ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੈ ਵਲਿ ਹੋਆ ਮੇਰਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਹਰਿ ਸਜਣ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਸੁਜਾਨੁ ॥
jan naanak kai val ho-aa mayraa su-aamee har sajan purakh sujaan.
O’ Nanak, my Master-God, who is wise, all pervading and friend of all, is on the side of His devotees.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ-) ਸਭ ਦੇ ਦਿਲ ਦੀ ਜਾਣਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਸਭ ਦਾ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਸਭ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਦੇ ਪੱਖ ਤੇ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪਉਦੀ ਭਿਤਿ ਦੇਖਿ ਕੈ ਸਭਿ ਆਇ ਪਏ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਪੈਰੀ ਲਾਹਿਓਨੁ ਸਭਨਾ ਕਿਅਹੁ ਮਨਹੁ ਗੁਮਾਨੁ ॥੧੦॥
pa-udee bhit daykh kai sabh aa-ay pa-ay satgur kee pairee laahi-on sabhnaa ki-ahu manhu gumaan. ||10||
Seeing the spiritual sustenance being available from the true Guru, everyone came to his refuge; the true Guru eradicated false pride from their mind. ||10||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਖ਼ੁਰਾਕ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਲੋਕ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਚਰਨੀਂ ਆ ਲੱਗੇ। ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਤੋਂ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ॥੧੦॥

Shalok, First Guru:
ਕੋਈ ਵਾਹੇ ਕੋ ਲੁਣੈ ਕੋ ਪਾਏ ਖਲਿਹਾਨਿ ॥
ko-ee vaahay ko lunai ko paa-ay khalihaan.
A farmer tills the land and sows the seed, someone else harvests it and yet another person separates the grain from the husk.
ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਲ ਵਾਂਹਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਪੱਕਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਫ਼ਸਲ ਵੱਢਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਸ ਵੱਢੇ ਹੋਏ ਫ਼ਸਲ ਨੂੰ ਖਲਵਾੜੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ;
ਨਾਨਕ ਏਵ ਨ ਜਾਪਈ ਕੋਈ ਖਾਇ ਨਿਦਾਨਿ ॥੧॥
naanak ayv na jaap-ee ko-ee khaa-ay nidaan. ||1||
O Nanak, it is not known who will ultimately eat the grain; (similarly, it is not known when what will happen. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਇਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਿਹ ਸਕੀਦਾ ਕਿ ਅੰਤ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਸ ਨੇ ਖਾਣਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਕਿ ਕਦੋਂ ਕੀਹ ਕੁਝ ਵਾਪਰੇਗਾ ॥੧॥

First Guru:
ਜਿਸੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਤਰਿਆ ਸੋਇ ॥
jis man vasi-aa tari-aa so-ay.
That person alone swims across the worldly ocean of vices, in whose mind is enshrined God.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥
naanak jo bhaavai so ho-ay. ||2||
O’ Nanak, that alone happens which is pleasing to God. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਆ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਉਹੀ ਕੁਝ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ) ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥

ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮਿ ਦਇਆਲਿ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਤਾਰਿਆ ॥
paarbarahm da-i-aal saagar taari-aa.
The merciful supreme God has ferried that person across the world-ocean of vices,
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਦਿਆਲ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਲਿਆ,
ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਮਿਹਰਵਾਨਿ ਭਰਮੁ ਭਉ ਮਾਰਿਆ ॥
gur poorai miharvaan bharam bha-o maari-aa.
whose doubts and fears have been destroyed by the merciful perfect Guru.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਤੇ ਸਹਿਮ ਪੂਰੇ ਮਿਹਰਵਾਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਮੁਕਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਬਿਕਰਾਲੁ ਦੂਤ ਸਭਿ ਹਾਰਿਆ ॥
kaam kroDh bikraal doot sabh haari-aa.
Then all such dreadful demons as lust and anger have given up torturing him,
ਭਿਆਨਕ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਅਤੇ ਕਾਮ (ਆਦਿਕ) ਸਾਰੇ (ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਵੈਰੀ (ਉਸ ਉਤੇ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਪਾਣੋਂ) ਹਾਰ ਗਏ ,
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਕੰਠਿ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਿਆ ॥
amrit naam niDhaan kanth ur Dhaari-aa.
because he has enshrined the treasure of the ambrosial nectar of Naam in his heart.
(ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਗਲੇ ਵਿਚ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ (ਸਦਾ ਲਈ) ਟਿਕਾ ਲਿਆ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਮਰਣੁ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ ॥੧੧॥
naanak saaDhoo sang janam maran savaari-aa. ||11||
O’ Nanak, such a person has embellished his entire life by staying in the company of the true Guru. ||11||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ (ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ) ਸਾਰਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਸੰਵਾਰ ਲਿਆ ॥੧੧॥

Shalok, Third Guru:
ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਕੂੜੇ ਕਹਣ ਕਹੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥
jinHee naam visaari-aa koorhay kahan kahaNniH.
Those who have forsaken God’s Name, talk about false worldly things only.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਹੀ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਪੰਚ ਚੋਰ ਤਿਨਾ ਘਰੁ ਮੁਹਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥
panch chor tinaa ghar muhniH ha-umai andar saNniH.
The five thieves (lust, anger, greed, attachment, and ego) keep robbing the spiritual wealth from their hearts; because of ego, they easily succumb to them.
ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ) ਪੰਜੇ ਚੋਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ (ਹਿਰਦਾ-) ਘਰ ਲੁੱਟਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਣ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਸੰਨ੍ਹ ਲੱਗੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ। ।
ਸਾਕਤ ਮੁਠੇ ਦੁਰਮਤੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥
saakat muthay durmatee har ras na jaanaNniH.
The faithless cynics are defrauded by their own evil intellect; they do not know the sublime essence of God’s Name.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਟੁੱਟੇ ਹੋਏ ਖੋਟੀ ਮਤ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਹੱਥੀਂ ਹੀ) ਲੁੱਟੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ ਉਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਪਛਾਣਦੇ।
ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਭਰਮਿ ਲੁਟਾਇਆ ਬਿਖੁ ਸਿਉ ਰਚਹਿ ਰਚੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥
jinHee amrit bharam lutaa-i-aa bikh si-o racheh rachaNniH.
Those who have squandered away the ambrosial nectar of Naam through doubt, remain engrossed in the love for Maya, the poison for the spiritual health.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ (ਮਨ ਦੀ) ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ (ਹੀ) ਲੁਟਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਉਹ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਮਾਇਆ) ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਪਿਆਰ ਪਾਈ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਦੁਸਟਾ ਸੇਤੀ ਪਿਰਹੜੀ ਜਨ ਸਿਉ ਵਾਦੁ ਕਰੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥
dustaa saytee pirharhee jan si-o vaad karaNniH.
They make friends with the wicked but argue with the devotees of God.
ਭੈੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸੇਵਕਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਝਗੜਾ ਬਣਾਈ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਕਤ ਨਰਕ ਮਹਿ ਜਮਿ ਬਧੇ ਦੁਖ ਸਹੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥
naanak saakat narak meh jam baDhay dukh sahaNniH.
O’ Nanak, the faithless cynics, in the grip of spiritual death, endure agony as if they are in hell.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਟੁੱਟੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਦੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਝੇ ਹੋਏ , ਮਾਨੋ ਨਰਕਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪਏ ਦੁੱਖ ਹੀ ਸਹਾਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਪਇਐ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਜਿਵ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਤਿਵੈ ਰਹੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥੧॥
pa-i-ai kirat kamaavday jiv raakhahi tivai rahaNniH. ||1||
O’ God, they keep doing deeds according to their pre-ordained destiny and they live as You keep them. ||1||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਿਵੇਂ ਤੂੰ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਤਿਵੇਂ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ, ਪਿਛਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੁਣ ਭੀ ਉਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੀ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥

Third Guru:
ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਤਾਣੁ ਨਿਤਾਣੇ ਤਿਸੁ ॥
jinHee satgur sayvi-aa taan nitaanay tis.
Even the powerless person who follows the teachings of the true Guru, becomes spiritually powerful to stand against any evil.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਹੜਾ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਨਿਤਾਣਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਭੀ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ (ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ) ਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਆਤਮਕ) ਬਲ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਸਿ ਗਿਰਾਸਿ ਸਦਾ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਜਮੁ ਜੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਤਿਸੁ ॥
saas giraas sadaa man vasai jam johi na sakai tis.
With every breath and morsel of food, he experiences God’s presence in his mind and the fear of death does not bother him at all.
ਹਰੇਕ ਸਾਹ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਹਰੇਕ ਗਿਰਾਹੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਢੁਕਦੀ।
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਰਸੁ ਕਵਲਾ ਸੇਵਕਿ ਤਿਸੁ ॥
hirdai har har naam ras kavlaa sayvak tis.
The nectar of God’s Name is always there in his heart and the goddess of wealth becomes his servant.
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,ਲੱਛਮੀ (ਮਾਇਆ) ਉਸ ਦੀ ਦਾਸੀ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ )।
ਹਰਿ ਦਾਸਾ ਕਾ ਦਾਸੁ ਹੋਇ ਪਰਮ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਤਿਸੁ ॥
har daasaa kaa daas ho-ay param padaarath tis.
He keeps conducting himself like the servant of the devotees of God, and is therefore blessed with God’s Name, the supreme wealth.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਸੇਵਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਸੇਵਕ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਪਦਾਰਥ (ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ) ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਜਿਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਵਸੈ ਹਉ ਸਦ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੈ ਤਿਸੁ ॥
naanak man tan jis parabh vasai ha-o sad kurbaanai tis.
O’ Nanak, I am forever dedicated to that person, within whose mind and heart God dwells.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ-) ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਦਾ ਨਾਮ) ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਕਉ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਰਸੁ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਸਿਉ ਤਿਸੁ ॥੨॥
jinH ka-o poorab likhi-aa ras sant janaa si-o tis. ||2||
The love for the Guru wells up only within those who are preordained. ||2||
ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਪਿਆਰ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥

ਜੋ ਬੋਲੇ ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਸੋ ਪਰਮੇਸਰਿ ਸੁਣਿਆ ॥
jo bolay pooraa satguroo so parmaysar suni-aa.
O’ my friends, whatever the true Guru speaks, God listens to that.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਜਿਹੜਾ (ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦਾ) ਬਚਨ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਉਸ ਵਲ ਧਿਆਨ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸੋਈ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਜਗਤ ਮਹਿ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਭਣਿਆ ॥
so-ee varti-aa jagat meh ghat ghat mukh bhani-aa.
That word of the true Guru prevails in the entire world, and then every person utters it with his mouth.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਉਹ ਬਚਨ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹਰੇਕ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ (ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹਰੇਕ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ) ਮੂੰਹ ਨਾਲ ਉਚਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਹੁਤੁ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਸਾਹਿਬੈ ਨਹ ਜਾਹੀ ਗਣੀਆ ॥
bahut vadi-aa-ee-aa saahibai nah jaahee ganee-aa.
So many are the glories of the Master-God, they cannot even be counted.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਗੁਣ ਹਨ ਗਿਣੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੇ।
ਸਚੁ ਸਹਜੁ ਅਨਦੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸਿ ਸਚੀ ਗੁਰ ਮਣੀਆ ॥
sach sahj anad satguroo paas sachee gur manee-aa.
God’s eternal Name, spiritual poise and bliss are received from the true Guru; the true teachings of the Guru is like a jewel.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਨਾਮ, ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ, ਆਤਮਕ ਅਨੰਦ (ਇਹ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਪਾਸ (ਹੀ ਹਨ, ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਮਿਲਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ)। ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਰਤਨ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੰਤ ਸਵਾਰੇ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮਿ ਸਚੇ ਜਿਉ ਬਣਿਆ ॥੧੨॥
naanak sant savaaray paarbarahm sachay ji-o bani-aa. ||12||
O’ Nanak, God has so embellishes the saintly devotees that they become like the eternal God Himself. ||12||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੇਵਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਆਪ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸੰਤ ਜਨ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਰਗੇ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧੨॥

Shalok, Third Guru:
ਅਪਣਾ ਆਪੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਣਈ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਤਾ ਦੂਰਿ ॥
apnaa aap na pachhaan-ee har parabh jaataa door.
One who does not understand himself and deems God as far away,
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਕਦੇ ਪਰਖਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਤੇ ਦੂਰ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਵਿਸਰੀ ਕਿਉ ਮਨੁ ਰਹੈ ਹਜੂਰਿ ॥
gur kee sayvaa visree ki-o man rahai hajoor.
forgets the Guru’s teachings; how can his mind remain in God’s Presence?
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਕਾਰ (ਸਦਾ) ਭੁੱਲੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, (ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ) ਮਨ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ) ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ (ਕਦੇ) ਨਹੀਂ ਟਿਕਦਾ।
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਝੂਠੈ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਕੂਰਿ ॥
manmukh janam gavaa-i-aa jhoothai laalach koor.
This self-willed person wastes away his life in worthless greed and falsehood.
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਝੂਠੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਆਪਣਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਗਵਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਬਖਸਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਅਨੁ ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਹਦੂਰਿ ॥੧॥
naanak bakhas milaa-i-an sachai sabad hadoor. ||1||
O’ Nanak, bestowing mercy, God unites those with Himself who remains in His presence by reflecting on the Guru’s divine words of His praises.. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਵਾਲੇ ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ) ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਮਿਲਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥

Third Guru:
ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਚਾ ਸੋਹਿਲਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੋਵਿੰਦੁ ॥
har parabh sachaa sohilaa gurmukh naam govind.
God, the master of the universe is eternal, the divine word of His praises and His Name is received by following the Guru’s teachings.
ਹਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦਾ ਗੀਤ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ)।
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹਣਾ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਆਨੰਦੁ ॥
an-din naam salaahnaa har japi-aa man aanand.
One’s mind becomes blissful by always singing God’s praises and remembering Him with loving devotion.
(ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ) ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਹੀ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਿਆਂ (ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਪੂਰਨੁ ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦੁ ॥
vadbhaagee har paa-i-aa pooran parmaanand.
God, the perfect embodiment of supreme bliss, is realized only by great good fortune.
ਪਰਮ ਆਨੰਦ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਪੂਰਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹਿਆ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਨ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਭੰਗੁ ॥੨॥
jan naanak naam sahaali-aa bahurh na man tan bhang. ||2||
O’ Nanak! those devotees who have praised God’s Name, their minds and hearts never feel separate from Him again. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ-ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ) ਦਾਸਾਂ ਨੇ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਤਨ ਵਿਚ ਮੁੜ ਕਦੇ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲੋਂ) ਵਿੱਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣਦੀ ॥੨॥
