Guru Granth Sahib is the Holy Book and the foremost religious scripture in Sikhism; it is the last paraphrase of godhead, considered sovereign, eternal, and alive. Guru Arjan, the fifth Sikh Guru, compiled it back in 1604. It contains the hymns of Sikh Gurus with other saints from different religious and cultural backgrounds. The scripture is made up of 1,430 pages known as Angs, which represent a wide spectrum of life and spirituality with an absolute focus on devotion to God, living a truthful and moral life, and one humanity.
The Guru Granth Sahib is written in Gurmukhi script and contains the Sikh Gurus, other saints, and poets of quite diverse origins, who possess universally powerful writings, which are only so through a message of divine unity, love, and compassion. It is divided into 1430 pages, Ang’s, and structured by musical measures called Raags.
ਮਿਲੁ ਸਖੀ ਸਹੇਲੀ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਬਨੇ ॥
mil sakhee sahaylee har gun banay.
O’ my friends, it behooves us to join together and sing God’s praises.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਸਖੀ ਸਹੇਲੀਹੋ! ਰਲ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਣੇ ਹੀ ਫਬਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਮਨੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਮਲੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਖੋਇ ॥੩॥
man gurmukh nirmal mal sabad kho-ay. ||3||
But by reflecting on the Guru’s word, the mind loses its dirt of vices and becomes immaculate. ||3||
ਪਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪੈ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਦਾ ਨਾਸ਼ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮਨ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਦਰਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਭਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
dar saachai sach sobhaa ho-ay.
One in whose heart is enshrined the eternal God, is honored in His presence,
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ (ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ) ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥
satgur banee sabad sunaa-ay.
The true Guru’s word recites the divine message,
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਸੁਣਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਜਨ ਕੇ ਸਾਸ ਸਾਸ ਹੈ ਜੇਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਰਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹਰਿ ਬੀਧੇ ॥
jan kay saas saas hai jaytay har bireh parabhoo har beeDhay.
As many breaths a true devotee breathes in his life, they are all pierced with the pangs of separation from God’s love,
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਭਗਤ (ਦੀ ਉਮਰ) ਦੇ ਜਿਤਨੇ ਭੀ ਸਾਹ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ-ਭਰੇ ਵਿਛੋੜੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਿੱਝੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਬਸੰਤੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ਘਰੁ ੧ ਦੁਤੁਕੇ

Raag Basant, Fifth Guru, First Beat, Two-liners:
ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਕਾਟਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਕਰੇ ॥
parabh kaat mail nirmal karay.
By removing the dirt of vices, God has made those persons immaculate,
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਕੱਟ ਕੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਬਣਾ ਲਿਆ,
ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਹਿ ਆਪੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
gur sabad beechaareh aap jaa-ay.
If you reflect on the word of the Guru, your ego will depart,
ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਸੁਰਤ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾ ਰੱਖੇਂ, ਤਾਂ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਏਗਾ,
ਪੂੰਜੀ ਹਿਰਾਨੀ ਬਨਜੁ ਟੂਟ ॥
poonjee hiraanee banaj toot.
when one’s capital of life breaths is finished, his business in the world ends,
ਜਦੋਂ (ਸੁਆਸਾਂ ਦੀ) ਰਾਸ ਖੁੱਸ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ ਵਣਜ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
