ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਜਗੁ ਦੁਖੀਆ ਫਿਰੈ ਮਨਮੁਖਾ ਨੋ ਗਈ ਖਾਇ ॥
bin sabdai jag dukhee-aa firai manmukhaa no ga-ee khaa-ay.
Without the the Guru’s word, the world keeps wandering in pain due to its love for maya, which has consumed the self-willed people.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜਗਤ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ) ਦੁਖੀ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਗ੍ਰਸੀ ਰੱਖਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਸਬਦੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਸਬਦੇ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੪॥
sabday naam Dhi-aa-ee-ai sabday sach samaa-ay. ||4||
Meditation on Naam can be done only through the Guru’s word, through the Shabad one can remain merged in the eternal God.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿ ਸਕੀਦਾ ਹੈ
ਮਾਇਆ ਭੂਲੇ ਸਿਧ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਨ ਲਗੈ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
maa-i-aa bhoolay siDh fireh samaaDh na lagai subhaa-ay.
The Siddhas (Men of miracle) are lost in the pursuit of Maya, and they cannot concentrate on devotional worship.
ਕਰਾਮਾਤੀ ਬੰਦੇ, ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਹਿਕਾਏ ਹੋਏ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਅਤੇ ਸ਼੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਿਰਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜੁੜਦੀ।
ਤੀਨੇ ਲੋਅ ਵਿਆਪਤ ਹੈ ਅਧਿਕ ਰਹੀ ਲਪਟਾਇ ॥
teenay lo-a vi-aapat hai aDhik rahee laptaa-ay.
The obsession for Maya, pervades all the three worlds with its illusion, and it has entangled them completely.
ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਭਵਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਗ਼ਲਬਾ ਪਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ, (ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ) ਬਹੁਤ ਚੰਬੜੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਾ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥੫॥
bin gur mukat na paa-ee-ai naa dubiDhaa maa-i-aa jaa-ay. ||5||
Without the teachings of the Guru, liberation from maya is not attained, and the duality caused by Maya does not go away.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਤੋਂ ਖਲਾਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦੀ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਵਿਤਕਰਾ ਭੀ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ
ਮਾਇਆ ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਆਖੀਐ ਕਿਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
maa-i-aa kis no aakhee-ai ki-aa maa-i-aa karam kamaa-ay.
What is called Maya? What does Maya do to the minds of human beings?
ਮਾਇਆ ਕਿਸ ਚੀਜ਼ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੈ? ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਕੀਹ ਸਰੂਪ ਹੈ? ਜੀਵਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇਹੜੇ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ?
ਦੁਖਿ ਸੁਖਿ ਏਹੁ ਜੀਉ ਬਧੁ ਹੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
dukh sukh ayhu jee-o baDh hai ha-umai karam kamaa-ay.
Under the influence of maya the mortals are bound by pleasure and pain; they do their deeds in egotism.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਹੇਠ ਇਹ ਜੀਵ ਦੁੱਖ ਤੇ ਸੁਖ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਝਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ’ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਨਾ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਸਾਰੇ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਚੂਕਈ ਨਾ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੬॥
bin sabdai bharam na chook-ee naa vichahu ha-umai jaa-ay. ||6||
Without the Guru’s word, doubt is not dispelled, and egotism is not eliminated from within.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੀਵ ਦੀ ਇਹ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਮੁੱਕਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ, ਨਾਹ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਮੈਂ-ਮੇਰੀ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਨਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ l
ਬਿਨੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥
bin pareetee bhagat na hova-ee bin sabdai thaa-ay na paa-ay.
Without love, there is no devotional worship. Without the Guru’s word, no one finds acceptance at God’s court.
ਪਿਆਰ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਭਗਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਕਬੂਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਦਾ।
ਸਬਦੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੀਐ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
sabday ha-umai maaree-ai maa-i-aa kaa bharam jaa-ay.
Through the Guru’s teaching, egotism is subdued, and the illusion of Maya is dispelled.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ, ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਨਾ ਤੋਂ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਈ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥੭॥
naam padaarath paa-ee-ai gurmukh sahj subhaa-ay. ||7||
Through the Guru’s teachings one obtains the Treasure of the Naam with intuitive ease.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਕੀਮਤੀ ਪਦਾਰਥ) ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿਚ ਸਮਾਈ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਗੁਣ ਨ ਜਾਪਨੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਣ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
bin gur gun na jaapnee bin gun bhagat na ho-ay.
Without the Guru’s teachings, virtues of higher spiritual life are not revealed, and without virtues, God’s worship cannot be performed.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉੱਚੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਦਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ, ਤੇ, ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਸਹਜਿ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਇ ॥
bhagat vachhal har man vasi-aa sahj mili-aa parabh so-ay.
The lover of devotional worship, God dwells in the minds of the mortals and they meet that God with intuitive ease.
ਭਗਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ (ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ) ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆਂ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦੇ ਹਰਿ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਕਰਮਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੮॥੪॥੨੧॥
naanak sabday har salaahee-ai karam paraapat ho-ay. ||8||4||21||
O’ Nanak, only through the Guru’s word can God be praised, but this gift (opportunity) is obtained only by His grace.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਇਹ ਦਾਤਿ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ

Siree Raag, by the third Guru:
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਮੇਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਕੀਨਾ ਆਪੇ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ॥
maa-i-aa moh mayrai parabh keenaa aapay bharam bhulaa-ay.
It is my God who has created the attachment to Maya, and He Himself leads the mortals into this illusion.
ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਹਿ ਨਹੀ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥
manmukh karam karahi nahee boojheh birthaa janam gavaa-ay.
Self-conceited people perform prescribed religious rituals, but they do not understand the righteous way of life and waste away their life in vain.
ਆਪ-ਹੁਦਰੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਿੱਥੇ ਹੋਏ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਇਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦੇ ਕਿ ਅਸੀਂ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਏ ਹੋਏ ਹਾਂ। ਉਹ ਆਪਣਾ ਜਨਮ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਗਵਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ l
ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਇਸੁ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਕਰਮਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਏ ॥੧॥
gurbaanee is jag meh chaanan karam vasai man aa-ay. ||1||
The Guru’s word is the source of Divine knowledge in this world; by His Grace, it comes to abide within the mind.
ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਇਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਈਸ਼ਵਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਹੈ! ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਹਿਮਤ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਇਹ ਆ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਟਿਕ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਮਨ ਰੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
man ray naam japahu sukh ho-ay.
O’ my mind, meditate on God’s Name with loving devotion, and obtain peace.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ, (ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ) ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਸਹਜਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur pooraa salaahee-ai sahj milai parabh so-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Praising the Perfect Guru, you shall intuitively realize that God.
ਪੂਰਨ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ, ਉਹ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸੁਖੈਨ ਹੀ ਆਦਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਭਰਮੁ ਗਇਆ ਭਉ ਭਾਗਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਣੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ॥
bharam ga-i-aa bha-o bhaagi-aa har charnee chit laa-ay.
By concentrating the mind on God’s Name, illusion and fear flee away.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਚਿੱਤ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ (ਮਨ ਦੀ) ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, (ਹਰੇਕ ਕਿਸਮ ਦਾ) ਡਰ ਨੱਸ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥
gurmukh sabad kamaa-ee-ai har vasai man aa-ay.
By leading one’s life according to the Guru’s teachings, God comes to dwell in the heart.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਜੀਵਨ ਬਿਤਾਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਆ ਕੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਟਿਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਘਰਿ ਮਹਲਿ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਖਾਇ ॥੨॥
ghar mahal sach samaa-ee-ai jamkaal na sakai khaa-ay. ||2||
A person is thus merged in the Truth, he remains spiritually alive, the fear of death cannot devour him.
ਆਦਮੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਵੈ-ਸਰੂਪ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਨਿਗਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਨਾਮਾ ਛੀਬਾ ਕਬੀਰੁ ਜੋੁਲਾਹਾ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
naamaa chheebaa kabeer jolaahaa pooray gur tay gat paa-ee.
Nam Dev the tailor, and Kabeer the weaver, obtained salvation through the teachings from the Perfect Guru.
ਨਾਮ ਦੇਵ ਛੀਬੇ ਅਤੇ ਕਬੀਰ ਜੁਲਾਹੇ ਨੇ ਪੂਰਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲਈ।
ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਕੇ ਬੇਤੇ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਣਹਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਤਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥
barahm kay baytay sabad pachhaaneh ha-umai jaat gavaa-ee.
These knowers of God understood the divine word, and they completely rooted out their ego and complex due to their lower social status (from their minds).
ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਬਣ ਗਏ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ ਲਈ, (ਤੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਹਉਮੈ ਤੇ ਜਾਤੀ ਦਾ ਬੀ ਨਾਸ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ l
ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਮੇਟੈ ਭਾਈ ॥੩॥
sur nar tin kee banee gaavahi ko-ay na maytai bhaa-ee. ||3||
O’ brother, angels and human beings sing their hymns and no one can erase their name (they have become immortal)
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਹੁਣ ਦੇਵਤੇ ਤੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਗਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਕੋਈ ਬੰਦਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲੀ ਹੋਈ ਇਸ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਟਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ l
ਦੈਤ ਪੁਤੁ ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੰਜਮ ਨ ਪੜੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
dait put karam Dharam kichh sanjam na parhai doojaa bhaa-o na jaanai.
The demon’s son Prahlad refused to perform religious rituals or ceremonies, or practice austerity or self-discipline, and did not practice duality.
(ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦ), ਰਾਖਸ਼ ਦਾ ਪੁੱਤ੍ਰ, ਮਜ਼ਹਬੀ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਤਪੱਸਿਆਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਪੜ੍ਹਦਾ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਦਵੈਤ-ਭਾਵ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਜਾਣਦਾ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟਿਐ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਆ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥
satgur bhayti-ai nirmal ho-aa an-din naam vakhaanai.
Upon meeting with the True Guru, he became immaculate and always meditated on the Name of God with love and devotion.
ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਣ (ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ) ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ (ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲਾ) ਹੋ ਗਿਆ, ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣ ਲੱਗ ਪਿਆ।
ਏਕੋ ਪੜੈ ਏਕੋ ਨਾਉ ਬੂਝੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ॥੪॥
ayko parhai ayko naa-o boojhai doojaa avar na jaanai. ||4||
He read about the praises of only the One and recognized only the One Name of God and none other.
ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਪੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਸੀ, ਇਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਸੀ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਰਗਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਜਾਣਦਾ
ਖਟੁ ਦਰਸਨ ਜੋਗੀ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ॥
khat darsan jogee sani-aasee bin gur bharam bhulaa-ay.
Without the guidance of the Guru, even the followers of six Shastras, yogis and recluses remain lost in illusion.
ਜੋਗੀ, ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਛੇ ਭੇਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਾਧ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਤਾ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
satgur sayveh taa gat mit paavahi har jee-o man vasaa-ay.
Only by following the Guru’s teachings and enshrining God’s Name in their mind can they achieve higher spiritual state and righteous way of life.
ਕੇਵਲ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਕੇ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾ ਕੇ ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਤੇ ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਸਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣੁ ਰਹਾਏ ॥੫॥
sachee banee si-o chit laage aavan jaan rahaa-ay. ||5||
When they focus their consciousness on the divine word, their rounds of birth and death come to an end.
ਸੱਚੀ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਨਾਲ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਜੁੜ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਆਉਣਾ ਤੇ ਜਾਣਾ ਮੁਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਵਾਦੁ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ॥
pandit parh parh vaad vakaaneh bin gur bharam bhulaa-ay.
The Pandits, read and argue and stir up controversies, but without the Guru, they are deluded by doubt.
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਨਿਰੀ ਚਰਚਾ ਹੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਭੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਲਖ ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਫੇਰੁ ਪਇਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਏ ॥
lakh cha-oraaseeh fayr pa-i-aa bin sabdai mukat na paa-ay.
They wander around the cycle of millions reincarnations; without the Guru’s word they do not attain liberation.
ਉਹ ਚੁਰਾਸੀ ਨੱਖ ਜੂਨੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਗੇਡੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੋਖਸ਼ ਦੀ ਪਰਾਪਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ।
ਜਾ ਨਾਉ ਚੇਤੈ ਤਾ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਏ ਜਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥੬॥
jaa naa-o chi tai taa gat paa-ay jaa satgur mayl milaa-ay. ||6||
But when they remember the Name, then they attain the state of salvation, when the True Guru unites them in Union.
ਜਦ ਉਹ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਅਰਾਧਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਜਦ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤਦ ਉਹ ਕਲਿਆਣ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਉਪਜੈ ਜਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੁਭਾਏ ॥
satsangat meh naam har upjai jaa satgur milai subhaa-ay.
When the true Guru unites one in his sublime love, than by remaining in his saintly company, devotion to God’s Name wells up in that person’s mind.
ਜਦੋਂ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ) ਪਿਆਰ ਨਾਲ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਸਤਸੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪਰਗਟ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
