ਗਾਵੈ ਗਾਵਣਹਾਰੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਵਣੋ ॥
gaavai gaavanhaar sabad suhaavano.
By singing praises of the praiseworthy God through the Guru’s word, one’s life becomes beauteous.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਗਾਵਣ-ਜੋਗ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਲਾਹਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਮੰਨਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁੰਨ ਦਾਨ ਦਇਆ ਮਤੇ ॥
saalaahi saachay man satgur punn daan da-i-aa matay.
He who praise the eternal God by believing and following the true Guru’s teachings, his intellect becomes charitable and compassionate.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮੰਨ ਕੇ , ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਸਭ ਤੇ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਪਿਰ ਸੰਗਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਨਾਵੈ ਬੇਣੀ ਤ ਸੰਗਮੁ ਸਤ ਸਤੇ ॥
pir sang bhaavai sahj naavai baynee ta sangam sat satay.
One who feels happy in the company of the Master-God and remains intuitively imbued in His love; for him it is like ablution at the most sacred place called Sangam.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਤੀ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਖੁਸ਼ ਹੋਵੇ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅਡੋਲ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰੇ, ਇਹੀ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਸੁੱਚੇ ਤੋਂ ਸੁੱਚਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਬੇਣੀ ਸੰਗਮ (ਦਾ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ) ਹੈ।
ਆਰਾਧਿ ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਨਿਤ ਦੇਇ ਚੜੈ ਸਵਾਇਆ ॥
aaraaDh aykankaar saachaa nit day-ay charhai savaa-i-aa.
Worship and adore the One Creator-God, who always keeps giving more and more.
ਉਸ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਇੱਕ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰ, ਜੋ ਸਦਾ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜੋ ਦਿਨੋ ਦਿਨ ਵਧਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
ਗਤਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਮੀਤਾ ਸੰਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਨਦਰਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
gat sang meetaa santsangat kar nadar mayl milaa-i-aa. ||3||
O’ my friend, freedom from vices is attained by associating with the company of the saints; granting His grace, God unites us with the holy congregation. ||3||
ਹੇ ਮਿੱਤ੍ਰ! ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਮੋਖਸ਼ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਕਹਣੁ ਕਹੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ਕੇਵਡੁ ਆਖੀਐ ॥
kahan kahai sabh ko-ay kayvad aakhee-ai.
Everyone describes God’s virtues and says, He is great, but no one can say how great is He.
ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਬਾਰੇ ਕਥਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਬਹੁਤ ਵੱਡਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੱਸ ਸਕਦਾ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਕੇਡਾ ਵੱਡਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਉ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਨੀਚੁ ਅਜਾਣੁ ਸਮਝਾ ਸਾਖੀਐ ॥
ha-o moorakh neech ajaan samjhaa saakhee-ai.
I am foolish, lowly and ignorant; it is only through the Guru’s teachings that I can realize Him.
ਮੈਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਾਂ, ਨੀਵੇਂ ਸੁਭਾਵ ਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਅੰਞਾਣ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਤਾਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ (ਕੁਝ) ਸਮਝ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ
ਸਚੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਾਖੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਭਾਖੀ ਤਿਤੁ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਮੇਰਾ ॥
sach gur kee saakhee amrit bhaakhee tit man maani-aa mayraa.
True are the teachings of the Guru, his Words are the ambrosial nectar; my mind is pleased and appeased by them.
ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਸੱਚਾ ਹੈ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਚਨ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ-ਸਰੂਪ ਹਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮੇਰਾ ਚਿੱਤ ਪਤੀਜ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਕੂਚੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਲਾਦੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਚੈ ਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਰਾ ॥
kooch karahi aavahi bikh laaday sabad sachai gur mayraa.
People depart from this world loaded with sins and then come back again; but my Guru saves those from sins who attune to the divine words of God’s praises.
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਲਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਰਦੇ ਤੇ ਜੰਮਦੇ ਹਨ। ਪਰ ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੇਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਉਸ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਦੇ ਭਾਰ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਖਣਿ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਭਗਤਿ ਭੰਡਾਰੀ ਭਰਿਪੁਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸੋਈ ॥
aakhan tot na bhagat bhandaaree bharipur rahi-aa so-ee.
There is no end to narration of God’s glory and the treasure of His devotional worship; he is fully pervading everywhere.
ਸਾਈਂ ਦੀ ਉਸਤਿਤ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਅੰਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਦੇ ਭੰਡਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ। ਉਹ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਪੂਰੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਂਜੈ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਈ ॥੪॥੧॥
naanak saach kahai baynantee man maaNjai sach so-ee. ||4||1||
O’ Nanak, one who remembers God and prays before Him, removes the dirt of vices from his mind and beholds God pervading everywhere.||4||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਦਰ ਤੇ ਅਰਦਾਸਾਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਤੋਂ ਸਾਫ਼ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹੀ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੧॥

Raag Dhanaasaree, First Guru:
ਜੀਵਾ ਤੇਰੈ ਨਾਇ ਮਨਿ ਆਨੰਦੁ ਹੈ ਜੀਉ ॥
jeevaa tayrai naa-ay man aanand hai jee-o.
O’ God, by meditating on Your Name bliss wells up in my mind and I spiritually rejuvenate.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੀ! ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ (ਜੁੜ ਕੇ) ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਚੋ ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਉ ਗੁਣ ਗੋਵਿੰਦੁ ਹੈ ਜੀਉ ॥
saacho saachaa naa-o gun govind hai jee-o.
God, the master of the earth, is the treasure of virtues and eternal is His glory.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਿਲ ਦੀ ਜਾਣਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ। ਸੱਚਾ ਹੈ ਜੱਸ ਸੱਚੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦਾ।
ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਸਿਰਜੀ ਤਿਨਿ ਗੋਈ ॥
gur gi-aan apaaraa sirjanhaaraa jin sirjee tin go-ee.
The divine knowledge provided by the Guru tells that infinite is the Creator-God; He, who created this universe, destroys it too.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਿਆ ਗਿਆਨ ਦੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪਰਵਾਣਾ ਆਇਆ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਪਠਾਇਆ ਫੇਰਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਕੋਈ ॥
parvaanaa aa-i-aa hukam pathaa-i-aa fayr na sakai ko-ee.
When the call of death under God’s command comes, then none can challenge it.
ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਭੇਜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ (ਮੌਤ ਦਾ) ਸੱਦਾ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਕੋਈ ਜੀਵ (ਉਸ ਸੱਦੇ ਨੂੰ) ਮੋੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਲੇਖੈ ਆਪੇ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥
aapay kar vaykhai sir sir laykhai aapay surat bujhaa-ee.
He Himself creates the beings and looks after them; He preordained their destiny and He Himself imparts intellect to understand and follow it.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਲੇਖ ਲਿਖਦਾ ਹੈ,ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਲੇਖ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਜੀਵਾ ਸਚੀ ਨਾਈ ॥੧॥
naanak saahib agam agochar jeevaa sachee naa-ee. ||1||
O’ Nanak, the Master-God is inaccessible and unfathomable; I remain spiritually alive by meditating on His eternal Name. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਅਪਹੁੰਚ ਅਤੇ ਅਗਾਧ ਹੈ l ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਜੀਉਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਤੁਮ ਸਰਿ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ਆਇਆ ਜਾਇਸੀ ਜੀਉ ॥
tum sar avar na ko-ay aa-i-aa jaa-isee jee-o.
O’ God, there is no one equal to You; whosoever has come into this world will go from here one day.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੀ! ਤੇਰੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਦਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ, ਹੋਰ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਭੀ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਇਥੋਂ ਚਲਾ ਜਾਇਗਾ l
ਹੁਕਮੀ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਬੇੜੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਸੀ ਜੀਉ ॥
hukmee ho-ay nibayrh bharam chukaa-isee jee-o.
When one’s spiritual ignorance is removed by the Guru, then by God’s command he is freed from vices and his cycle of birth and death ends.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ (ਗੁਰੂ) ਦੂਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਾਤਮਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਏ ਅਕਥੁ ਕਹਾਏ ਸਚ ਮਹਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਸਮਾਣਾ ॥
gur bharam chukaa-ay akath kahaa-ay sach meh saach samaanaa.
When the Guru removes one’s doubt and makes him sing praises of God, whose virtues are indescribable; then he becomes like God and merges in Him.
ਗੁਰੂ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਬਿਆਨ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹਨ। ਸੱਚ ਅੰਦਰ ਸੱਚਾ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਆਪਿ ਸਮਾਏ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣਾ ॥
aap upaa-ay aap samaa-ay hukmee hukam pachhaanaa.
Such a person understands the command of God, the supreme commander; he realizes that God Himself creates and merges it back into Him.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਪਛਾਣ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਚੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਈ ਤੂ ਮਨਿ ਅੰਤਿ ਸਖਾਈ ॥
sachee vadi-aa-ee gur tay paa-ee too man ant sakhaa-ee.
O’ God, one who receives the gift of singing Your praises from the Guru, realizes Your presence in his mind and knows that You alone are his friend in the end.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ (ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ) ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲਈ ਹੈ, ਤੂੰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਤੇ ਅੰਤ ਸਮੇ ਭੀ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਾਥੀ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈਂ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਜਾ ਨਾਮਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੨॥
naanak saahib avar na doojaa naam tayrai vadi-aa-ee. ||2||
O’ Nanak, there is no other Master except God; O’ God glory is received both here and hereafter by meditating on Your Name. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! -ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਗੈਰ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਮਾਲਕ ਨਹੀਂ,। ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆਂ (ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ) ਆਦਰ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਤੂ ਸਚਾ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੁ ਅਲਖ ਸਿਰੰਦਿਆ ਜੀਉ ॥
too sachaa sirjanhaar alakh sirandi-aa jee-o.
O’ the incomprehensible God, You are eternal and creator of all.
ਹੇ ਅਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟ ਰਚਨਹਾਰ! ਤੂੰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ ਤੇ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ।
ਏਕੁ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਦੁਇ ਰਾਹ ਵਾਦ ਵਧੰਦਿਆ ਜੀਉ ॥
ayk saahib du-ay raah vaad vaDhandi-aa jee-o.
There is only one Master who has put into motion the two ways of life (materialism and spirituality), by which conflicts keep multiplying.
ਸੁਆਮੀ ਕੇਵਲ ਇਕ ਹੀ ਹੈ। ਜਿਸ ਨੇ (ਭਗਤੀ ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ) ਦੋ ਰਸਤੇ ਚਲਾਏ ਹਨ, ਜਿਸ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਝਗੜੇ ਵਧਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਦੁਇ ਰਾਹ ਚਲਾਏ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਬਾਏ ਜਨਮਿ ਮੁਆ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥
du-ay raah chalaa-ay hukam sabaa-ay janam mu-aa sansaaraa.
Yes it is God who has initiated both the ways, all beings are under His command, and the world keeps on going through birth and death.
ਦੋਵੇਂ ਰਸਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਹੀ ਤੋਰੇ ਹਨ, ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ ਉਸੇ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਹਨ, (ਉਸੇ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ) ਜਗਤ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਤੇ ਮਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋ ਬੇਲੀ ਬਿਖੁ ਲਾਦੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਭਾਰਾ ॥
naam binaa naahee ko baylee bikh laadee sir bhaaraa.
Except Naam there is no other true companion but the mortal is amassing loads of sins on his head.
ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਸਾਥੀ-ਮਿੱਤਰ ਨਹੀਂ, ਜੀਵ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਦਾ ਭਾਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਇਕੱਠਾ ਕਰੀ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਹੁਕਮੀ ਆਇਆ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ॥
hukmee aa-i-aa hukam na boojhai hukam savaaranhaaraa.
One comes into this world by God’s will, but doesn’t understand His will; and doesn’t realize that only by obeying His command, one can embellish oneself.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਅੰਦਰ ਬੰਦਾ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ। ਕੇਵਲ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਹੀ ਬੰਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਸਸ਼ੋਭਤ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਿਞਾਪੈ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੩॥
naanak saahib sabad sinjaapai saachaa sirjanhaaraa. ||3||
O’ Nanak, only by following the Guru’s word, one realizes that the Master of the world is eternal and the Creator of all.||3||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆਂ ਇਹ ਪਛਾਣ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸਭ ਦਾ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਭਗਤ ਸੋਹਹਿ ਦਰਵਾਰਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਇਆ ਜੀਉ ॥
bhagat soheh darvaar sabad suhaa-i-aa jee-o.
O’ God, adorned by the Guru’s word, devotees look beauteous in Your presence.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨਾਲ ਸਸ਼ੋਭਤ ਹੋਏ ਹੋਏ, ਭਗਤ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਬੋਲਹਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਣਿ ਰਸਨ ਰਸਾਇਆ ਜੀਉ ॥
boleh amrit baan rasan rasaa-i-aa jee-o.
They recite the ambrosial divine word with their tongue, and they imbue their tongue with the divine relish.
ਉਹ ਬੰਦੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਜੀਭ ਨਾਲ ਉਚਾਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜੀਭ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਬਾਣੀ ਨਾਲ ਇਕ-ਰਸ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਰਸਨ ਰਸਾਏ ਨਾਮਿ ਤਿਸਾਏ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਵਿਕਾਣੇ ॥
rasan rasaa-ay naam tisaa-ay gur kai sabad vikaanay.
Yes, immersed in its relish they become thirsty for God’s Name; they dedicate themselves to the Guru’s word.
ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਜੀਭ ਨੂੰ ਰਸਾ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਨਾਮ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਿਆਸ ਵਧਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ
ਪਾਰਸਿ ਪਰਸਿਐ ਪਾਰਸੁ ਹੋਏ ਜਾ ਤੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਣੇ ॥
paaras parsi-ai paaras ho-ay jaa tayrai man bhaanay.
O’ God, when they became pleasing to Your mind, by following the Guru’s teachings, which is like a philosopher’s stone, they become like the Guru.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਤੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ-ਪਾਰਸ ਨਾਲ ਛੁਹ ਕੇ ਆਪ ਭੀ ਪਾਰਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ
ਅਮਰਾ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਗਿਆਨ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
amraa pad paa-i-aa aap gavaa-i-aa virlaa gi-aan veechaaree.
They erase their self conceit and attain the immortal status; however it is only a rare person who reflects on this divine wisdom.
ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਸਵੈ-ਹੰਗਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ, ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਦਰਜੇ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਕੋਈ ਟਾਂਵਾਂ ਟੱਲਾ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨ ਨੂੰ ਵੀਚਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਤ ਸੋਹਨਿ ਦਰਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਸਾਚੇ ਕੇ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ॥੪॥
naanak bhagat sohan dar saachai saachay kay vaapaaree. ||4||
O’ Nanak, the devotees look beautiful in God’s presence; they are the merchants of the eternal God’s Name. ||4||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ (ਆਪਣੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚ) ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਵਣਜ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੪॥
ਭੂਖ ਪਿਆਸੋ ਆਥਿ ਕਿਉ ਦਰਿ ਜਾਇਸਾ ਜੀਉ ॥
bhookh pi-aaso aath ki-o dar jaa-isaa jee-o.
I am hungry and thirsty for the worldly riches; how can I go in God’s presence?
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੀ ਭੁੱਖ ਅਤੇ ਤ੍ਰੇਹ ਹੈ। ਮੈਂ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ?
