ਨੰਗਾ ਦੋਜਕਿ ਚਾਲਿਆ ਤਾ ਦਿਸੈ ਖਰਾ ਡਰਾਵਣਾ ॥
nangaa dojak chaali-aa taa disai kharaa daraavanaa.
When his sinful deeds are exposed, he looks very hideous while suffering.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਪਾਪ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਨਕਸ਼ਾ ਉਸਦੇ ਸਾਮ੍ਹਣੇ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਦੋਜ਼ਕ ਵਿਚ ਧਕਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ l ਉਸ ਵੇਲੇ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ) ਬੜਾ ਡਰਾਉਣਾ ਰੂਪ ਦਿਸਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਰਿ ਅਉਗਣ ਪਛੋਤਾਵਣਾ ॥੧੪॥

Then, he regrets the sins he committed.
ਉਹ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਤੇ ਪਸਚਾਤਾਪ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਦਇਆ ਕਪਾਹ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਸੂਤੁ ਜਤੁ ਗੰਢੀ ਸਤੁ ਵਟੁ ॥
da-i-and kapaah santokh soot jat gandhee sat vat.
O’ Pundit, a thread made out of compassion, contentment, celibacy and high moral character instead of cotton,
ਹੇ ਪੰਡਤ! ਉਹ ਜਨੇਊ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਕਪਾਹ ਦਇਆ ਹੋਵੇ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸੂਤ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਹੋਵੇ, ਜਿਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੰਢਾਂ ਜਤ ਹੋਣ, ਅਤੇ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਵੱਟ ਉੱਚਾ ਆਚਰਨ ਹੋਵੇ,
ਏਹੁ ਜਨੇਊ ਜੀਅ ਕਾ ਹਈ ਤ ਪਾਡੇ ਘਤੁ ॥
ayhu janay-oo jee-a kaa ha-ee ta paaday ghat.
is the sacred thread of the soul; if you have it, then go ahead and put it on me.
ਜੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਪਾਸ ਇਹ ਆਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਆਉਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਜਨੇਊ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਮੇਰੇ ਗਲ ਪਾ ਦੇਹ।
ਨਾ ਏਹੁ ਤੁਟੈ ਨ ਮਲੁ ਲਗੈ ਨਾ ਏਹੁ ਜਲੈ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
naa ayhu tutai na mal lagai naa ayhu jalai na jaa-ay.
It does not break, it cannot be soiled by filth, it cannot be burnt, or lost.
ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਜਨੇਊ ਨਾ ਟੁੱਟਦਾ ਹੈ, ਨਾ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਮੈਲ ਲੱਗਦੀ ਹੈ, ਨਾ ਇਹ ਸੜਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਨਾ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਗੁਆਚਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਧੰਨੁ ਸੁ ਮਾਣਸ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜੋ ਗਲਿ ਚਲੇ ਪਾਇ ॥
Dhan so maanas naankaa jo gal chalay paa-ay.
O’ Nanak, Blessed are those mortals, who has such a thread around their necks.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਜਨੇਊ ਆਪਣੇ ਗਲੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਚਉਕੜਿ ਮੁਲਿ ਅਣਾਇਆ ਬਹਿ ਚਉਕੈ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
cha-ukarh mul anaa-i-aa bahi cha-ukai paa-i-aa.
You buy this thread for four pennies, sitting in the kitchen of the host, you put it around his neck.
ਇਹ ਜਨੇਊ ਜੋ ਤੂੰ ਚਾਰ ਕੌਡਾਂ ਮੁੱਲ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਮੰਗਵਾ ਲਿਆ, ਜਜਮਾਨ ਦੇ ਚੌਕੇ ਵਿਚ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗਲ ਪਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ,
ਸਿਖਾ ਕੰਨਿ ਚੜਾਈਆ ਗੁਰੁ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣੁ ਥਿਆ ॥
sikhaa kann charhaa-ee-aa gur baraahman thi-aa.
Then you whisper in his ear that from now on the Brahman is your guru.
ਫੇਰ ਤੂੰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਕੰਨ ਵਿਚ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਕਿ ਅੱਜ ਤੋਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ।
ਓਹੁ ਮੁਆ ਓਹੁ ਝੜਿ ਪਇਆ ਵੇਤਗਾ ਗਇਆ ॥੧॥
oh mu-aa oh jharh pa-i-aa vaytgaa ga-i-aa. ||1||
But when he dies, the sacred thread falls away, and the soul departs without it.
ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਜਜਮਾਨ ਮਰ ਗਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਜਨੇਊ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਤੋਂ ਢਹਿ ਪਿਆ , ਪਰ ਆਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਾ ਨਿਭਿਆ l

ਲਖ ਚੋਰੀਆ ਲਖ ਜਾਰੀਆ ਲਖ ਕੂੜੀਆ ਲਖ ਗਾਲਿ ॥
lakh choree-aa lakh jaaree-aa lakh koorhee-aa lakh gaal.
A human being commits thousands of robberies, thousands of acts of adultery, thousands of falsehoods and thousands of verbal abuses.
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਚੋਰੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਵਿਭਚਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਝੂਠ ਤੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਬਚਨ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਲਖ ਠਗੀਆ ਪਹਿਨਾਮੀਆ ਰਾਤਿ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਜੀਅ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
lakh thagee-aa pahinaamee-aa raat dinas jee-a naal.
He practices thousands of deceptions and secret deeds, night and day, against his fellow beings.
ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਚੋਰੀ ਚੋਰੀ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਠੱਗੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਪਹਿਨਾਮੀਆਂ (ਅਮਾਨਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਖ਼ਿਆਨਤ) ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਤਗੁ ਕਪਾਹਹੁ ਕਤੀਐ ਬਾਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਣੁ ਵਟੇ ਆਇ ॥
tag kapaahahu katee-ai baamHan vatay aa-ay
The sacred thread is spun from cotton, and the Brahmin comes and twists it.
ਧਾਗਾ ਰੂੰ ਤੋਂ ਕੱਤਿਆਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਆ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਟਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕੁਹਿ ਬਕਰਾ ਰਿੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਖਾਇਆ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਆਖੈ ਪਾਇ ॥
kuhi bakraa rinniH khaa-i-aa sabh ko aakhai paa-ay.
The goat is killed, cooked and eaten by all, and everyone then says, sacred thread has been worn.
ਬੱਕਰਾ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਪਕਾਇਆ ਤੇ ਖਾਧਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ; ਹਰੇਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ ‘ਜਨੇਊ ਪਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ;
ਹੋਇ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਸੁਟੀਐ ਭੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਹੋਰੁ ॥
ho-ay puraanaa sutee-ai bhee fir paa-ee-ai hor.
When sacred thread wears out, it is thrown away, and another one is put on.
ਜਦੋਂ ਇਹ ਜਨੇਊ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਸੁੱਟ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਥਾਂ ਹੋਰ ਜਨੇਊ ਪਾ ਲਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਗੁ ਨ ਤੁਟਈ ਜੇ ਤਗਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਜੋਰੁ ॥੨॥
naanak tag na tut-ee jay tag hovai jor. ||2||
O Nanak, the thread would not break if it had the strength of compassion, contentment and high moral character.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਧਾਗਾ ਟੁਟੇ ਹੀ ਨਾਂ, ਜੇਕਰ ਧਾਗੇ ਵਿੱਚ (ਆਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਬਲ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ) ਕੋਈ ਸੱਤਿਆ ਹੋਵੇ।

ਨਾਇ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਪਤਿ ਊਪਜੈ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਸਚੁ ਸੂਤੁ ॥
naa-ay mani-ai pat oopjai saalaahee sach soot.
We get honor in God’s court only when we enshrine His Name in our heart, because singing praises of God is the true sacred thread.
ਰੱਬ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਆਦਰ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੇ ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਦ੍ਰਿੜ੍ਹ ਕਰ ਲਈਏ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਰੱਬ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਹੀ ਸੁੱਚਾ ਜਨੇਊ ਹੈ;
ਦਰਗਹ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਤਗੁ ਨ ਤੂਟਸਿ ਪੂਤ ॥੩॥
dargeh andar paa-ee-ai tag na tootas poot. ||3||
By wearing such a sacred thread, honor is obtained in God’s court. This sacred thread never breaks.
ਇਹ ਸੁੱਚਾ ਜਨੇਊ ਧਾਰਨ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਰੱਬ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਣ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਕਦੇ ਟੁੱਟਦਾ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ l

ਤਗੁ ਨ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੀ ਤਗੁ ਨ ਨਾਰੀ ॥
tag na indree tag na naaree.
Pandit wears no thread to restrain his senses and body from the vices.
ਪੰਡਤ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਇੰਦਰਿਆਂ ਤੇ ਨਾੜੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਜਨੇਊ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਇਆ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਇੰਦਰੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲ ਨਾ ਜਾਣ;
ਭਲਕੇ ਥੁਕ ਪਵੈ ਨਿਤ ਦਾੜੀ ॥
bhalkay thuk pavai nit daarhee.
Every day he is committing sins, and therefore being humiliated.
ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਬੇਇੱਜ਼ਤੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ l
ਤਗੁ ਨ ਪੈਰੀ ਤਗੁ ਨ ਹਥੀ ॥
tag na pairee tag na hathee.
He wears no sacred thread on his feet to prevent him going to bad places, and no thread on his hands to restrain him from committing any evil deeds.
ਪੈਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਜਨੇਊ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਇਆ ਕਿ ਭੈੜੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਨਾ ਲੈ ਜਾਣ, ਹੱਥਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਜਨੇਊ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਇਆ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਮੰਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਨਾ ਕਰਨ l
ਤਗੁ ਨ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਤਗੁ ਨ ਅਖੀ ॥
tag na jihvaa tag na akhee.
He has no thread for his tongue to prevent slandering, and no thread for his eyes to stop looking with evil intent.
ਜੀਭ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਜਨੇਊ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਇਆ ਕਿ ਪਰਾਈ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਹਟੀ ਰਹੇ, ਅੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਐਸਾ ਜਨੇਊ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਇਆ ਕਿ ਪਰਾਈ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਵਲ ਨਾ ਤੱਕਣ।
ਵੇਤਗਾ ਆਪੇ ਵਤੈ ॥ਵਟਿ ਧਾਗੇ ਅਵਰਾ ਘਤੈ ॥
vaytgaa aapay vatai.vat Dhaagay avraa ghatai. vat Dhaagay avraa ghatai.
Although he himself is roaming around without any thread of moral restraint, he makes and puts threads on others.
ਆਪ ਤਾਂ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਜਨੇਊ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਧਾਗੇ ਵੱਟ ਵੱਟ ਕੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਲੈ ਭਾੜਿ ਕਰੇ ਵੀਆਹੁ ॥
lai bhaarh karay vee-aahu.
He takes payment for performing marriages;
ਆਪਣੇ ਹੀ ਜਜਮਾਨਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਧੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਵਿਆਹ ਕਰਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਉਹ ਮਜਦੂਰੀ (ਦੱਛਣਾ) ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਕਢਿ ਕਾਗਲੁ ਦਸੇ ਰਾਹੁ ॥
kadh kaagal dasay raahu.
reading their horoscopes, he shows them the way.
ਤੇ ਪੱਤ੍ਰੀ ਸੋਧ ਸੋਧ ਕੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਰਸਤਾ ਦੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸੁਣਿ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਲੋਕਾ ਏਹੁ ਵਿਡਾਣੁ ॥
sun vaykhhu lokaa ayhu vidaan.
O’ people, look and listen to this astonishing play,
ਹੇ ਲੋਕੋ! ਸੁਣੋ, ਵੇਖੋ, ਇਹ ਅਚਰਜ ਤਮਾਸ਼ਾ!
ਮਨਿ ਅੰਧਾ ਨਾਉ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ॥੪॥
man anDhaa naa-o sujaan. ||4||
that pandit himself is ignorant, and yet he calls himself the wise one.
ਆਤਮਕ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੁੰਦਿਆਂ ਹੋਇਆ ਭੀ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਹੈ।

Pauree:
ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਸਾਈ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਾਇਸੀ ॥
saahib ho-ay da-i-aal kirpaa karay taa saa-ee kaar karaa-isee.
When the Master becomes gracious and bestows mercy on someone, He makes him do only that deed which pleases Him.
ਜਿਸ ਉੱਤੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਦਇਆਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ, ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰੇ, ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਉਹੀ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਸੋ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਮਨਾਇਸੀ ॥
so sayvak sayvaa karay jis no hukam manaa-isee.
That servant, whom God causes to obey His Command, truly serves Him.
ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਤੋਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸੇਵਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਹੁਕਮਿ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਹੋਵੈ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਤਾ ਖਸਮੈ ਕਾ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਾਇਸੀ ॥
hukam mani-ai hovai parvaan taa khasmai kaa mahal paa-isee.
Obeying His Command, he becomes acceptable in God’s court, and then, he merges with Him.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਰਾਜ਼ੀ ਰਹਿਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਕਬੂਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਨੂੰ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਖਸਮੈ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਕਰੇ ਮਨਹੁ ਚਿੰਦਿਆ ਸੋ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਇਸੀ ॥
khasmai bhaavai so karay manhu chindi-aa so fal paa-isee.
When one does what pleases His Master, obtains the fruits of his mind’s desires.
ਜਦੋਂ ਸੇਵਕ ਉਹੀ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਮਾਲਕ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਨ-ਭਾਉਂਦਾ ਫਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਤਾ ਦਰਗਹ ਪੈਧਾ ਜਾਇਸੀ ॥੧੫॥
taa dargeh paiDhaa jaa-isee. ||15||
Then, he goes to God’s Court in honor.
ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

ਗਊ ਬਿਰਾਹਮਣ ਕਉ ਕਰੁ ਲਾਵਹੁ ਗੋਬਰਿ ਤਰਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
ga-oo biraahman ka-o kar laavhu gobar taran na jaa-ee.
O Pandit, on one hand you impose tax on the cows and the Brahmins and on the other hand you apply cow-dung to the kitchen floor for purification. Remember that this will not help you cross the world ocean of vices.
ਹੇ ਪੰਡਤ! ਗਊ ਅਤੇ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਨੂੰ ਦਰਿਆ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾਣ ਦਾ ਤਾਂ ਤੂੰ ਮਸੂਲ ਲਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੇ ਤੂੰ ਕਦੇ ਇਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੋਚਦਾ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਗਊ ਦੇ ਗੋਹੇ ਨਾਲ ਪੋਚਾ ਫੇਰਿਆਂ, ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਤਰਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਧੋਤੀ ਟਿਕਾ ਤੈ ਜਪਮਾਲੀ ਧਾਨੁ ਮਲੇਛਾਂ ਖਾਈ ॥
Dhotee tikaa tai japmaalee Dhaan malaychhaaN khaa-ee.
You wear loin-cloth, apply a frontal mark, and carry the rosaries, but you eat the grains supplied by the Malech (the polluted ones).
ਤੂੰ ਧੋਤੀ ਪਹਿਨਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਟਿੱਕਾ ਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਅਤੇ ਮਾਲਾ ਫੇਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਪਰ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਛਕਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਮਲੇਛ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈਂ l
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪੂਜਾ ਪੜਹਿ ਕਤੇਬਾ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਤੁਰਕਾ ਭਾਈ ॥
antar poojaa parheh kataybaa sanjam turkaa bhaa-ee.
O’ brother, inside your home, you perform devotional worship, but outside you read the Semitic books, and observe Muslim austerities.
ਹੇ ਭਰਾ! ਅੰਦਰ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ, ਤੁਰਕ ਹਾਕਮਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਚੋਰੀ ਚੋਰੀ ਤੂੰ ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਬਾਹਰ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਖਾਲਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਤੂੰ ਕੁਰਾਨ ਆਦਿ ਪੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੇ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੀ ਰਹਿਤ ਤੂੰ ਰੱਖੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।
ਛੋਡੀਲੇ ਪਾਖੰਡਾ ॥
chhodeelay paakhandaa.
Renounce your hypocrisy,
ਇਹ ਪਾਖੰਡ (ਦੰਭਪੁਣਾ) ਤੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਹ,
ਨਾਮਿ ਲਇਐ ਜਾਹਿ ਤਰੰਦਾ ॥੧॥
naam la-i-ai jaahi tarandaa. ||1||
because it is only by remembering God’s Name, that you will swim across the worldly ocean of vices.
ਜੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰੇਂਗਾ, ਤਾਂ ਹੀ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਤਰੇਂਗਾ l

Salok, First Guru:
ਮਾਣਸ ਖਾਣੇ ਕਰਹਿ ਨਿਵਾਜ ॥
maanas khaanay karahi nivaaj.
The corrupt rulers, say their daily prayers, but oppress their subjects.
ਹਾਕਮ (ਕਾਜ਼ੀ ਤੇ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨ) ਹਨ ਤਾਂ ਵੱਢੀ-ਖ਼ੋਰੇ, ਪਰ ਪੜ੍ਹਦੇ ਹਨ ਨਮਾਜ਼ਾਂ।
ਛੁਰੀ ਵਗਾਇਨਿ ਤਿਨ ਗਲਿ ਤਾਗ ॥
chhuree vagaa-in tin gal taag.
Wearing the sacred thread around their necks, they torture the poor.
ਇਹਨਾਂ ਹਾਕਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੁਨਸ਼ੀ ਖੱਤ੍ਰੀ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਜਨੇਊ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਛੁਰੀ ਚਲਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਗ਼ਰੀਬਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਜ਼ੁਲਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ)।
ਤਿਨ ਘਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਣ ਪੂਰਹਿ ਨਾਦ ॥
tin ghar barahman pooreh naad.
In their homes, the Brahmins sound the shankh (conch) to get rewarded.
ਇਹਨਾਂ (ਜ਼ਾਲਮ ਖੱਤ੍ਰੀਆਂ) ਦੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਸੰਖ ਵਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ;
ਉਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਭਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਓਈ ਸਾਦ ॥
unHaa bhe aavahi o-ee saad.
The Brahmins too enjoy the taste of ill-gotten wealth.
ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਜ਼ੁਲਮ ਦੇ ਕਮਾਏ ਹੋਏ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਦ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਭੀ ਜ਼ੁਲਮ ਦੇ ਕਮਾਏ ਹੋਏ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ)।
ਕੂੜੀ ਰਾਸਿ ਕੂੜਾ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ॥
koorhee raas koorhaa vaapaar.
False is their capital, and false is their trade.
ਝੂਠੀ ਹੈ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਪੂੰਜੀ ਅਤੇ ਝੁਠਾ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਵਣਜ।
ਕੂੜੁ ਬੋਲਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਆਹਾਰੁ ॥
koorh bol karahi aahaar.
They earn their livelihood by telling lies.
ਝੂਠ ਬੋਲ ਬੋਲ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਰੋਜ਼ੀ ਕਮਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਸਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਕਾ ਡੇਰਾ ਦੂਰਿ ॥
saram Dharam kaa dayraa door
They have no sense of shame and they do not perform any righteous deeds.
ਸ਼ਰਮ ਤੇ ਧਰਮ ਦਾ ਵਸੇਬਾ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕੋਲੋਂ ਦੁਰੇਡੇ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਲੋਕ ਨਾ ਆਪਣੀ ਸ਼ਰਮ ਹਯਾ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਿਆਲ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਨਾ ਹੀ ਧਰਮ ਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਕੂੜੁ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ॥
naanak koorh rahi-aa bharpoor.
O’ Nanak, falsehood is prevailing all around.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸਭ ਥਾਈਂ ਝੂਠ ਹੀ ਪਰਧਾਨ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਮਥੈ ਟਿਕਾ ਤੇੜਿ ਧੋਤੀ ਕਖਾਈ ॥
mathai tikaa tayrh Dhotee kakhaa-ee.
With sacred marks on their foreheads, and the saffron colored loin-cloth around their waists (profess holiness from outside).
ਮੱਥੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਟਿੱਕਾ ਲਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਲੱਕ ਦੁਆਲੇ ਗੇਰੂਏ ਰੰਗ ਦੀ ਧੋਤੀ ਬੰਨ੍ਹਦੇ ਹਨ l
ਹਥਿ ਛੁਰੀ ਜਗਤ ਕਾਸਾਈ ॥
hath chhuree jagat kaasaa-ee.
But in real life, they are the most corrupt officials ready to torture the entire world, as if they are the butchers of the world with knives in their hands.
ਪਰ ਹੱਥ ਵਿਚ, ਮਾਨੋ ਛੁਰੀ ਫੜੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਵੱਸ ਲਗਦਿਆਂ ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਉੱਤੇ ਜ਼ੁਲਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
