Raag Sorath, Fifth Guru, Second Beat, two liners:
ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik-oNkaar satgur parsaad.
One eternal God, realized by the grace of the True Guru:
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਗਲ ਬਨਸਪਤਿ ਮਹਿ ਬੈਸੰਤਰੁ ਸਗਲ ਦੂਧ ਮਹਿ ਘੀਆ ॥
sagal banaspat meh baisantar sagal dooDh meh ghee-aa.
Just as fire is exists in all vegetation and butter in all types of milk,
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਸਭ ਬੂਟਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਅੱਗ (ਗੁਪਤ ਮੌਜੂਦ) ਹੈ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਹਰੇਕ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੇ ਦੁੱਧ ਵਿਚ ਘਿਉ (ਮੱਖਣ) ਗੁਪਤ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ,
ਊਚ ਨੀਚ ਮਹਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਮਾਧਉ ਜੀਆ ॥੧॥
ooch neech meh jot samaanee ghat ghat maaDha-o jee-aa. ||1||
similarly God’s light is pervading all beings whether of high or low social status, and He is present in the heart of all beings. ||1||
ਤਿਵੇਂ ਚੰਗੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਈ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹਰੇਕ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੈ, ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਸੰਤਹੁ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਹਿਓ ॥
santahu ghat ghat rahi-aa samaahi-o.
O’ saints, God is pervading each and every heart;
ਹੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹਰੇਕ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ।
ਪੂਰਨ ਪੂਰਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਸਰਬ ਮਹਿ ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਰਮਈਆ ਆਹਿਓ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
pooran poor rahi-o sarab meh jal thal rama-ee-aa aahi-o. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The perfect God is completely permeating all beings and He is pervading water as well as land. ||1||Pause||
ਉਹ ਪੂਰੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਰਾਮ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਹੈ ਧਰਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਗੁਣ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਵੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਓ ॥
gun niDhaan naanak jas gaavai satgur bharam chukaa-i-o.
Nanak sings the Praises of God, the treasure of virtues because the True Guru has dispelled his doubt.
ਨਾਨਕ (ਉਸ) ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦਾ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ (ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾ) ਭੁਲੇਖਾ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਰਬ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ਸਦਾ ਅਲੇਪਾ ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇਓ ॥੨॥੧॥੨੯॥
sarab nivaasee sadaa alaypaa sabh meh rahi-aa samaa-i-o. ||2||1||29||
The omnipresent God is permeating all beings, yet He always remains detached from all. ||2||1||29||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ (ਫਿਰ ਭੀ) ਸਦਾ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ) ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਹੈ, ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸਮਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥੧॥੨੯॥

ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਮਰਣਿ ਹੋਇ ਅਨੰਦਾ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਭੈ ਦੁਖੀ ॥
jaa kai simran ho-ay anandaa binsai janam maran bhai dukhee.
O’ brother, by meditating on God you can be blissful, your fear and pain of going through the cycle of birth and death can be destroyed,
ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਤੂੰ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ-ਭਰਿਆ ਜੀਵਨ ਜੀਊ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਡਰ ਤੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਚਾਰਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਨਵ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਭੁਖੀ ॥੧॥
chaar padaarath nav niDh paavahi bahur na tarisnaa bhukhee. ||1||
you will receive the four cardinal blessings (faith, wealth, procreation, salvation) and nine treasures of the world; you no longer will have yearning for Maya. ||1||
ਤੂੰ (ਧਰਮ ਅਰਥ ਕਾਮ ਮੋਖ) ਚਾਰੇ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਤੇ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਨੌ ਹੀ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਪਾ ਲਵੇਂਗਾ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰੇਹ ਭੁੱਖ ਫਿਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਿਆਪੇਗੀ ॥੧॥
ਜਾ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਲੈਤ ਤੂ ਸੁਖੀ ॥
jaa ko naam lait too sukhee.
By chanting God’s Name, you can be at peace,
ਜਿਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆਂ ਤੂੰ ਸੁਖੀ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈਂ,
ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਧਿਆਵਹੁ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕਉ ਮਨ ਤਨ ਜੀਅਰੇ ਮੁਖੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
saas saas Dhi-aavahu thaakur ka-o man tan jee-aray mukhee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
you should meditate on that God with each and every breath, with full concentration of your mind, body, heart, and tongue. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਜੀਵ! ਉਸ ਪਾਲਣਹਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨੋ ਤਨੋ ਮੂੰਹ ਨਾਲ ਹਰੇਕ ਸਾਹ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਕਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸਾਂਤਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਮਨ ਸੀਤਲ ਅਗਨਿ ਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਧੁਖੀ ॥
saaNt paavahi hoveh man seetal agan na antar Dhukhee.
By meditating on God, you would find peace, your mind would feel comforted, and the fire of worldly desires wouldn’t smolder within you.
ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ) ਤੂੰ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲਏਂਗਾ, ਤੇਰਾ ਚਿੱਤ ਠੰਢਾ-ਠਾਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਏਂਗਾ, ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਧੁਖੇਗੀ।
ਗੁਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣਿ ਰੁਖੀ ॥੨॥੨॥੩੦॥
gur naanak ka-o parabhoo dikhaa-i-aa jal thal taribhavan rukhee. ||2||2||30||
The Guru has revealed to Nanak, the presence of God in water, land and trees of all the worlds. ||2||2||30||
ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ (ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਨਾਨਕ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਧਰਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਰੁੱਖਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ (ਵੱਸਦਾ) ਵਿਖਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥੨॥੩੦॥

Raag Sorath, Fifth Guru:
ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਲੋਭ ਝੂਠ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਇਨ ਤੇ ਆਪਿ ਛਡਾਵਹੁ ॥
kaam kroDh lobh jhooth nindaa in tay aap chhadaavahu.
O’ God, please rescue me from the vices like lust, anger, greed, falsehood and slander.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਲੋਭ ਝੂਠ ਨਿੰਦਾ (ਆਦਿਕ) ਇਹਨਾਂ (ਸਾਰੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ) ਤੋਂ ਤੂੰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪ ਛੁਡਾ ਲੈ।
ਇਹ ਭੀਤਰ ਤੇ ਇਨ ਕਉ ਡਾਰਹੁ ਆਪਨ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਬੁਲਾਵਹੁ ॥੧॥
ih bheetar tay in ka-o daarahu aapan nikat bulaavhu. ||1||
Drive out these vices from within me and keep me imbued with Your love. ||1||
ਮੇਰੇ ਇਸ ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਇਹਨਾਂ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ) ਨੂੰ ਕੱਢ ਦੇ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖ ॥੧॥
ਅਪੁਨੀ ਬਿਧਿ ਆਪਿ ਜਨਾਵਹੁ ॥
apunee biDh aap janaavhu.
O’ God, You Yourself show me the way to meditate on You,
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਆਪਣੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਦੀ ਜਾਚ ਤੂੰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪ ਸਿਖਾ।
ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਮੰਗਲ ਗਾਵਹੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
har jan mangal gaavhu. ||1|| rahaa-o.
so that, I may sing Your praises in the company of Your devotees. ||1||Pause||
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਨਾ ਦੇਹ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਇਆ ਕਰਾਂ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਬਿਸਰੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਬਹੂ ਹੀਏ ਤੇ ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਪਾਵਹੁ ॥
bisar naahee kabhoo hee-ay tay ih biDh man meh paavhu.
O’ God, instill in me the wisdom, that I may never forsake You from my heart.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਤੂੰ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਪਾ ਦੇਹ ਕਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਤੋਂ ਤੂੰ ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਨਾਹ ਵਿਸਰੇਂ।
ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਤਹਿ ਨ ਧਾਵਹੁ ॥੨॥੩॥੩੧॥
gur pooraa bhayti-o vadbhaagee jan naanak kateh na Dhaavahu. ||2||3||31||
O’ Nanak, by good fortune you have met the perfect Guru; now you need not go elsewhere. ||2||3||31||
ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! ਤੈਨੂੰ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ, ਹੁਣ ਤੂੰ ਹੋਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਨਾਹ ਦੌੜਦਾ ਫਿਰ ॥੨॥੩॥੩੧॥

ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਮਰਣਿ ਸਭੁ ਕਛੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਬਿਰਥੀ ਘਾਲ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
jaa kai simran sabh kachh paa-ee-ai birthee ghaal na jaa-ee.
By meditating on God, we receive everything and our effort doesn’t go waste,
ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਹਰੇਕ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ) ਕੀਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ,
ਤਿਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਅਵਰ ਕਤ ਰਾਚਹੁ ਜੋ ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੧॥
tis parabh ti-aag avar kat raachahu jo sabh meh rahi-aa samaa-ee. ||1||
then forsaking that God who is omnipresent, why are you getting involved in others? ||1||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਵਿਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਹੋਰ ਕੇਹੜੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਮਸਤ ਹੋ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ? ॥੧॥
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਹੁ ਸੰਤ ਗੋਪਾਲਾ ॥
har har simrahu sant gopaalaa.
O’ saints, always keep meditating on God, the sustainer of the universe.
ਹੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ! ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦੇ ਪਾਲਣਹਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਰਹੋ।
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਹੁ ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਘਾਲਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
saaDhsang mil naam Dhi-aavahu pooran hovai ghaalaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Joining the congregation of saints, if you meditate on Naam, your effort will be fruitful. ||1||Pause||
ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਕਰੋ, (ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ) ਮੇਹਨਤ ਜ਼ਰੂਰ ਸਫਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸਾਰਿ ਸਮਾਲੈ ਨਿਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲੈ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਸਹਿਤ ਗਲਿ ਲਾਵੈ ॥
saar samaalai nit paratipaalai paraym sahit gal laavai.
God always takes care and sustains all, and embraces devotees with affection.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਾਰ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਦਾ ਪਾਲਣਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ) ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨਾਲ ਆਪਣੇ ਗਲੇ ਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੁਮਰੇ ਬਿਸਰਤ ਜਗਤ ਜੀਵਨੁ ਕੈਸੇ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੨॥੪॥੩੨॥
kaho naanak parabh tumray bisrat jagat jeevan kaisay paavai. ||2||4||32||
Nanak says, O’ God, by forsaking You, how can anybody spiritually survive in this world? ||2||4||32||
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ- ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੈਨੂੰ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਕੇ ਜੀਵ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ? ਤੇ, ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਹੈਂ ॥੨॥੪॥੩੨॥

Raag Sorath, Fifth Guru:
ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਜੀਅਨ ਕੋ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਸਭ ਮਲੁ ਖੋਈ ॥
abhinaasee jee-an ko daataa simrat sabh mal kho-ee.
The Eternal God is the benefactor of all beings; by meditating on Him, all one’s filth of vices is washed off.
ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ (ਮਨ ਤੋਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਸਾਰੀ ਮੈਲ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਨਾਸ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ, ਤੇ, ਜੋ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਣ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਭਗਤਨ ਕਉ ਬਰਤਨਿ ਬਿਰਲਾ ਪਾਵੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੧॥
gun niDhaan bhagtan ka-o bartan birlaa paavai ko-ee. ||1||
He is the treasure of virtues and the support of His devotees, but only a rare person realizes Him. ||1||
ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਾਰੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਹੈ, ਭਗਤਾਂ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਦਾ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਜਪਿ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਈ ॥
mayray man jap gur gopaal parabh so-ee.
O’ my mind, meditate on that Guru, the embodiment of God who is supreme and sustainer of the universe,
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਜਪਿਆ ਕਰੋ ਜੋ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦਾ ਪਾਲਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ,
ਜਾ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਇਆਂ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਬਾਹੁੜਿ ਦੂਖੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jaa kee saran pa-i-aaN sukh paa-ee-ai baahurh dookh na ho-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
seeking whose support we receive celestial peace and there is never any suffering after that. ||1||Pause||
ਤੇ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲਿਆਂ ਸੁਖ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲਈਦਾ ਹੈ, ਫਿਰ ਕਦੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਿਆਪਦਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਸਾਧਸੰਗੁ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਤਿਨ ਭੇਟਤ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥
