ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Shalok, First Guru:
ਚੋਰਾ ਜਾਰਾ ਰੰਡੀਆ ਕੁਟਣੀਆ ਦੀਬਾਣੁ ॥
choraa jaaraa randee-aa kutnee-aa deebaan.
Thieves, adulterers, prostitutes and pimps have their own groups,
ਚੋਰਾਂ, ਲੁੱਚੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ, ਵਿਭਚਾਰਨ ਔਰਤਾਂ ਤੇ ਦੱਲੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਆਪੋ ਵਿਚ ਬਹਿਣ ਖਲੋਣ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਵੇਦੀਨਾ ਕੀ ਦੋਸਤੀ ਵੇਦੀਨਾ ਕਾ ਖਾਣੁ ॥
vaydeenaa kee dostee vaydeenaa kaa khaan.
these non religious people create and nurture their friendship.
ਇਹਨਾਂ ਧਰਮ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਆਪੋ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਤਾ ਤੇ ਆਪੋ ਵਿਚ ਖਾਣ ਪੀਣ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਿਫਤੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ਸਦਾ ਵਸੈ ਸੈਤਾਨੁ ॥
siftee saar na jaannee sadaa vasai saitaan.
They do not know the worth of God’s praises because evil thoughts are always present in their minds, as if the satan always resides within them.
ਰੱਬ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਦਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ, (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ, ਮਾਨੋ) ਸਦਾ ਸ਼ੈਤਾਨ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗਦਹੁ ਚੰਦਨਿ ਖਉਲੀਐ ਭੀ ਸਾਹੂ ਸਿਉ ਪਾਣੁ ॥
gadahu chandan kha-ulee-ai bhee saahoo si-o paan.
No matter how much one tries, they don’t change their habits; they are like donkeys who, even when anointed with sandal paste, love to roll in dust.
(ਸਮਝਾਇਆਂ ਭੀ ਸਮਝਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ, ਜਿਵੇਂ) ਖੋਤੇ ਨੂੰ ਜੇ ਚੰਦਨ ਨਾਲ ਮਲੀਏ ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਵਿਹਾਰ ਸੁਆਹ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਕੂੜੈ ਕਤਿਐ ਕੂੜਾ ਤਣੀਐ ਤਾਣੁ ॥
naanak koorhai kati-ai koorhaa tanee-ai taan.
O’ Nanak, just as by spinning falsehood, a fabric of falsehood is woven; similarly they are preordained this kind of life based on their past deeds.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! “ਕੂੜ” ਦਾ ਸੂਤਰਕੱਤਣ ਨਾਲ “ਕੂੜ” ਦਾ ਤਾਣੀ ਹੀ ਤਣੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਕੂੜਾ ਕਪੜੁ ਕਛੀਐ ਕੂੜਾ ਪੈਨਣੁ ਮਾਣੁ ॥੧॥
koorhaa kaparh kachhee-ai koorhaa painan maan. ||1||
If clothes are stitched by taking wrong measurement, one will not look good wearing these; similarly false deeds will beget false pride. ||1||
ਕੂੜ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਕੱਪੜਾ ਕੱਛੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਪਹਿਨੀਦਾ ਹੈ (ਇਸ “ਕੂੜ”-ਰੂਪ ਪੁਸ਼ਾਕ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ “ਕੂੜ” ਹੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, “ਖਤਿਅਹੁ ਜੰਮੇ ਖਤੇ ਕਰਨਿ ਤ ਖਤਿਆ ਵਿਚਿ ਪਾਹਿ”) ॥੧॥

First Guru:
ਬਾਂਗਾ ਬੁਰਗੂ ਸਿੰਙੀਆ ਨਾਲੇ ਮਿਲੀ ਕਲਾਣ ॥
baaNgaa burgoo sinyee-aa naalay milee kalaan.
The muslim priest earns his living by giving a call for prayer, the beggar by playing a flute, the Yogi by blowing horn, and minstrel by eulogizing the rich.
(ਮੁੱਲਾਂ) ਬਾਂਗ ਦੇ ਕੇ, (ਫ਼ਕੀਰ) ਤੂਤੀ ਵਜਾ ਕੇ, (ਜੋਗੀ) ਸਿੰਙੀ ਵਜਾ ਕੇ, (ਮਿਰਾਸੀ) ਕਲਾਣ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਮੰਗਦੇ ਹਨ);
ਇਕਿ ਦਾਤੇ ਇਕਿ ਮੰਗਤੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥
ik daatay ik mangtay naam tayraa parvaan.
O’ God! in this way You have made some the givers and some beggars; but to me only the blessing of Your Name is acceptable.
(ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ) ਕਈ ਮੰਗਤੇ ਤੇ ਕਈ ਦਾਤੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਸੁਣਿ ਕੈ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਹਉ ਤਿਨਾ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੁ ॥੨॥
naanak jinHee sun kai mani-aa ha-o tinaa vitahu kurbaan. ||2||
O Nanak, I am dedicated to those who after listening, have believed in Your Name. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਵਿਚ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਜੋੜ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਹਾਂ ॥੨॥

Pauree:
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਭੁ ਕੂੜੁ ਹੈ ਕੂੜੋ ਹੋਇ ਗਇਆ ॥
maa-i-aa moh sabh koorh hai koorho ho-ay ga-i-aa.
The love for worldly riches and power is totally false and the one who indulges in it also becomes false.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਨਿਰੋਲ ਝੂਠ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਝੂਠ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਜੋ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਉਮੈ ਝਗੜਾ ਪਾਇਓਨੁ ਝਗੜੈ ਜਗੁ ਮੁਇਆ ॥
ha-umai jhagrhaa paa-i-on jhagrhai jag mu-i-aa.
God himself has created the strife of egotism; caught in this strife, the entire world is deteriorating spiritually.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ‘ਹਉਮੈ’ ਦਾ ਝਗੜਾ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾਹੈ; ਇਸ ਝਗੜੇਵਿਚ (ਪੈ ਕੇ) ਜਗਤ ਮਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਝਗੜੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਓਨੁ ਇਕੋ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ॥
gurmukh jhagarh chukaa-i-on iko rav rahi-aa.
God has ended this strife of the one who follows the Guru’s teachings; such a person now experiences one God pervading everywhere.
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਝੰਬੇਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਮੁਕਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹੀ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਭੁ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਭਉਜਲੁ ਤਰਿ ਗਇਆ ॥
sabh aatam raam pachhaani-aa bha-ojal tar ga-i-aa.
Yes, by recognizing the same God pervading everywhere, he crosses over this worldly ocean of vices.
ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਪਛਾਣ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਇਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਇਆ ॥੧੪॥
jot samaanee jot vich har naam sam-i-aa. ||14||
He remains attuned to God’s Name; his light (soul) merges with God, the supreme soul. ||14||
ਉਸ ਦੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੪॥

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭੀਖਿਆ ਦੇਹਿ ਮੈ ਤੂੰ ਸੰਮ੍ਰਥੁ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ॥
satgur bheekhi-aa deh mai tooN samrath daataar.
O’ the true Guru! you are all-powerful giver, bless me with the charity of Naam,
ਹੇ ਗੁਰੂ! ਤੂੰ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਕਰਨ ਜੋਗਾ ਹੈਂ, ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਨਾਮ’ ਦਾ) ਖ਼ੈਰ ਪਾ ,
ਹਉਮੈ ਗਰਬੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੀਐ ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ॥
ha-umai garab nivaaree-ai kaam kroDh ahaNkaar.
so that I may renounce my ego, false pride, lust, anger and arrogance.
(ਤਾਂ ਜੋ) ਮੇਰੀਹਉਮੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਕਾਮ ਤੇ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ।
ਲਬੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਪਰਜਾਲੀਐ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥
lab lobh parjaalee-ai naam milai aaDhaar.
And I may renounce my craving for dainties and greed for worldly wealth, If I am blessed with the support of God’s Name,
ਤੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਚਸਕਾ ਤੇ ਲੋਭ ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸੜ ਜਾਏ, ਜੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮਦਾ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਏ,
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਵਤਨ ਨਿਰਮਲਾ ਮੈਲਾ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
ahinis navtan nirmalaa mailaa kabahooN na ho-ay.
which is ever-fresh, new and immaculate; it never gets soiled by vices.
ਜੋ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਨਵੇਂ ਤੋਂ ਨਵਾਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ’ਨਾਮ’ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਕਦੇ ਮੈਲਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਛੁਟੀਐ ਨਦਰਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥
naanak ih biDh chhutee-ai nadar tayree sukh ho-ay. ||1||
O’ Nanak!in this way, we are saved from the vices; O’ God! we receive this celestial peace through Your grace. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਇਸ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚੀਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਇਹ ਸੁਖ ਤੇਰੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥

First Guru:
ਇਕੋ ਕੰਤੁ ਸਬਾਈਆ ਜਿਤੀ ਦਰਿ ਖੜੀਆਹ ॥
iko kant sabaa-ee-aa jitee dar kharhee-aah.
One Husband-God is the savior of all the soul-brides who are in His refuge.
ਜਿਤਨੀਆਂ ਭੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀਆਂ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਬੂਹੇ ਤੇ ਖਲੋਤੀਆਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਹਨ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹੀ ਰਾਖਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਕੰਤੈ ਰਤੀਆ ਪੁਛਹਿ ਬਾਤੜੀਆਹ ॥੨॥
naanak kantai ratee-aa puchheh baat-rhee-aah. ||2||
O’ Nanak, imbued in the love of their Husband-God, they converse with each other about Him. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੀਆਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀਆਂ ਹੀਗੱਲਾਂ (ਇਕ ਦੂਜੀ ਪਾਸੋਂ) ਪੁੱਛਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ॥੨॥

ਸਭੇ ਕੰਤੈ ਰਤੀਆ ਮੈ ਦੋਹਾਗਣਿ ਕਿਤੁ ॥
sabhay kantai ratee-aa mai dohaagan kit.
All the soul-brides are imbued with the love of their Husband-God; of what account am I, the unfortunate one?
ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀਆਂ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੀਆਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਹਨ, (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਸੋਹਾਗਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਾਮ੍ਹਣੇ) ਮੈਂ ਮੰਦੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਕਿਸ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਹਾਂ?
ਮੈ ਤਨਿ ਅਵਗਣ ਏਤੜੇ ਖਸਮੁ ਨ ਫੇਰੇ ਚਿਤੁ ॥੩॥
mai tan avgan -ayt-rhay khasam na fayray chit. ||3||
So many are the sins in my body that the Master-God does not even pay attention to me. ||3||
ਮੇਰੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਇਤਨੇ ਔਗੁਣ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਖਸਮ ਮੇਰੇ ਵਲ ਧਿਆਨ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ ॥੩॥

First Guru:
ਹਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਜਿਨਾ ਦੈ ਵਾਤਿ ॥
ha-o balihaaree tin ka-o sifat jinaa dai vaat.
I am dedicated to those soul- brides who praise God with their mouth.
ਮੈਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਹਾਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਹੈ।
ਸਭਿ ਰਾਤੀ ਸੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਇਕ ਮੈ ਦੋਹਾਗਣਿ ਰਾਤਿ ॥੪॥
sabh raatee sohaaganee ik mai dohaagan raat. ||4||
O’ God! all these fortunate soul-brides enjoy Your company throughout their life; please bless me, the unfortunate one, with Your company for a little while. ||4||
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਤੂੰ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਰਾਤਾਂ ਸੁਹਾਗਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੇ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ, ਇਕ ਰਾਤ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਛੁੱਟੜ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਦੇਹ ॥੪॥
ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:
ਦਰਿ ਮੰਗਤੁ ਜਾਚੈ ਦਾਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਦੀਜੈ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਿ ॥
dar mangat jaachai daan har deejai kirpaa kar.
O’ God, I am a beggar, begging from You; bestow mercy and bless me with the gift of Your Name.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਮੰਗਤਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਬੂਹੇ ਤੇ (ਆ ਕੇ) ਖ਼ੈਰ ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਖ਼ੈਰ ਪਾ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਮਿਲਾਇ ਜਨੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰਿ ॥
gurmukh layho milaa-ay jan paavai naam har.
O’ God! unite me with You through the Guru, so that this devotee of Yours may receive Your Name,
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਜੋੜ ਲੈ, ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਸੇਵਕ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲਵਾਂ,
ਅਨਹਦ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਜਾਇ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਧਰਿ ॥
anhad sabad vajaa-ay jotee jot Dhar.
and unite my light (soul) with Your supreme soul so thatI may continually to sing the divine word of Your praises.
ਤੇਰੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਟਿਕਾ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦਾ ਇਕ-ਰਸ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਵਾਂ,
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਜੈ ਜੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਹਰਿ ॥
hirdai har gun gaa-ay jai jai sabad har.
I may sing Your praises and glory with my heart through the Guru’s words.
ਤੇਰੀ ਜੈ ਜੈਕਾਰ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਤੇ ਗੁਣ ਮੈਂ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਗਾਵਾਂ,
ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਆਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਰਿ ॥੧੫॥
jag meh vartai aap har saytee pareet kar. ||15||
O’ God! I may love You and firmly believe that You pervade everywhere in the world. ||15||
ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਾਂ (ਤੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਯਕੀਨ ਬਣੇ ਕਿ) ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ ॥੧੫॥

Shalok, First Guru:
ਜਿਨੀ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਰਸੁ ਕੰਤ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਸਾਉ ॥
jinee na paa-i-o paraym ras kant na paa-i-o saa-o.
Those soul-brides who have not enjoyed the bliss of their Husband-God’s loveand have not tasted the relish of union with Him,
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਨਾਹ ਮਾਣਿਆ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ ਨਾਹ ਚੱਖਿਆ,
ਸੁੰਞੇ ਘਰ ਕਾ ਪਾਹੁਣਾ ਜਿਉ ਆਇਆ ਤਿਉ ਜਾਉ ॥੧॥
sunjay ghar kaa paahunaa ji-o aa-i-aa ti-o jaa-o. ||1||
they depart this world without any spiritual gain; they are like the guest in a deserted house who goes back empty handed as he came. ||1||
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਕੇ ਇਉਂ ਹੀ ਖ਼ਾਲੀ ਗਈਆਂ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਸੁੰਞੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਆਇਆ ਪਰਾਹੁਣਾ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਿਵੇਂ ਤੁਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ॥੧॥

First Guru:
ਸਉ ਓਲਾਮ੍ਹ੍ਹੇ ਦਿਨੈ ਕੇ ਰਾਤੀ ਮਿਲਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਸਹੰਸ ॥
sa-o olaamHay dinai kay raatee milniH sahaNs.
One receives hundreds of reprimands for the sins committed during the day time and thousands for the sins of the night time;
ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਦਿਨ ਦੇ ਵੇਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਮੰਦ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੌ ਉਲਾਮੇ ਮਿਲਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਰਾਤ ਵੇਲੇ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਹਜ਼ਾਰਾਂ;
ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਲਾਹਣੁ ਛਡਿ ਕੈ ਕਰੰਗੀ ਲਗਾ ਹੰਸੁ ॥
sifat salaahan chhad kai karangee lagaa hans.
because his swan-like being has forsaken singing the pearl-like praises of God and is attached to carcass-like vices.
ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਜੀਵ-ਹੰਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ (ਰੂਪ ਮੋਤੀ) ਛੱਡ ਕੇ (ਵਿਕਾਰ ਰੂਪ) ਮੁਰਦਾਰਾਂ (ਦੇ ਖਾਣ) ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ।
ਫਿਟੁ ਇਵੇਹਾ ਜੀਵਿਆ ਜਿਤੁ ਖਾਇ ਵਧਾਇਆ ਪੇਟੁ ॥
fit ivayhaa jeevi-aa jit khaa-ay vaDhaa-i-aa payt.
Cursed is such life, where one has increased his waistline by excessive eating.
ਫਿਟੇ-ਮੂੰਹ ਅਜੇਹੇ ਜੀਊਣ ਨੂੰ ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਖਾ ਖਾ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਢਿੱਡ ਵਧਾ ਲਿਆ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਣੁ ਸਭੋ ਦੁਸਮਨੁ ਹੇਤੁ ॥੨॥
naanak sachay naam vin sabho dusman hayt. ||2||
O’ Nanak, without remembering God’s Name with adoration, all other love turns out to be an enemy. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਇਸ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਮੋਹ ਵੈਰੀ ਹੋ ਢੁਕਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥

Pauree:
ਢਾਢੀ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਨਿਤ ਜਨਮੁ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ ॥
dhaadhee gun gaavai nit janam savaari-aa.
The minstrel always sings the praises of God and embellishes his life.
ਢਾਢੀ ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ;
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੇਵਿ ਸਲਾਹਿ ਸਚਾ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਿਆ ॥
gurmukh sayv salaahi sachaa ur Dhaari-aa.
He enshrines the eternal God in his heart by remembering God with adoration and by singing His praises through the Guru’s teachings.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਬੰਦਗੀ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
