ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥੪॥੧॥
naanak naam milai man maani-aa. ||4||1||
O’ Nanak, he receives Naam, his mind becomes convinced about God. ||4||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਸਦਾ ਲਈ) ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿਚ ਪਤੀਜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੧॥

Raag Dhanasri, Third Guru:
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਅਤਿ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
har naam Dhan nirmal at apaaraa.
God’s Name is the most immaculate and infinite wealth.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਧਨ ਹੈ, ਕਦੇ ਨਾਹ ਮੁੱਕਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਧਨ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਭਰੇ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥
gur kai sabad bharay bhandaaraa.
Through the Guru’s word, one’s mind becomes full with this wealth.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ (ਜੁੜਿਆਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਇਸ ਧਨ ਦੇ) ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਭਰ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਮ ਧਨ ਬਿਨੁ ਹੋਰ ਸਭ ਬਿਖੁ ਜਾਣੁ ॥
naam Dhan bin hor sabh bikh jaan.
O’ my friend, except God’s Name, consider all other wealth as nothing but poison for the spiritual life.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਾਲਾ ਧਨ) ਸਾਰਾ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਸਮਝ (ਜੋ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਮੁਕਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ)।
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਜਲੈ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥੧॥
maa-i-aa mohi jalai abhimaan. ||1||
Maya (the worldly riches and power) makes a person arrogant and he keeps agonizing in the love for it. ||1||
ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਾਲਾ ਧਨ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਇਸ ਧਨ ਨੂੰ ਇਕੱਠਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਸੜਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
gurmukh har ras chaakhai ko-ay.
Only a very rare Guru’s follower tastes this elixir of God’s Name,
ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ ਚੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਤਿਸੁ ਸਦਾ ਅਨੰਦੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
tis sadaa anand hovai din raatee poorai bhaag paraapat ho-ay. rahaa-o.
which is received only through perfect good destiny; such a person enjoys divine bliss day and night. ||Pause||
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਇਹ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਪੂਰੀ ਕਿਸਮਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥ਰਹਾਉ॥
ਸਬਦੁ ਦੀਪਕੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਤਿਹੁ ਲੋਇ ॥
sabad deepak vartai tihu lo-ay.
The Guru’s divine word is like a lamp, which is pervading and illuminating the entire universe.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਦੀਵਾ (ਹੈ, ਜੋ) ਸਾਰੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਚਾਨਣ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜੋ ਚਾਖੈ ਸੋ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
jo chaakhai so nirmal ho-ay.
One who tastes (reflects on it), becomes immaculate.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਚੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਲੁ ਧੋਇ ॥
nirmal naam ha-umai mal Dho-ay.
One washes off the dirt of ego from within by attuning to the immaculate Naam.
ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ (ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਹਉਮੈ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਧੋ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਚੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥
saachee bhagat sadaa sukh ho-ay. ||2||
True devotional worship brings lasting celestial peace. ||2||.
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਸਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖਿਆ ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਜਨੁ ਲੋਗੁ ॥
jin har ras chaakhi-aa so har jan log.
He, who tasted the elixir of God’s Name, became His true devotee.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਚੱਖ ਲਿਆ, ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਦਾਸ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ।
ਤਿਸੁ ਸਦਾ ਹਰਖੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਦੇ ਸੋਗੁ ॥
tis sadaa harakh naahee kaday sog.
Such a person is always blissful and is never afflicted with sorrow.
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਗ਼ਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਿਆਪਦਾ।
ਆਪਿ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਅਵਰਾ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਕਰਾਵੈ ॥
aap mukat avraa mukat karaavai.
He himself is liberated from vices and liberates others as well.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪ (ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਬਚਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੈ ਹਰਿ ਤੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੩॥
har naam japai har tay sukh paavai. ||3||
He meditates on God’s Name and attains peace through it. ||3||.
ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਸੁਖ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਭ ਮੁਈ ਬਿਲਲਾਇ ॥
bin satgur sabh mu-ee billaa-ay.
Without the true Guru’s teachings, people become spiritually dead and keep wailing in misery.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਾਰੀ ਲੋਕਾਈ ਦੁੱਖੀ ਹੋ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਸਹੇੜ ਲੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਦਾਝਹਿ ਸਾਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥
an-din daajheh saat na paa-ay.
They always agonize in the ferocious worldly desires and never find any tranquility.
ਉਹ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਸੜਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।ਅਤੇ ਉਹਨਾ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਹਾਸਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਭੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਬੁਝਾਏ ॥
satgur milai sabh tarisan bujhaa-ay.
If the true Guru meets someone, then he quenches his fierce desires of worldly riches and power.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਾਰੀ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਤ੍ਰੇਹ ਮਿਟਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੪॥੨॥
naanak naam saaNt sukh paa-ay. ||4||2||
O’ Nanak, that person attains peace and tranquillity by attuning to Naam. |4||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਤੇ ਆਨੰਦ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੨॥

Raag Dhanasri, Third Guru:
ਸਦਾ ਧਨੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲੇ ॥
sadaa Dhan antar naam samaalay.
Always preserve the wealth of Naam deep within,
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਨਾਮ ਧਨ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਸਾਂਭ ਕੇ ਰੱਖ,
ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਜਿਨਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲੇ ॥
jee-a jant jineh partipaalay.
whish cherishes and nurtures all beings and creatures.
ਜੋ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਲਦਾ-ਪੋਸਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਪਾਏ ॥
mukat padaarath tin ka-o paa-ay.
They alone receive the wealth of Naam, which brings liberation from vices,
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਕਰਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥੧॥
har kai naam ratay liv laa-ay. ||1||
who remain imbued with and attuned to God’s Name. ||1||.
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ (-ਰੰਗ) ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥
ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਨੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
gur sayvaa tay har naam Dhan paavai.
One receives the wealth of God’s Name by following the Guru’s teachings.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ (ਦੱਸੀ) ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ (ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵੈ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
antar pargaas har naam Dhi-aavai. rahaa-o.
One who meditates on God’s Name, becomes spiritually enlightened. ||Pause||.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ) ਸੂਝ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਰਹਾਉ॥
ਇਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਗੂੜਾ ਧਨ ਪਿਰ ਹੋਇ ॥
ih har rang goorhaa Dhan pir ho-ay.
Only that soul-bride gets imbued with the deep love of God,
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ (ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ) ਦਾ ਇਹ ਗੂੜ੍ਹਾ ਰੰਗ ਉਸ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ਰਾਵੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਇ ॥
saaNt seegaar raavay parabh so-ay.
who embellishes herself with spiritual peace and enjoys the company of Husband-God.
ਜੇਹੜੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਗਹਣਾ ਬਣਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਮੇਲ ਦਾ ਅਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਪਾਏ ॥
ha-umai vich parabh ko-ay na paa-ay.
No one can realize God through egotism.
ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ (ਰਹਿ ਕੇ) ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਜੀਵ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਮੂਲਹੁ ਭੁਲਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥੨॥
moolhu bhulaa janam gavaa-ay. ||2||
One who forgets God, the source of life wastes his life in vain. ||2||
ਆਪਣੇ ਜਿੰਦ-ਦਾਤੇ ਤੋਂ ਭੁੱਲਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਗਵਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸਾਤਿ ਸਹਜ ਸੁਖੁ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
gur tay saat sahj sukh banee.
Tranquility, celestial peace and poise is attained from the divine words of the Guru.
ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ (ਮਿਲੀ) ਬਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਆਤਮਕ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸੇਵਾ ਸਾਚੀ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥
sayvaa saachee naam samaanee.
One merges in Naam through the devotional worship performed by following the Guru’s teachings.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਸੇਵਾਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨਤਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਸਦਾ ਧਿਆਏ ॥
sabad milai pareetam sadaa Dhi-aa-ay.
The person who remains attuned to the Guru’s word, always meditates on the beloved God;
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ;
ਸਾਚ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਪਾਏ ॥੩॥
saach naam vadi-aa-ee paa-ay. ||3||
he receives glory by remaining attuned to the eternal God’s Name. ||3||
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਕੇ (ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ) ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਖੱਟਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਸੋਇ ॥
aapay kartaa jug jug so-ay.
The Creator has been existing and pervading through all the ages.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਹਰੇਕ ਜੁਗ ਵਿਚ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਮੌਜੂਦ ਚਲਿਆ ਆ ਰਿਹਾ) ਹੈ।v
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਮੇਲਾਵਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
nadar karay maylaavaa ho-ay.
But union with Him takes place only when He casts His glance of grace.
ਉਹ (ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉੱਤੇ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ) ਨਿਗਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ) ਮਿਲਾਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
gurbaanee tay har man vasaa-ay.
one should enshrine God in one’s mind through the Guru’s divine word.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥੪॥੩॥
naanak saach ratay parabh aap milaa-ay. ||4||3||
O’ Nanak, God unites with Himself those who are imbued with Naam. ||4||3||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ!ਜੋ ਸੱਚ ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਅਭੇਦ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੩॥

ਜਗੁ ਮੈਲਾ ਮੈਲੋ ਹੋਇ ਜਾਇ ॥ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ਦੂਜੈ ਲੋਭਾਇ ॥
jag mailaa mailo ho-ay jaa-ay. aavai jaa-ay doojai lobhaa-ay.
In the love for Maya (worldly attachments), people are filled with sins; they are becoming more and more sinful and keep going in the cycle of birth and death.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਜਗਤ ਮੈਲੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ,ਤੇਹੋਰਹੋਰ ਵਧੀਕ ਮੈਲੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਬਣਦਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਸਭ ਪਰਜ ਵਿਗੋਈ ॥
doojai bhaa-ay sabh paraj vigo-ee.
This love of duality has ruined the entire world.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਸਾਰੀ ਲੁਕਾਈ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਚੋਟਾ ਖਾਇ ਅਪੁਨੀ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥੧॥
manmukh chotaa khaa-ay apunee pat kho-ee. ||1||
A self-willed person suffers punishment and forfeits his honor. ||1||
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀਆਂ) ਸੱਟਾਂ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ, ਆਪਣੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਗਵਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਜਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
gur sayvaa tay jan nirmal ho-ay.
By following the Guru’s teachings, one becomes immaculate,
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ (ਦੱਸੀ ਹੋਈ) ਸੇਵਾ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਪਤਿ ਊਤਮ ਹੋਇ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
antar naam vasai pat ootam ho-ay. rahaa-o.
realizes Naam dwelling within and his reputation becomes exalted. ||Pause||
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਉੱਚੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ ਰਹਾਉ॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਉਬਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥
gurmukh ubray har sarnaa-ee.
By seeking God’s refuge, the Guru’s followers are saved from being entrapped inthe love for Maya, the worldly riches and power.
!ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚ ਨਿਕਲਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਈ ॥
raam naam raatay bhagat darirhaa-ee.
Attuned to God’s Name, they commit themselves to devotional worship.
ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਮਗਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪੱਕੀ ਟਿਕਾਈ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਜਨੁ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਪਾਏ ॥
bhagat karay jan vadi-aa-ee paa-ay.
One who performs devotional worship of God, attains glory.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ) ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਖੱਟਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੁਖ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥੨॥
saach ratay sukh sahj samaa-ay. ||2||
Those who are imbued with the eternal God’s love, remain delighted in celestial peace and poise. ||2||
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨॥
ਸਾਚੇ ਕਾ ਗਾਹਕੁ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਕੋ ਜਾਣੁ ॥
saachay kaa gaahak virlaa ko jaan.
Understand that only a rare person is the seeker of the eternal God.
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦਾ ਚਾਹਵਾਨ ਕਿਸੇ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਸਮਝੋ।
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥
gur kai sabad aap pachhaan.
Through the Guru’s word, he comes to understand himself.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਚੀ ਰਾਸਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ॥
saachee raas saachaa vaapaar.
He enshrines the wealth of God’s Name; he remains in the trade of meditation on God’s Name.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਪੂੰਜੀਸਾਂਭ ਕੇ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ,ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਵਪਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸੋ ਧੰਨੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਨਾਮਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥੩॥
so Dhan purakh jis naam pi-aar. ||3||
Blessed is that person, who loves Naam. ||3||
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਤਿਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਇਕਿ ਸਚਿ ਲਾਏ ॥
tin parabh saachai ik sach laa-ay.
That eternal God has attached some people to His eternal Name,
ਉਸ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਕਈ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ,
ਊਤਮ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥
ootam banee sabad sunaa-ay.
to them He recites the most sublime words of the Guru.
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਸੁਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਬਣਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
