
who banishes his desires from his mind,
ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਵਾਸਨਾ (ਫੁਰਨਾ) ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹਟਾ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਇੰਦ੍ਰੀ ਜਿਤ ਪੰਚ ਦੋਖ ਤੇ ਰਹਤ ॥
indree jit panch dokh tay rahat.
who conquers his senses and is free of the five vices.
ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਗਿਆਨ-ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖ ਕੇ ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ ਪੰਜੇ ਹੀ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਕੋਟਿ ਮਧੇ ਕੋ ਐਸਾ ਅਪਰਸ ॥੧॥
naanak kot maDhay ko aisaa apras. ||1||
O’ Nanak, among millions, there is scarcely one such Aparas.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਕਰੋੜਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਬੰਦਾ ਹੀ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਅਪਰਸ ਹੈ l
ਬੈਸਨੋ ਸੋ ਜਿਸੁ ਊਪਰਿ ਸੁਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ॥
baisno so jis oopar suparsan.
A true Vaishnava (devotee of Lord Vishnu), is the one with whom God is pleased.
ਜਿਸ ਉਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਤ੍ਰੁਠਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਹੈ ਅਸਲੀ ਵਿਸ਼ਨੂ ਦਾ ਪੁਜਾਰੀ।
ਬਿਸਨ ਕੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਤੇ ਹੋਇ ਭਿੰਨ ॥
bisan kee maa-i-aa tay ho-ay bhinn.
He remains detached from the Maya (worldly illusion) created by God.
ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਅਸਰ ਤੋਂ ਬੇ-ਦਾਗ਼ ਹੈ।
ਕਰਮ ਕਰਤ ਹੋਵੈ ਨਿਹਕਰਮ ॥
karam karat hovai nihkaram.
While doing good deeds, he doesn’t expect any reward.
ਉਹ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਫਲ ਦੀ ਇੱਛਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੱਖਦਾ
ਤਿਸੁ ਬੈਸਨੋ ਕਾ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਧਰਮ ॥
tis baisno kaa nirmal Dharam.
Spotlessly pure is the faith of such a Vaishnava.
ਉਸ ਵੈਸ਼ਨੋ ਦਾ ਧਰਮ (ਭੀ) ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ ।
ਕਾਹੂ ਫਲ ਕੀ ਇਛਾ ਨਹੀ ਬਾਛੈ ॥
kaahoo fal kee ichhaa nahee baachhai.
He doesn’t long for a reward for anything.
ਉਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਭੀ ਫਲ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਹਸ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ l
ਕੇਵਲ ਭਗਤਿ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਾਚੈ ॥
kayval bhagat keertan sang raachai.
He is absorbed only in devotional meditation and singing God’s praises.
ਉਹ ਨਿਰਾ ਭਗਤੀ ਤੇ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਮਨ ਤਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਗੋਪਾਲ ॥
man tan antar simran gopaal.
His mind and body are in constant remembrance of God.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਤਨ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਵੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਭ ਊਪਰਿ ਹੋਵਤ ਕਿਰਪਾਲ ॥
sabh oopar hovat kirpaal.
He is kind to all the creatures.
ਉਹ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਆਪਿ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੈ ਅਵਰਹ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਾਵੈ ॥
aap darirhai avrah naam japaavai.
He himself meditates on God’s Name and inspires others to do the same.
ਉਹ ਆਪ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ) ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਓਹੁ ਬੈਸਨੋ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੨॥
naanak oh baisno param gat paavai. ||2||
O’ Nanak, such a Vaishnav obtains the supreme spiritual status. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਵੈਸ਼ਨਵ ਉੱਚਾ ਦਰਜਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥
ਭਗਉਤੀ ਭਗਵੰਤ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਾ ਰੰਗੁ ॥
bhag-utee bhagvant bhagat kaa rang.
True devotee of God is the one whose heart is filled with devotional worship.
ਭਗਵਾਨ ਦਾ (ਅਸਲੀ) ਉਪਾਸ਼ਕ (ਉਹ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ) ਭਗਵਾਨ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੈ,
ਸਗਲ ਤਿਆਗੈ ਦੁਸਟ ਕਾ ਸੰਗੁ ॥
sagal ti-aagai dusat kaa sang.
He forsakes the company of all wicked people.
ਉਹ ਸਮੂਹ ਬਦ-ਚਲਣ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਸੁਹਬਤ ਛੱਡ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਮਨ ਤੇ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਸਗਲਾ ਭਰਮੁ ॥
man tay binsai saglaa bharam.
Every kind of doubt vanishes from his mind.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਹਰ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਵਹਿਮ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਕਰਿ ਪੂਜੈ ਸਗਲ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ॥
kar poojai sagal paarbarahm.
A devotee worships God with the belief that He is present everywhere.
ਉਹ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਜਾਣ ਕੇ ਪੂਜਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਪਾਪਾ ਮਲੁ ਖੋਵੈ ॥
saaDhsang paapaa mal khovai.
In the company of the saintly people, such a person gets rid of the dirt of all sins
ਉਹ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ (ਮਨ ਤੋਂ) ਦੂਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਤਿਸੁ ਭਗਉਤੀ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਊਤਮ ਹੋਵੈ ॥
tis bhag-utee kee mat ootam hovai.
The intellect of such a devotee of God becomes supreme.
ਉਸ ਭਗਉਤੀ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਉੱਚੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਭਗਵੰਤ ਕੀ ਟਹਲ ਕਰੈ ਨਿਤ ਨੀਤਿ ॥
bhagvant kee tahal karai nit neet.
He remembers God with love and devotion each and every day.
ਉਹ ਨਿੱਤ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਅਰਪੈ ਬਿਸਨ ਪਰੀਤਿ ॥
man tan arpai bisan pareet.
He dedicates his mind and body to the Love of God.
ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਿਆਰ ਤੋਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਤਨ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਚਰਨ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਬਸਾਵੈ ॥
har kay charan hirdai basaavai.
He enshrines God’s feet (love) in the heart.
ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਐਸਾ ਭਗਉਤੀ ਭਗਵੰਤ ਕਉ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੩॥
naanak aisaa bhag-utee bhagvant ka-o paavai. ||3||
O’ Nanak, such a (Bhagauti) devotee of God realizes Him (within his heart). ||3||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਅਜੇਹਾ ਭਗਉਤੀ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਲੱਭ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਸੋ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਜੋ ਮਨੁ ਪਰਬੋਧੈ ॥
so pandit jo man parboDhai.
A true Pandit is the one, who first instructs his own mind;
(ਅਸਲੀ) ਪੰਡਿਤ ਉਹ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਆਤਮ ਮਹਿ ਸੋਧੈ ॥
raam naam aatam meh soDhai.
and searches for God’s Name within his own soul.
ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਭਾਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਸਾਰੁ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਵੈ ॥
raam naam saar ras peevai.
He partakes the exquisite Nectar of God’s Name.
ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਮਿੱਠਾ ਸੁਆਦ ਚੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਉਸੁ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਕੈ ਉਪਦੇਸਿ ਜਗੁ ਜੀਵੈ ॥
us pandit kai updays jag jeevai.
By the teachings of such a Pundit, the entire world remains spiritually alive.
ਉਸ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਨਾਲ (ਸਾਰਾ) ਸੰਸਾਰ ਰੂਹਾਨੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਕਥਾ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਬਸਾਵੈ ॥
har kee kathaa hirdai basaavai.
He implants God’s virtues in his heart.
ਉਹ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ (ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ) ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸੋ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੋਨਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥
so pandit fir jon na aavai.
Such a Pandit does not fall into the cycles of birth and death again.
ਅਜੇਹਾ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਮੁੜ ਜਨਮ (ਮਰਨ) ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ।
ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਮੂਲ ॥
bayd puraan simrit boojhai mool.
He recognizes God as the source of holy scriptures, such as Vedas, Puranas and Smritis.
ਉਹ ਵੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ (ਸਭ ਧਰਮ-ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ) ਦਾ ਮੁੱਢ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਸੂਖਮ ਮਹਿ ਜਾਨੈ ਅਸਥੂਲੁ ॥
sookham meh jaanai asthool.
He recognizes the intangible God in the tangible creation.
ਉਹ ਅਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟਮਾਨ ਜਗਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਅਨੁਭਵ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਚਹੁ ਵਰਨਾ ਕਉ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ॥
chahu varnaa ka-o day updays.
He preaches to the people of all the four castes (social status).
ਉਹ (ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ, ਖਤ੍ਰੀ, ਵੈਸ਼, ਸ਼ੂਦਰ) ਚਾਰੇ ਹੀ ਜਾਤੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਉਸੁ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਕਉ ਸਦਾ ਅਦੇਸੁ ॥੪॥
naanak us pandit ka-o sadaa adays. ||4||
O Nanak, to such a Pandit, I bow in salutation forever. ||4||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਅਜੇਹੇ ਪੰਡਤ ਨੂੰ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਣਾਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਬੀਜ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ ਸਰਬ ਕੋ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥ ਚਹੁ ਵਰਨਾ ਮਹਿ ਜਪੈ ਕੋਊ ਨਾਮੁ ॥
beej mantar sarab ko gi-aan.chahu varnaa meh japai ko-oo naam.
Let anyone of the four casts (social status) meditate on God’s Name, and one would find that God’s Name is the root mantra of all divine knowledge.
ਚਾਰੇ ਹੀ ਜਾਤੀਆਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਕੇ ਵੇਖ ਲਏ, ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਮੰਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਢ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਅਤੇ ਸਭ ਦਾ ਗਿਆਨ ਦਾਤਾ ਹੈ,
ਜੋ ਜੋ ਜਪੈ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
jo jo japai tis kee gat ho-ay.
Whoever contemplates on Naam has an embellished life.
ਜੋ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਚਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਉੱਚੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਇ ॥
saaDhsang paavai jan ko-ay.
Yet, only a very rare person receives the gift of Naam in the company of saints.
ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ (ਰਹਿ ਕੇ) (ਇਸ ਨੂੰ) ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਉਰ ਧਾਰੈ ॥
kar kirpaa antar ur Dhaarai.
If by His grace, God enshrines His Name in the heart of a person,
(ਜੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ (ਨਾਮ) ਟਿਕਾ ਦੇਵੇ,
ਪਸੁ ਪ੍ਰੇਤ ਮੁਘਦ ਪਾਥਰ ਕਉ ਤਾਰੈ ॥
pas parayt mughad paathar ka-o taarai.
even if that person is like an animal, a ghost, a fool or a stone hearted, that person is saved.
ਪਸ਼ੂ, ਚੰਦਰੀ ਰੂਹ, ਮੂਰਖ, ਪੱਥਰ-ਦਿਲ (ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਹੋਵੇ ਸਭ) ਨੂੰ (ਨਾਮ) ਤਾਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਰਬ ਰੋਗ ਕਾ ਅਉਖਦੁ ਨਾਮੁ ॥
sarab rog kaa a-ukhad naam.
The Name of God is the remedy to cure all ills.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਾਰੇ ਰੋਗਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਵਾਈ ਹੈ,
ਕਲਿਆਣ ਰੂਪ ਮੰਗਲ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਮ ॥
kali-aan roop mangal gun gaam.
Singing God’s praises leads to good fortune and bliss.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉਣੇ ਚੰਗੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਤੇ ਸੁਖ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ।
ਕਾਹੂ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਕਿਤੈ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਧਰਮਿ ॥
kaahoo jugat kitai na paa-ee-ai Dharam.
Naam cannot be obtained by any specific technique or religious rituals.
ਨਾਮ ਕਿਸੇ ਢੰਗ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਰਸਮ ਰਿਵਾਜ ਦੇ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ l
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਧੁਰਿ ਕਰਮਿ ॥੫॥
naanak tis milai jis likhi-aa Dhur karam. ||5||
O Nanak, he alone receives it, who is so pre-ordained. ||5||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ!ਨਾਮ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਤੇ ਧੁਰੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਜਿਸ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਕਾ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥
jis kai man paarbarahm kaa nivaas.
One in whose mind dwells the Supreme God,
ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ,
