ੴ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik-oNkaar sat naam kartaa purakh nirbha-o nirvair akaal moorat ajoonee saibhaN gur parsaad.
There is only one God whose Name is of eternal existence. He is the creator of the universe, all-pervading, without fear, without enmity, independent of time, beyond the cycle of birth and death and self revealed. He is realized by the Guru’s grace.
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ‘ਹੋਂਦ ਵਾਲਾ’ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦਾ ਰਚਨਹਾਰ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਸਭ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ, ਭੈ ਤੋਂ ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ, ਵੈਰ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੂਪ ਕਾਲ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ, (ਭਾਵ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਨਾਸ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ), ਜੋ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਤੋਂ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜੀਉ ਡਰਤੁ ਹੈ ਆਪਣਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਉ ਕਰੀ ਪੁਕਾਰ ॥
jee-o darat hai aapnaa kai si-o karee pukaar.
My soul is afraid of sufferings in the world; to whom may I beg for help?
ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਭੈ-ਭੀਤ ਹੋਈ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ, ਕੀਹਦੇ ਕੋਲ ਮੈਂ ਮਿੰਨਤਾਂ ਕਰਾਂ?
ਦੂਖ ਵਿਸਾਰਣੁ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ॥੧॥
dookh visaaran sayvi-aa sadaa sadaa daataar. ||1||
I lovingly meditate on God, who is the dispeller of sorrows and is always a gracious benefactor. ||1||
ਮੈਂ ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ਾਂ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਨੀਤ ਨਵਾ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
saahib mayraa neet navaa sadaa sadaa daataar. ||1|| rahaa-o.
My Master-God keeps on giving ever and forever and it feels, as if everyday He is the new benefactor. ||1||Pause||
ਮੇਰਾ ਮਾਲਿਕ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ਾਂ ਤਾਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਨਿੱਤ ਇਉਂ ਹੈ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਵਾਰੀ ਹੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਕਰਨ ਲੱਗਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਅੰਤਿ ਛਡਾਏ ਸੋਇ ॥
an-din saahib sayvee-ai ant chhadaa-ay so-ay.
We should always meditate on God, because it is He who would save us in the end.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੇ! ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਉਸ ਮਾਲਿਕ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ (ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਆਖ਼ਰ ਉਹੀ ਬਚਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਾਮਣੀ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥
sun sun mayree kaamnee paar utaaraa ho-ay. ||2||
Yes, listen carefully O’ my soul, it is by meditating on Him, that we are able to cross over the dreadful worldly ocean of sufferings. ||2||
ਹੇ ਜਿੰਦੇ!ਧਿਆਨ ਨਾਲ ਸੁਣ (ਉਸ ਮਾਲਿਕ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਸਕੀਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਦਇਆਲ ਤੇਰੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਤਰਾ ॥
da-i-aal tayrai naam taraa.
O’ merciful God, it is only by meditating on Your Name that I can swim across the dreadful worldly ocean of miseries.
ਹੇ ਦਿਆਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ, ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ ਦੇਹ, ਤਾ ਕਿ) ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮੈਂ (ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਇਸ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਸਕਾਂ।
ਸਦ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੈ ਜਾਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sad kurbaanai jaa-o. ||1|| rahaa-o.
I am forever dedicated to You. ||1||Pause||
ਮੈਂ ਤੈਥੋਂ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸਰਬੰ ਸਾਚਾ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥
sarbaN saachaa ayk hai doojaa naahee ko-ay.
In the universe, it is only God who is eternal; there is none other at all.
ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਥਾਈਂ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਤਾ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਸੋ ਕਰੇ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ॥੩॥
taa kee sayvaa so karay jaa ka-o nadar karay. ||3||
Only that person on whom He casts His glance of grace performs His devotional worship. ||3||
ਜਿਸ ਜੀਵ ਉਤੇ ਉਹ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਤੁਧੁ ਬਾਝੁ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਕੇਵ ਰਹਾ ॥
tuDh baajh pi-aaray kayv rahaa.
O’ Beloved God, how could I even spiritually survive without remembering You?
ਹੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਤੇਰੀ ਯਾਦ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੈਂ ਵਿਆਕੁਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਸਾ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦੇਹਿ ਜਿਤੁ ਨਾਮਿ ਤੇਰੇ ਲਾਗਿ ਰਹਾਂ ॥
saa vadi-aa-ee deh jit naam tayray laag rahaaN.
Please bless me with such a great gift, by virtue of which I may always remain attuned to Your Name.
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਉਹ ਵੱਡੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਦੇਹ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਦਕਾ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਰਹਾਂ।
ਦੂਜਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ਜਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਜਾਇ ਕਹਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
doojaa naahee ko-ay jis aagai pi-aaray jaa-ay kahaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
O’ dear God, there is none other to whom I can go and pray. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ! ਤੈਥੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਐਸਾ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਪਾਸ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਇਹ ਅਰਜ਼ੋਈ ਕਰ ਸਕਾਂ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸੇਵੀ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਆਪਣਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਚੰਉ ਕੋਇ ॥
sayvee saahib aapnaa avar na jaachaN-o ko-ay.
I adore and worship only my Master-God and I don’t beg from anybody else.
ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਾਲਿਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਇਹ ਮੰਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੰਗਦਾ।
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਦਾਸੁ ਹੈ ਬਿੰਦ ਬਿੰਦ ਚੁਖ ਚੁਖ ਹੋਇ ॥੪॥
naanak taa kaa daas hai bind bind chukh chukh ho-ay. ||4||
Nanak is His humble servant and each and every minute he is totally dedicated to Him. ||4||
ਨਾਨਕ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਉਸ (ਮਾਲਿਕ) ਦਾ ਹੀ ਸੇਵਕ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਮਾਲਿਕ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਖਿਨ ਖਿਨ ਸਦਕੇ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਸਾਹਿਬ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਬਿੰਦ ਬਿੰਦ ਚੁਖ ਚੁਖ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥੪॥੧॥
saahib tayray naam vitahu bind bind chukh chukh ho-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o. ||4||1||
O’ my Master-God, yes, I am completely dedicated to You each and every minute of my life. ||1||Pause||4||1||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਾਲਿਕ! ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਖਿਨ ਖਿਨ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥੪॥੧॥

Raag Dhanasri, First Guru:
ਹਮ ਆਦਮੀ ਹਾਂ ਇਕ ਦਮੀ ਮੁਹਲਤਿ ਮੁਹਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ॥
ham aadmee haaN ik damee muhlat muhat na jaanaa.
We, the human beings live one breath at a time and don’t know how many more breaths we have.
ਅਸੀਂ ਆਦਮੀ ਇਕ ਦਮ ਦੇ ਹੀ ਮਾਲਕ ਹਾਂਸਾਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ ਮਿਆਦ ਦਾ ਪਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬਿਨਵੈ ਤਿਸੈ ਸਰੇਵਹੁ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਜੀਅ ਪਰਾਣਾ ॥੧॥
naanak binvai tisai sarayvhu jaa kay jee-a paraanaa. ||1||
Nanak prays, remember the One to whom belongs this soul and breaths. ||1||
ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ- ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰੋ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਜਿੰਦ ਤੇ ਸੁਆਸ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ ॥੧॥
ਅੰਧੇ ਜੀਵਨਾ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ਦੇਖਿ ਕੇਤੇ ਕੇ ਦਿਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
anDhay jeevnaa veechaar daykh kaytay kay dinaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
O’ ignorant human being, think and see for yourself; how many more days you are going to live? ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ) ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ ਜੀਵ! (ਅੱਖਾਂ ਖੋਲ੍ਹ ਕੇ) ਵੇਖ, ਸੋਚ ਸਮਝ, ਇਥੇ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਥੋੜੇ ਹੀ ਦਿਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸਾਸੁ ਮਾਸੁ ਸਭੁ ਜੀਉ ਤੁਮਾਰਾ ਤੂ ਮੈ ਖਰਾ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥
saas maas sabh jee-o tumaaraa too mai kharaa pi-aaraa.
O’ God, this body, breaths and soul belongs to You; You are truly dear to me.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!ਇਹ ਸੁਆਸ ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਇਹ ਜਿੰਦ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੀ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਤੂੰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਾਇਰੁ ਏਵ ਕਹਤੁ ਹੈ ਸਚੇ ਪਰਵਦਗਾਰਾ ॥੨॥
naanak saa-ir ayv kahat hai sachay parvadgaaraa. ||2||
O’ true cherisher of Your beings, this is what poet Nanak prays. ||2||
ਹੇ ਸਦਾ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਾਲਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰਾ ਢਾਢੀ ਨਾਨਕ (ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ) ਇਹ ਹੀ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਜੇ ਤੂ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਦੇਹੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਹਿਬਾ ਕਿਆ ਕੋ ਕਢੈ ਗਹਣਾ ॥
jay too kisai na dayhee mayray saahibaa ki-aa ko kadhai gahnaa.
O’ my Master-God, if You don’t give the gift of Your love to someone, then what could anyone pledge to You in exchange for this love?
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਾਲਿਕ!ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਦੀਦਾਤ ਨਾ ਦੇਵੇਂ ਤਾਂ ਕੋਈ ਕੀ ਗਹਿਣੇ ਰੱਖ ਕੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਲੈ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬਿਨਵੈ ਸੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਪੁਰਬਿ ਲਿਖੇ ਕਾ ਲਹਣਾ ॥੩॥
naanak binvai so kichh paa-ee-ai purab likhay kaa lahnaa. ||3||
Nanak prays, we receive only that which we are predestined to receive. ||3||
ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਉਹੀ ਕੁਝ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋਮੁੱਢ ਤੋਂ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣਾਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਨਾਮੁ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਕੀਆ ਕਪਟੀ ਕਪਟੁ ਕਮਾਣਾ ॥
naam khasam kaa chit na kee-aa kaptee kapat kamaanaa.
A deceitful person keeps practicing deceit and doesn’t remember God’s Name.
ਛਲੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤਾਂ ਛਲ ਹੀ ਕਮਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਸਾਂਦਾ।
ਜਮ ਦੁਆਰਿ ਜਾ ਪਕੜਿ ਚਲਾਇਆ ਤਾ ਚਲਦਾ ਪਛੁਤਾਣਾ ॥੪॥
jam du-aar jaa pakarh chalaa-i-aa taa chaldaa pachhutaanaa. ||4||
When he faces demon of death, then he regrets his actions. ||4||
ਅਖ਼ੀਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਜਦੋਂ ਫੜ ਕੇ ਜਮਰਾਜ ਦੇ ਬੂਹੇ ਵਲ ਧੱਕਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ (ਇਥੋਂ) ਤੁਰਨ ਵੇਲੇ ਹੱਥ ਮਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
