mehlaa 3.
By the Third Guru:
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਣਤਾਸੁ ॥
satgur sayv sukh paa-i-aa sach naam guntaas.
One who has followed the teachings of the true Guru, has obtained peace and realized God, the Treasure of virtues.
(ਜਿਸ ਨੇ) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਸੱਚਾ ਨਾਮ (ਰੂਪੀ) ਸੁਖ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ॥
gurmatee aap pachhaani-aa raam naam pargaas.
Through the Guru’s teachings, he recognizes his own self, and within him shines the divine light of God’s Name.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਲੈ ਕੇ (ਉਹ) ਆਪੇ ਦੀ ਪਛਾਣ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਚਾਨਣ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਵਣਾ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਵਡੇ ਪਾਸਿ ॥
sacho sach kamaavanaa vadi-aa-ee vaday paas.
He meditates on the eternal Naam and is honored in God’s court.
ਉਹ ਨਿਰੋਲ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਇਸ ਕਰਕੇ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਆਦਰ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭੁ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥
jee-o pind sabh tis kaa sifat karay ardaas.
He believes that body and soul are gifts of God, therefore he always praises Him and prays for His Grace.
ਜਿੰਦ ਤੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ (ਜਾਣ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਅੱਗੇ) ਬੇਨਤੀ ਤੇ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਸੁਖੇ ਸੁਖਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥
sachai sabad salaahnaa sukhay sukh nivaas.
By prasing the eternal God through the Guru’s word and lives in perfect bliss.
ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਮਨੈ ਮਾਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਜੀਵਾਸੁ ॥
jap tap sanjam manai maahi bin naavai Dharig jeevaas.
Enshrining God’s praises in the mind is the real worship, penance, and self-restraint, and accursed is the life without contemplation of (God’s) Name.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਣੀ-ਇਹੀ ਉਸ ਲਈ ਜਪ ਤਪ ਤੇ ਸੰਜਮ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਫਿਟਕਾਰ-ਜੋਗ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਨਾਉ ਪਾਈਐ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੋਹਿ ਵਿਣਾਸੁ ॥
gurmatee naa-o paa-ee-ai manmukh mohi vinaas.
Naam is obtained by following Guru’s teachings. The self-willed person wastes away his human life in emotional attachments.
ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਆਪ-ਹੁੰਦਰੇ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਮਮਤਾ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਉ ਰਾਖੁ ਤੂੰ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਦਾਸੁ ॥੨॥
ji-o bhaavai ti-o raakh tooN naanak tayraa daas. ||2||
O’ God, save me as it pleases You, Nanak is Your servant.
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਜਿਵੇਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗੇ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਸਹੈਤਾ ਕਰ (ਤੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਦੇਹ) ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇਰਾ ਸੇਵਕ ਹੈ l

ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਤੇਰਾ ਤੂੰ ਸਭਸੁ ਦਾ ਤੂੰ ਸਭਨਾ ਰਾਸਿ ॥
sabh ko tayraa tooN sabhas daa tooN sabhnaa raas.
O’ God, all beings are Your creation, You are the Master of all. You are the sustainer of all.
(ਹੇ ਹਰੀ!) ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਤੇਰਾ (ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ) ਤੂੰ ਸਭ ਦਾ (ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈਂ ਅਤੇ) ਸਭਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਹੈਂ (ਭਾਵ, ਰਾਜ਼ਕ ਹੈਂ।)
ਸਭਿ ਤੁਧੈ ਪਾਸਹੁ ਮੰਗਦੇ ਨਿਤ ਕਰਿ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥
sabh tuDhai paashu mangday nit kar ardaas.
Everyone begs from You, by praying to You day after day.
ਇਸੇ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸਦਾ ਜੋਦੜੀਆਂ ਕਰਕੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ ਤੇਰੇ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਹੀ ਦਾਨ ਮੰਗਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂੰ ਦੇਹਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਇਕਨਾ ਦੂਰਿ ਹੈ ਪਾਸਿ ॥
jis tooN deh tis sabh kichh milai iknaa door hai paas.
The one, whom You give, obtains everything. For some You seem far, but for some You are always with them.
ਜਿਸ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਕੁਝ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ। ਕਈਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਦੁਰੇਡੇ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਕਈਆਂ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ।
ਤੁਧੁ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਥਾਉ ਕੋ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਿਸੁ ਪਾਸਹੁ ਮੰਗੀਐ ਮਨਿ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਕੋ ਨਿਰਜਾਸਿ ॥
tuDh baajhahu thaa-o ko naahee jis paashu mangee-ai man vaykhhu ko nirjaas.
Let anyone verify in the mind, he would conclude that)except You, there is none other from whom we can beg.
ਕੋਈ ਧਿਰ ਭੀ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਨਿਰਨਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਵੇਖ ਲਏ (ਹੇ ਹਰੀ!) ਤੇਥੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਜਿਥੋਂ ਕੁਝ ਮੰਗ ਸਕੀਏ।
ਸਭਿ ਤੁਧੈ ਨੋ ਸਾਲਾਹਦੇ ਦਰਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾ ਨੋ ਪਰਗਾਸਿ ॥੯॥
sabh tuDhai no salaahday dar gurmukhaa no pargaas. ||9||
O’ God, although all praise You, but it is only the Guru’s followers, who are truly recognized and honored at Your court.
ਹੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਉਂਞ ਤਾਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਉਸਤਤੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਜੋ ਜੀਵ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਗਟ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਤੇ ਆਦਰ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈਂl

Shalok, br the Third Guru:
ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਉਚਾ ਕੂਕਦਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
pandit parh parh uchaa kookdaa maa-i-aa mohi pi-aar.
After reading again and again, the Pandit loudly recite scriptures for the love of Maya, (rather than for the love of God or spiritual uplift of the listeners).
ਪੜ੍ਹ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ ( ਵੇਦ ਆਦਿਕ ਦਾ) ਉੱਚੀ ਸੁਰ ਨਾਲ ਉਚਾਰਣ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਪਿਆਰ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਆਪ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਨ ਚੀਨਈ ਮਨਿ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਗਾਵਾਰੁ ॥
antar barahm na cheen-ee man moorakh gaavaar.
He does not recognize God within, he is so foolish and ignorant.
ਉਹ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਬ ਦੀ ਭਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ, ਇਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਮਨੋਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਤੇ ਅਨਪੜ੍ਹ ਹੀ ਹੈ।
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਜਗਤੁ ਪਰਬੋਧਦਾ ਨਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
doojai bhaa-ay jagat parboDhadaa naa boojhai beechaar.
He preaches to the world, in the love of duality, but he himself does not understand divine knowledge.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਤਾਂ) ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੀ, (ਤੇ) ਸੰਸਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਮੱਤਾਂ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮੈ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰ ॥੧॥
birthaa janam gavaa-i-aa mar jammai vaaro vaar. ||1||
He wastes away his life uselessly and go through the cycles of birth and death.
ਉਹ ਆਪਣਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਬੇਅਰਥ ਗੁਆ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਕੇ ਮਰਦਾ ਤੇ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ।

Salok, by the Third Guru:
ਜਿਨੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਤਿਨੀ ਨਾਉ ਪਾਇਆ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਕਰਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
jinee satgur sayvi-aa tinee naa-o paa-i-aa boojhhu kar beechaar.
Reflect on this and understand, only they who have served the True Guru by following His teachings have realized God.
ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸਮਝ ਲਵੋ (ਭਾਵ, ਵੇਖ ਲਵੋ), ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਹੋਈ ਕਾਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।
ਸਦਾ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਚੂਕੈ ਕੂਕ ਪੁਕਾਰ ॥
sadaa saaNt sukh man vasai chookai kook pukaar.
Peace and contentment always abide in their mind, and all their wailing and crying comes to an end.
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਹੀ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਤੇ ਸੁਖ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਕਲਪਣਾ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੈ ਨੋ ਆਪੁ ਖਾਇ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
aapai no aap khaa-ay man nirmal hovai gur sabdee veechaar.
By shedding ego, their mind becomes immaculate. This understanding is obtained by reflecting on the Guru’s word.
ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ਤਾਂ ਮਨ ਸਾਫ਼ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ’l ਇਹ ਵਿਚਾਰ (ਭੀ) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ (ਉਪਜਦੀ ਹੈ)।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੇ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਹੇਤਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥੨॥
naanak sabad ratay say mukat hai har jee-o hayt pi-aar. ||2||
O’ Nanak, those who are imbued with the Guru’s word are liberated from the vices, (because) they are attuned to the love of God.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਮੁਕਤ ਹਨ, (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਿਰਤੀ ਜੁੜੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ

Pauree:
ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਸਫਲ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਥਾਇ ॥
har kee sayvaa safal hai gurmukh paavai thaa-ay.
Meditation on God’s Name is Fruitful for all, but it meets God’s approval only when performed following Guru’s guidance.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਬੰਦਗੀ (ਉਂਞ ਤਾਂ ਹਰ ਇਕ ਲਈ ਹੀ) ਸਫਲ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਕਬੂਲ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇ ॥
jis har bhaavai tis gur milai so har naam Dhi-aa-ay.
That person, with whom God is pleased, meets with the Guru, and only that person meditates on God’s Name.
ਉਸੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ (ਹੀ) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਉਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤਰੁੱਠਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਹੋ ਹੀ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਲਘਾਇ ॥
gur sabdee har paa-ee-ai har paar laghaa-ay.
Through the word of the Guru, we realize God. And God helps us swim across the worldly ocean of vices.
ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਾਗਰ ਤੋਂ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਹੈ।
ਮਨਹਠਿ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਪੁਛਹੁ ਵੇਦਾ ਜਾਇ ॥
manhath kinai na paa-i-o puchhahu vaydaa jaa-ay.
Through stubborn-mindedness, none have realized God; go and consult the Vedas on this.
ਚਿੱਤ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੱਦ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਇਆ। ਜਾ ਕੇ ਵੇਦਾਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਪਾਤ ਕਰ ਲਓ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਸੋ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਲਏ ਹਰਿ ਲਾਇ ॥੧੦॥
naanak har kee sayvaa so karay jis la-ay har laa-ay. ||10||
O’ Nanak, he alone meditates on God’s Name, whom He Himself blesses with His meditation.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਹਰੀ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਉਹੀ ਜੀਵ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ (ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾ ਕੇ) ਹਰੀ ਆਪਿ ਸੇਵਾ ਵਿਚ ਲਾਏ l

Shalok, by the Third Guru:
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋ ਸੂਰਾ ਵਰੀਆਮੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਦੁਸਟੁ ਅਹੰਕਰਣੁ ਮਾਰਿਆ ॥
naanak so sooraa varee-aam jin vichahu dusat ahankaran maari-aa.
O’ Nanak, he is a brave warrior, who conquers his vicious inner ego.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਬਹਾਦੁਰ ਸੂਰਮਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ (ਮਨ) ਵਿਚੋਂ ਦੁਸ਼ਟ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਦੂਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ l
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਾਲਾਹਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ ॥
gurmukh naam saalaahi janam savaari-aa.
The Guru’s follower has redeemed his life by Praising God’s Name.
ਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ) ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਜਨਮ ਸਫਲਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪਿ ਹੋਆ ਸਦਾ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਸਭੁ ਕੁਲੁ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਿਆ ॥
aap ho-aa sadaa mukat sabh kul nistaari-aa.
Forever he is liberated from the vices and also liberates his entire Family.
ਉਹ ਆਪ ਸਦਾ ਲਈ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਛੁੱਟ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ (ਨਾਲ) ਸਾਰੀ ਕੁਲ ਨੂੰ ਤਾਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸੋਹਨਿ ਸਚਿ ਦੁਆਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਿਆਰਿਆ ॥
sohan sach du-aar naam pi-aari-aa.
Such lovers of Naam look beauteous and honorable in the God’s court.
ਨਾਮ’ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮਰਹਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ ਮਰਣੁ ਵਿਗਾੜਿਆ ॥
manmukh mareh ahaNkaar maran vigaarhi-aa.
The self-willed persons die of their ego, and die so painfully that they even degrade dying.
ਪਰ, ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਸੜਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਸਭੋ ਵਰਤੈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਹਿ ਵਿਚਾਰਿਆ ॥
sabho vartai hukam ki-aa karahi vichaari-aa.
Everything happens according to the God’s Will; what can the poor people do?
ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚਾਰਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਵੱਸ ਭੀ ਕੀਹ ਹੈ? ਸਭ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ) ਭਾਣਾ ਵਰਤ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪਹੁ ਦੂਜੈ ਲਗਿ ਖਸਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ॥
aaphu doojai lag khasam visaari-aa.
These self-willed people instead of reflecting on themselves, become attached to the worldly riches and forsake the Master.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਦੀ ਖੋਜ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਚਿੱਤ ਜੋੜਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਸਾਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸਭੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ॥੧॥
naanak bin naavai sabh dukh sukh visaari-aa. ||1||
O’ Nanak, without the Naam, everything is painful, and happiness is forgotten.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਹੀਣ ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸੁਖ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਸਰ ਹੀ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ

By the Third Guru:
ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦਿੜਾਇਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥
gur poorai har naam dirhaa-i-aa tin vichahu bharam chukaa-i-aa.
They, in whom the perfect Guru has firmly implanted Naam, have dispelled any doubts from within.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦ੍ਰਿੜ੍ਹ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲਈ ਹੈ।
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਗਾਈ ਕਰਿ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਮਗੁ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥
raam naam har keerat gaa-ee kar chaanan mag dikhaa-i-aa.
They sing the praises of God which illuminates their mind and they see the right way of life.
ਉਹ ਹਰੀ-ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਉਪਮਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ (ਇਸ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਨੂੰ) ਚਾਨਣ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ (ਸਿੱਧਾ) ਰਸਤਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦਿੱਸ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਇਆ ॥
ha-umai maar ayk liv laagee antar naam vasaa-i-aa.
Destroying ego, they are attuned to God and enshrine Him in their heart.
ਉਹ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਇੱਕ ਨਾਲ ਨਿਹੁੰ ਲਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਅਤੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਮ ਵਸਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
