ik-oNkaar sat naam kartaa purakh nirbha-o nirvair akaal moorat ajoonee saibhaN gur parsaad.
There is only one Divine whose Name is “existentially True.” He is the creator of the universe, all-pervading, without fear, without enmity, independent of time, beyond the cycle of birth and death, and self-revealed. He is realized by the Guru’s grace.
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ‘ਹੋਂਦ ਵਾਲਾ’ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦਾ ਰਚਨਹਾਰ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਸਭ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ, ਭੈ ਤੋਂ ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ, ਵੈਰ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੂਪ ਕਾਲ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ, (ਭਾਵ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਨਾਸ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ), ਜੋ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਤੋਂ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਇਸ ਸਾਰੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ‘ਜਪੁ’ ਹੈ।
aad sach jugaad sach.
The Divine has existed from the beginning and throughout the ages.
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਮੁੱਢ ਤੋਂ ਹੋਂਦ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਜੁਗਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਢ ਤੋਂ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ।
hai bhee sach naanak hosee bhee sach. ||1||
O’ Nanak, He is true (exists) now and will always be true (exists).
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਇਸ ਵੇਲੇ ਭੀ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਅਗਾਂਹ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਹੋਂਦ ਵਾਲਾ ਰਹੇਗਾ
sochai soch na hova-ee jay sochee lakh vaar.
Cleansing the body by taking millions of baths does not clean the mind from the filth of evil thoughts.
ਲੱਖ ਵਾਰੀ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਆਦਿਕ ਨਾਲ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੀ ਸੁੱਚ ਰੱਖਣ ਨਾਲ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਸੁੱਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ।
chupai chup na hova-ee jay laa-ay rahaa liv taar.
Mind does not stop wandering by keeping silent, even by constant ritualistic meditation.
ਇਕ-ਤਾਰ ਸਮਾਧੀ ਲਾਈ ਰੱਖਣ ਨਾਲ (ਚੁੱਪ ਕਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਨਾਲ) ਮਨ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ।
bhukhi-aa bhukh na utree jay bannaa puree-aa bhaar.
Desire for material wealth is not appeased, even by collecting the material wealth of the entire world.
ਸਾਰੇ ਭਵਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਢੇਰ ਸਾਂਭਣਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਭੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ।
sahas si-aanpaa lakh hohi ta ik na chalai naal.
One may have millions of clever ideas, but none of them will help at the end.
ਹਜ਼ਾਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਚਤੁਰਾਈਆਂ ਹੋਵਣ, (ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਇਕ ਭੀ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਸਾਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇਂਦੀ।
kiv sachi-aaraa ho-ee-ai kiv koorhai tutai paal.
So, how can we become heavenly and tear away the wall of illusion that separates us from the Divine?
ਤਾਂ ਫਿਰ ਅਸੀਂ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸੱਚੇ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਝੂਠ ਦਾ ਪੜਦਾ ਟੁੱਟ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?
hukam rajaa-ee chalnaa naanak likhi-aa naal. ||1||
The answer is that we should live according to the Divine’s command, which, O’ Nanak, is written in our destiny from the very beginning.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰਨਾ-(ਇਹੀ ਇਕ ਵਿਧੀ ਹੈ), ਇਹ ਵਿਧੀ ਧੁਰ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਜਦ ਤੋਂ ਜਗਤ ਬਣਿਆ ਹੈ, ਲਿਖੀ ਚਲੀ ਆ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ l
hukmee hovan aakaar hukam na kahi-aa jaa-ee.
Everything is created by His command; His command cannot be described.
ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਬਣਦੇ ਹਨ, ਇਹ ਹੁਕਮ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਕਿ ਕਿਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
hukmee hovan jee-a hukam milai vadi-aa-ee.
All creatures are created by The Divine’s command; inner bliss is also received by His command.
ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੀ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ ਜੰਮਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੀ ਸ਼ੋਭਾ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ।
hukmee utam neech hukam likh dukh sukh paa-ee-ah.
By the Divine’s will, some are virtuous and others are wicked. By His will, based on their past deeds, some suffer pain while others enjoy bliss.
ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਚੰਗਾ (ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ) ਹੈ, ਕੋਈ ਭੈੜਾ। ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ (ਆਪਣੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ) ਲਿਖੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਦੁੱਖ ਤੇ ਸੁਖ ਭੋਗੀਦੇ ਹਨ।
iknaa hukmee bakhsees ik hukmee sadaa bhavaa-ee-ah.
By His Command, some are blessed; by His Command others wander aimlessly forever.
ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਕਦੀ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ (ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਕਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਿੱਤ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਭਵਾਈਦੇ ਹਨ।
hukme andar sabh ko baahar hukam na ko-ay.
Everyone is subject to His Command; no one is beyond His Command.
ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਹੈ, ਕੋਈ ਜੀਵ ਹੁਕਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ (ਹੁਕਮ ਤੋ ਆਕੀ) ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ।
nanak hukme jay bujhai ta ha-umai kahai na ko-ay. ||2||
O’ Nanak, if one comprehends His Command, then he does not behave egotistically.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੇਕਰ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਫੁਰਮਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਲਵੇ, ਤਦ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਨਾਂ ਕਰੇ।
gaavai ko taan hovai kisai taan.
One praises the Divine (only) if he is blessed by Him.
ਜਿਸ ਕਿਸੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਰਥਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਤਾਣ ਨੂੰ ਗਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
gaave ko daat jaanai neesan.
Some sing to thank the Divine for His benevolence.
ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਗਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਰੱਬ ਦੀ ਰਹਿਮਤ ਦਾ) ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ।
gaavai ko gun vadi-aa-ee-aa chaar.
Some sing of His noble virtues and His greatness.
ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਗੁਣ ਤੇ ਸੋਹਣੀਆਂ ਵਡਿਆਈਆਂ ਵਰਣਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
gaave ko vidi-aa vikhman vichaar.
Through power of their education, some sing and praise Divineâs difficult knowledge.
ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਦੇ ਬਲ ਨਾਲ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦੇ ਕਠਨ ਗਿਆਨ ਨੂੰ ਗਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
gaava ko saaj karay tan khayh.
Some sing of Divine’s power to create the body and then to reduce it to dust.
ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਉਂ ਗਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ‘ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ (ਫਿਰ) ਸੁਆਹ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ’।
gaave ko jee-a lai fir dayh.
Some sing that He takes away life and then gives it again in another form.
ਕੋਈ ਇਉਂ ਗਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ‘ਹਰੀ ਸਰੀਰਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਜਿੰਦਾਂ ਕੱਢ ਕੇ ਫਿਰ ਵਾਪਸ ਸਰੀਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ’।

Some sing that Divine seems to be spiritually far away.
ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ‘ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦੂਰ ਜਾਪਦਾ ਹੈ, ਦੂਰ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ’;
