ਭਾਹਿ ਬਲੰਦੜੀ ਬੁਝਿ ਗਈ ਰਖੰਦੜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਪਿ ॥
bhaahi baland-rhee bujh ga-ee rakhand-rho parabh aap.
The fire-like painful anguish of the worldly desires of a person is put out, because God Himself becomes the savior of the one who remembers Him.
ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ) ਆਪ ਜੀਵ ਦਾ ਰਾਖਾ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਦੀ ਬਲਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਬੁੱਝ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਨਿ ਉਪਾਈ ਮੇਦਨੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਪਿ ॥੨॥
jin upaa-ee maydnee naanak so parabh jaap. ||2||
O’ Nanak, meditate on that God who has created this universe. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਰਚੀ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰ ॥੨॥

ਜਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਏ ਦਇਆਲ ਨ ਬਿਆਪੈ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
jaa parabh bha-ay da-i-aal na bi-aapai maa-i-aa.
When God becomes merciful then Maya does not afflict a person.
ਜਦੋਂ (ਜੀਵ ਉੱਤੇ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੀ ਮੇਹਰਬਾਨ ਹੋਣ ਤਾਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਕੋਟਿ ਅਘਾ ਗਏ ਨਾਸ ਹਰਿ ਇਕੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥
kot aghaa ga-ay naas har ik Dhi-aa-i-aa.
Millions of sins are destroyed by meditating on the one God with loving devotion.
ਇਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਿਆਂ ਕਰੋੜਾਂ ਹੀ ਪਾਪ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਭਏ ਸਰੀਰ ਜਨ ਧੂਰੀ ਨਾਇਆ ॥
nirmal bha-ay sareer jan Dhooree naa-i-aa.
Our body becomes immaculate by humbly serving the devotees of God.
ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਦਾਸਾਂ ਦੀ ਚਰਨ-ਧੂੜ ਵਿਚ ਨ੍ਹਾਤਿਆਂ ਸਰੀਰ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਮਨ ਤਨ ਭਏ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਪੂਰਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
man tan bha-ay santokh pooran parabh paa-i-aa.
In the company of holy persons, one realizes the Perfect God, and his mind and heart become contented.
ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ) ਪੂਰਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਤਨ ਦੋਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਤਰੇ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਸੰਗਿ ਲੋਗ ਕੁਲ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥੧੮॥
taray kutamb sang log kul sabaa-i-aa. ||18||
He is saved along with his family and all his ancestors. ||18||
ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਦੇ ਲੋਕ ਤੇ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਕੁਲਾਂ ਸਮੇਤ ਪਾਰ ਉੱਤਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੮॥

ਗੁਰ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਗੁਰ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰਨ ਨਾਰਾਇਣਹ ॥
gur gobind gopaal gur gur pooran naaraa-ineh.
The Guru is the embodiment of God, the Master of the universe; Guru is the embodiment of the all pervading God.
ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ-ਰੂਪ ਹੈ, ਗੋਪਾਲ-ਰੂਪ ਹੈ, ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ ਨਾਰਾਇਣ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਦਇਆਲ ਸਮਰਥ ਗੁਰ ਗੁਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਤਿਤ ਉਧਾਰਣਹ ॥੧॥
gur da-i-aal samrath gur gur naanak patit uDhaarneh. ||1||
O’ Nanak, the Guru is compassionate, all-powerful and the savior of sinners. ||1||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦਇਆ ਦਾ ਘਰ ਹੈ, ਸਮਰੱਥਾ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਵਿਕਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਤਾਰਨਹਾਰ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਭਉਜਲੁ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਅਸਗਾਹੁ ਗੁਰਿ ਬੋਹਿਥੈ ਤਾਰਿਅਮੁ ॥
bha-ojal bikham asgaahu gur bohithai taari-am.
The Guru is like a ship to cross over the dangerous, treacherous and unfathomable world-ocean of vices.
ਭਿਆਨਕ, ਕਠਨ ਅਤੇ ਅਥਾਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਉੱਤਰਨ ਲਈ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਇਕ ਜਹਾਜ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਪੂਰ ਕਰੰਮ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਚਰਣੀ ਲਗਿਆ ॥੨॥
naanak poor karamm satgur charnee lagi-aa. ||2||
O’ Nanak, perfect is the destiny of those who have sought the refuge of the true Guru and have humbly followed his teachings. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਚਰਨੀਂ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚੰਗੇ ਭਾਗ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨॥

Dhan Dhan gurdayv jis sang har japay.
Blessed is the Divine Guru in whose company one can remember God.
ਸਦਕੇ ਹਾਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਭਜਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਜਬ ਭਏ ਤ ਅਵਗੁਣ ਸਭਿ ਛਪੇ ॥
gur kirpaal jab bha-ay ta avgun sabh chhapay.
When the Guru becomes merciful, then all of one’s vices are dispelled.
ਜਦੋਂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮੇਹਰਬਾਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਔਗੁਣ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਨੀਚਹੁ ਉਚ ਥਪੇ ॥
paarbarahm gurdayv neechahu uch thapay.
Guru, the embodiment of God, uplifts and exalts the lowly.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੀਵਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚੇ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਾਟਿ ਸਿਲਕ ਦੁਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਲੀਨੇ ਅਪ ਦਸੇ ॥
kaat silak dukh maa-i-aa kar leenay ap dasay.
Cutting away the painful noose of Maya, He makes us His devotees,
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਦੁਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਕੱਟ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਬਣਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਣ ਗਾਏ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਰਸਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੇ ॥੧੯॥
gun gaa-ay bay-ant rasnaa har jasay. ||19||
and now, with our tongue, we can sing the virtues and praises of the infinite God. ||19||
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਰਿਹਾਂ) ਜੀਭ ਨਾਲ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾ ਸਕੀਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰ ਸਕੀਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧੯॥

ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟੰਤ ਏਕੋ ਸੁਨੀਅੰਤ ਏਕੋ ਵਰਤੰਤ ਏਕੋ ਨਰਹਰਹ ॥
daristaNt ayko sunee-ant ayko vartant ayko narhareh.
They behold only One God, hear only one God, and for them only one God is pervading everywhere.
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਉਹ ਖ਼ਲਕਤਿ ਦਾ ਸਾਈਂ ਹੀ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸੁਣੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਵਿਆਪਕ ਜਾਪਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਮ ਦਾਨੁ ਜਾਚੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਇਆਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਹ ॥੧॥
naam daan jaachant naanak da-i-aal purakh kirpaa karah. ||1||
O’ Nanak, on whom the merciful God bestows grace, they beg from Him the gift of His Naam. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਦਿਆਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਉਸ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਬੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਖ਼ੈਰ ਮੰਗਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥
ਹਿਕੁ ਸੇਵੀ ਹਿਕੁ ਸੰਮਲਾ ਹਰਿ ਇਕਸੁ ਪਹਿ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥
hik sayvee hik sammlaa har ikas peh ardaas.
This is my prayer before the one God, that I may always remember Him and enshrine Him in my heart.
ਮੇਰੀ ਇਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਾਸ ਹੀ ਅਰਜ਼ੋਈ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਸਿਮਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਰੱਖਾਂ।
ਨਾਮ ਵਖਰੁ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਚਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੀ ਰਾਸਿ ॥੨॥
naam vakhar Dhan sanchi-aa naanak sachee raas. ||2||
O’ Nanak, those who have amassed the commodity and wealth of Naam, this wealth of their is everlasting.||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰੂਪ ਸੌਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰੂਪ ਧਨ ਜੋੜਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਇਹ ਪੂੰਜੀ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੨॥

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦਇਆਲ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਪੂਰਨ ਇਕੁ ਏਹੁ ॥

Only the merciful and infinite God is pervading everywhere.
ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਇਹ ਦਿਆਲ ਤੇ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹੀ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ,
ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਦੂਜਾ ਕਹਾ ਕੇਹੁ ॥
sabh kichh aapay aap doojaa kahaa kayhu.
He by Himself is everything, who else can I speak of?
ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਹੈ, ਹੋਰ ਦੂਜਾ ਕੇਹੜਾ ਦੱਸਾਂ ?
ਆਪਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦਾਨੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਲੇਹੁ ॥
aap karahu parabh daan aapay aap layho.
O’ God, You Yourself bestow gifts, and You Yourself receive them.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਦਾਨ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਦਾਨ ਲੈਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ।
ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸਭੁ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਤੁਧੁ ਥੇਹੁ ॥
aavan jaanaa hukam sabh nihchal tuDh thayhu.
The cycles of birth and death of human beings is by Your command, but Your abode is eternal.
ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਜੰਮਣਾ ਤੇ ਮਰਨਾ-ਇਹ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਹੈ, ਤੇਰਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਸਦਾ ਅਟੱਲ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮੰਗੈ ਦਾਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਹੁ ॥੨੦॥੧॥
naanak mangai daan kar kirpaa naam dayh. ||20||1||
Nanak begs of You, O’ God, bestow mercy and bless me with Naam ||20||1||

One eternal God, realized by the grace of the true Guru:
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਥ ਕਛੂਅ ਨ ਜਾਨਉ ॥
naath kachhoo-a na jaan-o.
O my Master-God, I know nothing.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਕੁਝ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ।
ਮਨੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੈ ਹਾਥਿ ਬਿਕਾਨਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
man maa-i-aa kai haath bikaana-o. ||1|| rahaa-o.
My mind is so badly influenced by Maya, as if it is sold out to it.||1||Pause||
ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਹੱਥ ਵੇਚ ਚੁਕਿਆ ਹਾਂ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਤੁਮ ਕਹੀਅਤ ਹੌ ਜਗਤ ਗੁਰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥
tum kahee-at hou jagat gur su-aamee.
O’ God, You are called the Master of the universe,
ਹੇ ਨਾਥ! ਤੂੰ ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਖਸਮ ਅਖਵਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ,
ਹਮ ਕਹੀਅਤ ਕਲਿਜੁਗ ਕੇ ਕਾਮੀ ॥੧॥
ham kahee-at kalijug kay kaamee. ||1||
but we are the lustful people of Kalyug. ||1||
ਅਸੀਂ ਕਲਜੁਗੀ ਵਿਸ਼ਈ ਜੀਵ ਹਾਂ (ਮੇਰੀ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਕਰ) ॥੧॥
ਇਨ ਪੰਚਨ ਮੇਰੋ ਮਨੁ ਜੁ ਬਿਗਾਰਿਓ ॥
in panchan mayro man jo bigaari-o.
The five vices (lust, anger, greed, attachment and ego) have corrupted my mind so much,
ਇਹਨਾਂ (ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ) ਪੰਜਾਂ ਨੇ ਹੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਇਤਨਾ ਵਿਗਾੜ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ,
ਪਲੁ ਪਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਜੀ ਤੇ ਅੰਤਰੁ ਪਾਰਿਓ ॥੨॥
pal pal har jee tay antar paari-o. ||2||
that at every moment they lead me away from You.||2||
ਕਿ ਹਰ ਦਮ ਮੇਰੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਵਿੱਥ ਪਵਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ॥੨॥
ਜਤ ਦੇਖਉ ਤਤ ਦੁਖ ਕੀ ਰਾਸੀ ॥
jat daykh-a-u tat dukh kee raasee.
Wherever I look, I see loads of pain and suffering.
ਮੈਂ ਜਿੱਧਰ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਉੱਧਰ ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਸਿ-ਪੂੰਜੀ ਬਣੀ ਪਈ ਹੈ।
ਅਜੌਂ ਨ ਪਤ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਇ ਨਿਗਮ ਭਏ ਸਾਖੀ ॥੩॥
ajouN na pat-yaa-ay nigam bha-ay saakhee. ||3||
In spite of the fact that the scriptures like Vedas are testifying that infatuation with the vices have terrible consequences, my mind is still allured by these.||3||
ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ, ਵੇਦਾਦਿਕ ਧਰਮ-ਪੁਸਤਕ ਭੀ (ਸਾਖੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ) ਇਹੀ ਗਵਾਹੀ ਦੇ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ॥੩॥
ਗੋਤਮ ਨਾਰਿ ਉਮਾਪਤਿ ਸ੍ਵਾਮੀ ॥
gotam naar umaapat savaamee.
Gautam’s wife, Ahilya, and the god Shiva, the husband of Parvati,
ਗੌਤਮ ਦੀ ਵਹੁਟੀ ਅਹੱਲਿਆ, ਪਾਰਵਤੀ ਦਾ ਪਤੀ ਸ਼ਿਵ,
ਸੀਸੁ ਧਰਨਿ ਸਹਸ ਭਗ ਗਾਂਮੀ ॥੪॥
sees Dharan sahas bhag gaaNmee. ||4||
god Brahma and god Indra, with thousands of womb marks on his body, were all ruined by these vices in various ways.||4||
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ, ਹਜ਼ਾਰ ਭਗਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਿੰਨ੍ਹ ਵਾਲਾ ਇੰਦਰ-(ਇਹਨਾਂ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਪੰਜਾਂ ਨੇ ਹੀ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਕੀਤਾ) ॥੪॥
ਇਨ ਦੂਤਨ ਖਲੁ ਬਧੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਰਿਓ ॥
in dootan khal baDh kar maari-o.
These demons (vices) have so badly damaged my foolish mind,
ਇਹਨਾਂ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਨੇ (ਮੇਰੇ) ਮੂਰਖ (ਮਨ) ਨੂੰ ਬੁਰੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਾਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ,
ਬਡੋ ਨਿਲਾਜੁ ਅਜਹੂ ਨਹੀ ਹਾਰਿਓ ॥੫॥
bado nilaaj ajhoo nahee haari-o. ||5||
that even now this extremely shameless mind hasn’t got tired of them.||5||
ਇਹ ਮਨ ਬੜਾ ਬੇ-ਸ਼ਰਮ ਹੈ, ਅਜੇ ਭੀ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਮੁੜਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ॥੫॥
ਕਹਿ ਰਵਿਦਾਸ ਕਹਾ ਕੈਸੇ ਕੀਜੈ ॥
kahi ravidaas kahaa kaisay keejai.
Ravi Daas says: O’ God, where should I go and what should I do now?
ਰਵਿਦਾਸ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ-ਹੋਰ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਜਾਵਾਂ? ਹੋਰ ਕੀਹ ਕਰਾਂ?
ਬਿਨੁ ਰਘੁਨਾਥ ਸਰਨਿ ਕਾ ਕੀ ਲੀਜੈ ॥੬॥੧॥
bin raghunaath saran kaa kee leejai. ||6||1||
Instead of God’s protection, whose support should I seek? ||6||1||
