ਪਿਰ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਈ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
pir kee saar na jaan-ee doojai bhaa-ay pi-aar.
Being in love with the worldly wealth and riches, she does not understand the worth of her Husband-God.
ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ; ਉਹ ਪਤੀ ਦੀ ਕਦਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦੀ
ਸਾ ਕੁਸੁਧ ਸਾ ਕੁਲਖਣੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਰੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਕੁਨਾਰਿ ॥੨॥
saa kusuDh saa kulkhanee naanak naaree vich kunaar. ||2||
O’ Nanak, such a soul-bride is impure, characterless and most evil woman. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਇਹੋ ਜਹੀ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਮਨੋਂ ਖੋਟੀ ਤੇ ਭੈੜੇ ਲੱਛਣਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਨਾਰੀਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਭੈੜੀ ਨਾਰਿ (ਕਹਾਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ) ॥੨॥

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਅਪਣੀ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਬੋਲੀ ਬੈਣੀ ॥
har har apnee da-i-aa kar har bolee bainee.
O’ God, bestow mercy that I may utter the divine words of Your praises.
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਆਪਣੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ, ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਾਣੀ (ਭਾਵ, ਤੇਰਾ ਜੱਸ) ਉਚਾਰਾਂ,
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈ ਹਰਿ ਉਚਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਲੈਣੀ ॥
har naam Dhi-aa-ee har uchraa har laahaa lainee.
I may always meditate and utter God’s Name and earn the reward of remembering God.
ਹਰੀ-ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਾਂ, ਹਰੀ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਇਹੀ ਲਾਭ ਖੱਟਾਂ।
ਜੋ ਜਪਦੇ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਤਿਨ ਹਉ ਕੁਰਬੈਣੀ ॥
jo japday har har dinas raat tin ha-o kurbainee.
I am dedicated to those who always remember God with loving devotion.
ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਹਾਂ, ਜੋ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਹਰੀ-ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਅਰਾਧਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਜਨ ਦੇਖਾ ਨੈਣੀ ॥
jinaa satgur mayraa pi-aaraa araaDhi-aa tin jan daykhaa nainee.
May I behold with my eyes those devotees who deliberate on the teachings of my beloved true Guru.
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੈਂ ਅੱਖੀਂ ਵੇਖਾਂ ਜੋ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਹਉ ਵਾਰਿਆ ਅਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਕਉ ਜਿਨਿ ਮੇਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਸਜਣੁ ਮੇਲਿਆ ਸੈਣੀ ॥੨੪॥
ha-o vaari-aa apnay guroo ka-o jin mayraa har sajan mayli-aa sainee. ||24||
I am dedicated to my Guru, who has united me with my God, my friend and my relative. ||24||
ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਹਾਂ, ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਸੱਜਣ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਾਥੀ ਮਿਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ॥੨੪॥

Shalok, Fourth Guru:
ਹਰਿ ਦਾਸਨ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਦਾਸਨ ਕੋ ਮਿਤੁ ॥
har daasan si-o pareet hai har daasan ko mit.
God loves His devotees; God is the friend of His devotees.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੇਵਕਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੇਵਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ,
ਹਰਿ ਦਾਸਨ ਕੈ ਵਸਿ ਹੈ ਜਿਉ ਜੰਤੀ ਕੈ ਵਸਿ ਜੰਤੁ ॥
har daasan kai vas hai ji-o jantee kai vas jant.
God is under the control of His devotees who love Him, just as a musical instrument is under the control of the musician.
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਵਾਜਾ ਵਜੰਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੇ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜਿਵੇਂ ਚਾਹੇ ਵਜਾਏ) ਤਿਵੇਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੇਵਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਅਧੀਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਦਾਸ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇਦੇ ਕਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਸਿਉ ਨੇਹੁ ॥
har kay daas har Dhi-aa-iday kar pareetam si-o nayhu.
God’s devotees love their beloved God and remember Him with adoration.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਆਪਣੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਭ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਵਰਸੈ ਮੇਹੁ ॥
kirpaa kar kai sunhu parabh sabh jag meh varsai mayhu. v
O’ God, please bestow mercy and listen, let Your grace rain over the entire world.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸੁਣ, ਸਾਰੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ (ਨਾਮ ਦੀ) ਵਰਖਾ ਹੋਵੇ (ਇਸ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਕੇ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੇਵਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰਦਾ ਹੈ)।
ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਦਾਸਨ ਕੀ ਉਸਤਤਿ ਹੈ ਸਾ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
jo har daasan kee ustat hai saa har kee vadi-aa-ee.
The praise of God’s devotees, in reality is the glory of God.
ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਸੇਵਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹਰੀ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹੈ l
ਹਰਿ ਆਪਣੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਭਾਵਦੀ ਜਨ ਕਾ ਜੈਕਾਰੁ ਕਰਾਈ ॥
har aapnee vadi-aa-ee bhaavdee jan kaa jaikaar karaa-ee.
This kind of His own praise is pleasing to God, so He brings about acclamation of His devotee.
ਹਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਚੰਗੀ ਲੱਗਦੀ ਹੈ। (ਸੋ) ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਦੀ ਜੈ ਜੈਕਾਰ ਕਰਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਜਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਨੁ ਇਕ ਸਮਾਨਿ ॥
so har jan naam Dhi-aa-idaa har har jan ik samaan.
That person, who remembers God’s Name with adoration is a devotee of God; God and His devotee are alike.
ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਦਾਸ ਉਹ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹਰੀ ਤੇ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਸੇਵਕ ਇਕ-ਰੂਪ ਹਨ।
ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਦਾਸੁ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਪੈਜ ਰਖਹੁ ਭਗਵਾਨ ॥੧॥
jan naanak har kaa daas hai har paij rakhahu bhagvaan. ||1||
O’ God, Nanak is Your devotee, save his honor as well. ||1||
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਹੇ ਭਗਵਾਨ! ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇਰਾ ਸੇਵਕ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਸੇਵਕ ਦੀ ਭੀ ਲਾਜ ਰੱਖ ॥੧॥

Fourth Mehl:
ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਾਈ ਤਿਨਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਰਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
naanak pareet laa-ee tin saachai tis bin rahan na jaa-ee.
O’ Nanak, that eternal God has imbued me with His love, now I cannot spiritually survive without realizing Him.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਸ ਸੱਚੇ ਹਰੀ ਨੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ, ਹੁਣ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੀਵਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਰਸਨ ਰਸਾਈ ॥੨॥
satgur milai ta pooraa paa-ee-ai har ras rasan rasaa-ee. ||2||
Meeting the true Guru, one realizes the perfect God and the tongue enjoys the sublime elixir of God’s Name. ||2||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ ਤਾਂ ਪੂਰਾ ਹਰੀ ਲੱਭ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜੀਭ ਹਰੀ-ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਦ ਵਿਚ ਰਸ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੨॥

ਰੈਣਿ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਪਰਭਾਤਿ ਤੂਹੈ ਹੀ ਗਾਵਣਾ ॥
rain dinas parbhaat toohai hee gaavnaa.
O’ God, I sing Your praises day and night.
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਰਾਤ ਦਿਨੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਵੇਲੇ (ਭਾਵ, ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ) ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੀ ਜੱਸ ਗਾਵਦਾ ਹਾਂ,
ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਸਰਬਤ ਨਾਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਧਿਆਵਣਾ ॥
jee-a jant sarbat naa-o tayraa Dhi-aavanaa.
All beings and creatures meditate only on Your Name.
ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ ਜੰਤ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੀ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ;
ਤੂ ਦਾਤਾ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਦਿਤਾ ਖਾਵਣਾ ॥
too daataa daataar tayraa ditaa khaavnaa.
O’ God You are the benefactor and everyone consume what You give them,
ਤੂੰ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਦਾਤਾਰ ਹੈਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੀ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਪਾਪ ਗਵਾਵਣਾ ॥
bhagat janaa kai sang paap gavaavnaa.
and they eradicate their sins in the company of Your devotees.
ਤੇ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਾਪ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਦ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਵਣਾ ॥੨੫॥
jan naanak sad balihaarai bal bal jaavnaa. ||25||
O’ Nanak, dedicate yourself to those devotees forever. ||25||
ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਸਦਾ ਸਦਕੇ ਹੋ, ਸਦਕੇ ਹੋ ॥੨੫॥

Shalok, Fourth Gurul:
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਭਈ ਮਤਿ ਮਧਿਮ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਪਰਤੀਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
antar agi-aan bha-ee mat maDhim satgur kee parteet naahee.
Those who are spiritually ignorant and has no faith in the true Guru, their intellect becomes shallow.
ਜਿਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇਰਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਭਰੋਸਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਧਾਰਦੇ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਬੁੱਧੀ ਮੰਦ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਣੀ ਹੈ।
ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕਪਟੁ ਸਭੁ ਕਪਟੋ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਕਪਟੇ ਖਪਹਿ ਖਪਾਹੀ ॥
andar kapat sabh kapto kar jaanai kaptay khapeh khapaahee.
They have deceit within, and they see deception in all others; practicing deceit, such persons ruin themselves and others along with them.
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਧੋਖਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਛਲੀਏ ਸਮਝਦੇ ਹਨ; ਉਹ ਬੰਦੇ ਆਪ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੁਖੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ;
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਭਾਣਾ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਆਪਣੈ ਸੁਆਇ ਫਿਰਾਹੀ ॥
satgur kaa bhaanaa chit na aavai aapnai su-aa-ay firaa-ee.
The teachings of the true Guru doesn’t come to their minds, and they keep roaming around in pursuit of their selfish motives.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ (ਭਾਵ, ਭਾਣਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੰਨਦੇ) ਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਗ਼ਰਜ਼ ਦੇ ਪਿਛੇ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ;
ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਜੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਤਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਹੀ ॥੧॥
kirpaa karay jay aapnee taa naanak sabad samaahee. ||1||
O’ Nanak, if God bestows mercy, then they attune to the Guru’s word.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੇ ਹਰੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰੇ, ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥

Fourth Guru:
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਵਿਆਪੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਮਨੂਆ ਥਿਰੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥
manmukh maa-i-aa mohi vi-aapay doojai bhaa-ay manoo-aa thir naahi.
The self-willed persons are engrossed in emotional attachment to Maya; in the love of duality, their mind does not remain steady.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਗ੍ਰਸੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਨਮੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ ਥਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਟਿਕਦਾ।
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਲਤ ਰਹਹਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਖਪਹਿ ਖਪਾਹਿ ॥
an-din jalat raheh din raatee ha-umai khapeh khapaahi.
Everyday they keep suffering in their love for Maya, and in their ego they keep ruining themselves and others.
ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ) ਸੜਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਆਪ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੁਖੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਮਹਾ ਗੁਬਾਰਾ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਜਾਹਿ ॥
antar lobh mahaa gubaaraa tin kai nikat na ko-ee jaahi.
Within them is pitch-black darkness of greed; therefore no one goes near them.
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੋਭ-ਰੂਪ ਵੱਡਾ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਢੁਕਦਾ।
ਓਇ ਆਪਿ ਦੁਖੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਕਬਹੂ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥
o-ay aap dukhee sukh kabhoo na paavahi janam mareh mar jaahi.
They remain miserable by themselves, never find any peace and keep going through the rounds of birth and death.
ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਦੁਖੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਕਦੇ ਸੁਖੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੇ, ਸਦਾ ਜੰਮਣ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਬਖਸਿ ਲਏ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਜਿ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਨੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਹਿ ॥੨॥
naanak bakhas la-ay parabh saachaa je gur charnee chit laahi. ||2||
O’ Nanak, if they attune their minds to the Guru’s teachings, then the eternal God forgives them. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੇ ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਚਿੱਤ ਜੋੜਨ, ਤਾਂ ਸੱਚਾ ਹਰੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ ਲਏ ॥੨॥

ਸੰਤ ਭਗਤ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
sant bhagat parvaan jo parabh bhaa-i-aa.
Only those with whom God is pleased are the approved saints and devotees.
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਸੰਤ ਹਨ, ਭਗਤ ਹਨ ਉਹੀ ਕਬੂਲ ਹਨ।
ਸੇਈ ਬਿਚਖਣ ਜੰਤ ਜਿਨੀ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥
say-ee bichkhan jant jinee har Dhi-aa-i-aa.
Those who remember God with loving devotion are wise.
ਉਹੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਿਆਣੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਹਰੀ-ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਖਾਇਆ ॥
amrit naam niDhaan bhojan khaa-i-aa.
They consume the treasure of the ambrosial Naam as their spiritual sustenance,
ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ-ਰੂਪ ਭੋਜਨ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਧੂਰਿ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲਾਇਆ ॥
sant janaa kee Dhoor mastak laa-i-aa.
They engage themselves to the service of the true saints with such humility as if they are applying the dust of the feet of the saints to their foreheads.
ਤੇ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਚਰਨ-ਧੂੜ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਤੇ ਲਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
