ਨਰ ਨਿਹਕੇਵਲ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਾਉ ॥
nar nihkayval nirbha-o naa-o.
By meditating on God’s Name people become fearless and free from vices.
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਕੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਹੱਲਿਆਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਹੋ ਕੇ) ਵਾਸਨਾ-ਰਹਿਤ (ਸ਼ੁੱਧ) ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅਨਾਥਹ ਨਾਥ ਕਰੇ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥
anaathah naath karay bal jaa-o.
I dedicate myself to God, who turns the support less into the support of all.
ਉਹ ਨਿਖਸਮਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਖਸਮ ਵਾਲਾ ਬਣਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਹ ਹੈ ਅਸਲ ਜੋਗੀ, ਤੇ ਅਜੇਹੇ ਜੋਗੀ ਤੋਂ) ਮੈਂ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਹਾਂ।
ਪੁਨਰਪਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉ ॥੫॥
punrap janam naahee gun gaa-o. ||5||
He sings God’s praises and dosn’t fall into the rounds of births and deaths. ||5||
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਜਨਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੈਣਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
antar baahar ayko jaanai.
He beholds God pervading everywhere, both within and without.
ਉਹ ਜੋਗੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਤੇ ਬਾਹਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦੇ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
gur kai sabday aap pachhaanai.
Through the Guru’s word, he realizes himself.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਅਸਲੇ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਦਰਿ ਨੀਸਾਣੈ ॥੬॥
saachai sabad dar neesaanai. ||6||
He arrives at God’s court with the stamp of the Guru’s word. ||6||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਜੋਗੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ (ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ) ਰਾਹਦਾਰੀ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ॥
sabad marai tis nij ghar vaasaa.
One who, through the Guru’s word, becomes immune to the worldly yearnings dwells in God’s presence (in his heart).
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਸਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਤਰ ਆਤਮੇ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਵੈ ਨ ਜਾਵੈ ਚੂਕੈ ਆਸਾ ॥
aavai na jaavai chookai aasaa.
All his desires end and he becomes free from the cycles of birth and death
ਉਸ ਦੀ ਆਸਾ (ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ) ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ।
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਕਮਲੁ ਪਰਗਾਸਾ ॥੭॥
gur kai sabad kamal pargaasaa. ||7||
He feels delighted through the Guru’s word. ||7||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਹਿਰਦਾ-ਕੌਲ ਸਦਾ ਖਿੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਸੋ ਆਸ ਨਿਰਾਸਾ ॥
jo deesai so aas niraasaa.
Whosoever is seen in the world looks immersed in hope, despair,
ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਜੋ ਭੀ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਢੱਠੀਆਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਆਸਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੀ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ (ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਆਸਾਂ ਕਦੇ ਪੂਰੀਆਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ)।
ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਬਿਖੁ ਭੂਖ ਪਿਆਸਾ ॥
kaam karoDh bikh bhookh pi-aasaa.
lust, anger and longing for the poison of Maya (worldly riches and power).
ਹਰੇਕ ਨੂੰ ਕਾਮ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਹਰ (ਮਾਰਦਾ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਹਰੇਕ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਭੁੱਖ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਤ੍ਰੇਹ (ਲੱਗੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ)।
ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਰਲੇ ਮਿਲਹਿ ਉਦਾਸਾ ॥੮॥੭॥
naanak birlay mileh udaasaa. ||8||7||
O’ Nanak, one rarely comes across such people who are truly detached from the worldly temptations. ||8||7||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਬੜੇ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਐਸੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਮਿਲਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਆਸਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੇ ਅਧੀਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ (ਤੇ, ਉਹੀ ਹਨ ਅਸਲ ਜੋਗੀ) ॥੮॥੭॥

Raag Gauree, First Guru:
ਐਸੋ ਦਾਸੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
aiso daas milai sukh ho-ee.
Celestial peace wells up within the one, who meets such a devotee of God.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਦਾਸ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ) ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਦੁਖੁ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਪਾਵੈ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਈ ॥੧॥
dukh visrai paavai sach so-ee. ||1||
He realizes the eternal God and all his sorrows end. ||1||
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਦੁੱਖ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਢੁੱਕਦਾ ॥੧॥
ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਭਈ ਮਤਿ ਪੂਰੀ ॥
darsan daykh bha-ee mat pooree.
Upon seeing the sight of such a devotee, one’s intellect becomes perfect.
ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਦਾਸ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ)ਦਰਸਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਅਕਲ ਪੂਰੀ (ਸੂਝ ਵਾਲੀ) ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਅਠਸਠਿ ਮਜਨੁ ਚਰਨਹ ਧੂਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
athsath majan charnah Dhooree. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The merit of bathing at all sixty eight holy places lies in humbly following his teachings. ||1||Pause||
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ) ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ (ਹੀ) ਅਠਾਹਠ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਨੇਤ੍ਰ ਸੰਤੋਖੇ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਤਾਰਾ ॥
naytar santokhay ayk liv taaraa.
His eyes feel contented and His mind is attuned to the God.
ਉਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ (ਪਰਾਇਆ ਰੂਪ ਤੱਕਣ ਵਲੋਂ) ਰੱਜ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸੁਰਤ ਦੀ ਤਾਰ ਇੱਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਹਵਾ ਸੂਚੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਸਾਰਾ ॥੨॥
jihvaa soochee har ras saaraa. ||2||
His tongue becomes purified by the most sublime essence of God’s name. ||2||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਰਸ ਚੱਖ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜੀਭ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਸਚੁ ਕਰਣੀ ਅਭ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸੇਵਾ ॥
sach karnee abh antar sayvaa.
The intuitive meditation on Naam becomes his daily routine.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਉਸ ਦੀ (ਨਿੱਤ ਦੀ) ਕਰਣੀ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਸਿਆ ਅਲਖ ਅਭੇਵਾ ॥੩॥
man tariptaasi-aa alakh abhayvaa. ||3||
His mind is satisfied by the devotional worship of the incomprehensible and unfathomable God. ||3||
ਅਲੱਖ ਤੇ ਅਭੇਵ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਸੇਵਾ-ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ (ਮਾਇਆ ਵਲੋਂ) ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਜਹ ਜਹ ਦੇਖਉ ਤਹ ਤਹ ਸਾਚਾ ॥
jah jah daykh-a-u tah tah saachaa.
Wherever I look, there I behold the eternal God.
ਮੈਂ ਜਿੱਧਰ ਤੱਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਉਧਰ ਉਧਰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਝਗਰਤ ਜਗੁ ਕਾਚਾ ॥੪॥
bin boojhay jhagrat jag kaachaa. ||4||
Without realizing God, the ignorant world is fighting unnecessarily. ||4||
ਪਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਟਾਕਰੇ ਤੇ ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰ ਮਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਜਗਤ ਇਸ ਗਿਆਨ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਾ ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਖਹਿ ਖਹਿ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਗੁਰੁ ਸਮਝਾਵੈ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਈ ॥
gur samjhaavai sojhee ho-ee.
This realization that God permeates everywhere is attained only when the Guru imparts this teachings.
ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ ਉਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਦੇਵੇ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੫॥
gurmukh virlaa boojhai ko-ee. ||5||
Only a rare Guru’s follower understands this fact. ||5||
ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਰਖਵਾਲੇ ॥
kar kirpaa raakho rakhvaalay.
O’ Savior, bestow mercy and save the people from futile scuffle.,
ਹੇ ਰੱਖਣਹਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ, ਤੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਖਹਿ ਖਹਿ ਤੋਂ) ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਬਚਾ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਪਸੂ ਭਏ ਬੇਤਾਲੇ ॥੬॥
bin boojhay pasoo bha-ay baytaalay. ||6||
Without attaining divine wisdom, people become like beasts and demons. ||6||
ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਗਿਆਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੀਵ ਪਸ਼ੂ (-ਸੁਭਾਵ) ਬਣ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ, ਭੂਤਨੇ ਹੋ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ॥੬॥
ਗੁਰਿ ਕਹਿਆ ਅਵਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਦੂਜਾ ॥
gur kahi-aa avar nahee doojaa.
The Guru has said that except God there is no other at all like Him.
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਸਮਝਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਸ ਵਰਗਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
ਕਿਸੁ ਕਹੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਕਰਉ ਅਨ ਪੂਜਾ ॥੭॥
kis kaho daykh kara-o an poojaa. ||7||
So tell me, who should I see and upon whom should meditate? ||7||
ਦੱਸੋ, (ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਮੈਂ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ (ਉਸ ਵਰਗਾ) ਦੇਖ ਕੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਦੀ ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ? ॥੭॥
ਸੰਤ ਹੇਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਧਾਰੇ ॥
sant hayt parabh taribhavan Dhaaray.
God established the three worlds to convert ordinary people into saints.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ (ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਸੰਤ ਬਣਾਣ ਲਈ ਇਹ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਰਚੀ ਹੈ।
ਆਤਮੁ ਚੀਨੈ ਸੁ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥੮॥
aatam cheenai so tat beechaaray. ||8||
One who reflects on himself realizes this reality. ||8||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ) ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਇਸ ਅਸਲੀਅਤ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥
ਸਾਚੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਸਚੁ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨਿਵਾਸ ॥
saach ridai sach paraym nivaas.
The true saint is the One within whose heart is enshrined true love for God.
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਰਿਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਮ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਦਾਸ ॥੯॥੮॥
paranvat naanak ham taa kay daas. ||9||8||
Nanak submit that I am his humble devotee. ||9||8||
ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,-ਮੈਂ ਭੀ ਉਸ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਦਾਸ ਹਾਂ ॥੯॥੮॥

Raag Gauree, First Guru
ਬ੍ਰਹਮੈ ਗਰਬੁ ਕੀਆ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥
barahmai garab kee-aa nahee jaani-aa.
Brahma indulged in ego and did not understand the limitless power of God.
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਨੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਇਤਨਾ ਵੱਡਾ ਹਾਂ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਬੇਅੰਤਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਿਆ।
ਬੇਦ ਕੀ ਬਿਪਤਿ ਪੜੀ ਪਛੁਤਾਨਿਆ ॥
bayd kee bipat parhee pachhutaani-aa.
When the pain of the loss of the Vedas overwhelmed him, he repented.
ਵੇਦਾਂ ਦੇ ਚੁਰਾਏ ਜਾਣ ਦੀ ਮੁਸੀਬਤ ਪੈ ਜਾਣ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਪਸਚਾਤਾਪ ਕੀਤਾ।
ਜਹ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਿਮਰੇ ਤਹੀ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥੧॥
jah parabh simray tahee man maani-aa. ||1||
Only when he meditated on God did his mind realize that it was God who is the greatest, and not he. ||1||
ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਤਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਯਕੀਨ ਆਇਆ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਐਸਾ ਗਰਬੁ ਬੁਰਾ ਸੰਸਾਰੈ ॥
aisaa garab buraa sansaarai.
Such is the horrible pride in the world.
ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਇਕ ਐਸਾ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਬਹੁਤ ਭੈੜਾ ਹੈ,
ਜਿਸੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਗਰਬੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jis gur milai tis garab nivaarai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The Guru eliminates the pride of the one, who is blessed with his teachings. ||1||Pause||
ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਗੁਰੂ) ਉਸ ਦਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਬਲਿ ਰਾਜਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥
bal raajaa maa-i-aa ahaNkaaree.
Bal the King, in Maya and egotism,
ਰਾਜੇ ਬਲਿ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮਾਣ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ।
ਜਗਨ ਕਰੈ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਰ ਅਫਾਰੀ ॥
jagan karai baho bhaar afaaree.
performed many holy rituals and became proud of his wealth.
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਬੜੇ ਜੱਗ ਕੀਤੇ। ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਬਹੁਤ ਆਫਰਿਆ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਛੇ ਜਾਇ ਪਇਆਰੀ ॥੨॥
bin gur poochhay jaa-ay pa-i-aaree. ||2||
In ego, he ignored his Guru’s advice and was thrown into the underworld. ||2||
ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਲਾਹ ਲੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਤਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਜਾਣਾ ਪਿਆ। ॥੨॥
ਹਰੀਚੰਦੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਕਰੈ ਜਸੁ ਲੇਵੈ ॥
hareechand daan karai jas layvai.
King Hari Chand gave in charity and earned public praise.
(ਰਾਜਾ) ਹਰੀਚੰਦ (ਭੀ) ਦਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਸੀ, (ਦਾਨ ਦੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਮਸਤ ਰਿਹਾ)।
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇ ਅਭੇਵੈ ॥
bin gur ant na paa-ay abhayvai.
But without the Guru, he did not find the limits of the Mysterious God. (in whose realm there are benefactors, far greater than him).
ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਹ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਭੇਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਿਆ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਵਿਚ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਦਾਨੀ ਹਨ।
ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਇ ਆਪੇ ਮਤਿ ਦੇਵੈ ॥੩॥
aap bhulaa-ay aapay mat dayvai. ||3||
God Himself leads people astray and Himself bestows the wisdom. ||3||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਭੁਲਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਅਕਲ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਹਰਣਾਖਸੁ ਦੁਰਾਚਾਰੀ ॥
durmat harnaakhas duraachaaree.
Swayed by malicious intellect, Harnakash became a man of evil conduct.
ਭੈੜੀ ਮਤਿ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਹਰਣਾਖਸ ਦੁਰਾਚਾਰੀ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ (ਅੱਤਿਆਚਾਰ ਕਰਨ ਲੱਗ ਪਿਆ)।
ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਨਾਰਾਇਣੁ ਗਰਬ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰੀ ॥
parabh naaraa-in garab par-haaree.
God of the universe is the destroyer of ego.
ਪਰ ਨਾਰਾਇਣ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀਆਂ ਦਾ) ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।
ਪ੍ਰਹਲਾਦ ਉਧਾਰੇ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੀ ॥੪॥
parahlaad uDhaaray kirpaa Dhaaree. ||4||
He showed mercy on Prahalad and saved him. ||4||
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਮਿਹਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦ ਦੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕੀਤੀ (ਹਰਣਾਖਸ ਦਾ ਮਾਣ ਤੋੜਿਆ) ॥੪॥
ਭੂਲੋ ਰਾਵਣੁ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਅਚੇਤਿ ॥
bhoolo raavan mugaDh achayt.
Foolish and arrogant king Ravana forgot God.
ਮੂਰਖ ਰਾਵਣ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ ਵਿਚ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪੈ ਗਿਆ।
ਲੂਟੀ ਲੰਕਾ ਸੀਸ ਸਮੇਤਿ ॥
lootee lankaa sees samayt.
As a result his kingdom of Sri Lanka was plundered and he lost his life.
(ਸਿੱਟਾ ਇਹ ਨਿਕਲਿਆ ਕਿ) ਉਸ ਦੀ ਲੰਕਾ ਲੁੱਟੀ ਗਈ, ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਿਰ ਭੀ ਕੱਟਿਆ ਗਿਆ।
ਗਰਬਿ ਗਇਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹੇਤਿ ॥੫॥
garab ga-i-aa bin satgur hayt. ||5||
Being without the Guru’s teachings, he was destroyed by his ego. ||5||
ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਦੇ ਮਦ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਰਾਵਣ ਤਬਾਹ ਹੋਇਆ ॥੫॥
ਸਹਸਬਾਹੁ ਮਧੁ ਕੀਟ ਮਹਿਖਾਸਾ ॥
sahasbaahu maDh keet mahikhaasaa.
God also destroyed many other egotistical demons.
ਸਹਸਬਾਹੂ (ਨੂੰ ਪਰਸ ਰਾਮ ਨੇ ਮਾਰਿਆ,) ਮਧੁ ਤੇ ਕੈਟਭ (ਨੂੰ ਵਿਸ਼ਨੂੰ ਨੇ ਮਾਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ) ਮਹਿਖਾਸੁਰ (ਦੁਰਗਾ ਦੇ ਹੱਥੋਂ ਮਰਿਆ,)
ਹਰਣਾਖਸੁ ਲੇ ਨਖਹੁ ਬਿਧਾਸਾ ॥
harnaakhas lay nakhahu biDhaasaa.
Seizing him, God (as a man-lion) tore up Harnakash with His nails .
ਹਰਣਾਖਸ ਨੂੰ (ਨਰਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ) ਨਹੁੰਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਮਾਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
ਦੈਤ ਸੰਘਾਰੇ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਅਭਿਆਸਾ ॥੬॥
dait sanghaaray bin bhagat abhi-aasaa. ||6||
Yes, God killed all those demons who did not practice devotional worship ||6||
ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੈਂਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਦੇ ਅੱਭਿਆਸ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਕਰਕੇ (ਆਪਣੀ ਮੂਰਖਤਾ ਦੀ ਸਜ਼ਾ ਭੁਗਤਦੇ) ਮਾਰੇ ਗਏ ॥੬॥
ਜਰਾਸੰਧਿ ਕਾਲਜਮੁਨ ਸੰਘਾਰੇ ॥
jaraasanDh kaalajmun sanghaaray.
The demons Jarasandh and Kaljamna were Killed by Lord Krishana.
ਜਰਾਸੰਧਿ ਤੇ ਕਾਲਜਮੁਨ (ਕ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਹੱਥੋਂ) ਮਾਰੇ ਗਏ।
ਰਕਤਬੀਜੁ ਕਾਲੁਨੇਮੁ ਬਿਦਾਰੇ ॥
rakatbeej kaalunaym bidaaray.
Rakat-beej and Kaal-naym were annihilated.
ਰਕਤ ਬੀਜ ਤੇ ਕਾਲਨੇਮ ਨੂੰ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਨੇ ਹੀ ਲਿਆ।)
ਦੈਤ ਸੰਘਾਰਿ ਸੰਤ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥੭॥
dait sanghaar sant nistaaray. ||7||
Slaying the demons, God saved His Saints. ||7||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਦੈਂਤ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕੀਤੀ ॥੭॥
ਆਪੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥
aapay satgur sabad beechaaray.
He Himself, as the True Guru, contemplates on the divine word of his praises.
(ਇਸ ਸਾਰੀ ਖੇਡ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ) ਆਪ ਹੀ ਗੁਰੂ-ਰੂਪ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਚਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
