Raag Maajh, by the Fourth Guru:
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਪੜੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗੁਣੀਐ ॥
har gun parhee-ai har gun gunee-ai.
O’ my saintly friends, come let us join together and read and reflect on the God’s virtues.
(ਹੇ ਸਤਸੰਗੀ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ! ਆਉ ਰਲ ਕੇ ਅਸੀ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਪੜ੍ਹੀਏ ਤੇ ਵਿਚਾਰੀਏ,
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਕਥਾ ਨਿਤ ਸੁਣੀਐ ॥
har har naam kathaa nit sunee-ai.
Let’s listen continually to the Sermon of Naam.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਕਥਾ ਹੀ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਣਾ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਰਹੀਏ।
ਮਿਲਿ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਏ ਜਗੁ ਭਉਜਲੁ ਦੁਤਰੁ ਤਰੀਐ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥
mil satsangat har gun gaa-ay jag bha-ojal dutar taree-ai jee-o. ||1||
By singing His praises in the congregation of saintly persons, we can swim across the dreadful world-ocean of Maya.
ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ (ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ) ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਜਗਤ ਤੋਂ ਇਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਈਦਾ ਹੈ (ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਜਿਸ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਣਾ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਔਖਾ ਹੈl
ਆਉ ਸਖੀ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲੁ ਕਰੇਹਾ ॥
aa-o sakhee har mayl karayhaa.
Come, O’ my (saintly) friends, let us create a congregation of Saints to realize union with God.
ਹੇ ਸਤਸੰਗੀ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ! ਆਉ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ) ਵਾਲਾ ਸਤਸੰਗ ਬਣਾਈਏ।
ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਕਾ ਮੈ ਦੇਇ ਸਨੇਹਾ॥
mayray pareetam kaa mai day-ay sanayhaa.
Bring me a message from my Beloved.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸੁਨੇਹਾ ਦੇਵੇ,
ਮੇਰਾ ਮਿਤ੍ਰੁ ਸਖਾ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਭਾਈ ਮੈ ਦਸੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਰਹਰੀਐ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥
mayraa mitar sakhaa so pareetam bhaa-ee mai dasay har narharee-ai jee-o. ||2||
Any person, who gives me the message of my beloved (God) and tells me His whereabouts is my dear friend, and brother.
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਦਾ ਥਹੁ-ਪਤਾ) ਦੱਸੇ ਉਹੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਾਥੀ ਹੈ, ਮੇਰਾ ਸੱਜਣ ਹੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਭਰਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਮੇਰੀ ਬੇਦਨ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
mayree baydan har gur pooraa jaanai.
The Guru only knows the agony of separation in my heart.
(ਹੇ ਸਤਸੰਗੀ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ!) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਦਾ ਰੂਪ) ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ (ਹੀ) ਮੇਰੀ ਪੀੜਾ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ
ਹਉ ਰਹਿ ਨ ਸਕਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਮ ਵਖਾਣੇ ॥
ha-o reh na sakaa bin naam vakhaanay.
I cannot continue living without reciting the Naam.
ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੈਨੂ ਧੀਰਜ ਨਹੀਂ ਆ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਮੈ ਅਉਖਧੁ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਉਧਰੀਐ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥
mai a-ukhaDh mantar deejai gur pooray mai har har naam uDhree-ai jee-o. ||3||
O’ my Guru give me the medicine of Naam to cure my agony of separation and ferry me across the world-ocean of vices.
(ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਅੱਗੇ ਹੀ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਤੇ ਆਖਦਾ ਹਾਂ-) ਹੇ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ! ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣਾ) ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੇਹ (ਇਹੀ) ਦਵਾਈ (ਹੈ ਜੋ ਮੇਰੀ ਬੇਦਨ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ)। ਹੇ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ (ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ॥੩॥
ਹਮ ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕ ਦੀਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥
ham chaatrik deen satgur sarnaa-ee.
Like a humble Song-Bird, I have come to the refuge of the Guru.
ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ-) ਅਸੀਂ ਨਿਮਾਣੇ ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕ ਹਾਂ ਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਏ ਹਾਂ।
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਬੂੰਦ ਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
har har naam boond mukh paa-ee.
Like Songbird Lounging for rain-water, Guru has placed a Drop of Naam in my mouth.
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਅਸਾਂ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਇਆ ਹੈ (ਜਿਵੇਂ ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕ ਸ੍ਵਾਂਤੀ) ਬੂੰਦ (ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ)।
ਹਰਿ ਜਲਨਿਧਿ ਹਮ ਜਲ ਕੇ ਮੀਨੇ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਲ ਬਿਨੁ ਮਰੀਐ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥੩॥
har jalniDh ham jal kay meenay jan naanak jal bin maree-ai jee-o. ||4||3||
The God is the ocean of Naam; I am just a fish in that water. Without Naam devotee Nanak would die.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਹੈ, ਅਸੀਂ ਉਸ ਪਾਣੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਮੱਛੀਆਂ ਹਾਂ, ਉਸ ਨਾਮ-ਜਲ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਆ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਜਿਵੇਂ ਮੱਛੀ ਪਾਣੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ)

Raag Maajh, by the Fourth Guru:
ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਸੰਤ ਮਿਲਹੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥
har jan sant milhu mayray bhaa-ee.
Come, meet me, O’ my saintly friends,
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ ਜਨੋ! ਹੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ! ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਰਾਵੋ! (ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਮਿਲੋ,
ਮੇਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਦਸਹੁ ਮੈ ਭੁਖ ਲਗਾਈ ॥
mayraa har parabh dashu mai bhukh lagaa-ee.
Show me the way to my God, I am hungry and lounging to to meet Him!
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮੇਰੇ ਹਰੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਦੱਸ ਪਾਵੋ, ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਦੀ) ਭੁੱਖ ਲੱਗੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।
ਮੇਰੀ ਸਰਧਾ ਪੂਰਿ ਜਗਜੀਵਨ ਦਾਤੇ ਮਿਲਿ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਸਨਿ ਮਨੁ ਭੀਜੈ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥
mayree sarDhaa poor jagjeevan daatay mil har darsan man bheejai jee-o. ||1||
O’ my benefactor, the life of the world, fulfill this longing of mine: that I may be blessed to realize you, and my mind may be spiritually satiated.
ਹੇ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਹੇ ਦਾਤਾਰ! ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਮੇਰੀ ਇਹ ਸਰਧਾ ਪੂਰੀ ਕਰ ਕਿ ਤੇਰੇ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ (ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਲ) ਤਰੋ-ਤਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ ॥੧॥
ਮਿਲਿ ਸਤਸੰਗਿ ਬੋਲੀ ਹਰਿ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
mil satsang bolee har banee.
Joining the congregation of saintly persons, remember and focus on God’s word.
(ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਲੋਚਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਉਚਾਰਾਂ।
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਥਾ ਮੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਣੀ ॥
har har kathaa mayrai man bhaanee.
The Sermon of praises of God ,is pleasing and spiritually satisfying to my mind.
ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰੀਆਂ ਲੱਗ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਜੈ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥
har har amrit har man bhaavai mil satgur amrit peejai jee-o. ||2||
The nectar of God’s Naam is sweet to my mind. Meeting the Guru (in the congregation of saints), I enjoy this nectar and divine bliss.
ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਜਲ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਚੰਗਾ ਲਗ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਨਾਮ-ਜਲ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਪੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥
vadbhaagee har sangat paavahi.
Only by great good fortune one obtains the company of the saintly persons.
ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਕਰਾਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਭਾਗਹੀਨ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਚੋਟਾ ਖਾਵਹਿ ॥
bhaagheen bharam chotaa khaaveh.
Without this association, the unfortunate ones wander about in delusion, and suffer.
ਪਰ ਨਿਭਾਗੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਚੋਟਾਂ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਸੱਟਾਂ ਸਹਾਰਦੇ ਹਨ)।
ਬਿਨੁ ਭਾਗਾ ਸਤਸੰਗੁ ਨ ਲਭੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਭਰੀਜੈ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥
bin bhaagaa satsang na labhai bin sangat mail bhareejai jee-o. ||3||
Without the good fortune, we can not find the company of saintly people, without such association, our mind is filled with worldly evils.
ਚੰਗੀ ਕਿਸਮਤ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦੀ। ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਮੈਲ ਨਾਲ ਲਿਬੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ
ਮੈ ਆਇ ਮਿਲਹੁ ਜਗਜੀਵਨ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥
mai aa-ay milhu jagjeevan pi-aaray.
Come and meet me, O’, Life of the World, my Beloved.
ਹੇ ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਆ ਕੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ।
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦਇਆ ਮਨਿ ਧਾਰੇ ॥
har har naam da-i-aa man Dhaaray.
Please bless me with Your Mercy, and enshrine Naam, within my mind.
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਦਇਆ ਧਾਰ ਕੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ ਦੇਹ।
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਆ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਮਨੁ ਭੀਜੈ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥੪॥
gurmat naam meethaa man bhaa-i-aa jan naanak naam man bheejai jee-o. ||4||4||
God’s Naam has become pleasing to my mind. Yes, devotee Nanak’s mind is satiated with (the joy of God’s) Naam.
ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ-) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ (ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਮਿੱਠਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ (ਸਦਾ) ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਭਿੱਜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ l

Raag Maajh, by the Fourth Guru:
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
har gur gi-aan har ras har paa-i-aa.
Through the Guru and joining the company of saintly persons , I have realized the spiritual wisdom and have obtained the Sublime Essence of his message.
ਮੈਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲਈ ਹੈ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਮਿਲ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਮਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਆਇਆ ॥
man har rang raataa har ras pee-aa-i-aa.
I have been bestowed with God’s Naam and my mind is imbued with His love.
ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ, ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਪਿਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਬੋਲੀ ਮਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਟੁਲਿ ਟੁਲਿ ਪਉਦਾ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥
har har naam mukh har har bolee man har ras tul tul pa-udaa jee-o. ||1||
Remembering the Name of the God, my mind is overflowing with the Sublime Essence of the His Love.
(ਹੁਣ) ਮੈਂ ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਮੂੰਹ ਨਾਲ ਉਚਾਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਵਿਚ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਉਛਲ ਉਛਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਆਵਹੁ ਸੰਤ ਮੈ ਗਲਿ ਮੇਲਾਈਐ ॥
aavhu sant mai gal maylaa-ee-ai.
Come, O Saints, and lead me to my God’s Embrace.
ਹੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ! ਆਵੋ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਗਲ ਨਾਲ ਲਾ ਲਵੋ,
ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਕੀ ਮੈ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਣਾਈਐ ॥
mayray pareetam kee mai kathaa sunaa-ee-ai.
Recite to me the Sermon of my Beloved.
ਤੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਸੁਣਾਵੋ।
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਸੰਤ ਮਿਲਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਦੇਵਾ ਜੋ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਮੁਖਿ ਚਉਦਾ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥
har kay sant milhu man dayvaa jo gurbaanee mukh cha-udaa jee-o. ||2||
O’ saints of God let’s meet, I can dedicate my mind to those Saints , who recite Guru’s Bani.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮਿਲੋ। ਜੇਹੜਾ ਕੋਈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਮੂੰਹ ਨਾਲ ਉਚਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸੁਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ) ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਵਾਲੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ l
ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਹਰਿ ਸੰਤੁ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥
vadbhaagee har sant milaa-i-aa.
By great good fortune, God has led me to meet the Guru.
ਮੇਰੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ,
ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
gur poorai har ras mukh paa-i-aa.
and the Guru has placed the Sublime Essence of Naam in me.
ਤੇ (ਉਸ) ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਮੇਰੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿਚ ਪਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।
ਭਾਗਹੀਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਇਆ ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਗਰਭ ਜੂਨੀ ਨਿਤਿ ਪਉਦਾ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥
bhaagheen satgur nahee paa-i-aa manmukh garabh joonee nit pa-udaa jee-o. ||3||
The unfortunate ones are not blessed to meet the Guru, and the persons oblivious to the Guru’s teachings keep falling into cycles of birth and rebirth.
ਨਿਭਾਗੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ। ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਆਪਿ ਦਇਆਲਿ ਦਇਆ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਧਾਰੀ ॥
aap da-i-aal da-i-aa parabh Dhaaree.
God, the Merciful, has Himself bestowed His Mercy.
ਦਇਆ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉੱਤੇ ਮਿਹਰ ਕੀਤੀ,
ਮਲੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਸਭ ਨਿਵਾਰੀ ॥
mal ha-umai bikhi-aa sabh nivaaree.
With His mercy, he has completely washed off the dirt of ego and the poison of Maya from the mind.
ਉਸ ਨੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਹਉਮੈ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਸਾਰੀ ਹੀ ਦੂਰੀ ਕਰ ਲਈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਟ ਪਟਣ ਵਿਚਿ ਕਾਂਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਉਦਾ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥੫॥
naanak hat patan vich kaaN-i-aa har laiNday gurmukh sa-udaa jee-o. ||4||5||
O’ Nanak, by molding one’s mind according to the Guru’s instructions, one experiences the divine bliss.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਸਰੀਰ-ਹੱਟ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਸਰੀਰ-ਸ਼ਹਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ (ਟਿਕ ਕੇ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸੌਦਾ ਖ਼ਰੀਦਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੪॥੫॥

Raag Maajh, by the Fourth Guru:
ਹਉ ਗੁਣ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈ ॥
ha-o gun govind har naam Dhi-aa-ee.
My mind longs to sing praises of God, and meditate on His Name.
(ਮੇਰੀ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਮੈਂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਾਂ,
ਮਿਲਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਈ ॥
mil sangat man naam vasaa-ee.
By joining the congregation of saintly persons, I may enshrine Naam in my heart.
ਤੇ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਵਾਂ।
ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਕੀਚੈ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥
har parabh agam agochar su-aamee mil satgur har ras keechai jee-o. ||1||
O’ God, the Master, inaccessible and unfathomable, with your blessings i can meet the Guru and enjoy the Sublime Essence of Naam.
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਹੇ ਅਪਹੁੰਚ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ)! ਹੇ ਅਗੋਚਰ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ)! ਹੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ! (ਜੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਹੋਵੇ ਤਾਂ) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ l
