ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੇ ਸੋ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
satgur bhaytay so sukh paa-ay.
Only he, who meets the True Guru, enjoys peace.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ (ਅਸਲੀ) ਸੁਖ ਉਹੀ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
har kaa naam man vasaa-ay.
Because he enshrines God’s Name in his mind.
ਉਹ ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ (ਟਿਕਾਂਦਾ) ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੋ ਪਾਏ ॥
naanak nadar karay so paa-ay.
O’ Nanak, only he on Whom God bestows His grace, meets the Guru.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰੂ ਭੀ ਉਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਉੱਤੇ ਆਪ ਦਾਤਾਰ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਸ ਅੰਦੇਸੇ ਤੇ ਨਿਹਕੇਵਲੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥੨॥
aas andaysay tay nihkayval ha-umai sabad jalaa-ay. ||2||
Then becoming unaffected by any kind of hopes and worries, and following the Guru’s word, he burns away his ego.
ਉਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਆਸਾਂ ਤੇ ਫ਼ਿਕਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਆਪਣੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਨੂੰ ਸਾੜ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥

ਭਗਤ ਤੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵਦੇ ਦਰਿ ਸੋਹਨਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਗਾਵਦੇ ॥
bhagat tayrai man bhaavday dar sohan keerat gaavday.
O’ God, Your devotees are pleasing to Your mind. They look beautiful at Your doorstep, singing Your Praises.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਭਗਤ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਲਗਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਸੋਭ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਮਾ ਬਾਹਰੇ ਦਰਿ ਢੋਅ ਨ ਲਹਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਧਾਵਦੇ ॥
naanak karmaa baahray dar dho-a na lehnHee Dhaavday.
O’ Nanak, they who are deprived of God’s Grace, find no shelter in His Court and keep wandering aimlessly.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਭਾਗ-ਹੀਣ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਥਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦੀ,
ਇਕਿ ਮੂਲੁ ਨ ਬੁਝਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਆਪਣਾ ਅਣਹੋਦਾ ਆਪੁ ਗਣਾਇਦੇ ॥
ik mool na bujhniH aapnaa anhodaa aap ganaa-iday.
There are some who do not understand their roots, and without any spiritual merit, they call themselves great.
ਇਹ (ਵਿਚਾਰੇ) ਆਪਣੇ ਅਸਲੇ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦੇ, ਰੱਬੀ ਗੁਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਡਾ ਜਤਲਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਹਉ ਢਾਢੀ ਕਾ ਨੀਚ ਜਾਤਿ ਹੋਰਿ ਉਤਮ ਜਾਤਿ ਸਦਾਇਦੇ ॥
ha-o dhaadhee kaa neech jaat hor utam jaat sadaa-iday.
O’ God, while others claim themselves belonging to high social status, I am only a minstrel of low social status.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰ ਦਾ) ਮੈਂ ਨੀਵੀਂ ਜਾਤ ਵਾਲਾ ਇਕ ਮਾੜਾ ਜਿਹਾ ਢਾਢੀ ਹਾਂ, ਹੋਰ ਲੋਕ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਉੱਤਮ ਜਾਤ ਵਾਲੇ ਅਖਵਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਮੰਗਾ ਜਿ ਤੁਝੈ ਧਿਆਇਦੇ ॥੯॥
tinH mangaa je tujhai Dhi-aa-iday. ||9||
I only seek the company of those who meditate upon You.
ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਜੋ ਤੇਰੀ ਬੰਦਗੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।

Salok, First Guru:
ਕੂੜੁ ਰਾਜਾ ਕੂੜੁ ਪਰਜਾ ਕੂੜੁ ਸਭੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥
koorh raajaa koorh parjaa koorh sabh sansaar.
This entire world is an illusion like the act of a magician. In this false world, false (short lived) is the king and false are his subjects.
ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਛਲ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਮਦਾਰੀ ਦਾ ਸਾਰਾ ਤਮਾਸ਼ਾ ਛਲ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਰਾਜਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਕਈ ਲੋਕ ਪਰਜਾ (ਹਨ)। ਇਹ ਭੀ ਮਦਾਰੀ ਦੇ ਰੁਪਏ ਤੇ ਖੋਪੇ ਆਦਿਕ ਵਿਖਾਣ ਵਾਂਗ ਛਲ ਹੀ ਹਨ।
ਕੂੜੁ ਮੰਡਪ ਕੂੜੁ ਮਾੜੀ ਕੂੜੁ ਬੈਸਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
koorh mandap koorh maarhee koorh baisanhaar.
False are the palaces and mansions and perishable are those who live in them.
ਝੂਠਾ ਹੈ ਮਹਿਲ, ਝੂਠੀ ਹੀ ਉਚੀ ਅਟਾਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਝੂਠਾ ਹੈ ਅੰਦਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ।
ਕੂੜੁ ਸੁਇਨਾ ਕੂੜੁ ਰੁਪਾ ਕੂੜੁ ਪੈਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
koorh su-inaa koorh rupaa koorh painHanhaar.
False are the gold and silver ornaments, and false are those who wear them.
ਸੋਨਾ, ਚਾਂਦੀ (ਅਤੇ ਸੋਨੇ ਚਾਂਦੀ ਨੂੰ ਪਹਿਨਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਭੀ) ਭਰਮ ਰੂਪ ਹੀ ਹਨ,
ਕੂੜੁ ਕਾਇਆ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਪੜੁ ਕੂੜੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥
koorh kaa-i-aa koorh kaparh koorh roop apaar.
False is the body, false are the dresses and illusory is the extreme beauty.
ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰਕ ਅਕਾਰ, ਸੋਹਣੇ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਅਤੇ ਸਰੀਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਰੂਪ ਇਹ ਭੀ ਸਾਰੇ ਛਲ ਹੀ ਹਨ ।
ਕੂੜੁ ਮੀਆ ਕੂੜੁ ਬੀਬੀ ਖਪਿ ਹੋਏ ਖਾਰੁ ॥
koorh mee-aa koorh beebee khap ho-ay khaar.
The relationship between a husband and a wife is of very short duration and they are being wasted away in false conflicts.
ਇਹ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ-ਮਰਦ ਵਾਲੇ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਛਲ ਵਿਚ ਖਚਿਤ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੋ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।
ਕੂੜਿ ਕੂੜੈ ਨੇਹੁ ਲਗਾ ਵਿਸਰਿਆ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥
koorh koorhai nayhu lagaa visri-aa kartaar.
The false ones love falsehood, and forget their Creator.
ਛਲ ਵਿਚ ਫਸੇ ਹੋਏ ਜੀਵ ਦਾ ਛਲ ਵਿਚ ਮੋਹ ਪੈ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਭੁੱਲ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਕਿਸੁ ਨਾਲਿ ਕੀਚੈ ਦੋਸਤੀ ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਚਲਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
kis naal keechai dostee sabh jag chalanhaar.
With whom should we become friends, when the entire world is transitory?
ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਹੈ, ਕਿਸੇ ਨਾਲ ਭੀ ਮੋਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ।
ਕੂੜੁ ਮਿਠਾ ਕੂੜੁ ਮਾਖਿਉ ਕੂੜੁ ਡੋਬੇ ਪੂਰੁ ॥
koorh mithaa koorh maakhi-o koorh dobay poor.
To the mortals this illusory world seems sweet like honey and that is why this false illusion is destroying multitudes of people.
ਛਲ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ਹਿਦ ਵਾਂਗ ਮਿੱਠਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਇਹ ਛਲ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਡੋਬ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਤੁਧੁ ਬਾਝੁ ਕੂੜੋ ਕੂੜੁ ॥੧॥
naanak vakhaanai bayntee tuDh baajh koorho koorh. ||1||
O’ God, Nanak makes this supplication, that without You, everything is totally false and illusory.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇਰੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਅਰਜ਼ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਤੈਥੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਇਹ ਜਗਤ ਛਲ ਹੈ l

ਸਚੁ ਤਾ ਪਰੁ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਜਾ ਰਿਦੈ ਸਚਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
sach taa par jaanee-ai jaa ridai sachaa ho-ay.
One knows the Truth only when God dwells in one’s heart.
ਸਚੁ ਦੀ ਸਮਝ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਅਸਲੀਅਤ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ (ਰੱਬ) ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਜਾਏ।
ਕੂੜ ਕੀ ਮਲੁ ਉਤਰੈ ਤਨੁ ਕਰੇ ਹਛਾ ਧੋਇ ॥
koorh kee mal utrai tan karay hachhaa Dho-ay.
The filth of falsehood is removed and the mind and body is freed from the vices.
ਜਦੋਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਛਲ ਦਾ ਅਸਰ ਮਨ ਤੋਂ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ ਸਰੀਰਕ ਇੰਦਰੇ ਭੀ ਗੰਦੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਵਲੋਂ ਹਟ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ l
ਸਚੁ ਤਾ ਪਰੁ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਜਾ ਸਚਿ ਧਰੇ ਪਿਆਰ
sach taa par jaanee-ai jaa sach Dharay pi-aar.
One comes to know the truth about the world only when he bears love for God.
ਸਚੁ ਦੀ ਸਮਝ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜਦ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਉ ਸੁਣਿ ਮਨੁ ਰਹਸੀਐ ਤਾ ਪਾਏ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥
naa-o sun man rehsee-ai taa paa-ay mokh du-aar.
Hearing God’s Name, mind is pleased; then, one attains freedom from the worldly entanglements.
ਨਾਮ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਖਿੜਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸੁਤੰਤਰ ਹੋਣ ਦਾ ਰਾਹ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਚੁ ਤਾ ਪਰੁ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਜਾ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਜੀਉ ॥
sach taa par jaanee-ai jaa jugat jaanai jee-o.
One knows the Truth only when he knows the true way of life.
ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਅਸਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਮਝ ਤਦੋਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਰੱਬੀ ਜੀਵਨ (ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰਨ ਦੀ) ਜੁਗਤੀ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੋਵੇ,
ਧਰਤਿ ਕਾਇਆ ਸਾਧਿ ਕੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਦੇਇ ਕਰਤਾ ਬੀਉ ॥
Dharat kaa-i-aa saaDh kai vich day-ay kartaa bee-o.
Preparing the body like a farm, he plants the Seed of God’s Name.
ਭਾਵ, ਸਰੀਰ ਰੂਪ ਧਰਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਰ ਕਰਕੇ ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਬੀਜ ਦੇਵੇ।
ਸਚੁ ਤਾ ਪਰੁ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਜਾ ਸਿਖ ਸਚੀ ਲੇਇ ॥
sach taa par jaanee-ai jaa sikh sachee lay-ay.
One knows the Truth only when he receives true teachings from the Guru.
ਸੱਚ ਦੀ ਪਰਖ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜਦੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਸੱਚੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਲਏ,
ਦਇਆ ਜਾਣੈ ਜੀਅ ਕੀ ਕਿਛੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
da-i-aa jaanai jee-a kee kichh punn daan karay-i.
Showing mercy to other beings, and does some acts of charity and kindness.
ਅਤੇ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਤਰਸ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਜਾਚ ਸਿੱਖੇ ਤੇ ਲੋੜਵੰਦਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਝ ਦਾਨ ਪੁੰਨ ਕਰੇ।
ਸਚੁ ਤਾਂ ਪਰੁ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਜਾ ਆਤਮ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਕਰੇ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥
sach taaN par jaanee-ai jaa aatam tirath karay nivaas.
One knows the Truth only when he dwells in the sacred shrine of the self.
ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਜਾਣ-ਪਛਾਣ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਧੁਰ ਅੰਦਰਲੇ ਆਤਮ ਰੂਪ ਤੀਰਥ ਉੱਤੇ ਟਿਕੇ,
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੋ ਪੁਛਿ ਕੈ ਬਹਿ ਰਹੈ ਕਰੇ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥ ॥
satguroo no puchh kai bahi rahai karay nivaas.
Obtaining teachings from the True Guru, he keeps focusing on the inner self.
ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਅੰਦਰਲੇ ਤੀਰਥ ਉੱਤੇ ਬੈਠਾ ਰਹੇ, ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲ ਦੌੜਨ ਤੋਂ ਰੋਕ ਰੱਖੇ।
ਸਚੁ ਸਭਨਾ ਹੋਇ ਦਾਰੂ ਪਾਪ ਕਢੈ ਧੋਇ ॥
sach sabhnaa ho-ay daaroo paap kadhai Dho-ay.
God Himself becomes the remedy of all the ailments; and drives out all the sins.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਲਾਜ ਆਪ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ l ਉਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕੱਢ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜਿੱਥੇ ਉਹ ਵੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ),
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਜਿਨ ਸਚੁ ਪਲੈ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥
naanak vakhaanai bayntee jin sach palai ho-ay. ||2||
Nanak humbly seeks those who have Truth (God) dwelling in their heart.
ਨਾਨਕ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੂਹਰੇ ਅਰਜ਼ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ- ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ l

ਦਾਨੁ ਮਹਿੰਡਾ ਤਲੀ ਖਾਕੁ ਜੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲਾਈਐ ॥
daan mahindaa talee khaak jay milai ta mastak laa-ee-ai.
The gift I seek is the humility; if I were to obtain it, I would consider myself very fortunate.
ਮੇਰੀ ਦਾਤ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ ਹੈ। ਜੇਕਰ ਇਹ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਵੇ, ਤਦ ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਨੂੰ ਲਾਵਾਂਗਾ।
ਕੂੜਾ ਲਾਲਚੁ ਛਡੀਐ ਹੋਇ ਇਕ ਮਨਿ ਅਲਖੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥
koorhaa laalach chhadee-ai ho-ay ik man alakh Dhi-aa-ee-ai.
Renounce false greed, and meditate single-mindedly on the incomprehensible God.
ਝੂਠੇ ਲੋਭ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਗ ਦੇ ਅਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਚਿੱਤ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਅਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰ।
ਫਲੁ ਤੇਵੇਹੋ ਪਾਈਐ ਜੇਵੇਹੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਈਐ ॥
fal tayvayho paa-ee-ai jayvayhee kaar kamaa-ee-ai.
As are the actions we commit, so are the rewards we receive.
ਜੇਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਕਰਮ ਅਸੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ, ਓਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਹੀ ਫਲ ਅਸੀਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ।
ਜੇ ਹੋਵੈ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਤਾ ਧੂੜਿ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਦੀ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
jay hovai poorab likhi-aa taa Dhoorh tinHaa dee paa-ee-ai.
If it is so preordained, then one gets to humbly serve the Saints.
ਪਰ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਕ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ ਜੇ ਧੁਰ ਤੋਂ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਵੇ (ਚੰਗੇ ਭਾਗ ਹੋਣ)।
ਮਤਿ ਥੋੜੀ ਸੇਵ ਗਵਾਈਐ ॥੧੦॥
mat thorhee sayv gavaa-ee-ai. ||10||
Because of our limited intellect, we forfeit the merits of selfless service.
ਜੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਥੋੜੀ ਮਤ ਦੀ ਟੇਕ ਰੱਖੀਏ ਤਾਂ (ਇਸ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ) ਕੀਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਘਾਲ-ਕਮਾਈ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ

Salok, First Guru:
ਸਚਿ ਕਾਲੁ ਕੂੜੁ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਕਲਿ ਕਾਲਖ ਬੇਤਾਲ ॥
sach kaal koorh varti-aa kal kaalakh baytaal.
Righteous living has become rare, falsehood is permeating everywhere and people are behaving like demons because of the sins and evils of Kalyug.
ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਸੱਚ ਉਡ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਕੂੜ ਹੀ ਕੂੜ ਪਰਧਾਨ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਕਲਜੁਗ ਦੀ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਾਲਖ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਅਤੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੀਵ ਮਾਨੋ ਭੂਤਨੇ ਬਣ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ l
ਬੀਉ ਬੀਜਿ ਪਤਿ ਲੈ ਗਏ ਅਬ ਕਿਉ ਉਗਵੈ ਦਾਲਿ ॥
bee-o beej pat lai ga-ay ab ki-o ugvai daal.
They who lived righteously (planted the seed of righteousness in their mind) have departed with honor. Those whose mind is split in duality, how can the seed of righteousness sprout in their mind?
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਬੀਜ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਬੀਜਿਆ, ਉਹ ਇਸ ਜਗਤ ਤੋਂ ਸੋਭਾ ਖੱਟ ਕੇ ਗਏ। ਪਰ ਹੁਣ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਅੰਕੁਰ ਫੁਟਣੋਂ ਰਹਿ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਮਨ ਦਾਲ ਵਾਂਗ ਦੋ-ਫਾੜ ਹੋ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ, ਦੁਚਿੱਤਾ-ਪਨ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਜੁੜਦਾ।
ਜੇ ਇਕੁ ਹੋਇ ਤ ਉਗਵੈ ਰੁਤੀ ਹੂ ਰੁਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
jay ik ho-ay ta ugvai rutee hoo rut ho-ay.
The seed of love for God will sprout if the mind is not split in duality and there is proper atmosphere such as the cool and calm atmosphere of early morning.
ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਕੁਰ ਭੀ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਫੁਟਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੇ ਮਨ ਸਾਬਤ ਹੋਵੇ, ਜੇ ਪੂਰਨ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਰੱਬ ਵਲ ਲੱਗਾ ਰਹੇ ਅਤੇ ਸਮਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਵੇਲਾ ਭੀ ਖੁੰਝਾਇਆ ਨਾ ਜਾਏ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਹੈ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਕੋਰੈ ਰੰਗੁ ਨ ਸੋਇ ॥
naanak paahai baahraa korai rang na so-ay
O’ Nanak, just as without a pre-treatment, a raw cloth doesn’t get beautifully dyed.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੇ ਲਾਗ ਨ ਵਰਤੀ ਜਾਏ ਤਾਂ ਕੋਰੇ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ (ਸੋਹਣਾ ਪੱਕਾ) ਰੰਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ l
ਭੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਖੁੰਬਿ ਚੜਾਈਐ ਸਰਮੁ ਪਾਹੁ ਤਨਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
bhai vich khumb charhaa-ee-ai saram paahu tan ho-ay
Similarly, to imbue the mind in the love of God, the pre-treatment (for the mind is) developing fear of God by hard work.
ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਜੇ ਇਸ ਕੋਰੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਰੰਗ ਦੇਣਾ ਹੋਵੇ, ਤਾਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਰੂਪ ਖੁੰਬ ਤੇ ਧਰੀਏ; ਫੇਰ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਤੇ ਉੱਦਮ ਦੀ ਪਾਹ ਦੇਈਏ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਤੀ ਜੇ ਰਪੈ ਕੂੜੈ ਸੋਇ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥੧॥
naanak bhagtee jay rapai koorhai so-ay na ko-ay. ||1||
O’ Nanak, when in this way the mind is imbued with God’s love and devotion, then no thought of falsehood arises in it.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਰੱਬ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਜਾਏ, ਤਾਂ ਮਾਇਆ-ਛਲ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਛੁਹ ਸਕਦਾ l

ਲਬੁ ਪਾਪੁ ਦੁਇ ਰਾਜਾ ਮਹਤਾ ਕੂੜੁ ਹੋਆ ਸਿਕਦਾਰੁ ॥
lab paap du-ay raajaa mahtaa koorh ho-aa sikdaar.
(The conditions in the world are miserable, it seems as if) both greed and sin have become the king and his helper; and falsehood is the chief executive.
ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਮਾਨੋ ਰਾਜਾ ਹੈ, ਪਾਪ ਵਜ਼ੀਰ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਝੂਠ ਚੌਧਰੀ ਹੈ,
ਕਾਮੁ ਨੇਬੁ ਸਦਿ ਪੁਛੀਐ ਬਹਿ ਬਹਿ ਕਰੇ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
kaam nayb sad puchhee-ai bahi bahi karay beechaar.
Lust is like their chief advisor, they ask for his advice and then sitting together they deliberate over different ways to befool the public.
ਭੋਗ-ਬਿਲਾਸ ਦੇ ਛੋਟੇ ਹਾਕਮ ਨੂੰ ਬੁਲਾ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਲਾਹ ਲਈ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਸਾਰੇ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਦਾਉ ਪੇਚ ਸੋਚਦੇ ਹਨ।
