Raag Nat Naaraayan, Fourth Mehl:
ੴ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik-oNkaar sat naam kartaa purakh nirbha-o nirvair akaal moorat ajoonee saibhaN gur parsaad.
There is only one God whose Name is ‘of eternal existence’. He is the creator of the universe, all-pervading, without fear, without enmity, independent of time, beyond the cycle of birth and death and self revealed. He is realized by the Guru’s grace.
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ‘ਹੋਂਦ ਵਾਲਾ’ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦਾ ਰਚਨਹਾਰ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਸਭ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ, ਭੈ ਤੋਂ ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ, ਵੈਰ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੂਪ ਕਾਲ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ, (ਭਾਵ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਨਾਸ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ), ਜੋ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਤੋਂ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਜਪਿ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰੇ ॥
mayray man jap ahinis naam haray.
O’ my mind, always meditate on God’s Name.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ (ਸਦਾ) ਜਪਿਆ ਕਰ।
ਕੋਟਿ ਕੋਟਿ ਦੋਖ ਬਹੁ ਕੀਨੇ ਸਭ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਪਾਸਿ ਧਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kot kot dokh baho keenay sabh parhar paas Dharay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Even if one has committed millions of sins, God’s Name casts away and lays aside all those sins. ||1||Pause||
ਜੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਤੇ ਕ੍ਰੋੜਾਂ ਪਾਪ ਭੀ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਹੋਣ, ਤਾਂ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ) ਸਭਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਲਾਂਭੇ ਸੁੱਟ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹਿ ਆਰਾਧਹਿ ਸੇਵਕ ਭਾਇ ਖਰੇ ॥
har har naam jaapeh aaraaDheh sayvak bhaa-ay kharay.
Those who devotedly worship and meditate on God’s Name, their life becomes righteous.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੇਵਕ-ਭਾਵਨਾ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦੇ ਆਰਾਧਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਸੁੱਚੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਦੋਖ ਗਏ ਸਭ ਨੀਕਰਿ ਜਿਉ ਪਾਨੀ ਮੈਲੁ ਹਰੇ ॥੧॥
kilbikh dokh ga-ay sabh neekar ji-o paanee mail haray. ||1||
Just as water drives out the dirt from clothes, likewise those who meditate on God’s Name, all their sins and sufferings are eradicated. ||1||
(ਜਿਹੜਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਸਾਰੇ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਾਪ (ਇਉਂ) ਨਿਕਲ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਪਾਣੀ (ਕੱਪੜਿਆਂ ਦੀ) ਮੈਲ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਖਿਨੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਨਰੁ ਨਾਰਾਇਨੁ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਬੋਲਹਿ ਨਰ ਨਰਹਰੇ ॥
khin khin nar naaraa-in gaavahi mukh boleh nar narharay.
Those who always sing God’s Praise and recite His Name with their tongue,
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! (ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਹਰ ਖਿਨ (ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਮੂੰਹੋਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਚਾਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਪੰਚ ਦੋਖ ਅਸਾਧ ਨਗਰ ਮਹਿ ਇਕੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਪਲੁ ਦੂਰਿ ਕਰੇ ॥੨॥
panch dokh asaaDh nagar meh ik khin pal door karay. ||2||
In an instant, God’s Name knocks out the five incurable afflictions (vices) from their body. ||2||
(ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ) ਪੰਜ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਜੋ ਕਾਬੂ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆ ਸਕਦੇ ਤੇ ਜੋ (ਆਮ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ) ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ (ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ), (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਇਕ ਖਿਨ-ਪਲ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਭਗਤ ਹਰੇ ॥
vadbhaagee har naam Dhi-aavahi har kay bhagat haray.
O’ mind, fortunate are the devotees who constantly meditate on God’s Name.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ) ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਦੇਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜਾਚਉ ਮੈ ਮੂੜ ਮੁਗਧ ਨਿਸਤਰੇ ॥੩॥
tin kee sangat deh parabh jaacha-o mai moorh mugaDh nistaray. ||3||
O’ God, bless me with the company of such devotees, so that even a spiritually ignorant person like me may also be liberated from the vices. ||3||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼! ਮੇਰੇ ਵਰਗੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਮੂਰਖ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੩॥
ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ਜਗਜੀਵਨ ਰਖਿ ਲੇਵਹੁ ਸਰਨਿ ਪਰੇ ॥
kirpaa kirpaa Dhaar jagjeevan rakh layvhu saran paray.
O’ God, the life of the universe, I have sought your refuge; bestow mercy and save me from the vices.
ਹੇ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ, ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਪੰਜਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚਾ ਲੈ।
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਜਨੁ ਤੁਮਰੀ ਸਰਨਾਈ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਲਾਜ ਹਰੇ ॥੪॥੧॥
naanak jan tumree sarnaa-ee har raakho laaj haray. ||4||1||
O’ God, devotee Nanak has come to Your refuge;preserve my dignity. ||4||1||
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਤੇਰਾ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ (ਨਾਨਕ ਦੀ) ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਰੱਖ ਲੈ ॥੪॥੧॥

Raag Nat, Fourth Guru:
ਰਾਮ ਜਪਿ ਜਨ ਰਾਮੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਲੇ ॥
raam jap jan raamai naam ralay.
Meditating on God’s Name, the devotees remain immersed in His Name.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿਓ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਹਰਿ ਧਾਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਲੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
raam naam japi-o gur bachnee har Dhaaree har kiraplay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Those who have been especially blessed by God, meditate on God’s Name by following the Guru’s teachings. ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਬਚਨਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ) ਜਪਿਆ ਹੈ (ਜਿਸ ਉਤੇ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਮਿਹਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਜਨ ਜਪਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਲਲ ਸਲਲੇ ॥
har har agam agochar su-aamee jan jap mil salal sallay.
God is inaccessible and unfathomable, meditating on Him, His humble devotee merges into Him, just like water inseparably mixes with water.
ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਅਪਹੁੰਚ ਹੈ, ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਸ ਤਕ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ। ਉਸ ਦੇ ਭਗਤ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਕੇ (ਇਉਂ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਵੇਂ) ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਣੀ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ (ਇੱਕ-ਰੂਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ)।
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਸੰਤ ਮਿਲਿ ਰਾਮ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਮ ਜਨ ਕੈ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਲੇ ॥੧॥
har kay sant mil raam ras paa-i-aa ham jan kai bal ballay. ||1||
I am totally dedicated to those saints, who have relished the sublime essence of God’s Name. ||1||
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਨੇ (ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ ਚੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ, ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਹਾਂ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਹਾਂ ॥੧॥
ਪੁਰਖੋਤਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਨਿ ਗਾਇਓ ਸਭਿ ਦਾਲਦ ਦੁਖ ਦਲਲੇ ॥
purkhotam har naam jan gaa-i-o sabh daalad dukh dallay.
The supreme God eradicated all the sufferings of the devotee who lovingly meditated on His Name.
ਜਿਸ ਸੇਵਕ ਨੇ ਉੱਤਮ ਪੁਰਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਦਰਿੱਦਰ ਨਾਸ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੇ।
ਵਿਚਿ ਦੇਹੀ ਦੋਖ ਅਸਾਧ ਪੰਚ ਧਾਤੂ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਏ ਖਿਨ ਪਰਲੇ ॥੨॥
vich dayhee dokh asaaDh panch Dhaatoo har kee-ay khin parlay. ||2||
Within the human body, dwell the five incurable afflictions (lust, greed, anger, attachment and ego); God knocks them all out in an instant. ||2||
ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ ਪੰਜ ਬਲੀ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਵੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਇਹ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਇਕ ਖਿਨ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਸ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਸੰਤ ਮਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਗਾਈ ਜਿਉ ਦੇਖੈ ਸਸਿ ਕਮਲੇ ॥
har kay sant man pareet lagaa-ee ji-o daykhai sas kamlay.
The saints of God are so imbued with His love, just as a lotus blooms on seeing the moon,
ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਇਉਂ ਲਾਈ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਚੰਦਰਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਕੰਵਲ ਫੁੱਲ ਖਿੜ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਉਨਵੈ ਘਨੁ ਘਨ ਘਨਿਹਰੁ ਗਰਜੈ ਮਨਿ ਬਿਗਸੈ ਮੋਰ ਮੁਰਲੇ ॥੩॥
unvai ghan ghan ghanihar garjai man bigsai mor murlay. ||3||
and a peacock starts dancing in joy on listening to the thunder of the low clouds. ||3||
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਪੈਲ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਮੋਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਤਦੋਂ) ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜਦੋਂ) ਬੱਦਲ ਝੁਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਗੱਜਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਹਮਰੈ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਲੋਚ ਹਮ ਲਾਈ ਹਮ ਜੀਵਹ ਦੇਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਮਿਲੇ ॥
hamrai su-aamee loch ham laa-ee ham jeeveh daykh har milay.
My Master-God has infused in me an intense yearning for Him and I spiritually survive only by meditating on His Name.
ਮੇਰੇ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ) ਲਗਨ ਲਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ, ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਅਮਲ ਹਰਿ ਲਾਏ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲਹੁ ਅਨਦ ਭਲੇ ॥੪॥੨॥
jan naanak har amal har laa-ay har maylhu anad bhalay. ||4||2||
O’Nanak, say, O’ God, it is You, who has imbued me with Your love, keep me united with You, and that is the most enjoyable bliss for me. ||4||2||
ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਨਸ਼ਾ ਲਾਇਆ ਹੈ, ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖ, ਇਸੇ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੨॥

Raag Nat, Fourth Guru:
ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਜਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਖੇ ॥
mayray man jap har har naam sakhay.
O’ my mind, meditate on God’s name; He alone is the true friend.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆ ਕਰ। (ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮਿ ਹੀ ਅਸਲ) ਮਿੱਤਰ ਹੈ।
