ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਉਬਰੇ ਜਿ ਆਪਿ ਮੇਲੇ ਕਰਤਾਰਿ ॥੨॥
naanak gurmukh ubray je aap maylay kartaar. ||2||
O Nanak, only those followers of the Guru are saved from worldly attachments whom the Creator unites with Himself. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੇ ਆਪ (ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ) ਜੋੜਿਆ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਇਸ (ਲਾਲਚ-ਰੂਪ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ) ਵਿਚੋਂ ਬਚ ਕੇ ਨਿਕਲਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨॥

Pauree:
ਭਗਤ ਸਚੈ ਦਰਿ ਸੋਹਦੇ ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਹਾਏ ॥
bhagat sachai dar sohday sachai sabad rahaa-ay.
The devotees who are attuned to God’s Naam look adorn the True Court of God.
ਬੰਦਗੀ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਸੋਭਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ) ਸੱਚੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਤਿਨ ਊਪਜੀ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕਸਾਏ ॥
har kee pareet tin oopjee har paraym kasaa-ay.
God’s Love wells up in their mind; they are attracted by His Love.
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਉਹ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਦੇ ਖਿੱਚੇ ਹੋਏ (ਹਨ),
ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਹਹਿ ਸਦਾ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਰਸਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਿਆਏ ॥
har rang raheh sadaa rang raatay rasnaa har ras pi-aa-ay.
They always remain absorbed in God’s love and are always relishing the sublime essence of that love.
ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਤੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਜੀਭ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਪੀਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਸਫਲੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਰਿਦੈ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
safal janam jinHee gurmukh jaataa har jee-o ridai vasaa-ay.
Fruitful is the birth of such persons, who through the Guru’s advice have realized God and have enshrined Him in their hearts.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਰੱਬ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਇਆ ਹੈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਜੰਮਣਾ ਮੁਬਾਰਿਕ ਹੈ।
ਬਾਝੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਫਿਰੈ ਬਿਲਲਾਦੀ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਖੁਆਏ ॥੧੧॥
baajh guroo firai billaadee doojai bhaa-ay khu-aa-ay. ||11||
Without Guru’s guidance, those who remain involved in the duality of the worldly riches and power, keep suffering and living in misery, ||11||
ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਖੁੰਝੀ ਹੋਈ ਵਿਲਕਦੀ ਫਿਰਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧੧॥

Shalok, Third Guru:
ਕਲਿਜੁਗ ਮਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਭਗਤੀ ਖਟਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਉਤਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
kalijug meh naam niDhaan bhagtee khati-aa har utam pad paa-i-aa.
In this dark age of Kalyug, devotees obtain the true treasure of God’s Naam and thus obtain the supreme status of union with God.
ਇਸ ਝੰਬੇਲਿਆਂ-ਭਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਹੀ) ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਬੰਦਗੀ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਇਹ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ) ਖੱਟ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਦਾ ਮੇਲ-ਰੂਪ) ਉੱਚਾ ਦਰਜਾ ਪਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ,
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਾਇਆ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥
satgur sayv har naam man vasaa-i-aa an-din naam Dhi-aa-i-aa.
Serving the True Guru, they enshrine God’s Naam in their hearts, and always meditate on the Naam, day and night.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਇਆ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਹੈ,
ਵਿਚੇ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨਿ ਉਦਾਸੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੋਹੁ ਜਲਾਇਆ ॥
vichay garih gur bachan udaasee ha-umai moh jalaa-i-aa.
Following the Guru’s guidance, they remain detached while living their lives as householders and thus destroy their ego and love of worldly riches.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਬਚਨ ਵਿਚ (ਤੁਰ ਕੇ) ਉਹ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਸਤ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਉਦਾਸੀ ਹੈ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਉਸ ਨੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਤੇ ਮੋਹ ਸਾੜ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ,
ਆਪਿ ਤਰਿਆ ਕੁਲ ਜਗਤੁ ਤਰਾਇਆ ਧੰਨੁ ਜਣੇਦੀ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
aap tari-aa kul jagat taraa-i-aa Dhan janaydee maa-i-aa.
Such a person not only does save himself, but also inspires others to swim across the worldly ocean of vices. Blessed is the mother who gave birth to such a person,
ਉਹ (ਇਸ ਝੰਬੇਲਿਆਂ-ਭਰੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਆਪ ਲੰਘ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ, ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਲੰਘਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਧੰਨ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜੰਮਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਮਾਂ!
ਐਸਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੋਈ ਪਾਏ ਜਿਸੁ ਧੁਰਿ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
aisaa satgur so-ee paa-ay jis Dhur mastak har likh paa-i-aa.
And the True Guru is found by such a person, into whose destiny God has preordained this.
ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਗੁਰੂ (ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ‘ਆਪਿ ਤਰਿਆ ਕੁਲ ਜਗਤੁ ਤਰਾਇਆ’) ਉਸੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਤੇ ਧੁਰੋਂ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੇ (ਬੰਦਗੀ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਲੇਖ) ਲਿਖ ਕੇ ਰੱਖ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
jan naanak balihaaree gur aapnay vitahu jin bharam bhulaa maarag paa-i-aa. ||1||
The humble devotee Nanak is a sacrifice to his Guru, who has put him, the lost one, on the right path. ||1||
ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ-) ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਹਾਂ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਭੁਲੇਖੇ ਵਿਚ ਭੁੱਲੇ ਨੂੰ ਰਾਹੇ ਪਾਇਆ ਹੈ ॥੧॥

Third Guru:
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮਾਇਆ ਵੇਖਿ ਭੁਲੇ ਜਿਉ ਦੇਖਿ ਦੀਪਕਿ ਪਤੰਗ ਪਚਾਇਆ ॥
tarai gun maa-i-aa vaykh bhulay ji-o daykh deepak patang pachaa-i-aa.
Upon beholding the three enticing forms of Maya, people go astray like the moth, which gets burned by being attracted to the fiery flame.
ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ ਤ੍ਰੈਗੁਣੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ (ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਸਹੀ ਰਸਤੇ ਤੋਂ) ਖੁੰਝ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਭੰਬਟ (ਦੀਵੇ ਨੂੰ) ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਦੀਵੇ ਉਤੇ ਸੜਦੇ ਹਨ;
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਭੁਲਿ ਭੁਲਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਵੇਖਹਿ ਦਿਖਾ ਕਿਨੈ ਕਿਹੁ ਆਣਿ ਚੜਾਇਆ ॥
pandit bhul bhul maa-i-aa vaykheh dikhaa kinai kihu aan charhaa-i-aa.
Even the pundits, forgetting their own sermons to others, look to see who has donated how much offering any one has made.
ਪੰਡਤ (ਕਥਾ ਸੁਣਾਂਦੇ) ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਲ ਹੀ ਤੱਕਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਵੇਖੀਏ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ ਕੁਝ ਲਿਆ ਕੇ ਭੇਟਾ ਰੱਖੀ ਹੈ (ਜਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ),
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਪੜਹਿ ਨਿਤ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਨਾਵਹੁ ਦਯਿ ਖੁਆਇਆ ॥
doojai bhaa-ay parheh nit bikhi-aa naavhu da-yi khu-aa-i-aa.
Swayed by the love of duality, they study methods to amass more and more worldly riches and power, thus God withholds His Grace from them.
ਸੋ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ (ਅਸਲ ਵਿਚ) ਸਦਾ ਮਾਇਆ (ਦੀ ਸੰਥਾ ਹੀ) ਪੜ੍ਹਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਨਾਮ ਵਲੋਂ ਖੁੰਝਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।
ਜੋਗੀ ਜੰਗਮ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਭੁਲੇ ਓਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਬਹੁ ਗਰਬੁ ਵਧਾਇਆ ॥
jogee jangam sani-aasee bhulay onHaa ahaNkaar baho garab vaDhaa-i-aa.
Even the yogis, wandering hermits, and those who have renounced the world, have also strayed from the right path; their ego and arrogance has increased immensely.
ਜੋਗੀ ਜੰਗਮ ਤੇ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ (ਭੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਰਾਹ ਤੋਂ) ਖੁੰਝੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ, (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ‘ਤਿਆਗ’ ਕਾਰਨ) ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਮਾਣ ਤੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਵਧਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ,
ਛਾਦਨੁ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਨ ਲੈਹੀ ਸਤ ਭਿਖਿਆ ਮਨਹਠਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥
chhaadan bhojan na laihee sat bhikhi-aa manhath janam gavaa-i-aa.
They look down upon the small amounts of true donations of clothes and food offered to them by ordinary people, thus their lives are ruined by their stubborn minds.
(ਗ੍ਰਿਹਸਤੀਆਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ) ਆਦਰ ਸਰਧਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਕੱਪੜਾ ਤੇ ਭੋਜਨ-ਰੂਪ ਭਿੱਛਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੈਂਦੇ (ਭਾਵ, ਥੋੜੀ ਚੀਜ਼ ਮਿਲਣ ਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਘੂਰਦੇ ਹਨ) ਤੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਹਠ ਨਾਲ ਆਪਣੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਅਜਾਈਂ ਗਵਾ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਏਤੜਿਆ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਸਮਧਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥
ayt-rhi-aa vichahu so jan samDhaa jin gurmukh naam Dhi-aa-i-aa.
Among these, he alone is a man of serenity who by following the Guru’s teachings, meditates on God’s Naam.
ਇਹਨਾਂ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪੂਰਨ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਆਖਿ ਸੁਣਾਈਐ ਜਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਸਭਿ ਕਰਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
jan naanak kis no aakh sunaa-ee-ai jaa karday sabh karaa-i-aa. ||2||
Unto whom should servant Nanak speak and complain when the Creator has Himself made the mortals do what they are doing. ||2||
ਪਰ, ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! ਹੋਰ ਕਿਸ ਅੱਗੇ ਪੁਕਾਰ ਕਰੀਏ? ਸਾਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਹੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ, (ਭਾਵ, ਇਸ ਮਾਇਆ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਣ ਲਈ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਅੱਗੇ ਹੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਸਹੈਤਾ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ) ॥੨॥
ਪਉੜੀ ॥
Pauree:
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਪਰੇਤੁ ਹੈ ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਾ ॥
maa-i-aa moh parayt hai kaam kroDh ahaNkaaraa.
Attachments to Maya, lust, anger and egotism are like demons.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ, ਕਾਮ, ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਤੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਸਭ ਇਕ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਭੂਤ ਹਨ;
ਏਹ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਸਿਰਕਾਰ ਹੈ ਏਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਉਪਰਿ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਡੰਡੁ ਕਰਾਰਾ ॥
ayh jam kee sirkaar hai aynHaa upar jam kaa dand karaaraa.
These are all under the jurisdiction of the Messenger of Death, above their heads hangs the heavy club of the Messenger of Death.
ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਮਰਾਜ ਦੀ ਰਈਅਤ ਹਨ, ਇਹਨਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਜਮਰਾਜ ਦਾ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਚੱਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਜਮ ਮਗਿ ਪਾਈਅਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥
manmukh jam mag paa-ee-aniH jinH doojaa bhaa-o pi-aaraa.
The self-conceited persons, who are in love with Maya, are pushed on to the path that leads to these demons.
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਮਿੱਠਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਮਰਾਜ ਦੇ ਰਾਹ ਤੇ ਪਾਏ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਬਧੇ ਮਾਰੀਅਨਿ ਕੋ ਸੁਣੈ ਨ ਪੂਕਾਰਾ ॥
jam pur baDhay maaree-an ko sunai na pookaaraa.
Shackled by the messenger of death, they are clubbed and beaten and no one hears their cries for help.
ਉਹ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਜਮ-ਪੁਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਝੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਾਰੀਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਪੁਕਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੁਣਦਾ (ਭਾਵ, ਇਹਨਾਂ ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੰਜੇ ਤੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਛੁਡਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ)।
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ॥੧੨॥
jis no kirpaa karay tis gur milai gurmukh nistaaraa. ||12||
One who is blessed by God himself meets the true Guru and is saved from the punishment by the demons. ||12||
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਭੂਤਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਛੁਟਕਾਰਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੨॥One who is blessed by God himself meets the true Guru by whose grace

Shalok, Third Guru:
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਮਨਮੁਖਾ ਨੋ ਗਈ ਖਾਇ ॥
ha-umai mamtaa mohnee manmukhaa no ga-ee khaa-ay.
Egotism and pride entices and consumes the self-conceited persons.
ਹਉਮੈ ਤੇ ਅਪਣੱਤ (ਸਰੂਪ ਵਾਲੀ ਮਾਇਆ, ਮਾਨੋ) ਚੁੜੇਲ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਆਪ-ਹੁਦਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੜੱਪ ਕਰ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਜੋ ਮੋਹਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਦੇ ਤਿਨਾ ਵਿਆਪਿ ਰਹੀ ਲਪਟਾਇ ॥
jo mohi doojai chit laa-iday tinaa vi-aap rahee laptaa-ay.
Those who attune their mind to the love of things other than God, it controls them by afflicting them with its poison.
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਰੱਬ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕਿਸੇ) ਹੋਰ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਚਿੱਤ ਜੋੜਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਬੜ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਰਜਾਲੀਐ ਤਾ ਏਹ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
gur kai sabad parjaalee-ai taa ayh vichahu jaa-ay.
But when it is burnt away by the Word of the Guru’s teachings, then it is excised from within.
ਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨਾਲ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਾੜੀਏ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਨਿਕਲਦੀ ਹੈ;
ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਉਜਲਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥
tan man hovai ujlaa naam vasai man aa-ay.
Then the body and mind become radiant and God’s Naam comes to dwell within their hearts.
ਤਾਂ ਸਰੀਰ ਤੇ ਮਨ ਸੁਅੱਛ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ; ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਮਾਰਣੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
naanak maa-i-aa kaa maaran har naam hai gurmukh paa-i-aa jaa-ay. ||1||
O Nanak, God’s Naam is the antidote to Maya; it can be obtained by following the Guru’s teachings. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਇਸ ਮਾਇਆ (ਸੰਖੀਏ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਸ਼ਤਾ ਕਰਨ) ਦੀ ਬੂਟੀ ਇੱਕ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥

Third Guru:
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਕੇਤੜਿਆ ਜੁਗ ਭਰਮਿਆ ਥਿਰੁ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
ih man kayt-rhi-aa jug bharmi-aa thir rahai na aavai jaa-ay.
This soul-mind has been wandering around for ages; it doesn’t attain equipoise and keeps going through cycles of birth and death.
(ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ) ਇਹ ਮਨ ਕਈ ਜੁਗ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ) ਟਿਕਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਤੇ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਮਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ;
ਹਰਿ ਭਾਣਾ ਤਾ ਭਰਮਾਇਅਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਪਰਪੰਚੁ ਖੇਲੁ ਉਪਾਇ ॥
har bhaanaa taa bharmaa-i-an kar parpanch khayl upaa-ay.
It is God’s will that causes the soul-mind to wander, He has set the world-drama in motion.
ਪਰ ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ (ਏਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਭਾਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਠੱਗਣ ਵਾਲੀ (ਜਗਤ-ਖੇਡ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਵਿਚ) ਭਰਮਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਜਾ ਹਰਿ ਬਖਸੇ ਤਾ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲੈ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
jaa har bakhsay taa gur milai asthir rahai samaa-ay.
When God showers grace, one meets the Guru, achieves poise and remains absorbed in God.
ਜਦੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਆਪ) ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ (ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ) ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਫਿਰ) ਇਹ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ) ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ;
